Cycle One: Rotom-W

— — — — —
Rotom-Wash @ Wiki Berry / Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 200 Def / 56 Spe
Bold Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Volt Switch
- Pain Split / Defog
- Will-O-Wisp / Thunder Wave

— — — — —

Rotom-W's been receiving plenty of usage as of late in SPL as— with Zygarde's recent departure— it can be finally called a true Ground resist. However it still has some issues with longevity and a handful of particularly powerful wallbreakers, what teammates can remedy these shortcomings? Post away!

Reserving Tornadus-Therian

Tornadus-Therian @ Rocky Helmet

It might be a bit simple, but I think Tornadus-T pairs well with Rotom-W. Rotom can annoy a lot of teams due to its typing and coverage, but it generally lets in grass types if it did not click will-o-wisp on the switch, or if the grass type was brought in on a u-turn/volt switch on the turn rotom switched in. For this reason, Tornadus can come in off a rotom volt switch or even switch into pokemon like kartana, tapu bulu, tangrowth, amoonguss, and mega venusaur to pressure them with the threat of STAB Hurricane/Supersonic Skystrike, knock their items off, or U-turn out and bring in another teammate if the opponent decides to switch out. Tornadus also forms a volt-turn core with Rotom which is very helpful for offensive teams that want to bring in breakers to blow holes in the opposing team early on in the game.

For these reasons, I believe Tornadus-T not only covers some of Rotom's weaknesses, but forms an efficient duo with it in terms of effective team structure.

EVs: 248 HP / 244 Def / 16 SpD
Impish Nature

Mega Scizor and Rotom-W form a pretty good defensive core, with Rotom-W checking Fire-types like Heatran and non-Outrage Mega Charizard X, while Mega Scizor checks Grass-types like Tangrowth, Tapu Bulu and Kartana. Mega Scizor also prevents Pokemon like Reuniclus from setting up against Rotom-W freely and they can pressure Ferrothorn with U-turn and Will-O-Wisp. Rotom-W can also switch into Celesteela or even Tornadus-T, greatly helping Mega Scizor with its sweep late-game. They form a really nice VoltTurn core as well. Will-O-Wisp is slashed with Thunder Wave, as they both have their usefulness. Will-O-Wisp can chip at common Mega Scizor checks like Ferrothorn and Celesteela, while Thunder Wave can catch Pokemon like Heatran or Mega Alakazam, however it may prevent Mega Scizor from getting a slow U-turn.

Here's a Pokemon that has also benefited from Zygarde being gone as well as one that (I believe) challenges Tangrowth as the Regenerator Grass-type option.

Amoonguss @ Black Sludge
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 248 HP / 44 Def / 216 SpD
Calm Nature
- Spore
- Giga Drain
- Hidden Power Fire / Sludge Bomb
- Stun Spore / Toxic

Rotom-W had always usually been paired with Grass-types, and Amoonguss is no exception. Amoonguss easily soaks up Grass-type moves for Rotom-W and can also handle Electric-type moves that would otherwise take a chunk out of Rotom-W, along with other types of moves like Fighting. In return, Rotom-W can easily switch into the Ice-, Fire-, Flying-, and Ground-type moves that damage it quite a bit. What Amoonguss has over Tangrowth, however, is the ability to fit Spore and Stun Spore, let alone having a perfectly accurate sleep-inducing move, on a single moveset. Both of these moves help Rotom-W by being able to pivot with Volt Switch safely if it wishes to not slow pivot. Amoonguss is also able to take on Fairy-types fairly better with its Poison typing, most notably Fleur Cannon from Magearna. Will-O-Wisp from Rotom-W only bolsters Amoonguss's walling capabilities. However, this core will be fairly weak to Psychic-types like Mega Alakazam and Tapu Lele. Even if Tangrowth is considered the better Regenerator Grass-type, Amoonguss does have its advantages in the ability to use two status moves effectively and the addition of resistances to Fairy- and Fighting-type moves and less weaknesses overall.

tl;dr Amoonguss can eat Grass-, Electric-, Fighting-, and Fairy-type moves that would otherwise hurt Rotom-W while also having really nice utility in the ability to run two status moves in its set, which help Rotom-W to pivot more efficiently. As Tangrowth cannot do some of these, Amoonguss can be a viable option instead in exchange for a weakness to Psychic-type moves.

