For next week we will be featuring the frozen king of Unova: Kyurem with its deadly new toy: The Never-Melt Ice.

kyurem.gif

Kyurem @ Never-Melt Ice
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Freeze-Dry
- Earth Power
- Ice Beam
- Roost

Kyurem is a fearsome breaker who capitalizes on his excellent Ice Ground coverage and his more than decent bulk to threaten a lot of teams. Having now access to Freeze Dry as a new Ice STAB, Kyurem can threaten most bulky Water types which were problematic for him during the last generation. If the two most common sets in SS OU were the Choice Specs one and the annoying SubRoost one, a new set emerged combining both the breaking power and the longevity: Never-Melt Ice Kyurem. Never-Melt Ice boosts Kyurem’s Ice STABs, allowing you to bait a Choice Specs set and fire a surprise Earth Power on an incoming Steel types while being way harder to switch-into in general. Ice Beam is your main STAB and most damaging move while Freeze Dry helps against bulky Water types like Tapu Fini and Toxapex. Earth Power is the best coverage option, hitting Ice resistances like most Steel types and Fire types. Lastly, Roost is a decent recovery option to heal back entry hazards damage and take advantage of Kyurem’s decent bulk to take some hits and heal the damage back. Who do you think are the best partners to make this Kyurem set shine?

Submission phase will end on next Friday, good luck!

melmetal

:ss/melmetal:
Melmetal @ Assault Vest
Ability: Iron Fist
EVs: 128 HP / 116 Atk / 252 SpD / 12 Spe
Careful Nature
- Double Iron Bash
- Earthquake
- Ice Punch

- Thunder Punch

Melmetal and Kyurem make up fro a great couple, as Melmetal can check what Kyurem dislikes and pressures it, such as Tapu Lele, Tapu Koko, Dragapult, and opposing Kyurem. So Kyurem can run free and wild on the battlefield. In return, Kyurem can help against Landorus-T, Hippowdon, and other Pokemon such as bulky waters like Toxapex. In combination they are a driving force and can relieve pressure from each other and Melmetal + Kyurem is a great core to use at the moment because they can easily break down and check common cores and Pokemon in the metagame. Melmetal and Kyurem also overload Corviknight and pressure it easily. Moreover, Melmetal helps Kyurem with Weavile and with Earthquake + Ice Punch and Kyurems Ice-type STAB moves they are capable of overloading and overwhelming Ferrothorn in the process. In overall, that core is really strong and with teammates like Landorus-T, Tapu Lele, and Tapu Koko they can easily break through alot of common Pokemon in the metagame.

Tornadus-T
tornadus and kyurem can support each other in different ways, thanks to the former's versatility.

:bw/tornadus-therian:

UTILITY DEFOG
Tornadus-Therian (M) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 244 HP / 96 Def / 168 Spe
Timid Nature
- Defog
- Hurricane
- Knock Off
- U-turn

this set acts as a support to kyurem via hazard control + item removal on common switchins like many steel types (like av melmetal), slowking-g, spd clef and blissey + u-turn for easy switchins. furthermore, tornadus provides defensive counterplay to many troublesome offensive checks to kyurem, like urshifu and kartana.

NASTY PLOT
Tornadus-Therian (M) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 84 HP / 252 SpA / 172 Spe or 244 HP / 92 SpA / 172 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Nasty Plot
- Hurricane
- Heat Wave

- Taunt / Knock Off

NASTY PLOT TORNADUS-T.
This set acts more as a kyurem offensive partner than support. as stated before, the two share similar checks and counters, like assault vest users in melmetal and slowking, spdef walls like blissey or clefable or annoying resists like heatran.
with nasty plot making tornadus-t a threat and kyurem potentially luring heatran out of the game, these two combine well offensively. taunt shuts down attempt to haze, status and/or recovery from bulkier walls, while knock off provides early game utility vs shared checks but also dedicated tornadus-t counters like zapdos and rotom-w (which kyurem devours btw). tornadus-t's speed allows it to still check urshifu and kartana even with a more offensively oriented spread.

___

having posted two sets for the same Pokémon, I wanted to showcase the extent of tornadus-t's ability to play well alongside kyurem. as for voting stuff, I don't mind being forced to pick one if I have to. in that case, it would be nasty plot because defog is boring and obvious. I think it would be interesting to count each set as a different entry and see what people prefer.

Corviknight @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 168 Def / 88 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Body Press
- U-turn
- Defog

- Roost

Corviknight is a great partner for Never-Melt Ice Kyurem as it clears hazards with Defog and can provide a slow U-turn to bring it in on threats such as Heatran. Kyurem also appreciates Corviknight checking Steel-types such as Melmetal.

:ss/Heatran:

Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 HP / 232 SpD / 24 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Magma Storm
- Earth Power
- Taunt
- Stealth Rock

Heatran is a great partner to Kyurem, being nigh unwallable when paired together. Heatran chips/eliminates Kyurem checks like Blissey, SpDef Clefable, Scizor, AV Melmetal, while Kyurem pressures Heatran checks like Dragonite, Bulky Ground and Water Types. Further, Heatran sets up Stealth Rock that helps Kyurem wallbreak more easily.

I just made a post about it in the discussion thread, so I might as well add it as a submission here.

