Week 56 - Buzzwole

:ss/buzzwole:

Buzzwole is a powerful defensive prescence and offensive powerhouse that recently rose to OU due to its ability to handle several incredibly powerful physical attackers while dishing out huge damage in return. Its great offensive movepool and interesting utility options could lend to some alternative approaches however.

:buzzwole:
Buzzwole @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Close Combat
- Earthquake
- Ice Punch
- Poison Jab

With Scarf in its arsenal, Buzzwole can outspeed Pokemon like Landorus-T, Tornadus-T, Weavile, and Blacephalon. It can also outspeed Victini and with it it can revengekill these Pokemon or via a smart prediction, it can nail Landorus-T and Tornadus-T with Ice Punch whereas Cloce Combat hits Weavile and Earthquake is a great way to deal damage on Victini and Blacephalon. Poison Jab is to hit Fairy-types such as Tapu Fini, Clefable, and Tapu Lele. This set can be useful to revengekill the aforementioned Pokemon or just to nail them down easily. Teampartners such as Tapu Fini, Dragonite, Landorus-T, and Magnezone can help in this case to easen up Buzzwoles way and to enhance Buzzwoles potential.

Buzzwole @ Choice Band
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Close Combat
- Leech Life
- Ice Punch
- Earthquake

This set is primarily viable for the lure potential - with the added power of Choice Band, Buzzwole can outspeed and 2HKO usual checks like Toxapex, Slowbro, Corviknight, and Zapdos. Close Combat and Ice Punch are obvious choices, but I went with Earthquake to hit Toxapex the hardest, hit Volcarona without risking Flame Body, and OHKO Galarian Slowking, Victini and Tapu Koko, and Leech Life to cover Slowbro, Mew and Slowking while providing a bit of recovery. I don't think you need Poison Jab or Thunder Punch, since Choice Band Earthquake 2HKOes most Tapu Fini after Stealth Rock and Clefable isn't common.

Bulk up

Buzzwole @ Rocky Helmet

Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 236 HP / 128 Def / 144 Spe

Impish Nature
- Bulk Up

- Drain Punch
- Ice Punch

- Roost

bu buzz isn't the most reliable wincon due to be extremely vulnerable to status and being unable to break through fini, pex and unaware users amongst other things.
what bulk up buzz is good at is anchoring slow and bulky teams against a plethora of physical attackers / setup sweepers in the tier, with kart, non-mixed chomp and weavile being the most relevant. also less common threats like sub bu lando, dd pult, sd bisharp and sd rillaboom are checked by buzzwole without much trouble.

the reason I place this buzz set on slower teams is the requirement of heal bell / aromatherapy support and of a sturdy defensive backbone. this set is not immediately threatening and has a lot of hard checks, so it's wise to take things slowly with it. heatran for example is an astounding partner defensively (tran checks fairy, fire and flying types + many special attackers for buzz, while buzz checks kart, ground, fighting and - to an extent - physical water types like shifu and skewda) and offensively (tran has great matchup vs pex and unawares with toxic and constantly chips fini, especially with stealth rock up).

speed is for adamant bisharp but, since the 240s are crowded, you can go up a few more points to creep speedier defensive lando-t. hp are even for max roost value and reduce stealth rock damage in comparison to the standard 252/248. defense is slightly higher which also gives slightly more value to bulk up and beast boost's defense boosts.

Big Daddy Buzz is the coolest martial artist in the game. This is Expert Belt with elemental punches, as a contrast to full on offensive or defensive sets. It can act as a hybrid between the two, preserving its longevity while dealing solid damage back. Nothing special with EVs, max speed outpaces Bisharp, Heatran, Magnezone, and most Tapu Fini.

Everything that normally tries to come in on buzzwole thinking it only has fighting/ice gets ruined. Kills fairies with metronome poison jab. Heatran and toxaowx with Earthquake. Leech Life is what you click vs offense. Funnily enough, this doesn't readily force out landorus.

Adamant Nature
- Close Combat

- Rock Tomb / Thunder Punch
- Roost

Tired of taking Rocky Helmet chip? Fed up with Static and Flame Body? Still don't want to do any damage? Try Protective Pads!

Despite not being as bulky, this set helps deal with Lando and Garchomp by avoiding Helmet/Rough Skin damage. Rock Tomb is an option for luring Torn-T, who cannot safely switch in to the Rock Tomb without dying to the follow-up Ice Punch. This also works to a lesser extent for Zapdos (you need about 15-20% chip on the Zapdos to get the 2HKO on the switch). Thunder Punch is good for Fini+Pex. Roost is always a fantastic option.

