Metagame NFE Metagame

I was meant to post a long team dump post with the teams I used but after playing 4 weeks of NFE Ubers I have come up with my big braincell conclusion that Baton Pass has become very restrictive in terms of team-building. The tier already is filled with big threats such as Gurdurr, Porygon2, Piloswine and literally every other banned Pokemon and is already difficult to build in. Baton Pass just added an unnecessary layer where you now need to carry at least 4 Pokemons that can block a set up or you can just use Baton Pass as well but that itself doesn't really solve anything and just adds layers of toxicity to an already bad metagame.

I'm going to start with showing how I have tried to play against Baton Pass with my first team,

~190883190884190881190885190886190887~
This team basically was created to counter Dom's Baton Pass team whilst being good enough to be used against regular teams. It is the only counter BP team I have found successful against other playstyles than just BP and my point here will basically be that you will struggle against BP if you don't at least have 4 of these Pokemon. If I were to create a Uber Viability rankings I would have Gurdurr on top of the list followed by Piloswine and Gligar because these three Pokemon literally stop so many things. The three of them have so much control over different playstyles and can literally fit onto any team. Mareanie is my main phazer, it is a really good wall for opposing Combuskens, Gurdurr and Vigoroth. Piloswine is my main threat to BP users; the main Baton Passers are Combusken, Gligar, Scyther and Togetic which Piloswine has no problem dealing with. The main problem with those is that Piloswine, while being one of the best wallbreakers, is very passive and can only switch in so many times and Baton Pass overall is a great lure to weaken it. Scyther much like Piloswine supports my team by taking care of Baton Pass supports who can set up their screens. Scyther also helps me early game by functioning as a lead and setting up on whatever comes first to then just break the synergy of Baton Pass (it worked 2/5th of time I tried so I'm not sure how reliable it is). Magneton is my only way of speed control and allows me to outspeed a nice variety of Pokemon at +2. Gurdurr is my main check to every Pokemon that Gligar can't handle as well as functioning as my wall breaker. Any Uber team without a Gurdurr is just not complete. Gligar is just my main control to everything and my 4th Pokemon that tries to stop Baton Passers with taunt. Oh and this team also gets 6-0'd by Porygon2 but technically it's a roll on Mareanie when full health.

I tried to make this as brief as possible as it isn't really a team dump but the link is on the icons if you feel like using the team. I will show some replays of the team performing tho I wish I had more diversity in my replays since all I was doing was battling my teams against my other teams because my teammates are lazy.
1. https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7anythinggoes-948940369
My team originally had Taunt+BU Vigoroth instead of Gurdurr because it was never supposed to be used and was really just to see if Dom's BP team was as broken as we thought. Besides my poor battling skills I believe it is very obvious that Baton Pass could not break this team as it is a pure counter team.

2. https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7anythinggoes-949062306
I think this game just shows the full potential of this team against Baton Pass, just wanted to throw it in so that you could see clearly how every Pokemon on that team can deal with Baton Pass.

3. https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7anythinggoes-961249272
Now this is how my counter BP team performing against my other counter BP team, I think this is a super boring game and I just wanted to show that p2 is broken. The main point to takeaway from this replay is that while my team is based on countering BP and can be used against regular BO teams it will struggle against a team that can also deal with BP and the main reason to that is because Piloswine and Gligar both cannot function without Gurdurr cleaning for them.

4.https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7anythinggoes-949065970
This is against a BO team I had made a little before NFEPL, it has nothing for BP and just is plain regular Ubers, a little bit of luck was on Cheryl's side and they also used P2 so they were cheating but while this replay doesn't show much it just shows that this team struggles against wall breakers because it is meant to only beat Baton Pass.

~190893190894190892190895190896190897~
This team was built by Dom and it probably is my favorite Baton Pass team I have seen so far. The way this team works is pretty straightforward, Clefairy functions as a lead setting up your hazards where it then is meant to make a clear path for Voltorb to come and set the screens up, this can be done through Encore or Wish. Voltorb coming in will then set up Reflect and Light Screen and later on explode, thus allowing Gligar or Combusken to enter the field and set up under screen protection to then Baton Pass onto Gurdurr or Vigoroth. Gligar can also provide taunt which blocks Mareanie, Golbat and opposing Gligar. Gurdurr uses four attacks, it has no need of set up however you can actually use taunt instead of Poison Jab in case you're scared that you won't be able to set up high enough to kill the entire meta which you will because Gurdurr does that at +3. Vigoroth on the other hand acts as a Taunt user in case you're facing Baton Pass and something is setting up in front of Combusken.

