No, "they" don't. Please don't junior-mod.

I prefer Substitute over Avalanche on Curse Mamoswine. With plenty of common weaknesses and poor Sp Def, it doesn't matter how many times you Curse up - a Pokemon like Infernape and Starmie can simply come in for the revenge kill. Substitute prevents this, and with that massive base HP, his Subs are very difficult to budge, moreso after Cursing.

In using Steel Wing over Brave Bird on on Skarmory, you have lost your only Gyarados counter. There's a strong chance of "6-0'd if Gyara gets a DD" going on here. The best way to avoid this would be to fit HP Electric on Vaporeon, probably over Wish. Alternatively, drop Steel Wing for Brave Bird and insert some Attack EVs.
 
How is brave bird skarm a gyara counter? IIRC waterfall is a 2HKO after 2 DDs, which gyara has pleny of time to get when skarm is in. I'm assuming this is the standard taunt bulky set.
 
Brave Bird can 3HKO Gyarados with EV investment, whereas a Dragon Danced Waterfall deals 29.94% - 35.03% to Skarmory. A +2 Waterfall does 39.52% - 46.41%. Gyara will most likely Taunt the first turn, allowing you to get a solid blow in for free. If he doesn't Taunt and launches straight into an attack, then you should be able to Whirlwind him on the next turn.

It is by no means a solid counter (in fact, it's a big risk when you factor in recoil and the 20% flinch rate), which is why I listed it as an alternative to the safer option, Vaporeon.
