Old fansites

So if you were around back in like, 2008 or something, you may remember the times where people would run fan websites for their favourite things, usually game characters. Most have either died out, become popular forums, or became something else, but there are a few that still exist. If I recall correctly, Japan still has a very strong culture around these, but the west and most other cultures have largely abandoned it in favour of social media.

I think one of the fansites I remember most is The Bowser Shrine, which was one of the first websites I actually accessed as a kid, I think it was like 2008 or something. It's mainly because of this old fan fiction which...is interesting to read these days. The person who runs it is actually a pretty notable Melee player for being one of the few Bowser players to see success. Over a decade later and it's still chugging along, which is very impressive. You can still see old netspeak around the place, as well as mentions of Photobucket and stuff which aged me by like 50 years.

Anyone else have stories or something to share about these?
 
yes it was called weareawesomeness and they did weekly comedic reviews of new naruto, one piece, and bleach manga chapters

Very convenient that they put the date in the title. Used to watch these videos every day after school in like the 5th grade or so. I never did speed runs, and the only games I had were original Metroid and Zero Mission, but I was so fascinated by all of the sequence breaking and other time-saving tricks people had here. And I loved reading the "maru mari" sprite comic and repeating all of the jokes to friends at school. Especially the sexual innuendo ones to make me seem more grown up, though I didn't really understand all of them until a few years ago.

Used to read Naruto information all day here in elementary school too. Wikis weren't really a big thing yet, so this is where I got all my biographies and images. It's what came to mind but...to my surprise it still had an update as late as last April, though activity seemed to take a dive around 2018. None of the images seem to be hosted anymore either.


There are definitely a lot more, but these are the ones that come to mind off the top of my head

I did not visit this site as a kid because I did not discover The Red Hot Chili Peppers until later. But this site has a great name and it has a banner made in MS Paint with Comic Sans so it deserves mentioning.

This one is still being updated, with the most recent post being from this May. But honestly that just makes its silly format even better.

I used to love glitch sites like this. I remember saving in glitch city and moving tile by tile to find the limits of it before it would freeze. I also remember being obsessed with trying to use glitch city to find my way into the infamous sides of Pallet Town. I never did find a way in... Speaking of glitch city, there was a fansite called that, which naturally also detailed various glitches. There's a wiki with the same name, but I'm not sure if it's descended from it or not. Anyways, one of the glitches I remember trying was let you change your trainer gender in Crystal, and surprisingly it actually worked (there was a lot of bullshit on these kinds of pages)! What it didn't mention was that every Pokemon in your box got deleted. Be careful with HRT, folks.