1. https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7anythinggoes-956566526
This replay was made in NFEPL and pretty much showcases the way Baton Pass acts against unprepared teams. Using Offense in NFE Ubers doesn't work as well as it used to because it is too easy for Baton Pass teams to set up on them using screens.

2. https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7anythinggoes-953859290
Here the opposing team was prepared to face BP. It had a Taunt/Defog Gligar, a Servine, a Haze Mareanie and a BU Gurdurr all of these are typical Uber mons that can usually deal with Baton Pass, yet it still lost because the Gligar got Taunted before it could've done anything else and that declared game.

3. https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7anythinggoes-955258845
I'm trying to use the most entertaining and interesting replays I have but I think this replay is actually pretty decent because it shows that Baton Pass really is about who can use taunt the fastest. It really is pushing the metagame where taunt is a needed move and putting it on every Pokemon will actually benefit you because that move is literally the key to beating anything in Ubers.

I think overall what I can conclude from all of these replays and the time I spent trying to find anti-bp cores is that Baton Pass is just too much. While it does add some diversity in the metagame it literally just ruins it. The main problem is that the Baton Pass matchup is good against everything while what counters it is harder to use against other playstyles. You are very restricted when building against BP as you need to run a specific type of core to be able to beat it and that just makes the tier even worse than it was to begin with. Baton Pass has made Uber a tier where your matchup won't be the defining factor, even when using a full team of phazers. Not to mention that Baton Pass is actually a brainless playstyle and really isn't hard to use. The move is just very uncompetitive and I don't see a reason why we shouldn't ban it, it really worsens Ubers.

Announcements
Machoke has been banned from ORAS NFE and cannot be used for any ORAS NFE games from this point on, including this week.
Baton Pass has been banned from NFE Ubers and cannot be used for any NFE Ubers games from this point on, including this week.
Eevium Z has been unbanned from NFE Ubers and can be used for any NFE Ubers games from this point on, including this week.

To expand and provide my own opinion on Ubers, I personally do not believe BP is broken or uncompetitive in Ubers. However, the community outcry against BP was strong enough to convince me to ban it. Under normal circumstances and for NFE tiers like SM and ORAS, there is a full and thorough suspect process for banning/unbanning Pokemon, Moves, Abilities and Items. However, NFE Ubers is a tier that receives zero metagame development and has no council, mostly because it has no room for development and because old gens NFE are seen as a much higher priority. It is likely that NFE Ubers will never see tournament play again after this PL, which is why I weighed community outcry so highly. This situation is unique to NFE Ubers and does not at all mimic or reflect our suspect policies and framework for SM, ORAS and any future old gens or NFE-based tiers we develop, which are much fairer and heavily based and judged using Smogon Tiering Policy.
With that said, I do take full responsibility and apologise for how NFE Ubers was dealt with this NFEPL. If you have any questions about this or wish to criticise how NFE Ubers was handled, feel free to PM me.

Nominating:

Clefairy: S -> A+

Despite of being a great Calm Mind user and probably one of the best Stealth Rock setters, Clef is losing it's power when played in a meta where Servine and Rose are S tier and with Machoke rising up, which can beat Clef with Knock Off + Heavy Slam.

Combusken B+ -> A
So great offensive threat, not only with it's wallbreaking potential, Combusken is a great setup sweeper with Speed Boost + Sword Dance which creeps all the S tier mons. The Busk counters in the most of cases lacks of reliable recovery, so they can be chiped away easily. Running Thunder Punch makes Busk able to hit almost every bulky water types and specifically Mareanie, which is it's better counter.

