Garbodor @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Aftermath
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Gunk Shot
- Thunderbolt
- Focus Blast / Psychic
- Toxic Spikes

Lure Garb is a sick partner for for Hariyama. Yama really takes advantage of Toxic Spikes with Fake Out, and conversely appreciates Garbodors ability to absorb T-spikes on your side of the field so it doesn't get withered. Garb also lures in and destroys Pelipper with Thunderbolt, clearing the way for Haryiama to spam CC. Psychic can be opted for over Focus Blast to catch opposing Garbodors, but generally Focus Blast's ability to nail Steel's like Steelix and Klinklang is more useful for a team.

252 SpA Garbodor Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Pelipper: 320-380 (99 - 117.6%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO

And with that, BrandonBeast scraped by with one extra vote to take the win home for the lovely Sweet Potatoes :P Congratulations!

With that, this week I decided to go with a popular mon that we know and love...

Samurott @ Lum Berry / Splash Plate

EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature

- Aqua Jet
- Megahorn
- Swords Dance

reserving steelix

steelix.gif

Steelix @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 244 HP / 180 Atk / 84 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Heavy Slam
- Earthquake
- Stealth Rock
- Toxic

Steelix works really well with Samurott. It helps deal with troublesome electric types, or at least providing an immunity, giving otter more chance to sweep. And can set rocks to bring pokemon into range of Samurott's attacks or to break sturdy etc. Having sturdy itself can also make it a semi switch in for most things, meaning it can bring pokes in range of samu's attacks by dealing damage after hanging on with sturdy.

magmortar.png

Magmortar @ Assault Vest
Ability: Vital Spirit
EVs: 104 HP / 252 SpA / 152 Spe
Modest Nature
- Fire Blast
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power Grass
- Flame Charge

Got standard AV Magmortar here. The idea is that Magmortar roasts every common answer to SD Rott. Be it Pelipper, Mantine, Vileplume, Gourgeist, Sceptile, or whatever else you are using, they all catch a Fire Blast/coverage move. I've got HP Grass over something like Focus Blast because having a Samurott means Magmortar can go without. HP Grass is there to beat the stray Quagsire that you may still see, while also dealing some damage to Lanturn. Didn't see the need to go full EQ as Lanturn use has declined dramatically, the damage between HP Grass and EQ is pretty comparable against the fish, and lastly because I have a Rott for opposing Magmortar. Flame Charge is there to get boosts off weakened mons in order to combat upper speed tier threats that want to prey on Samurott. A final note is that while Magmortar is a sure fire answer to Specs Sceptile, be wary of the LO EQ variants.

252+ SpA Magmortar Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Gourgeist-Super: 488-576 (130.4 - 154%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ SpA Magmortar Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 16+ SpD Mantine: 284-336 (85.2 - 100.9%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO

252+ SpA Magmortar Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 104 SpD Pelipper: 492-580 (152.3 - 179.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ SpA Magmortar Hidden Power Grass vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Quagsire: 396-468 (100.5 - 118.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ SpA Magmortar Hidden Power Grass vs. 0 HP / 52 SpD Lanturn: 166-196 (42.4 - 50.1%) -- 0.4% chance to 2HKO (Specs Lanturn)

252+ SpA Magmortar Fire Blast vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Vileplume: 416-492 (117.8 - 139.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ SpA Magmortar Fire Blast vs. 0 HP / 4- SpD Sceptile: 488-576 (173.6 - 204.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Choice Specs Sceptile Leaf Storm vs. 104 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Magmortar: 96-113 (30.2 - 35.6%) -- 31.1% chance to 3HKO

0 SpA Pelipper Scald vs. 104 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Magmortar: 104-126 (32.8 - 39.7%) -- 99.8% chance to 3HKO

0 SpA Mantine Scald vs. 104 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Magmortar: 102-120 (32.1 - 37.8%) -- 88.4% chance to 3HKO

252+ SpA Choice Specs Lanturn Volt Switch vs. 104 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Magmortar: 93-109 (29.3 - 34.3%) -- 4.4% chance to 3HKO

0 SpA Vileplume Giga Drain vs. 104 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Magmortar: 30-36 (9.4 - 11.3%) -- possible 9HKO

Archeops is mine.

Dead Air (Archeops)
Ability: Defeatist
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Acrobatics
- Earthquake / Earth Power
- Hidden Power Grass
- Roost

Archeops makes an excellent partner for SD Samurott. Archeops can take out Grass types with a powerful Acrobatics while also luring in Quagsire, which otherwise will stonewall Samurott to death, and 2HKO's it with Hidden Power Grass. In return, Samurott can easily set up a Swords Dance on the Rock types that trouble Archeops, including Regirock and Rhydon.

