OU Speed Tiers [HTML]

I've uploaded it as an Excel spreadsheet so it's easy to read. For mons I was unsure about, I checked the analysis to see if there was anything not 0 or 252. I tried to avoid speed creep, though for Pokemon like Skarmory—where the standard is 24 Spe EVs—it couldn't really be helped. I also tried to use common judgment. We won't often see Machamp with a Choice Scarf, so I didn't do +1 Machamp. But Scarf Zone/Snow aren't too uncommon, so I put those on there. Things like that.

One thing I'd like to do is clean up certain sections. For instance, has anyone seen Modest Scarf Heatran? Don't they all run Timid? I'd like to take out the Neutral 252 +1 line. Things like that.

Also though, here it is in full text form. If you still want your eyes, I suggest you look at the spreadsheet. In any case, excuse the formatting. Once everything's approved, I'll remove the extraneous information from the text (like IVs). I'll add tier names as soon as this gets approved, so that hopefully none of them change.

Introduction

When making an EV spread for a Pokemon on your team, Speed is often the most important stat. Knowing what a particular Pokemon can and cannot outrun is crucial to battling at a high level. DPP Tyranitar is a great example of the significance of the Speed stat. Its base 61 Speed is not too impressive at first glance, but when maximized and boosted with a Choice Scarf, Tyranitar can outspeed the base 115 Speed tier—notably maximum Speed Azelf and Starmie—as well as slower Pokemon who could otherwise trouble many teams, such as Gengar and Latias. In fact, the ability to counter Latias was one of the main reasons Choice Scarf Tyranitar became so common.

To start, you'll need the maximum Speed of the Pokemon you're considering, which is found on that Pokemon's analysis page. With this information, you can refer to the following tables for Speed numbers for other Pokemon with different EV and nature investments. Determine which threats you wish your Pokemon to outpseed, and distribute EVs accordingly. Note that you need to keep in mind the Speed IV of the Pokemon, a factor that is most relevant for Hidden Power types. Pokemon who have weather-inducing abilities, who utilize moves such as Payback, as well as Pokemon on a Trick Room team, may also wish to be slower than a certain opponent, based on its own Speed stat.

For example, a very common threat in BW OU is Conkeldurr. A Reuniclus user might decide it wants Reuniclus to be slower than Conkeldurr, as the latter has a very powerful Payback. We can see from this table that Conkeldurr, with a neutral nature and 0 Spe EVs, reaches a speed higher than that of Reuniclus with the same. There's more to this puzzle, though: Payback Conkeldurr commonly runs a Speed-reducing nature and a Spe IV of 0 in order to move second as much as possible. This enables Conkeldurr to hit a Speed of 85, granting it a full-powered Payback against neutral-natured Reuniclus, who hits a Speed stat of 96. By giving Reuniclus a Speed-reducing nature, however, we lower its Speed to 86. Reducing its Spe IV to 29 then allows it to reach a Speed of 84, which ensures that Reuniclus will always move after Conkeldurr. This makes Conkeldurr's Payback have 50 Base Power, enabling Reuniclus to beat Conkeldurr handily.

So we see how the Speed stat can be used to ensure the best possible outcome for your Pokemon. This works similarly if you're trying to outspeed a certain Pokemon with a certain boost. For example, let's say you use Agility Lucario to deal with Venusaur in the sun. We can see that Venusaur reaches 518 Speed in intense sunlight. To top that with Lucario, we need only invest 176 Spe EVs and a neutral nature (granted, this assumes you can use Agility to boost Lucario's Speed before Venusaur comes into play).

The asterisks indicate two important notes: if a Pokemon has a * by its name, it often carries a Hidden Power—typically Fire, Fighting, Psychic, or Rock—that requires it to lower its Speed IV by one. If you decide to use this Hidden Power, you will need to account for that accordingly. If a Pokemon has ** by its name, that means that it lowers its IV by 1, but a two-stage boost means that its final Speed will be two lower than the given value.

Edit 8/11/11: v2 put up. Changes:

  • Corrected Accelgor's base Speed
  • Removed Electrode (it was only there because of Accelgor anyway; it's not even in OU top 100)
  • Put asterisks next to Latios, Volcarona, and Espeon signifying a Speed-lowering Hidden Power
  • Revised Introduction because the writing sucked.
Edit 8/24/11: No v3 put up; just a few arrangements. Changes:

  • Made separate tags for each tier
  • Got rid of IVs. Those without IV 31 have it listed in the name.
  • Max Jolly Scizor and 220 Neutral Dragonite have same speed.
  • Named tiers
Edit 10/18/11 (oof): Introduction expanded, 2 Spe IV Bronzong

Edit 2 10/18/11: Goodbye, Excadrill and Thundurus!

Edit 4 1/10/12: Fixed both GP #2 as well as Sirndpt's suggestions.
  • neutral 8 Spe Scizor hits 170 -- Scizor actually is 166 0/0/0, so it hits 168. Added.
  • why the 228 Speed EVs for base 115 mons? this means losing to Scarf Politoed who isn't in the least uncommon. why the neutral Speed nature tier at all - Raikou's the only one who really needs it (and even then only for the really honest people) -- Hmm…I left the 228 +Spe, because that was a common speed in analyses at the time. Took it out now though. I left Raikou's neutral nature, as "honest people" is what we really should be going for, but I removed the rest.
  • 328 / Salamence, Jirachi, Volcarona*, TENTACRUEL, CELEBI*, NINETALES*, ZAPDOS, MEW, VICTINI, FLYGON, STARAPTOR, CHARIZARD / 100 / +Spe / 252 / 0 -- For most, I decided not to add all of the Pokemon with that base Speed, just some common ones to keep it simple.
  • 96 Spe ChestoRest Volcarona and 24 Spe Morning Sun should get +2 listings imo (518 and 484 respectively) -- Change made, but it's 520 -- it only goes down to 518 with a Hidden Power, which is noted.
Plus some other, obviously -- I didn't list them all. But these were the ones for which I had disagreements with.