Krokorok B+ -> A
With a solid typing with Dark giving STAB Knock Off and Pursuit and with Ground giving Electric immunity to prevent Volt Switch pivot and the ability to set up Stealth Rock, Krok can easily be a threat not only offensively but defensively too.
One one the best Choice Scarf users, can be used to Pursuit trap Kadabra, Haunter and having the possibility to trap Electabuzz if it's locked in. This set also has the potential to late game sweep with the Moxie ability and it's nice Speed status.
Specially Defensive Krok with Eviolite is a solid counter to a lot of well ranked mons, with the capacity to Pursuit, Knock Off, set up Stealth Rocks and creep mons with Earthquake. Krok is able to counter Haunter, Kadabra, Electabuzz and even Pawniard and Grimer - Alola thanks to it's Intimidate abilty.

Marshtomp B -> A-
Access to Stealth Rock setter and good typing makes Marshtomp a very solid pick. The ability to counter Fire and Electric types makes Marshtomp win it's space. Solid against Monferno, Combusken and Electabuzz, providing a good defensive pick but being such a passive mon, the lack of reliable recovery and the presence of Servine and Roselia makes it hard for Marshtomp which can lose all momentum but all in all is a solid mon.

Prinplup A- -> B+
Access to Stealth Rock and Defog and with it's ability to switch into Fire moves, Prinplup can be a solid pick when building. Marshtomp and Wartortle can outclass Prinplup is some ways, Marshtomp is a better rocker, has more bulk and the ability to check Electric moves, on the other hand, Wartotle bulk is greater and it provides spin support.
Of course Prinplup can run both Defog and Rocks but when the momentum is on Prinplup's side, only one move have to be chosen because Roselia and Servine are free against it.

Wartortle B -> B+
Great bulk, being able to check Monferno and Combusken and spin support are the best characteristics of Wartortle. Unfortunately Tortle lacks of recovery and it's movepool is really poor, making it walled by Servine and Roselia which can Defog/Spike in front of it.

In today's post I am going to address two different topics. First of all, I would like to discuss Machoke viability in SM NFE as we have seen an increase in its ranking during the last shifts and it has demonstrated a great splashability during this NFEPL that is on-going. The second topic is to give my opinion about some nominations in ORAS NFE that were done by Crystalites some time ago. Keeping this short, let's go to the bread:

Machoke

Spr 1b 067.png

We all know that we have two Pokémon that can build a great core and they are S rank worthy: RoServ. These two have been in the spotlight for a while and we currently have a suspect for Servine. With this in mind, some have discussed and nominate to decrease the rank of Clefairy (right now shares an S spot with RoServ) and others have discussed Machoke viability to be as high as RoServ (currently in A spot). Moreover, Machoke has been recently banned from ORAS NFE due to its massive pressure in teambuilding. This, although in a different generation, can shed some light in today's discussion.

In order to discuss which is the best spot to for Machoke we need to build the arguments for the different items: 1) Roles it possesses, 2) Defensive counterplay, 3) Offensive Counterplay, 4) Teambuilding Pressure and Flexibility.

1) Roles it possesses

Machoke can serve basically as a strong wallbreaker just spamming KOff and Close Combat. With KOff prepares the field for other sweepers/cleaners of the team (i.e. Servine) or for him when it will come back in the following turns to click Close Combat with ease. It can also work as a tank with some bulk and Eviolite. Moreover, due to Dark resistance it does not care to receive KOff attacks and losing Eviolite as far as it can click then CC/KOff.

Having access to priority with Bullet Punch is really good but there are other moves that give it a greater wallbreaking power: Heavy Slam and Earthquake. Heavy Slam allows it to hit very hard Clefairy after Eviolite being Knocked off and it can also hit other Pokémon like Koffing (I have been trying this Pokémon to counterplay Machoke with some success but less than I expected due to Heavy Slam and lack of realiable recovery). Earthquake helps against AGrimer, Metang and Fire Pokémon.

Overall, it helps a lot to the team but also after spamming KOff it can start to wallbreak very easily and getting some kills and opening a hole in the chest of the opponent's team.

2) Defensive counterplay

So, which are the main checks/counters of Machoke with not a small niche in the viability rankings? For the calcs I will be using the most common sets of each Pokémon. Moreover, I will not take into account if Guts are activated (something really important and which Machoke can take some advantage of).