Abomasnow @ Never-Melt Ice
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 172 Atk / 172 SpA / 164 Spe
Mild Nature
- Blizzard
- Wood Hammer
- Earthquake
- Ice Shard

Samurott struggles a lot with with doesn't like to deal with Water-types in general like Lanturn and Poliwrath so Abomasnow can help to scare some of those off. It also serves as a decent counter to Grass-types such as Shiftry on Sceptile as well. While Samurott just helps to demolish Fire and Rock-types that scare Snow.

Weezing @ Black Sludge
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 148 Def / 108 Spe
Bold Nature
- Will-O-Wisp
- Sludge Bomb
- Taunt
- Toxic Spikes / Flamethrower

Weezing is a nice partner with Samurott, as it can check the Grass types that threaten it, mainly Sceptile, and also cripple physical attackers with Will-O-Wisp so Samurott can set up a Swords Dance much easier. Samurott can also defeat Fire types that are immune to Will-O-Wisp.

floatzel-female.gif

Floatzel @ Life Orb
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam
- Focus Blast
- Hidden Power Electric / Baton Pass / Taunt

Although Floatzel took a big hit with the drop of Sceptile, it still makes for a sick Water spam core alongside SD Samurott. Floatzel can weaken traditional SD Samu checks such as Ferroseed, Vileplume, and Pelipper with it's strong coverage options throughout the course of a game , while alternatively SD Samu can weaken typical Floatzel checks such as Lanturn. The two Water types overwhelm the opponents Water resists and eventually will break for each other. Hidden Power Electric works best with SD Samurott due to the recent surge in Water/Flying types, but outside of helping Rott, Baton Pass and Taunt are useful tools for shutting down walls and grabbing momentum.

Here's a cool replay that Kiyo uploaded of Rozes (Metaphysical) showcasing exactly how the core should work in a NU League battle versus Tennis. Albeit, the battle is rather old, but it still demonstrates the main function of the duo and is still very effective in this meta. (Skip to 8:35 to get to the actual game).

mesprit.gif

Mesprit @ Colbur Berry
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Psychic
- Ice Beam
- Healing Wish

Offensive rocks Mesprit is a fun partner for Samurott, handling a lot of things than annoy it such as Weezing, Garbodor, Gourgeist-XL and Vileplume. Healing Wish gives Otter a second chance at sweeping, which can be incredibly dangerous, as many of Samurott's checks get worn down quickly. Mesprit's can also take any one hit from Sceptile and retaliate back with Ice Beam, allowing Otter to clean up matches with ease.

Articuno @ Life Orb
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Freeze-Dry
- Hurricane
- Substitute/Frost Breath
- Roost

Articuno is a good partner for Sam cause it can wreck bulky waters such as Mantine, Quag and Pelipper and grasses such as Vileplume or Gourgeist with Freeze Dry/Ice coverage or set up subs on the majority of them. Even if they have a Ferro , Cuno can stall out Gyro Ball's with pressure + Roost and weaken it for Sam. Even Weezing, a decent check to non-Lum Samurott, has stopped carrying Flamethrower recently for any combination of Taunt/memento/Pain Split/TSpikes in its last 2 slots which allos Cuno to double into a predicted switch and get off a free sub. Also a plus is that Sam can deal wth Bulky Rocks/Fires that are a pain for Cuno. The only major issue is fast Electric types or things like Mag that threaten the core however Hurricane can 2hko Mag (if you hit lol).

Vileplume @ Black Sludge | Effect Spore
248 HP / 136 Def / 56 SpAtk / 68 SpDef | Modest
Giga Drain | Sludge Bomb | Hidden Power [Ground] | Moonlight

what threatens rott? faster grass and electric types. What beats those? Vileplume. pretty sound logic there so there isn't a ton of explaining to do. the spread is just something i crafted that lets you still beat scarf sawk, check sceptile alot better, and provide a little more offensive presence than a normal vileplume while doing some cool things like 2HKOing fast skunk and guaranteeing the 3HKO on steelix w/ hp ground.

479-spin.png

Rotom-Fan @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Volt Switch
- Air Slash
- Will-O-Wisp
- Trick
Rotom-Fan is partner that helps weaken grass types for SD rott, also helps handle faster threats like Sceptile and Scyther that can outspeed and threaten Samurott. Standard Rotom set with Volt Switch and Air slash for decently powered stab options that each have their own benefits. Will-o-wisp and trick are useful utility options in the very likely event that Rotom loses its scarf during a battle. Meanwhile, Samurott can bust through the bulky ground types in the tier that don't mind taking advantage of a Rotom choice locked into Volt Switch or Air Slash.