Landorus-Therian @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 244 Atk / 68 Def / 196 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- U-turn
- Stone Edge/Explosion/Punishment
- Defog

Landorus-T forms a very potent volt-turn core with Rotom that pressures all their checks and is a god send for their teammates as well while Rotom checks some problematic pokemon for Landorus, like Scizor, Tornadus, and Celesteela. In return, Landorus can check things like mold breaker Excadrill, Mega Mawile, and acts as speed control to handle very fast pokemon like Mega Alakazam and Garchomp. If it’s running Explosion, then Landorus can very likely take a pokemon down with it. With Punishment, Landorus can handle 2 attacks Reunicles and CM Mega Latias, two things that really annoying for Rotom to have to deal with.

Jirachi @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Iron Head
- U-turn
- Healing Wish
- Fire Punch / Trick

Jirachi and Rotom form a nice VoltTurn core which easily can take advantage of common defensive cores like BuluTran and CelePex. Rotom handles Heatran and pivots on Grounds like Lando and Garchomp for Jirachi, while Jirachi in return can either deal some serious damage to Grasses like Kartana and Ferro with Fire Punch (Iron Head for Bulu) or cripple passive mons like Toxapex and Amoonguss with Trick.

Mega Mawile benefits massively from the fact that Rotom-W tends to force in Pokemon like Tangrowth, which Mega Mawile can easily take advantage of. Furthermore, Rotom-W is a nice check to Ground- and Fire-types like Landorus-T, Garchomp, and Heatran, which can offensively check Mega Mawile.

AV Magearna

Since this Rotom spread is physically defensive, having Magearna as a check special attackers is helpful. Rotom struggles against breakers like Tapu Lele and Mega Alakazam, as well as offensive Magearna and Mega Diancie. AV Magearna handles all of them and improves the matchup against Ash Greninja and Tapu Koko. Rotom beats Heatran and provides a Ground immunity. They work especially well together because they both have access to Volt Switch, enabling them to easily pivot back and forth against each other's checks and counters.

Cycle Two: Ferrothorn

— — — — —
Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 24 Def / 232 SpD
IVs: 0 Spe
Sassy Nature
- Spikes / Stealth Rock
- Leech Seed
- Power Whip
- Gyro Ball / Knock Off

— — — — —

Now that Flying-types and Levitate users are true Ground resistances once again, Grass-types such as Ferrothorn get a lot more leeway and aren't as pressed to be Ground-type checks as they were back in Zygarde metagame, or at the very least a Zygarde check. With that mentality in mind, Ferrothorn got a lot more freedom and is a lot easier to fit on teams, but what kind of teammates can cover its weaknesses and appreciate its support?

Luckily for me, no one chose Ferrothorn for Rotom-W's round, though that might be because it's too basic. But basic sells!

Rotom-Wash @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 200 Def / 56 Spe
Bold Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Volt Switch
- Will-O-Wisp
- Pain Split

Ferrothorn easily soaks up the Grass-type moves Rotom-W is weak to along with Electric-, Psychic-, and Fairy-type moves Rotom-W may not be able to stomach well. Meanwhile, Rotom-W takes on the Fire- and Ground-type moves that threaten Ferrothorn. Rotom-W provides utility in Volt Switch for Ferrothorn by allowing it to slow pivot in with little caution, and Will-O-Wisp helps Ferrothorn tank physical hits more efficiently, allowing it to better set up hazards or Leech Seed and walling in general. Really, the only Pokemon that can be really troublesome to both Ferrothorn and Rotom-W are bulky Grass-types (though some are being used less ever since Zygarde got banned) and Kartana. Otherwise, it's a very solid core that can take on each of their checks without extreme effort, and I may consider it one of the best cores out their since Zygarde's ban due the high benefits both Pokemon have gotten and their already great synergy.

Slowbro @ Leftovers / Slowbronite
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 248 HP / 96 Def / 164 SpD
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Ice Beam
- Slack Off
- Flamethrower / Thunder Wave / Toxic

Ferrothorn's best teammates are Fire-type checks, and Slowbro isn't an exception. It can consistently pivot on Fire-type attacks thanks to Regenerator & Slack Off while also checking other threats to Ferrothorn like M-Medicham and Protean Greninja. In return, Ferrothorn can pivot on Ash-Greninja, Electric-types like Koko, and other special attackers.