Servine can take a KOff from Choke with ease (30ish%) but then it takes like 75-80% of one CC doing only a 30% in the first LStorm.
252+ Atk Machoke Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 184 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Servine: 82-97 (26.7 - 31.5%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
252+ Atk Machoke Close Combat vs. 184 HP / 0 Def Servine: 228-268 (74.2 - 87.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Roselia lives one KOff but then it is highly pressured with following KOffs or EQs. The main problem is that it only does 33% at maximum with SBomb and it can risk to get a Poison in Machoke (activating Guts).
252+ Atk Machoke Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Roselia: 121-143 (39.8 - 47%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252+ Atk Machoke Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Roselia: 187-220 (61.5 - 72.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Physical defense Clefairy seems a good Pokémon to stop Machoke but it is not. KOff does practically nothing (10%ish) but it opens a door to spam Heavy Slam doing 85%ish and getting a kill to Clefairy easily. Moreover, Moonblast can only do like 45%ish to Machoke.
252+ Atk Machoke Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Clefairy: 36-42 (10.4 - 12.2%) -- possible 9HKO
252+ Atk Machoke Heavy Slam (120 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Clefairy: 264-312 (76.7 - 90.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

In the A+ rank defensive all Pokémon get burnt by Machoke defensively: Kadabra is 2HKO (with Focus Sash), Haunter same process with KOff spamming, KOff + EQ for AGrimer, Monferno and Electabuzz, KOff + CC against Frogadier.

In the A rank, Sliggoo is easily killed by KOff and CC, Mareanie can live a 3HKO but it is highly pressured by KOff + EQ, and finally one of the best counterplays is Machoke and the final outcome is a KOff war (the first to get Eviolite knocked-off is the one that will lose).

In the A- rank, Duosion is 2HKO by KOff but it can hit a ton to Choke with Psyshock. Misdreavus is 2HKO again by KOff, Metang is 2HKO by KOff + EQ, Pawniard cannot swith in front of it and Prinplup is 3HKOed but it has no way to recover HP and to revenge kill it (Scald does like 20ish%).

To move on faster, below B ranks I will only focus on the Pokémon that can really stop Machoke at least with 3HKO or more (I will highlight in green good counters to Machoke).

Quilladin: B+ Pokémon that in many aspects is inferior to Roselia but it can stop Machoke and it can set up Spikes or deal some damage with Wood Hammer.

Staravia: B+ Pokémon with great utility using Defog or U-Turn. WIth Brave Bird it can also put some pressure to Machoke.

Gabite: B Pokémon that can live KOff + CC and still do some damage with EQ to Machoke or it can set up rocks. However, it has no reliable recovery.

Gloom: B Pokémon far inferior to Roselia but it can stop absolutely Machoke using Strength Sap. Without Eviolite it takes at maximum 40ish% on Heavy Slam.

Marshtomp: B Pokémon 3HKOed but with no reliable recovery. However, it can set up rocks and with Yawn force Machoke to switch out.

Tangela: B Pokémon that is 3HKOed by KOff + CC and it has good ways to recover HP (Synthesis + Regenerator + Giga Drain + Leech Seed). However, it can only do small damage to Machoke with Giga Drain.

Wartortle: Again B Pokémon 3HKOed by the combination of KOff + CC and with no reliable recovery. Counter is a good tech to get Choke get choked (jeje it is a choke/joke omg!).

Some mentions in C rank would be Whirlipede and Mudbray with small niches both of them. Koffing as an unranked Pokémon can tank some hits with Pain Split and do some damage with Sludge Bomb and using Z-Haze to recover some HP rapidly.

However, Machoke what will do is just spam KOff to the switch-in and then get out of the field coming back after some turns and then with CC claiming a 2HKO in many of the above Pokémon that are checks/counters.

To sum up, in my honest opinion, the best counters are Quilladin, Gloom and Tangela but this Pokémon are totally overwhelmed by other Pokémon and they have inferior capabilities compared with Roselia in other aspects. So you will not normally use them during the teambuilding.

3) Offensive counterplay

Machoke with Eviolite has a great bulk but no speed. This helps a lot to be offensively pressured by +2/4 SpAt Servine, +2SpAt Clefairy and Kadabra. Other Pokémon that can do a 2HKO if played well are Frogadier, Haunter and Electabuzz (Psychic access). Metang (Evio and CB) with Zen Headbutt is great against Machoke (at least when Choke is switching in).

