Nuzlocke Challenge

Story

Part 1: Outset to Greatness!

Hi, Jason here, my journey starts with my mom telling me to get the hell out the house because Professor Oak was waiting for me. She hates having people wait, so she expects me to take after her and be everywhere 10 minutes before I have to. I leave the house and head to Gary's house and talk to his pretty sister for a bit before heading down the lab to figure out that Oak isn't there. I get rushed out the house for an Old Man who isn't even where I'm supposed to find him...fantastic. I leave and figured I would head to the grass towards Viridian hoping to find him, low and behold he comes running warning me about any Pokemon that I would encounter would basically kill me unless I had a Pokemon of my own. Anyways, I follow him to his laboratory and picked up my first Pokemon: Bulbasaur, whom I nicknamed Mandra. Ready to leave, I head for the door, but that antsy ass Gary had other ideas and challenged me to a battle.

==BATTLE!==

Jason vs. Gary #1, GO!

Gary sends out his Charmander, who was infinitely lamer than my Mandra. Mandra lets out a mighty growl to make Charmander quiver in its track and make his impending scratch weaker. Mandra counters with a Tackle, slamming Charmander to the ground with a serious thud. Mandra leaps back with a smirk and stomps his foot into the ground telling Charmander to bring the fire (not literally, of course). Charmander answered the call with another Scratch to Mandra head which left him in a bad way, but Mandra ain't no punk and shook it off and finished off Charmander with another massive tackle which would make NFL players question their training. Victorious!

==END BATTLE!==

Gary hmphed off like the bitch he is saying something about telling his sister to not give me a Town Map. What? He don't know she likes me, silly Gary, she'll give me anything. I go and pick up the town map then hop to Viridian City.

I get to Viridian after encountering a lone Pidgey which gets demolished handily. I heal up for posterity sakes and go pick up Oak's parcel. Before heading back I go scope out the city some more. "I'm gonna own this bitch" I murmur to myself before noticed an Old Man laying on the ground to the north. I go up and see what's up and find out he needs coffee. I look to my right and see a house, then look back at the woman next to him, "Can't you like, I dunno, go there and make/ask for some coffee?" I ask. She just shrugs and I leave plenty perplexed.

I return to Pallet Town to deliver he parcel and I pick up my Pokedex alongside Gary. I receive my Poke Balls and start towards Viridian...again, but this time armed to snag some pokemon. Mandra gets some nice training under his belt and learns Leech Seed. Yay to healing during battle! I heal up in Viridian again and head to Route 2 hoping to snag a Pidgey. First encounter...Rattata, bleh. I caught it figuring I could use it to abuse Cut a bit later. Nicknamed Jerry.

I commence to take Jerry through the riggers of training because I could use another even leveled Pokemon alongside Mandra so we the grass! After taking out many Pidgeys and fellow Rattatas in route 1, Jerry finally learns a new move in Quick Attack, and proceeds to level 10 which makes me very happy. I head over to Route 22 to catch something else to join in on the fun. First encounter was a level 4 Mankey! I can use him! I send out Jerry to soften it up with a Tackle. Critical Hit...WHAT?! You're an asshole Jerry...

Pissed off at not getting a new pokemon from this route I head up the Route to investigate it some since it didn't look like much so far. Who do I run into on this destitute route? Of course, that bitch Gary. He spouts something about the Pokemon League and how I don't stand a chance, whatever. He challenges me to a battle again asking if my Pokemon have gotten stronger...um...yeah...

==BATTLE!==

Jason vs. Gary #2, GO!

We both had 2 Pokemon coming into this battle, so things were kinda even. I send out Jerry even though I was pissed off at him for pulling that Critical out his ass, while Gary sends out his lowly Pidgey. Jerry and I both scoff at it since Jerry has romped 10s of theses on the road to get here so far. Even if it was higher leveled, we both felt it didn't stand of beating us. Jerry leaps into the air and lashes the little bird with its tail which frazzles the young'un and makes it a bit more vulnerable, while Pidgey counters with a high speed Tackle attack. Jerry shakes it off, digs his feet into the ground, and explodes out for a vicious Quick Attack. Pidgey whips some sand into my little fella's eyes, cheaping whore, but that didn't stop Jerry from ending things with another perfectly executed Quick Attack.

