With its unique typing and high stats all around the board, Heatran makes for a bulky attacker able to threaten all kinds of Pokemon in the tier. Magma Storm allows Heatran to trap and potentially remove opposing Pokemon, as well as chipping them down with its passive damage. Earth Power hits Toxapex and Fire-types such as Cinderace, Iron Moth, Volcanion, and opposing Heatran for super effective damage. Taunt can be used to stop Toxapex's Recover and Galarian Slowking's Chilly Reception and Slack Off, thus allowing Heatran to trap them. Heatran is an effective Stealth Rock user thanks to its good matchup against common entry hazard removal options in Defog Corviknight and bulky Court Change Cinderace. Tera Blast Grass gives Heatran a way to hit Water-types such as Rotom-W, Hisuian Samurott, and Azumarill, as well as threatening a OHKO against Great Tusk. Furthermore, Tera Grass turns Heatran's Ground and Water weaknesses into resistances, improving its matchup against the aforementioned Pokemon as well as Volcanion and letting it potentially trap the likes of Dondozo and Clodsire. Leftovers lets Heatran heal throughout the game and makes it easier for it to trap its targets. Air Balloon is another option that allows Heatran to take a hit from Pokemon that would usually target it with Earthquake or Earth Power such as Enamorus, Baxcalibur, Ursaluna, and opposing Heatran and heavily damage them. The matchup against opposing Heatran also makes a Timid nature desirable to outspeed the other and hit it with Earth Power; it also lets Heatran outspeed the likes of Modest Gholdengo, Adamant Baxcalibur, and Volcanion. Alternatively, Heatran can opt to run a Modest nature to further boost its power.
Heatran usually finds itself on bulky offense teams due to its ability to threaten defensive Pokemon and common forms of entry hazard control. Kingambit appreciates Heatran's support against Will-O-Wisp users in Cinderace, Dragapult, and Moltres and its ability to take on walls such as Corviknight, as well as Dondozo and Great Tusk if Terastallized. Heatran's ability to force heavy damage against Amoonguss, Hatterene, and defensive Zapdos makes it a good Great Tusk partner. Great Tusk, in turn, provides Rapid Spin support to keep the field clear from entry hazards, which Heatran tends to get worn down by. Zapdos can defensively check Fighting-types that outspeed Heatran, such as Swords Dance Iron Valiant, Zamazenta, Sneasler and offensive Great Tusk, as well as Hisuian Samurott, which tends to use Heatran as an opportunity to fire off Ceaseless Edge. Enamorus is also able to check Iron Valiant, Zamazenta, Great Tusk, and Hisuian Samurott, though it struggles to safely switch into them due to its lesser bulk. Dragapult can take on the Dragon-types that don't take much damage from Heatran's attacks such as Dragonite, Walking Wake, and Garchomp. Furthermore, its Water resistance and Fighting immunity let it answer Volcanion and Zamazenta aiming to KO Heatran. Lastly, Rillaboom's ability to summon Grassy Terrain via Grassy Surge provides Heatran with extra passive recovery, boosts the power of its Tera Blast Grass, and weakens the damage it takes from Earthquake, letting Heatran survive physically defensive Great Tusk's Earthquake from full health.