Staravia, Rufflet and Trumbeak are flying Pokémon that being scarfed or bulky sets can impede Machoke to wallbreak as it pleases.

4) Teambuilding Pressure and Flexibility

I consider Machoke as one of the best wallbreakers on the tier. Moreover, there are only 3 fighting Pokémon that are "great" in viability terms in the tier: Machoke, Monferno and Combusken. Combusken is really awesome with Speed Boost abilitya and access to SD but its bulk is mediocre and movepool is not wide (TPunch helps a bit against Mareanie but against Marshtomp has big issues). Monferno gives utility and flexibility due to the fact it can be both special or physical attacker (NPloter and SDancer with priority for special attacker) but it can also give utility using U-Turn and setting rocks. However, to be a speed controler needs to run Choice Scarf and it lacks enough wallbreaking power.

However, Machoke gives you enough bulky, wallbreaking power without boosting itself, Knock Off that is awesome in the tier, priority if needed and a wide movepool. Overall, Machoke gives you many reasons of why using it and not other fighting Pokémon or wallbreakers. In addition, you need to be aware of Machoke during teambuilding. Due to the lack of defensive counters/checks and the fact that the best way to deal with it is to play offensively, in my opinion, the best way to teambuild right now is to focus on BO or more specifically Offensive pathways.

To sum up, Machoke is a great Pokémon with some bulk, wallbreaking power and wide movepool. It has a small group of Pokémon able to counter/check being the best way to deal with it the offensive outplay. This provokes a great teambuilding pressure.

I would call a suspect after Servine output. I am not pretty sure about ban/unban but I think it deserves to have some thoughts about it but I would wait until the tier stabilize when Servine's results come out.

Crystalites nomations in ORAS NFE

After Machoke's departure in ORAS NFE I would like to reasses Crystal's nominations:

Dusclops A- to B+: Completely agree. Duclops was at some extent good against Machoke due to CC stopping. I don't think that in a tier in which KOff is really good a ghost passive Pokémon has a good niche in A spot.

Sliggoo A- to B+: Again, agreed. Sliggoo is really good but right now one of the best Pokémon in the tier is Clefairy and this can stop Sliggoo if played well.

Fraxure B to B+: This is the counterpart of Sliggoo drop. Great coverage and and access too DD and SD. I think B+ right now is totally deserved.

Marshtomp B to B+: In the same way as in SM NFE, Tomp needs a jump stopping Volt-Switchers of clicking this without thinking or mind-gamings and giving rocks and some phazing.

Tangela B- to B: Due to Machoke ban I don't think an increase is needed otherwise some others physical attackers increase in usage like Gabite or Metang. So I don't agree at all.

Vibrava C+ to B-: Agreed. I think Vibrava gives a lot of utilit in the tier without both Machoke and Servine as, at some extent, threats to Vibrava (Choke could Knock it off and Servien could LStorm it).

Shelgon C+ to C-: I don't agree with it. It can run both DD and stalling sets. Ofc, the latter is the best for Shelgon in the tier but, beyond being able to Wish pass, it can phaze both Monferno and Combusken with Roar, something that only Marshtomp can do (and this cannot Wish pass).

Honedge C to UR: I can see the point. In that case I cannot say a lot about it but I could see it in C due to access to SD and Pursuit + being a rapid spin blocker and access to priority.

Cheff Gordo

I completely agree with his nominations although I would recommend Combusken to be A- or, at maximum, A because I find it not as splashable as Monferno.

Crystalites nomations in ORAS NFE

Firstly, if you actually read my longer post (in fairness this was easy to miss) with my teamdump, I do mention Tangela doesn't need a rise any more (around midway in the post) because Machoke got banned so I agree with your point here.

Secondly Shelgon is completely outclassed by Fraxure as a DD sweeper. Lickitung is a much better and reliable cleric as thanks to its higher HP stat. There are also better phazers, such as Quilladin, Gabite and Hippopotas. This puts Shelgon in a grey area where it isn't really the best at anything, and can do a few things ok. To me this fits more in line with Pokemon of the C- tier, such as Staryu and Natu who perform their niches even better than Shelgon, to be honest, but are very small niches. Also Shelgon doesn't fit well in the current meta of ORAS NFE, which is why it is less viable than during the playtesting phase.

