[SET COMMENTS]
Palpitoad is an excellent physical wall that finds plenty of opportunities to set Stealth Rock against the Pokemon that it checks such as Manectric, Stonjourner, and Basculin. Palpitoad’s Electric immunity also is invaluable in a metagame that lacks reliable stops to Volt Switch from Manectric and Pikachu. Earth Power is favored over Earthquake to deal greater damage to Stonjourner, Mawile, and Pawniard. Use Toxic to cripple switch-ins including Mr. Rime, Gourgeist, and Shiinotic. Protect is an option over Toxic to scout certain attacks from Choice item users including Grass Knot from Choice Specs Raichu and Freeze-Dry from Choice Specs Mr. Rime to determine the best counterplay, as well as Trick from Pokemon like Galarian Mr. Mime, because Palpitoad relies on its Eviolite to perform optimally. However, Protect makes Palpitoad more passive than Toxic, because it becomes setup fodder for common switch-ins such as Nasty Plot Gourgeist. Maximum investment in HP and Defense with a Bold nature lets Palpitoad take physical attacks from foes like Stonjourner, Pikachu, Basculin, and Crustle as well as possible.
Palpitoad is valuable for teams that need a way to deal with Electric-types and stop Pokemon like Manectric and Pikachu from creating momentum through Volt Switch. Roselia and Shiinotic appreciate being paired with Palpitoad because it can pivot into Fire-type moves like Heat Crash from Stonjourner and Flare Blitz from Raboot. In return, Roselia can check Grass-types like Ludicolo and Bellossom while also completing an entry hazard stacking core by setting Spikes or Toxic Spikes. Roselia can also function as a special wall, thus forming a strong defensive backbone with Palpitoad. Drakloak pairs well with Palpitoad, as it can check both Nasty Plot Gourgeist and Silvally-Grass with Shadow Ball and Fire Blast. Since Palpitoad is unable to reliably deal with Grass Knot + Nasty Plot Raichu, pairing it with a secondary Electric answer like Manectric is optimal. Choice Scarf Manectric can also offensively check Nasty Plot Gourgeist and Swords Dance Falinks, which would otherwise use Palpitoad as setup fodder. Pair Palpitoad with Mr. Rime, Klang, and Lapras to deal with its 4x weakness to Freeze-Dry from Glaceon and opposing Mr. Rime. In return, Klang appreciates Palpitoad checking Raboot and Manectric. Palpitoad appreciates effective hazard removers like Silvally-Grass because its lack of recovery means that it can be easily overwhelmed by the chip damage, which limits its ability to perform as an effective wall. Wallbreakers weak to priority including Mr. Rime appreciate Palpitoad’s ability to check priority users including Pikachu with Extreme Speed, Basculin with Aqua Jet, and Pawniard with Sucker Punch. Finally, Palpitoad is vulnerable to strong special wallbreakers like Beheeyem, Mr. Mime, and Glaceon and appreciates special walls like Type: Null to form a strong defensive backbone.