Sub Focus Punch
:Buzzwole: @ Leftovers
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Substitute
- Focus Punch
- Ice Punch
- Leech Life / Drain Punch / Roost / Toxic

I tried this because I wanted to try something unique, if not slightly suboptimal. Anyways, this actually gives you a surprising amount of options, and can help Buzzwole absolutely flatten counters even.

So, why run this?

-Buzzwole hates statuses, whether offensive (burn) or defensive (toxic) variants. Sub bypasses that against most of the relevant status mons that will stay in on buzzwole.

-It’s an offensive set that still has defensive utility. It lets a friggin Buzzwole get a hit off against anything (except dragapult, but just be a Chad like Buzzwole and ice punch on the switch), without being severely weakening. As an additional small defensive point, it’s a Buzzwole. Lots of stuff won’t be able to break the sub, so you’ll have it against a lot of stuff that switches in on you.

-sub Focus punch lets Buzzwole stay in against counters that would switch in and do massive damage without as much risk.

drain vs leech vs roost vs toxic is a preference thing. Ice punch feels mandatory bc of lando and pult and zap etc.

So what do you do against various mons you come in on and that come in on you?

Landorus-T? Sub up or just go for the super strong ice punch

pult? You shouldn’t stay in but you can be a baller and ice punch on the switch (or toxic if you choose to use that)

ferro? Sub up and blow that boy back

Corv?Blow. That. Boy. Back.(252+ Atk Buzzwole Focus Punch vs. 248 HP / 168+ Def Corviknight: 211-250 (52.8 - 62.6%) -- 99.6% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery - so if it switches in, its a 50/50 whether it dies. If it roosts and you focus punch, it’s going down, and if it doesn’t and you switch into something else etc, it’s at low health.)

Fairies? Don’t stay in duh, but hit em on the switch for a nice 40%(clef), 40-55%(fini depending on set), or 58-68%(koko)

pex? I got nothing for you, sorry

Here’s a mid-1400’s (I am not good) replay showcasing how it has often come into play for me (and shoutout to my opponent for being a good guy).

https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen8ou-1428776380 - does 45% to a scarf fini from behind a sub, which let me setup for the last mon priority kill. Plus, he just didn’t care about rotom wash or lando t or ferrothorn, so 3 mons were potential sub fodder.

so yeah, is it good? Idk maybe, but it’s really fun when it works. Oh, and a friend told me to tell you guys to make sure you remember infiltrator is an ability... because some people may forget it sometimes... says my friend.

Fell Stinger + Adrenaline Orb

:ss/buzzwole:
Buzzwole @ Adrenaline Orb
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Fell Stinger
- Close Combat
- Earthquake

- Ice Punch

An offensive set with a twist: fell stinger and adrenaline orb.

Fell Stinger gives you +3 attack when you kill something and Beast Boost gives you another +1. If Lando comes in to stop Buzzwole you kill him easily. A conservative opponent will be cautious around a potential scarf if they see no Helmet or Leftovers, and will often switch into Lando, a 4x resist to Fell Stinger. If that happens, your orb activates, and Buzzwole's bulk and power make him incredibly hard to stop.

252 Atk Buzzwole Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Ferrothorn: 326-386 (92.6 - 109.6%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
+4 252 Atk Buzzwole Ice Punch vs. 248 HP / 220 Def Zapdos: 466-550 (121.6 - 143.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+3 252 Atk Buzzwole Ice Punch vs. 252 HP / 164+ Def Landorus-Therian: 720-848 (188.4 - 221.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Buzzwole also offers incredible defensive utility thanks to its bulk and can dent almost anything if you predict right. EQ is more likely than not to 2HKO Toxapex after rocks, and CC can kill Corviknight with some prior chip.

252 Atk Buzzwole Close Combat vs. 248 HP / 168+ Def Corviknight: 154-183 (38.5 - 45.8%) -- 15.2% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock

This set is especially good against offensive teams that like to go for trades and rely on Lando for defensive utility (which there are many). You turn the tables on him with this set.

Here's a quick set of vest buzz.
Sure some better spreads are possible but really hard to create with using my phone and no other possibilities for now. There's a long I didn't played it and gived spread by memory. Adjust while looking at your team's needs.