2-1 Jason

Gary sends out his Charmander to face down my Mighty Mouse. Charmander looks raring for battle, but Jerry ain't scared! Jerry takes off and slides passed the young lizard with his tail whipping about, giving Charmander the same treatment Pidgey got earlier. Charmander, got up, faced my Rattata and unleashed a big sweeping motion with his arm and lashed out with a Scratch attack which hurt Jerry a bit. Jerry rebounded and sped into Charmander with a big Quick Attack, taking away a bit over half his health. That pissed off Charmander because his next Scratch attack critically hurt my Rattata, leaving him with 4 HP. Fearing a miss via Sand-attack, I heal up using the Potion I found earlier on Route 22, and finish off Charmander with my next Quick Attack, victorious!

2-0 Jason

==END BATTLE!==

Gary says something I don't pay attention to and he walks off with his tail between his legs. I head back to the Pokemon Center, time to head to the Viridian Forest.

Team:
pkfrlg001.png
Mandra, level 11
Tackle, Growl, Leech Seed, Vine Whip.

The leader of the team. He's brave, vocal, and commands respect, but gives it in return. His only quip about Jerry is his lack of seriousness, but values him as a team member.

pkfrlg019.png
Jerry, level 11
Tackle, Tail Whip, Quick Attack

First new member of the team, immediately added some fun to juxtapose Mandra's seriousness on the team. He's a jokster and it wears on Mandra a bit to the point that Mandra will bark at Jerry. Hopefully it doesn't escalate to violence... Maybe those two can coexist and learn from one another, but that will take time.

Part 2: The Forest and You!, coming soon!

Part 1: Fuzzy dreaming

I had a very weird dream that day. I dreamed about Prof. Oak giving me a lesson about life or something, which I didn't really pay much attention to, of course. Oddly, though, at one point he asked for my gender and my name. Um. Uh... Dur.
Then he told me he had a grandson. k. He told me we had been rivals since babies. The mandatory mental picture of a baby attempting to choke another one flashed through my mind, though I couldn't finish the thought since he immediately asked for his grandson's name. Dude. DUDE. I had to fight the temptation of saying "penis",, but I figured since he is an old man and stuff it'd be a bad deed, so I just told him his real name, Blue.
"...Oh, I remember now! It's Blue... isn't it?"
Uh... nevermind.

Feeling dizzy and heavy I woke up.

Part 2: Stupid Blue

After realizing the date and time, I suddenly snapped and came to my senses. I dressed up, took a mint (brushing my teeth wasn't an option here), and rushed down the stairs. My mother blurted some stupid shit about watching T.V and didn't even say bye. Stop watching that damn box, dammit.
I quickly ran to Oak's lab to pick up my surprise (which stupid Blue had ruined), but found no more than a wild Blue waiting for Oak. Thinking he probably went to Viridian for some thing or the other, I decided to set out and look for him. I was about to leave town and wander into the tall grass, the roaming place for the wild. I was feeling like a badass freedom wanderer, so I wasn't really thinking at the time. (Un)Fortunately, the old guy stopped my right before reaching the grass, and told me to follow him to ZE LAV. I went, picked up my Charmander, and went for the door, but Blue didn't think so.
OMGOMGOMGBATTLE! ...but he failed!
"I picked the wrong pokémon." coldly, he said. I thought I heard a crack here.

Oh. My. God.

Just started an Emerald Nuzlocke, and in the very first battle against May, my beloved level 6 Treecko Fella was cruelly struck down by Torchic crithax.

~Restart time~

Yeah, I also skipped catching there last time, but I was just checking.

Oh, by the way, I had written Part 3, but for some reason my internet decided to be a bitch and disconnect, and I didn't save it. Enh... maybe tomorrow I'll re-write it.

Part 2: The Forest and You!

I venture into the Viridian Forest to get me to Pewter and hoping to catch a Caterpie to train into a Butterfree to use Flash (I think it can use Flash) later in the game. I venture into the first patch of grass hoping against hope I get Caterpie first. I run into a Metapod...#&%$#**%! I reluctantly catch it and foresee the hard time of switch grinding I have to do to get this thing to level 10 to evolve, 5 annoying levels away. I nickname her Monarch.

I proceed my way through the maze of a forest, using Bulbasaur against nearly all Weedles I come in contact with not wanting to risk poison and caught with my pants down.

I make it out of the Forest and to Pewter City with two exhausted Pokemon and a Metapod fresh as a daisy, the bastard. I heal up and proceed to train up Metapod and my other pokemon a bit before taking on Brock. Painstaking it was, but I finally got Monarch to level 10 and she is now a nice, slightly less useless, Butterfree. I get Mandra and Jerry to levels 14 and 13 respectively before setting foot into the Gym.