Tapu Fini

Tapu Fini @ Leftovers
Ability: Misty Surge
EVs: 224 HP / 216 SpD / 68 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Moonblast
- Taunt
- Defog

Tapu Fini and Ferrothorn work very synergistically together, both in type, by covering each others weaknesses perfectly as well as resisting 15 out the 18 types, and utility, by covering both hazards and removal, as well as relieving pressure of each other. As Ferrothorn sets up spikes, this forces the opposing team to defog more, meaning Fini doesn't need to switch in as much, while Fini can switch in to Ash Gren more easily, stopping Ferro from getting weakened as easily by Dark Pulse. Ferro can also pass Leech Seeds to Fini on common switchins such as Heatran increasing Finis longevity if played smartly.

Just listed a couple sample spread-nature combinations, but there are really unlimited possibilities in that regard. Anyway, Toxapex is a nice defensive pair to Ferrothorn, forming one of the most common defensive backbones encountered on balanced teams!

Alakazam @ Alakazite
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

Pretty simple mzam works great with ferro because it loves spikes to break past some counters like mage and bulu along with acting as an offensive tran switch which ferro appreciates.

Tapu Fini has been receiving a surge of popularity and relevancy as of late, but what teammates can help it perform its role better? And which teammates appreciate the utility it provides?

Volcarona @ Buginium Z
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 248 HP / 112 Def / 148 Spe
Timid Nature
- Quiver Dance
- Flamethrower
- Bug Buzz
- Roost

Volcarona enjoys Tapu Fini's Defog and Misty Terrain, as well as its ability to beat Heatran and other possible things like Nature's Madness. In return, Volcarona can switch on Grass-types like non-ZNormal Kartana, Ferrothorn, and non-Stone Edge Tapu Bulu.

Think Tapu Fini can get away with lacking reliable recovery? Wishful thinking!

Jirachi @ Leftovers
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 248 HP / 196 SpD / 64 Spe
Careful Nature
- Wish
- Protect
- Iron Head
- U-turn

Lack of reliable recovery and heavy reliance on Leftovers holds back Tapu Fini from its full potential; however, Jirachi provides support via Wish to keep Tapu Fini healthy enough to keep beating Pokemon like Heatran and Ash-Greninja, two Pokemon that Jirachi really appreciates being take cared of. In return, Jirachi also can take on Tapu Bulu, Magearna, and others that can simply force Tapu Fini out or use it as setup fodder. Unfortunately, both of these Pokemon still dislike Knock Off, so always be wary when switching with them.

EVs: 92 HP / 252 Atk / 164 Spe
Adamant Nature

M-Maw pairs nicely with Fini for a few reasons. First, M-Maw really hates Tran and Fat Volc, both of which Fini not only handles nicely, but it can also Defog Tran’s hazards away. It also annoys Pex with Nature’s Madness + Taunt, wearing it down so that it doesn’t stomach a +2 Knock so easily. Lastly, Misty Terrain eases setup for Maw by giving it a status immunity. This core really puts pressure on defensive teams and can be added to teams with decent anti-offensive measures.

The steel trapper solves one of Fini's mayor problems: it has almost nothing to threaten opposing Steels without Nature's Madness. And that's what Zone does best. As an added bonus, it has a super good matchup against Toxapex, who can be pretty annoying to deal for Scald sets. The Scarf set also has the added benefit of revenge killing non-Scarf Kartana, at cost of dealing w/ Ferro and other steel worse.

Venusaur-Mega @ Venusaurite

EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Giga Drain / Sludge Bomb
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Synthesis
- Leech Seed / Sludge Bomb

Tapu fini fills the role as the ash gren counter so that venusaur can fully invest in defense to much better handle OUs top physical threats most notably kartana, tapu bulu and mega mawile while not being prone to trapping unlike other 4x grass resists used to answer the former two. Fini can switch into heatran decently and remove hazards which annoy venusaur. Terrain is nice to block wisps from rotom wash or if you want to heal up a teammate, or even fini itself, vs toxapex with leech seed and don't want to risk venu getting scald burned. In addition, pokemon such as mega lati@s and tornadus can still be sludge bomb poisoned as they don't receive finis terrain benefits.
