Welcome to Smogon! Take a moment to read the Introduction to Smogon for a run-down on everything Smogon, and make sure you take some time to read the global rules.
Congratulations to Jarii and Aladyyn, who both tied with 6 votes each. Both of these cores made excellent use of supportive teammates helping a powerful sweeper to win the game. This week's theme is super spoopy in
, an extremely potent offensive combination that few foes can stomach all at once! The main threat, Hariyama, can usually get taken down by a Will-O-Wisp if it runs Thick Fat, or just a couple of strong Fire Blasts if it runs Guts. These types also provide a number of complementary resistances and immunities.
Submissions will continue until Saturday 7th May at 12:00 GMT. Here's some miscellaneous spooks.
This is a fun core based around Nasty Pard + SD Busken. Rotom is an awesome partner for both of them, checking stuff like Steelix, Malamar, Lanturn, Samurott, Poliwrath, and Mantine, that stand in their way. Pard + Busken bring some solid speed to the core, 2 wincons, and they also have great synergy with eachother. Rotom has a pretty interesting spread, with enough speed to get the jump on neutral natured base 90's and timid base 80s. The HP investment lets it avoid the 2HKO from Tauros's Zen Headbutt, and the 3HKO from Yama's Knock Off, while the Sptak investment nets the 3HKO on Pivot Lanturn and Defensive Mesprit with Hex, Overall, a pretty fun core.
-Spooky looking core, Ninetales is a good balance breaker and this core supports it well, skuntank is one of the best defogers and can remove hazards vs a lot of pokemon which makes ninetales job easier, gourgeist is pretty underrated wall, checks ground types for both skuntank and ninetales while being able to soften things with wisp, ninetales supports the other 2 by being a good rotom check which is annoying vs balanced teams while also being a good freeze dry resist. (tips: lanturn is great partner for core, pokemon like tauros that brings speed for team are very useful for cleaning late game)
Here's a pretty cool balanced core with sd wisp zard. Standard sets overall, Charizard makes a decent set up sweeper provided it has the right support. Wisp and roost give it plenty of chances to sd. Mixed shiftry gives us defog support as well as some more immediate power with Leaf storm and sucker punch. Shiftry also appreciates zard's ability to come in on things that don't mind switching into it like Vileplume and Weezing. Hex Wisp Mismagius is a solid way to handle most balance builds and it also gives the core another form of hazard prevention in taunt. Missy also tends to force out most rockers like Rhydon, Steelix and Regirock since they don't appreciate getting burned.
Pyroar and Skuntank pair up well with Rotom since it covers their Ground weakness and covers Pyroars Fighting weakness and deals with Water types. Rotom also benefits from the other two: Pyroar covers Rotoms Ghost weakness and Skuntank covers Rotoms Dark weakness. The point of this core is basically wearing off the opponent until Specs Pyroar cleans up. I chose to put Overheat since it can blast holes in the opponents team early on, Flamethrower/Hyper Voice to spam late game.
We stay on the memento playstyle with Belly Drum Charizard, Belly Drum Charizard is something you do not see everyday when you face a Charizard but with the right support it can be really effective. Liepard is there for a couple roles, a pivot to Charizard or Mismagius when needed with U-turn, so that set up sweepers think twice when they try to set up and if you predict right and they do set up you can Encore and then go in to Charizard and set up a Sub or a Belly Drum. Mismagius is the Memento user of this core, Memento Mismagius is something most people tend to forget about it which opens holes for Belly Drum Charizard. With fast Memento/Taunt/Will-O-Wisp is Mismagius the perfect fit for this core.
Cacturne @ Life Orb
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Mild Nature
- Dark Pulse
- Giga Drain
- Sucker Punch
- Destiny Bond / Spikes
Bolded means my personal preference.
This is a fun core meant for teams that aren't dead serious, but rather want to use some cool pokemons that happen to work well together. I think previous posters have already covered more serious approaches to this typing core, especially PursuitofHappiny and Shadowtags. As I don't think "standard" can be done much better than these two cores with the limited amount of mons we have, I wanted to shoot for something people don't expect. Never underestimate the power of not being predictable in pokemon!
The core has decent offensive synergy: Magmortar just breaks a lot of stuff in NU, and mixed Cacturne offers help beating stuff he doesn't like, like bulky waters and ground/rock pokemon. Drifblim handles Hariyama who otherwise would utterly destroy this core, and appreciates the fact that except for rock attacks, this core has a way of switching into most stuff that threatens it. The set is also highly underutilized at the moment, since it has the capability of breaking through offensive and defensive teams alike once it's checks and counters are weakened.
Power Herb Magmortar is a super cool pokemon, especially since you can fake the Assault Vest and bop incoming stuff. Solar Beam is a really fun attack to use on Mag - it guarantees the OHKO on Samurott without rocks up, it 2HKOs SpDef Lanturn with a combination of Solar Beam and quake and does around 75% to bulky stuff like Regirock. Life Orb+Focus Blast is most likely the objectively better choice - I just wanted to play around with something different and found this to work quite well. It's more of a lure set, but it's been doing work. As usual, Mag sports a lot of coverage, so adjust according to your teams needs. TBolt, FBlast are mandatory on this core, rest is optional and depending on your item and the rest of your team.
Mixed Cacturne has been one of my favourite sets in NU ever since I saw DeejDy use it in his TURNT team. Sucker Punch offers some much needed speed control, as this core is rather slow on it's own. Spikes can help weakening stuff for the Drif sweep, but I prefer destiny bond to handle stuff you otherwise would not be able to. Energy Ball can be used over Giga Drain, but I think the longevity of GD beats the minor damage boost of Energy Ball.
Drif is something I've toyed around with a lot lately, and I think this set is the most fun one to use. It burns stuff that wants to switch in, it sets up on burned things and threatens more stuff than you'd expect. Knock off bops annoying ghost switch ins, though DBond can be good depending on the rest of your team. EVs could probably be improved, but I like being fast and strong, so that's what I use.
Apologies for late response, I dieded. Thanks for the submissions, please vote for your two favorite cores. Voting will stop on Monday 9th May at 17:00 GMT. Remember to check each core's sets before voting as there's a lot of creative sets this time around. :)
This week's winners are Shadowtags and ~Eternally, with 7 votes and 5 votes respectively, and PursuitofHappiny coming very close in third place. These cores all provided strong offense, decent defensive capability, and good support options for their teammates in spreading Burns and using Taunt / Encore to stop opposing setup sweepers. With stats having dropped a few hours ago, I think the new metagame is going to really rock... this week's theme is
spam! Some of the most powerful Pokemon in the tier are Rock-types, and both Ground- and Fighting-type moves provide excellent neutral coverage, providing you pack something for Torterra and Claydol.
Submissions will continue until Saturday 14th May at 12:00 GMT. Please remember to include three Pokemon in your cores; the last one can be of any type you like and should complement the other two. Let's rock...
