Introduction

Smogon's Official Ladder Tour (OLT) is starting soon, many players will be hitting the ladder for the chance to win their very own trophy (
). I will be recommending teams for each tier of the ladder. You guys can take these teams to not only possibly have success on the ladder but also know what to prep for when you spend your weeks trying to claim a playoff spot.

1000-1400

So, at this part on the ladder you are trying to get out of it as fast as possible. Generally you will see things like pikachu, alolan sandslash, at best umbreon. You will be using not only teams that are successful there but also generally bring you fast games so you can proceed to the next tier of players on the ladder with a quickness.

Aurora Veil has always has a pretty prominent spot on ladder and can consist of multiple variants. This variant in particular focus around having to completely read your opponents plays and being consistent. However, that differs from how it is played on lower ladder. Low ladder allows you to almost always be able to lead with ninetales and set up veil. Usually your opponent won’t bother switching and will practically let you set up with any mon you choose. IF they do decide to try and play around the team, once you set up veil, you can instantly dominant any low ladder team. If you run into a speedy mon like specs hp steel noivern and lose your ninetales, the team always has other means of winning such as z tail glow mana, DD ttar, and dd + coil zygarde which is the real backbone of the team. If you mess up with this team or get haxed on low ladder, the chance to regain momentum is almost always within reach and provides any user with a comfortable laddering session.

The concept of the team is simple you set up your hazards most important is webs and proceed to attempt to win with your numerous sweepers. You have bisharp to punish potential defoggers while mimikyu stops the rare rapid spin. Generally zygarde and pinsir are the you premier sweepers and you are depending on them to clutch games out for you. You depend on mimikyu heavily vs playstyles like rain while you depend on bisharp vs mew bulky offenses. This team can generally get a good match up vs most meta-game trends.

I wanted to try out koko with Hawlucha but didn't like how the hawk got hard stopped by the common Zapdos and it was hard to fit a mon that was viable and could offensively pressure out Zapdos. Mega Swampert came along and made me build this beauty. It's very nice how Hawlucha and Swampert work together breaking walls for each other along with Hawlucha being able to presence annoying mons to rain such as ferrothorn. So, there is also the aspect of ferro and kingdra naturally doing their normal roles on a rain team. Now, another interesting aspect is the koko set. Zamrock made the very amazing set in mean look koko which I must say I thought was stupid at first but after using it my self I saw how great it is. You need skill to use this set but it certainly is a great stall breaker for rain and is able to remove mons like amoon and mega venu and even tang easily...along with heavily weakening ferro. There is also the second and original option for a koko set in all out attacker which gives you a better match up vs offensive teams basically. So, basically one koko set gives u an auto win vs offense and another helps you remove bulky shit for the other members. The hawlucha is evd to out-speed excadrill out of sand for anyone wondering..I know its not realistic to see excadrill but if u hop on the ladder you just increased your chances. This team is not only successful on ladder but did well in wcop and is the most used rain ive seen on ladder.

In the middle of the ladder, the goal is to climb steadily and you will run into bulky offense teams often. These teams generally consist of a defensive backbone of 2-3 mons (say mew, tang, tran) and some breakers with mons that match up well vs offense. Veil HO is also very common in this part of the ladder as players try to speed through it quickly. To be successful here, the key is to use consistent teams that have good maneuverability against most of the meta.

Hi, I'm sabella. So this is not an original team as many of you know it was a team I took from xtrashine and just edited a bit and he made some edits himself after i sent him the team. This is a great systematic offense to use from about 0-1800s on the ladder. It plays pretty consistently only really having big troubles with tapu lele since alot of the team is made up priority. It can also struggle with taunt koko leads and ash gren which i usually boom vs if they lead it and stall depending on the style of stall but all in all it works pretty well. Zapdos can also be a pain but the best bet is to try and muscle through it by sacking something to weaken it alot then do ur best to not let it heal up.

The best way to play is to lead elf set rocks and see if u can pick off any pokes with the moveset, specifically lando. Not much predicting involved with this team because when one member dies another one can usually come in and set up on what killed the previous mon. There will be certain instances where u will have to use ur judgement as far as prediction on the defensive end but i tend to play this pretty aggressive. Any questions ask empo hes been the ladder slave for this team.

The team is an almost perfectly crafted balance with very few weaknesses. The defensive cores of Pex and steela with mew and tang check almost the entire OU meta. You add the nice offensive presence that ZARD-Y and duggy bring along with the core breaking through fatter teams like stall.

1800-Beyond

In the high ladder, the key is to clutch onto a spot and stay there, avoid tilt at all times. The teams you will be seeing are often tournament teams created by top ou players, different kinds of veil / ho, stall, and often innovative things used by the ladder heroes.

Not a lot to say, grassy terrain supports the entire team. Tran / Toxa / Bulu forms one of the strongest cores in the game covering a vast majority of top threats. There aren't really match ups this team can't win.

I will update this thread when I can. Hopefully you guys enjoy this resource. The teams above can be used in any part of ladder ofc just recommending whats more consistent in each ladder tier.

So I noticed how often tapu koko shows up on the individual teams threat lists. Which set(or sets) do you think are most effective in the current meta. Specifically which sets are the ones that threaten the big meta teams.

Awesome post btw, very informative for someone getting back into the meta

Z Wild Charge mostly. It's really difficult to deal with because of its ability to maintain constant momentum with decently strong U-turns as well as being able to blow away would be checks such as AV Magearna, Mew, and Clefable. Stall teams usually just fall completely flat against it because of its ability to pressure Chansey with Taunt as well as being unable to be trapped by Duggy. Its Speed tier also makes it a nightmare for teams like xtrashine's and the classic Zard-Y build, that relies so much on AV Growth as its Koko check but suffers from being very prone to hazards and U-turn chip.