Thirdly, Honedge is a Pokemon that admittedly I have not used yet, but has seen 0 usage this tour and in any playtests we've done up until this point. Being a spinblocker is way more niche than you think, in a tier where the number of spinners are very limited in the first place and the ones we have are mediocre at best. As a trapper, it is outclassed by Munchlax, who also is able to set up sweep btw, as Munchlax is far bulkier and reliably checks Kadabra, whilst Honedge has to be wary about Shadow Ball. Pawniard outclasses it as a steel SD setup sweeper
-------------
A Pokemon I forgot to put on the VR slate for ORAS was Staravia, which has been doing extremely well this tour. We've seen bulky, scarf and even banded sets see success showing off its versatility and how it can be geared to surprised opponents and beat the biggest threats; Clefairy gets bopped by band, Monferno is walled by PhysDef etc. It still does struggle with dealing against special threats but it's ones of the better physical checks which doesn't suffer from being too passive. Also Machoke being banned helps it a lot as it was always just a soft check or had to run weird tech like Feather Dance. It's now much more reliable as a physical check, as there is now one less threat which would commonly Knock Off its Eviolite. Overall I'd like to nom it from B+ to A-

Teams:

Below are some BW NFE teams. These teams are not sample teams; the BW NFE metagame is too new and undeveloped to make accurate sample teams. These teams should give a basic idea of some of the playstyles that are viable in the metagame and provide a means of learning the metagame. In the future, these teams will be replaced by good quality sample teams or updated and given descriptions.

Feel free to submit sample teams if you wish, but in order to maintain a good quality archive, your team will be subject to approval before its addition. You may use any team below in any way you see fit.

Team Submission Guidelines:

  • An Importable of the team is required.
  • A brief explanation of how the team works and what each member does. You may also include any success the team had in tournament play, and if you want, some replays.
  • A submitted team will be added if deemed up to par.
Now here are the teams!

Gonna break this one liner streak with some thoughts on the meta.

NFEPL has really showcased a lot of the SM meta and vividly enough has changed my opinions through a lot of topics as it's gone forward, most especially Servine, which now honestly should at least be suspected, but the thread has beaten that horse to a mere pulp so I'm not gonna touch on it too much. The metagame itself seems to really favor dark types rn, with mons like Pawniard, Vullaby, Grimer-Alola and the more uncommon Krokorok being seen to be fitting onto teams easier and more frequently, as they do really well here packing STAB Knock Off with just being in general good offensive mons. Meta is going in a good direction tbh, no arguing it.

Some VR Noms I'd personally like to see (even though Cheryl went down the entire VR, absolute madwoman)

Duosion to B+: Duosion can be a really powerful threat that once set up is a wincon for sure, but keywords being "when set up" make the difference. The rising popularity of dark types make this think darn near impossible to get in, much less long enough to actually become hard to break due to boosters like Servine that can over time rip through it, or mons like Pawniard that just turn it into setup fodder for their sweeps. Really hard mon to make worth any effect right now, in my opinion should drop.

Machoke to A+/S:
Pivoting around this thing's perfect coverage for the entire meta is honestly the most obnoxious thing ever, and it's bulk let's it suck hits from powerful attackers only for it to hit back and most likely net a KO. This thing is absolutely terrifying for the tier and the VR should better reflect this.

Marshtomp to A:
Even with grass types running around the tier, Marshtomp still threatens a lot of the place with it's great STAB coverage and amazing bulk. This thing over NFEPL has proven to be one of the tier's best stealth rockers while pushing out a ton of setup users like Pawniard, Monferno, and Combusken. Definitely should be way higher than it's current placement at B for sure.

I have seen a lot of good VR post lately which inspired me to lob in a couple of noms too. Edit: This was supposed to be a short post, but as I finished A rank I realised damn this will be a long one. The Pokemon I dont comment on should stay where they are. I haven't focused too much on C+ and below so keep this in mind.

Clefairy S to A
In this meta I think Clefairy is too passive and it doesn't really check any top tier threats despite being a defensive Pokemon. Marshtomp is a way better rocker because it keeps common threats like Monferno, Pawniard and Klang in check and Servine can do everything better as a bulky special setup mon. Clef is just outclassed.