The Gym was damn huge and mighty impressive. I romp Brock's flunky with a few Vine Whips from Mandra and get onto Brock himself. My first Gym battle, I will surely remember it.

==BATTLE!==

Jason vs. Brock, Gym Battle #1

3-2

I send out Mandra, naturally because momma ain't raise no fool, while Brock sends out his rock Pac-man with 2 arms. It lands on the rocky battle field with a giant thud. Mandra was amped just as much as I was for my first gym battle. I commanded him to unleash hell with Vine Whip. Large green whips protruded out the sides of the bulb on his back, wrapped around Geodude, and progressively slammed him into the rocky floor repeatedly. He never stood a chance, OHKO. Mandra was so excited swirls of powder started twist amidst the bulb, he was learning Poisonpowder and Sleep Powder. I let him learn Sleep, but not Poison.

3-1 Jason

Brock immediately brings out his rock snake Onix to stare down Mandra. Despite his large size, Mandra wasn't shaken. Mandra gave Onix the same treat as Geodude, except that Onix was too heavy and was sufficiently whipped into shape by a nice OHKO Vine Whip. Victory!

3-0 Jason

==END BATTLE!==

Brock presents me with the Boulderbadge, I shake his hand and leave patting Mandra and very proud of his efforts. I heal at the Pokemon Center and start my way towards Mt. Moon. I heard that was the way to Cerulean.

Part 3: Sprockets and Mounds of Rock...ets towards Cerulean, coming soon!

Team:

~Sleep Powder
~Leech Seed
~Vine Whip

Jerry, level 13

~Tail Whip
~Quick Attack
~Hyper Fang

In the midst of training up for future areas, Jerry was blessed with the power to finally utilize those buck teeth of his with Hyper Fang. It's incredibly useful coming off of 120 BP so early in the game. He still jokes with Mandra, but he has toned it down a bit. He does mess with Monarch though. Gotta pick and choose your battles it seems

pkfrlg012.png
Monarch, level 10
~Harden
~Confusion

Not much use for now, if she can learn Flash, that will be her designated duty, one she will do with pride. She gets along great with Jerry, they do share the same nature. She doesn't dare bother Mandra, she's a little intimidated.

This is an awesome concept. I just read about this yesterday and it has given me reason to play the game again. It has always been far too easy to advance through the game and this will be cliffhanger stuff, especially the connection and death of a companion.
Brilliant idea. Going to start on emerald right away.......as I dont want to lose all the stuff I had done on diamond.
Little mudkip. Lets do this!

Does it still count as a Nuzlocke run if you just beat the game with your starter? Because that's what I do with most of my single player runs anyway.

I almost never black out and I'm pretty sure I've played a few games in which I don't buy any healing items. You don't really need to when your starter is like level 80 by the time you reach the Elite Four.

Lol this is a good point. But I do think poison damage is a massive threat to you. You cant buy antidote and once it is dead, you have nothing to rely. You'll get squashed. its risky because you have no backup, that starter dies and your dead.

Oh that's right! I remember now, my grandson's name is PENIS!

Well I just learnt the hard way of only using the starter. I intended to use others but all the wild pokies i ran into first have been awful......Long story short, level 25 Muddy marshtomp kickin ass everywhere. Run into my rival out of nowhere and her leaf counter killed me. Thought I was game over for sure but my level 8 oddish (weed) poisoned the sceptile and my level 11 marril (watermouse) did just enough to stall it out.

So sad for my mudskipper but he sacrificed himself to save the mission. Now it is up to this little Supermouse Marill with a terrible nature and the wrong ability to resurect the team.

Cmon little dude!

Part 3: Sprockets and a Mound of Rock...ets towards Cerulean!

I depart Pewter City for Route 4 with hopes of making my team stronger. Since there's a myriad of trainers on this Route, I decide it was a good time to get Jerry up a few levels on these trainers. Jerry runs roughshot through the first couple via Hyper Fang and Quick Attacks. I bypass a couple trainers and head for the grass hoping to not kill the pokemon I run in to so I can add to my collection. I run into a Mankey, again, but this time I wouldn't use Jerry, I knew better. Mandra comes out and attaches a Leech Seed to Mankey and watches as his health dwindles to catchable levels and it takes 2 pokeballs to snag Dynamo, which is what I will call him.

I run back to Pewter, heal, and decide to train Dynamo in the grass. He was at level 7 when he started and after a few dozen encounters with bugs, birds, and rats, he reaches level 9 and I plan to take him to Route 4 for some tougher training to grow faster.