In any case, done, plus GP 2/2 (thanks a bunch, NixHex). This can go to HTML.

Looked at it, and found one error. Accelgor has a base 145 Speed stat, and its max speed with a + nature is 427 with a 31 Speed IV.

Ok, thanks.

Anything else? I'm going to add asterisks as well for the Latis, who generally run HP Fire, and for the instances of Starmie I missed. Also for Volcarona who might run HP Rock.

you have:
508 / Mienshao / 105 / +Spe / 252 / 1 / 31
but where does meinshao get this speed boost from?

That would be very helpful, but asterisk Latios's name only, because most Latias I've seen don't run HP Fire, but then again, I might be wrong.

Excadrill and Thundurus have been banned to Ubers in the recent suspect vote, you can remove them.

after the detailed OU stats came out i decided to run through them and compile a list of what was missing from the current version of this article. these are only for the top 100 OU mons - i don't mind going down further but that's like Ludicolo / Spiritomb / Umbreon / Ambipom territory. anyway

Introduction

When making an EV spread for a Pokemon on your team, Speed is often the most important stat. Knowing what a particular Pokemon can and cannot outrun is crucial to battling at a high level. DPP Tyranitar is a great example of the significance of that stat the Speed stat is Tyranitar's usage in the previous generation. Its base 61 Speed is not too impressive at first glance, but if you maximize it and slap on when maximized and boosted with a Choice Scarf, Tyranitar can outspeed the base 115 Speed tier—notably maximum Speed Azelf and Starmie at maximum speed—as well as slower Pokemon who could otherwise trouble many teams—notably , such as / particularly Gengar and Latias. In fact, the ability to counter Latias was one of the main reasons Choice Scarf Tyranitar became so common.

To start, you'll need the maximum Speed of the Pokemon you're building considering. Our analysis pages have this maximum Speed. With this information, you can use refer to the following tables to see for Speed numbers of other Pokemon with different EV and nature investments. Determine which threats you wish your Pokemon to outpseed, and distribute EVs accordingly. Note that you need to keep in mind the Speed IV of the Pokemon, although a factor that is most relevant for certain Hidden Power types.<period> and Pokemon with low Speed don't exactly get what you mean here. how about Pokemon who have weather-inducing abilities, who utilize moves such as Payback, as well as Pokemon on a Trick Room team, (in which case, you might be looking to lower the IV may also wish to run an imperfect Speed IV in order to be slower than a certain opponents).

For example, a very common threat this generation in BW OU is Conkeldurr. You might decide that you want A Reuniclus user might decide it wants Reuniclus to be slower than Conkeldurr, as the Fighting-type latter has a very scary powerful Payback. We can see from this table that neutral-natured, uninvested Conkeldurr, with a neutral nature and 0 Spe EVs, reaches a speed higher than that of Reuniclus with the same. But what if Conkeldurr has a Speed-reducing nature with a Spe IV of 0? We see that Conkeldurr's minimum Speed (in order to hit last with Payback as much as possible) is 85, while Reuniclus's Speed with a neutral nature and 0 Spe IVs is 96 with an IV of 31. By making Reuniclus's Nature reduce its Speed (such as with Relaxed), we lower its Speed to 86. By making its Spe IV 29, we lower Reuniclus's Speed to 84, which ensures that it will always hit second against Conkeldurr—this makes Payback base 50 power, which allows Reuniclus to beat Conkeldurr handily.

So we see how the Speed stat can be used to ensure the greatest best possible outcome for your Pokemon. This works similarly if you're trying to outspeed a certain Pokemon with a certain boost. For example, let's say you use Agility Lucario to deal with Venusaur in the sun. We can see that Venusaur reaches 518 Speed in bright intense sunlight. To top that with Lucario, we need only need to invest give it 176 Spe EVs with and a Speed-neutral nature (granted, this assumes you can use Agility to boost Lucario's Speed before Venusaur comes into the field of play).

The asterisks indicate two important notes: if a Pokemon has a * by its name, it often carries a Hidden Power—typically Fire, Fighting, Psychic, or Rock—that requires it to lower its Speed IV by one 1. If you decide to use this Hidden Power, you will need to account for that accordingly. If a Pokemon has ** by its name, that means that it lowers its IV by 1, but a two-stage boost means that its final Speed will be two lower than the given value.

Okay, seriously those are the only things I saw that needed fixing. Gorgeous work, as always Telamonian.

Give me a highlight on irc when you implement the final gp check because I have a script to html these in a few seconds somewhere

[*]no Dragonite runs neutral 220 or 216; 196 EVs hits 245 and 212 hits 249

[*]standard Gorebyss and Huntail run 232 Spe, not 236 for 198 Spe, 396 at +2
These arent necessarily true...innocent criminal grouped close ev spreads, so if a bunch of pokes run 220 spe, it could show up in the data as, say, 212

Thats part of the reason i want to look over the raw data to get exact spreads...