:buzzwole: Bulky All-Out :assault-vest:
Centurion (Buzzwole) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 200 HP / 128 Atk / 180 SpD
Impish Nature
- Ice Punch
- Earthquake
- Poison Jab / Iron Head
- Leech Life

Atk let it get atk-boost from beast boost ; have chance to 2hko slowbro.
Def nature let it tank bunch of stuff.
HP reach 405 (4 toss from bliss) and everything else on SpD (a bit of SpD is changing calcs significantly).

This fatty set niche is the diversity of blows it is able to receive, letting you hit back most of the metagame with great damage.
Surprise factor is bonus for sneaky plays.
Better paired with misty-terain or screens (even one). Easy Wish receiver.

Melmetal do the same job better (and aegislash) but they don't have the same elemental resist. + they are playable together with a good fire resist (or rain).

Leech Life help to improve its survival.
Poison jab and ice punch are rng status to cripple defensive core out of heal-beller.
Iron Head to hit Kyurem harder, still hit some fairy but not fini and koko.
Possible to go smack-down instead of ice punch to pressure corv' and zapdos but didn't calc.

I'm lazy to do alot (painful on phone) sorry.
As I said u can adjust spread on team needs.

Salac Berry Endure Reversal Buzzwole

buzzwole.gif

Buzzwole @ Salac Berry
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Endure
- Reversal
- Ice Punch / Earthquake
- Bulk Up / Earthquake

This set aims to sweep a weakened team using Beats Boot and Buzzwole very high Attack stat to wreak havoc with a 200 BP Reversal. You basically want to take hits until you are in range of something or stay in against a strong special breaker that OHKOes Buzzwole so that you can use Endure and active both your Salac Berry and your super powerful Reversal. With a Speed boost and a Jolly nature, Buzzwole reach 423 Speed which means it will Speed tie with Zeraora, but outspeed things like Dragapult and almost all non-Choice Scarf Pokemon. With Beast Boost boosting its Attack stats after each kill, you can easily sweep a team if the Pokemon able to check Buzzwole are dead or weakened enough.

Regarding the moveset, Endure and Reversal are the two main moves you want to run on this set. The two other slots can be filled with different options. You can’t fit coverage to hit specific targets in two moveslots and thus you need to choose what you want to be able to hit. Ice Punch allows you to smack Landorus-T, Dragonite, Dragapult who can still take a boosted Reversal. Earthquake is another option to hit Toxapex and Slowking Galar, and it has a bit more power against neutral Target like Tapu Lele. Lastly, Bulk Up could be an option to raise your Attack stat while a special threat is switching and could help beating things like Dragapult and Tapu Lele without a lot of (or any) chip damage. However, it means that you will have to run one coverage move instead of two. I think the best choice would be to run Bulk Up + Ice Punch so that you can Bulk Up once and then OHKO things like Landorus-T, Dragonite and Dragapult. You won’t do anything to Toxapex and Tapu Fini, but that’s not that much of a problem as you can pair up this Buzzwole set with a Whirlpool Tapu Fini able to trap and delete the opposing Toxapex and weaken enough the opposing Tapu Fini to open the way for Buzzwole. Misty Terrain support is also nice to avoid getting status and left enable to use Endure because of a Burn or a Poison.

Overall, this set can be a nice wincon even if it won’t do much in some matchups. You can capitalize on the fact that the opponent won’t except a Buzzwole able to boost its Speed and may sacrifice important switch-in thinking they can still revenge kill Buzzwole anyway. Of course, this set as flaws because once you’re left with one HP you can be killed by Rocky Helmet or Iron Barbs/Rough Skin recoil and you can get revenge killed by any Priority move and most Scarfers that would still be faster. It’s still a fun set though, and definitely something to try if you want to surprise your opponents with an unexpected Buzzwole sweep.

+1 252 Atk Buzzwole Reversal (200 BP) vs. 248 HP / 168+ Def Corviknight: 384-453 (96.2 - 113.5%) -- 75% chance to OHKO

+1 252 Atk Buzzwole Ice Punch vs. 252 HP / 164+ Def Landorus-Therian: 432-512 (113 - 134%) -- guaranteed OHKO

+1 252 Atk Buzzwole Ice Punch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Dragapult: 326-384 (102.8 - 121.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

+1 252 Atk Buzzwole Reversal (200 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tapu Koko: 294-346 (104.6 - 123.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
