As I stated in the title of this post, ANYONE, and I mean ANYONE who posts their first team is inevitable going to post a team that is completely and totally worthless. Either because they haven't really gripped the basics of the competitive game yet, or they're the sort of person that likes pokemon, but isn't cut out for competitive because they're only going to use their favorites, and Pikachu isn't worth a flying **** in competitive. You can tell who these guys are, because they've got only one post under their belt and have a stupid name that either has a four digit number at the end, like 'pokefan7869' or some sort of stupid misspelling, like 'kewldood'.
Well, I've only got one post under my belt, and my name is a stupid misspelling.
I've been playing competitive a bit, and lurking these boards, and I figure that it's time for me to post my stupid idiotic team that will almost certainly be torn to shreds by anyone who reads this forum and has an ounce of common sense. I've actually held off on making this thread for a while now, and hopefully played enough competitive to where my team won't be total ****, but we'll see about that. I'm still pretty new, and while I have a little experience under my belt, it still may not be enough to distinguish me from the three hundred other blathering idiots who post their stupid first teams and want them rated.
Anyway, here's The TEAM:
Metagross @ Occa Berry
Trait: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Stealth Rock
- Bullet Punch
- Earthquake
- Meteor Mash
Metagross is my lead. He's fairly sturdy, which is good, since I gravitate towards Pokémon who can take a few hits. But he's also weak against fire types moves. And Ground types moves. This puts him at a bit of a disadvantage, as those seem to crop up a lot. He's got an Occa berry to help compensate the fire weakness, but sometimes it seems like its not enough. On the other hand though, he can sweep decently, and if I know my opponent is going to pull out a fire or a ground type move, I can pull out one of my the four Pokémon on my team who are partially/completely resistant to those types.
Usually, this guy can take out one guy, sometimes two before he goes down. Bullet Punch is really good for that. But he goes down a lot. Maybe it's because I'm a giant n00b, maybe it's because there are better leads out there. If there's something better than this one for this slot/role, let me know.
Breloom (F) @ Focus Sash
Trait: Technician
EVs: 12 HP / 252 Atk / 244 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Spore
- Mach Punch
- Bullet Seed
- Stone Edge
Okay, so I like Breloom pretty well. It's a little frail for my tastes, but Spore is good, and things like Bullet Seed and Mach Punch are really good with Technician. But that's just the thing, though. Technician. I only found out after I built this team that Dream World Shroomish/Breloom hadn't been released yet. And I want to play real OU, not Dream World. So I either need a replacement for this spot, or a good move set that will work as a physical sweeper in a similar vein without the Technician. Or if something else entirely would work better than Breloom, let me know what that is too.
Gengar (F) @ Life Orb
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 255 SAtk / 255 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Focus Blast
- Shadow Ball
- Haze
- Thunderbolt
Gengar is a good Pokémon. I like Gengar, mostly because I like to beat the crap out of the opponent's Mons in one hit whenever possible. Before I was running Substitute and Pain Split instead of Haze and Thunderbolt, but I only just recently swapped that out, in light of the fact that when using Substitute/Pain Split I would still get attacked after I used Pain Split, which meant that I would often die, since Gengar is sort of frail. Maybe I'm being dumb and just not using Pain Split right, and I should switch back. Tell me what you think! (That's sort of the point, isn't it?)
(EDIT: Now that I think about it, Haze might be a sort of a dumb move to put on a Gengar, but I needed Haze somewhere on this team, and I wasn't sure where to put it.)
Jellicent (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Cursed Body
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Hardy Nature
- Recover
- Will-O-Wisp
- Scald
- Ice Beam
Jellicent. Good old Jellicent. I love walls, especially since one of the first Pokémon I ever EV train in-game was an Umbreon, who are as wall-y as all get out. And Jellicent captures exactly what I loved about my old Umbreon, which is that it can just sit there and take hits all day long. And then it can heal, and take even more hits. I wind up using this mon a whole lot of the time, since it's Ghost typing makes it easy to switch into. I've not got too much to say about it, mostly because I love it so much and have no complaints.
Hydreigon (M) @ Expert Belt
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 64 HP / 252 SAtk / 192 Spd
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- U-turn
- Dragon Pulse
- Flamethrower
- Surf
Really it's Hydregion, along with Jellicent, that forms the core of this team. With his brilliant resistances and typing, Hydregion is probably my new favorite Pokémon. He's bulky, which I appreciate in a sweeper, and he has a freakin' awesome movepool. Dragon Pulse/Flamethrower/Surf hits lots of types for supereffective, and U-turn is also good, since I can deal just that one extra little bit of damage that might help me win the fight as I switch out. He's great to switch out of, since so many people try to hit him with fighting types, and then I switch into a ghost.
I'm considering Draco-meteor for the Dragon Type move. I'm unsure about it because I really don't like the fall in Special Attack that comes with it. I like it though, because with STAB, it has a base power of 210. Again, I'm unsure what to do, and so I'm looking for someone to tell me what to do.
Gliscor (M) @ Toxic Orb
Trait: Poison Heal
EVs: 252 HP / 184 Def / 72 Spd
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Earthquake
- Toxic
- Aerial Ace
- Protect
And finally, to round it out with a physical wall, we get Gliscor. First off, to get another couple resistances out there, because I love resistances, can't get enough of them. Second because he's a pretty damn good wall, that can actually dish damage fairly well too. My complaint with this guy though is his lack of instant recovery, which is the big reason I didn't pick Ferrothorn. He does all right most of the time, but there are usually times where I wish he could last just one or two more turns while I'm stalling someone, and he dies prematurely. So this guy could definitely be better.
Summary:
So, like I said at the beginning, this is my first team, and therefore likely to be a ****fest. Hopefully it's not too bad, but really, don't be afraid to tear holes in it if it needs it, replacing half of the whole team with Pokémon who do what the Pokémon in my team do, but better. The only Pokémon I would mind doing away with are Jellicent and Hydregion, 'cause I'm pretty happy right now with how they are preforming. But other than that, feel free to suggest whatever radical changes you think would work.
Threats:
As I said before, I'm a giant n00b to the whole competitive thing. I can't identify specific threats, but I do know that I loose a lot to Pokémon that spend a lot of time doing set up. I've got no answer to those guys, especially if they can boost their speed up really high before they make their move. That's why I put Haze on Gengar, which imay not be the best idea in retrospect, since I was already complaining about it having a low HP, and this isn't an attack move. If anyone could come up with a Pokémon that would fill one of these guy's roles and can use Haze effective, please let me know.