I run into a trainer, but he only had a Rattata which I felt Mankey could take. He starts off with a Tail Whip and Dynamo leers at Rattata, both getting a bit frazzled. I figured Dynamo could take the next hit and I could take it out with Low Kick, except that I wasn't ready for Critical Hit Quick Attack...SHIT! What is it with Rattatas getting critical hits on Mankeys?! Seriously! Dynamo, I barely knew you...Pissed off, I send out Mandra to wish with a swift Vine Whip.

I get to the Pokemon Center near Mt. Moon and deposit Mankey forever. A little distraught, I decide to go through Mt. Moon with just Mandra and Jerry, raising hell and leaving bodies in my wake. After Mandra learned Razor Leaf as a Bulbasaur since I kept him from evolving, I finally let him evolve into an Ivysaur!

I made short work of all the Team Rocket members that made the mistake of getting in my way, in the mean time catching a Zubat and picking up the Helix Fossil.

I arrive in Cerulean after talking to the karate experts about Mega Punch and Kick and catching a Female Spearow whom I named Nequam (it means bad in Latin).

Part 4: Bikinis and Jiggly Bits, coming soon!

Team:

pkfrlg002.png

The leader of the team no doubt. With newly found power comes newly found dignity and responsibility to keep the team alive and afloat.

Long time no posty, until I saw this thread. GREAT way to spice up pokemon for a bit!

I'm taking the challenge myself (Nuzlocke rules) on Sapphire. Let me say that so far the first pokemon I have found in every route except for 101 has been Zigzagoon (I'm at the route before the first gym). Not so fun. Torchi (named Hero) has been incredibly useful though :happybrain:

I'm logging the important stuff in a word file so I can turn it into a comic later. Hopefully I'll be able to upload it if I get far enough!

I have been doing a Nuzlocke run in Emerald for a while now (aka I started yesterday), though i'm too lazy to write a story. Anyway I just want to tell everyone about my recent trials and tribulations.

I have all the basic clauses on as well as no healing items ever (well, pre E4) and SET instead of SWITCH. The back story is that my Combusken (Jamie), Kadabra (Mustachio), and Loudred (Curb Stomp) are about to challenge Wattson. To make a long story short, due to incredible parahax (or rather, due to a lack of opposing parahax from kadabra's snychronize) my Combusken dies to Wattson's manectric. In fact, I almost got swept by his manectric, but my not-quite-full-health kadabra tanked manectric's +2 quick attack with 2 health remaining and finnished him off with psybeam so the casualties ended with Jamie.

Although i won, I was crushed, and I immediately was worried about the Noman battle, as Jamie was basically my plan for that. Lets face it, a kadabra or a loudred isn't gonna tank shit from a slaking or a belly drum linoone. I immidediately was thinking about who i was gonna replace him with, and the only thing i had that could possibly work was Rocky, my untrained geodude from granite cave with a horrible nature (quiet). I then relalized that i could possibly catch a machop or a torkoal from Firey Path. I grab my token numel from route 112 (Krakatoa) on the way, then i get to firey path and.... another fucking numel (Numa Numa). Great. After thinking a bit, i get a plan. I decide to sacrafice getting a pokemon from the desert later to repeatedly rock smash the rocks near mauville on route 111 untill I get a new geodude, hopefully with a better nature. I check my new geodude's (Rocky II) nature and... docile. Blarg nuteral nature. However, Jamie's nature was docile as well and I take this as a sign that he is Jamie's pre-ordained replacement.

I start switch-training Rocky II (thank god they put that rest house on route 112 as my loudred got poisoned by a trainer's shroomish's effect spore, and there was no way I would have made it back to Mauville) when I get to route 113 and step on my first grass tile and... OMG ITS A SKARMORY!!!!!!!! I catch it and kick Rocky II out of my team (Krakatoa the numel is better than him, Zippo the electrike has valuable paralysis for catching stuff, and Big Bertha the slakoth is my dedicated HM slave). I decide to name my new skarmory Savoir, as she will undoubtedly save me when we face Norman.

So that's all, I'll just wanted to post this little part of my journey as I found it interesting. I may post again with an update later, but only if something else exciting happens. Good luck to everyone else with their Nuzlockes!

