Pokémon GO

Ok, so i've had a little bit of a play around -- its cool but i'm having a few issues setting up, random server error messages, etc... Bit shaky at the moment but I guess everyone is trying to get on atm.

I've started playing too!
Apparently, you can choose a starter, but you must learn how to use a pokeball to catch one .
Learning how to throw the Pokeball is actually not easy.

Well Kotaku has some images up, specifically of the micro transaction store. 20 Poke Balls apparently cost $1.50, so that's 7.5 cents per Poke Ball. Also the highest amount of coins you can get is 14,500 for $160. Geez, do they actually expect people to pay that much (that aren't little kids who are spending their parent's money without their permission)?

Pokemon GO is not targeted towards children at all.
The price is reasonable compared to other Japanese mobile phone games.
Yes, people would actually pay that much.

Super salty I can't play right now... App says gps not found, so I suspect even if you have the app, you won't be able to play it yet.....

You'd be surprised.
Look at just about any microtransaction game and they'll have some of the same high prices for lots of -insert currency/item in the game here-. It's a bit ridiculous, but it'll work because let's players and reviewers and stuff at the very least. I mean hell, at that point it makes sense; if I had money to burn I'd probably spend at least a bit of it on Pokémon Picross...

Wrong
Changing VPN works fine, as you can see I can play from Hong Kong.

Looks like people here don:'t know much about mobile games.

Honestly I've only been paying half attention to Pokemon GO for quite a while now. They overhyped the games during launch and made it more than they implied it to be (such as the dull battling system and meh graphics) and over time my interest has only gone down. Now though it's so low that I'm probably not going to even get the free version. 25 candies to evolve your pokemon (i.e. 25 catches)!!! No thanks that would make the game incredibly boring real fast (especially as I have no intention to pay as you play). I don't even care about the possible connections with SM anymore (which is said to Eventually happen), because really between XY, ORAS and SM you can get everything you need making possible GO transfers not very valuable. So what's left, some weird gym system that sounds far too much effort to be worth my time maintaining and draining my battery life. I think I'm going to pass on this one.

I've got the game. I can confirm that every time you catch a Pokemon, you get 3 candies. You can also "release Pokemon" to get extra candy. When you have 8 of the same Pokemon, it's not a big deal to release your weakest one to get that 25th candy.

Also not every Pokemon needs 25 candies to evolve. Caterpie and Weedle only need 12, but others like Zubat, Clefairy, Venonat and Paras need 50. Bulbasaur, Eevee and both Nidoran forms need 25.

On a separate note, is anyone else struggling to catch Pokemon? I'm running into quite a few Zubat and I'm finding them difficult to catch when their bodies are small and they're moving around the screen quickly.

Can confirm. Total noob.
Doesn't Niantic watch for stuff like this?
So, what just download something like vyprvpn apk and change locations?
I'm from Nepal, so I'm worried that I'll get the app to work but won't have anything to do with the game....

It's funny that they assume people from outside of Australia would wait patiently.
Now their server's down because pretty much every Chinese are playing it , lol.

But really, they should have done better.

I didn't manually change my VPN. I downloaded an app called Qoo App (Chinese only though), which deals with foreign IP and VPN, so that Chinese people can play Japan exclusive games.

But I think I can find you a download link after I go home.

I already have the app. It's just that just as i start the game, even before I sign up, I get a red message saying that Gps signal was not found, even though, location is on with high accuracy...
So, here I am left scratching my head, wondering what I'm doing wrong. Will download some gps tool apps to see how strong the signal is around here.
Could you(or anyone) post how much data the app uses in a given time? I do have shitty WiFi at home but I'll pretty much have to play the app on data of I get it to work, so I'm wondering if it's a black hole when it comes to data usage...

EDIT: Around an hour ago, they officially locked all IPs that are not Australian.
So, they are serious-- we can't play now.

That's not true at all, i can play in Italy with the downloaded apk and the game is even localized in my language and there is a lot of pokestops already. I downloaded the app a minute ago to be safe i guess but it works perfectly (bar maybe trainer interactions that didnt work at all with my IRL friends)

The only bug i have found was with Pokedex formatting but it fixed itself

pokestops are already set since they are the same used for Ingress. They just are pokestops instead of Ingress towers

well, I'm in Richmond, VA, I got the APK this morning and went for a walk but you need to be level 5 to get in a gym battle (whatever that's going to be), now is noon, and all three gyms have pokemon already sitting on top so I guess there's quite a few trainers in the area.

Apparently the game drains battery real fast.
I took a walk in a real busy area, with a lot of pokestops (a few per block sometimes), meaning I kept my screen and gps on for most of an hour, it drained about 20% on a Galaxy S6. Around my home there isn't nearly as many pokestops, so I can just walk with the screen off and just open the application when I know I'm near the stop or when it vibrates because there's a pokemon nearby, so your mileage will change depending on the density of the stops.

Had this game for about 5 minutes and it's already driving me insane. Took out 5% of my battery already, and just messing around with the controls I chose Bulbasaur as my starter when I wanted Charmander (I love all 3 starters, but just wanted to go for Charizard this time, I've never had him as a starter). As far as I can see I can't really start the game over, deleting didn't do anything. Maybe there is a menu inside to do that, haven't fiddled around with it much yet. Probably will do some more later.

Still, I recommend everyone get it as soon as you can just so that you can grab your preferred nickname before it is taken. I suspect there are going to be a lot of downloads coming real soon.

Been fooling around a bit... however with my parents as strict about electronics as they are, my phone's data locked. And this game needs a constant internet connection to function. sigh...

Although there's a gym really close to me, and nobody's claimed it because where i'm from, the few gamers here are the 12 year old COD players, and as such i'm probably the only person in my whole neighborhood who even has the game, which is... something.

Does the game still run the GPS and drain the battery when the app isn't in use or running in the background?

Before the app released in the US I believe 99% of Pokemon names were already taken and most viable first names were as well. Unless you have a unique online handle or random shit, you're gonna have to stick with that.

Which brings me to my first impressions of the game:

1) Names

If your account is already tied to a unique e-mail, why can't you pick any username? You can't exactly interact with players directly (for now) so it seems really pointless. I'd rather be able to identify with a first name or a favorite character over being PokemonTrainer64 because the other 63 were taken.

2) Wild Pokemon

I think the Pokemon look beautiful. They use the XY / ORAS models but look sleeker. Size of the Pokemon is also taken into account and that helps with the immersion.

The environment tying in with what Pokemon appear is really cool. I found a Staryu close to a fountain, a Fearow on top of a car, and a Magikarp near a sewer dish.

The catching system is straightforward and simple. A bit annoying when the mon escapes a few of your Poke Balls but that's the challenge.

I think the spawn rate for Pokemon could be increased. It's pretty low as is and walking for quite a while can often yield nothing. The locations of some Pokemon are also pretty ludicrous. Wild Pokemon should not be appearing in sectioned-off backyards or weird intersections.

3) Battling / Gyms / Poke Spots

Have not done a single thing.

Overall the immersion and the aesthetics work. Catching system is simple and the wild Pokemon system could be improved some.

Does the game still run the GPS and drain the battery when the app isn't in use or running in the background?

"Yes". The game isn't "active" when you aren't using it so you will be wasting battery because it's in the background.