Machoke A to A+
I have seen a lot of people that want Machoke to be S rank. I dont think its on the same level as Servine and Roselia. The meta is very offensive and Machokes lack of healing and speed just doesn't make it S rank Imo. Nothing comes in for free on Machoke because of its unresisted movepool, but I think the rise of birds, hazardstack and an offensive teams like special spam keeps it in check.

Mareanie A to A-
I used to be a big fan of this Pokemon because its really good against Monferno, but lately my mind has changed a bit. Monferno can be checked by other great Pokemon that works better in this offensive meta. Mons like Marshtomp, defensive Staravia, Haunter and Kadabra is just better right now. Mareanie is also solid against Clefairy and Frogadier, but again, you can use other Pokemon that fits the meta better like Servine or Roselia.

Sliggoo A to B-
I have never really used this mon, but from what I've seen it doesn't seem too good. The curse set have a very hard time setting up and looks like its easy to take advantage of and the special set lacks power, healing, speed and is a bad Servine check.

Duosion A- to B
The meta is not kind to this Pokemon. Dark types, ghost types and strong setup Pokemon is on nearly every team which makes it impossible for Duosion to put in work. This Pokemon does have base 125 special attack plus being pretty bulky tho so its not useless.

Pawniard A- to A
I nommed Pawniard from B+ to A- back in April and this Pokemon feels even better now than it did back then. Good matchup against almost every mon in A+(and Rose) and Pawniard doesn't mind the pretty high usage of birds right now.

Prinplup A- to B-
Pure defensive water type in this meta that doesn't hit very hard is just not good enough sadly.

Dusclops B+ to C+
I feel like I am repeating myself on some of these Pokemon, but Dusclops is also just too passive. I like it on sun teams and Trick Room teams, but that doesn't make it higher than C+ Imo.

Ferroseed B+ to B-
This mon have a really cool movepool and good bulk, but its just too passive to be ranked any higher.

Klang B+ to A-
I love Klang. Very consistent setup mon that can win games on its own. The spdef set tanks almost everything on the special side and the offensive set with Electrium Z hits surprisingly hard.

Munchlax B+ to B
Another mon that doesn't like the offensive meta and have a hard time setting up. Body Slam, pursuit trapping and its high special defense is pretty cool tho.

Staravia B+ to A-
This mon is really cool. You can run defensive Staravia to keep Monferno, Machoke and Servine in check. Choice Scarf is also very good for pivoting, pursuit trapping and hitting hard with Reckless plus Double Edge or Brave Bird. A lot of offensive team doesn't have space for normal/flying resist which let this mon have a ton of fun.

Gabite B to A-
You can use Gabite as a bulky rocker that outspeeds Monferno and you can never go wrong with Choice Scarf or Choice band because of its nice dual STAB. Electabuzz and Magmar has started using HP Grass over HP Ice lately because of the Marshomp usage and this makes Gabite even better.

Gloom B to C
I wasn't around when this mon was more used than Roselia, but this Pokemon is just outclassed at the moment.

Hakamo-o B to B+
Another solid Dragon type. I really like the Fighting STAB and all around good coverage too. Roselia can't even touch it. Im ranking this at the same rank as Fraxure because I think both mons are equally scary when setting up and they have different niches.

Magmar B to A-
Magmar is so cool atm because it really likes the meta. Pure water types and Sliggoo is not in a good spot right now which means that Magmar have limited switchins. 2 grass types being in S tier doesn't hurt Magmar either. The Belly Drum set is not good btw, its the special set that makes it A- worthy.

Marshtomp B to A-
Marshtomp is such a good Pokemon. Beating Monferno, Pawniard, Klang, electric immunity, ground STAB and being an all around bulky Pokemon is just so good. No healing sucks tho.

Wartortle B to B-
This mon is on the same level as Prinplup Imo. Both gets forced out by Servine and Roselia. Prinplup can get up rocks before it switches out, but Wartortle can potentially get a surprise kill with Mirror Coat.

Eevee B- to C
I honestly dont really have an opinion on this mon. I have never seen it successfully pulling the Z move off and I think there is just a lot of better setup mons than this one.