Yeah, playing with only your starter is riskier, but you'll probably pick up more than enough healing items and in most cases your overleveled Pokemon will just OHKO everything. I just think it's easier to just play that way, whether you're Nuzlocking or not. Obviously you can't do that with every starter or every game though. Even when I do use other Pokemon, it's usually just a core team of 2-4. And when I feel that my starter outlived its usefulness, in the box you go! (e.g. Chikorita)
I actually tried Nuzlocking Fire Red and it got pretty boring. I had a core of three Pokemon that got overleveled without any grinding, I boxed and ignored everything else, and nothing ever came even close to dying. Every other Nuzlocke run I see seems to be of someone capturing and leveling every Pokemon from every route regardless of species or nature (I even IV-checked my captured Pokemon...), most of which eventually die because they're underleveled or just plain worthless.
Perhaps I'm just not getting it. I thought this would be fun when I read the comics; I'm a fan of "Lost" and I enjoyed the idea of adding narrative and emotional content into an otherwise pretty straightforward game, but so far it's been a big disappointment.

The problem, as I see it, is overlevelling. A Nuzlocke challenge is no fun if you're never in any danger; if you've got three Pokémon who can OHKO everyone, there's not much point playing. Hence a lot of the optional rules try to limit overlevelling somehow; like, you can only use each Pokémon Centre once and can't buy healing items, or you're not allowed to grind at all, or what have you. The most fun part of the challenge to me seems to be when you're just starting a new game, and finding the randoms that you'll have to train up.

If you use one pokemon you risk running into something that utterly destroys it, but have crazy high levels. If you use three, not only do you have better coverage but you have 3 well-leveled pokemon. If you have six, each individual one will be lower, making it easier to lose pokemon, but harder to lose your whole team.

The most fun part of the challenge to me seems to be when you're just starting a new game, and finding the randoms that you'll have to train up.

Yeah, I thought so too, but then as soon as I ran into a Bold Pidgey and a Modest Mankey, and then a Weedle and a Rattata, I realized, "Hey, wait a minute... I don't HAVE to use shitty Pokemon!"

The problem, as I see it, is overlevelling. A Nuzlocke challenge is no fun if you're never in any danger; if you've got three Pokémon who can OHKO everyone, there's not much point playing.

That I can see, but sometimes the games doesn't do you any favors by presenting you with a bunch of trainers whom are susceptible to what you are using. Why risk losing one of your other pokemon when you can easily defeat it via type weakness from your stronger pokemon?

Right now on my Nuzlocke, I'm pretty overleveled and I just reached Celadon since my Core pokemon was blessed by what I faced (I started with Bulbasaur, now have a Fearow who likes all the Bug trainers on the road, and I have Dugtrio who romped Lt. Surge). This is on Leaf Green, but these things happen I guess.

I've decided to do a Platinum Nuzlocke Challenge using the 2 fundamental rules:

Can only catch the first pokemon in an area
A death means its gone forever.

I am going to try to put it in a story format, which i might change to have characters talking or some such, but im not sure yet.

PROLOGUE: Destiny Awaits.

My legend begins in twinleaf town. After watching a report on the return of the local pokemon professor, Professor Rowan, I was suddenly filled with anticipation, but cant place what it is directed towards. Restless, i headed to my open window and looked towards the sky. It was a sunny summer day with a calming breeze hitting my face and entering my room. The townsfolk were going on their merry way, doing what they do daily. I was able to see Mt. Coronet as well and while the sky was clear, dark clouds loomed over the mountains. I felt it in my heart that it was going to be a long day.

I was soon interrupted by my buddy, Barry, and although he is one who is always in a hurry, it seems he was feeling the same anticipation i was. I caught that he said he was excited about the returning professor and learned that it just so happend the he resides in the neighboring town of Sandgem. My heart filled with greater anticipation, and before i could tell Barry that i felt that it would be important to meet with him, he was already rushing out, challenging me to a race to see him as he was leaving my home. I quickly grabbed my things to meet with Barry on the outskirts of town.

We were both met with the same daunting image: tall grass filled with the dangers of wild pokemon. Since both of us lacked pokemon partners, it was dangerous to go alone. Barry had the idea that if we ran fast enough through the grass to the next town, we wouldnt get attackted. He and I were adamant about reaching to ROwan, so we both agreed to charge at the same time. Just as we were about to run, we were caught by surprise by an unfamiliar voice behind us.

We turned around and were frozen with excitement; It was Professor Rowan! He was with his assistant, Dawn, who was also carrying a briefcase. We got lectured on how dangerous our idea was, which caused Barry and I to feel embarrassed to meet Rowan this way. Rowan could see it in our faces, and tried to cheer us up by asking us just how much we loved pokemon. After telling him about our feelings of anticipation, he told us that in his briefcase, he held 3 pokemon and asked us if we would like one. We both answered with a confident yes, and now came the difficult choice of which pokemon to choose. Our destiny would begin as soon as we made a decision and we would begin our adventure.