Rufflet B- to B
Rufflet usually runs Choice Scarf or Choice band and it doesn't really have any reliable switchins. Metang is probably the best one but Rufflet can always pivot out with U-turn. I have also seen a bulkier set that runs Substitute + Bulk Up. That set is deadly against unprepared teams.

Hippopotas C+ to B-
Very bulky rocker with healing plus being one of the few mons that isn't 2hkoed by Machoke. Hippopotas also gives your team electric immunity which is always nice.

Lampent C+ to B
This Pokemon is pretty underrated. Fire/Ghost typing means that it checks Monferno, Roselia, Magmar and Servine(kinda) plus having a very good dual STAB offensively. Its pretty slow, but if you run Timid it can actually outspeed bulky Servine and a lot of other threats. I think we might see more of this mon in the future.

Vibrava C to B-
Solid defogger that can either run physdef to deal with Monferno or spdef to deal with Roselia, Magmar and Electabuzz. I used to love the physdef set but have really been liking the spdef one more lately. Really helps against some of the meta trends.

Vullaby C to B
Vullaby is so fat and have dark type which is so good atm. The spdef set tanks hits from top tier mons and it can also defog, Knock off items and has Flying STAB.

I think Misdreavus and Frogadier is potential A ranks, but I decided to not touch on them. I might have been a bit hard on some of the Pokemon, but I think these ranks looks about right.

I definitively agree with Quag only with one exception.. I don't know about Klang being A- in a meta with Gabite, Machoke, Marshtomp and Fire types rising up it's usage and even with Hakamo-o gaining it's space. All in all, Klang is solid but i think A tier is too high for it, of course it can do some damage and be used to counter Roselia and Servine, but lacking of reliable recovery forces Klang to run RestTalk which makes it predictable and easy to play around.

Thanks for reading my post and I'm happy that u agree with most of my noms. I might be the biggest Klang fan in nfe so maybe nomming it from B+ to A- is a bit too much, but I will tell you why I think Klang is good. First off u said that mons like Marshtomp, Gabite, Machoke, fire types and Hakamo-o is used a lot which puts Klang in a bad spot. This is very true, Marshtomp and Gabite can get up pretty free rocks, the other mons u listed can switch in and gain momentum, but risks taking too much damage from Gear Grind. None of the mons u listed can heal tho which makes them pretty easy to chip down. Marshtomp, Gabite and Machoke will most likely be forced in at some point to take a Close Combat from Monferno or even a Knock Off from Alolan-Grimer. This is why Klang is so good late game. The second thing I wanna say is that Klang gives your team so much role compression. The steel typing lets it be a normal/flying resist, good against Roselia, Kadabra and is even immune to Haunters strongest attack. Klang also gives ur team a great wincon and a pretty good matchup against offense. Not sure if this is enough for A- tho, I'm just a big fan of this mon in general. Thanks again!

lovely... i can see when Klang can be annoying. Perfect for a late game sweep thanks to Shift Gear and it can set up all day in front of the Grass types due to it's natural bulk. I don't know about the z elec because klang already checks Flying types and with the decrease of the Water types this z seems to be unnecessary. Eviolite can be a pain to break through because it soaks hits from Gabite, Krok and even Choke. Maybe some Breakneck Blitz set?

Quag, thanks for clarifying it's potential in this actual meta.. Now i can see why you love Klang. I have no formed opinion right now

ALL MATCH REPLAYS SHOULD BE POSTED IN THE NFE DISCORD IN #replays-channel. PLEASE DO NOT POST REPLAYS HERE.

The document will be updated during the week with player records, standings, replays etc.

Announcements

Reminder that Machoke is banned in ORAS NFE, BP is banned in NFE Ubers and Eevium Z is freed in NFE Ubers.
Please schedule well. Message opponents early, get a clear exact scheduled time on a day and not an 8 hour range where someone may be free cheers. Please also post scheduled times in the match scheduling channel in Discord . I'm sure ppl want to watch these live.

Fill in this NFEPL 3 Feedback form too please if you took part in the tour. Takes 3 minutes, is anonymous and you can be as harsh or as critical as you want. Would really appreciate it