:Sm/Aegislash:
Aegislash @ Leftovers
Level: 100
Calm Nature
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpD / 4 SpA
- Shadow Ball
- Substitute
- Toxic
- King's Shield

absolutely doesn’t care about any tapu, pult does 68.5 max, and you do a ton of damage back. Plus, aegi invites in stuff like lando (I guess, I mean what other kinda stuff can switch into Aegislash lol), which could be a nice opportunity for kyurem to come out to play.

specs would be an equally possible alternative, trading lots of switch-in opportunities for becoming destroyer of worlds

Aegislash @ Choice Specs
Level: 100
Modest Nature
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
- Shadow Ball
- Close Combat
- Shadow Sneak
- Flash Cannon

basically, the only mon in the tier not 2hko’d is AV melmetal… which is 3hko’d

For next week you will have to find a good partner for one of the newest popular special wall: Assault Vest Tornadus-T.

tornadus-therian.gif

Tornadus-Therian @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 248 HP / 92 SpD / 168 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- Heat Wave
- Knock Off
- U-turn

In a metagame where good special walls are rare and beasts like Dragapult, Tapu Lele or Blacephalon are top threats, Tornadus-T found a new set, trading its beloved Heavy-Duty Boots for an Assault Vest and thus the ability to check these special threats with a relative ease while still being able to deal with some annoying physical breakers like Kartana. This set capitalizes on Tornadus-T great Bulk but also on its access to both Regenerator and U-turn, allowing it to serve as a bulky pivot who can switch in against special breakers and threaten them with its great Speed tier or U-turn out to keep the momentum. Knock Off is a good utility move and threaten common Choice Specs users like Dragapult and Tapu Lele (by removing their Choice Specs). Heat Wave annihilates Kartana with a decent accuracy and can annoy Corviknight. Lasty, Hurricane is Tornadus-T’s main STAB, and even though it’s a bit unreliable it remains a strong move able to deal decent damage even with a fully defensive Tornadus-T. However, using an Assault Vest means that you will be extremely easy to chip down when Rocks are up to negate most of your Regenerator recovery, and thus you will definitively need great teammates to help it fulfilling its role. Who would you use with this Assault Vest Tornadus-T set?

Submission phase will end on next Friday, good luck!

zeraora

:zeraora:
Zeraora @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Plasma Fists
- Volt Switch
- Knock Off
- Close Combat

Zeraora is a great partner to Tornadus-T, as they can forme a VoltTurn core and Zeraora can check problematic Electric-types like Magnezone and Tapu Koko and can break through Steel-types with Close Combat, such include Heatran, Melmetal, and the aforementioned Magnezone. It can also spam a Knock Off core with Tornadus-T, as spamming Knock Off is greatly appreciated.

In return, Tornadus-T can check Pokemon such as Rillaboom, Tapu Bulu, and Kartana for it, which can be problematic for Zeraora. It can also help vs Dragapult and it can get in Zeraora safely.

Both are a good couple as they benefit from each other.

Ferrothorn makes a great partner as it resists all that torn may struggle with while providing hazard support and torn can pivot causing ferro to come out and seed and eat hits for it.

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 104 Def / 152 SpD
Careful Nature
- Leech Seed
- Knock Off
- Body Press
- Spikes

:tapu Lele:
:SM/Tapu Lele:
Tapu Lele @ Choice Specs

Ability: Psychic Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid / Modest Nature

IVs: 0 Atk
- Psychic / Psyshock

- Moonblast
- Thunderbolt

- Shadow Ball / Psyshock

TCG colours here

Tapu Lele is a phenomenal partner to AV Tornadus-T as it takes advantage of its reliability in chipping steel types and Tyranitar, as well as removing items (especially important against Heatran, Slowking-G and AV Melmetal if you can catch it) and generating momentum for itself with U-turn. AV Tornadus-T also comes in with the ability to check a wide variety of faster demons that give Tapu Lele nightmares, such as Dragapult, Kartana, Urshifu and Blacephalon.
Scarf Tapu Lele can also work well, as I do have a team I made 1-2 month ago that happened to feature both AV Tornadus-T and Scarf Lele, but Specs Lele fits with Tornadus-T's kit a lot better overall.
As for the set, you have the obligatory STAB attacks with Thunderbolt for coverage and midgrounds (i.e. Corvi+Pex). I like having both Psyshock and Psychic on the Specs set, but Shadow Ball can be valuable against bulky Psychic types and - most of all - Shedinja stall, which get torn to shreds with a single prediction.

agslash23 didn’t had the time to fill the Slowbro submission but, as we don’t have many submissions, I’m gonna write a short explanation and count it for the vote:

slowbro.gif

Slowbro @ Colbur Berry
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Slack Off
- Body Press
- Teleport
- Future Sight

Slowbro form an interesting Regecore with Tornadus-T as both can pivot out with U-turn and Teleport. Using Colbur Berry and Body Press allow Slowbro to lure Weavile and OHKO it while taking even a +2 Knock Off. This greatly help Tornadus-T as Weavile is one of its biggest threats. In return Assault Vest Tornadus-T can come in on special breakers like Dragapult who threaten Slowbro.

With that saying, submission period is now closed, so let’s move on to the voting phase for :assault vest: :tornadus-therian:. Here are the submissions we have:

:heavy duty boots: :zeraora: by Katy

:leftovers: :ferrothorn: by xr1aces

:choice specs: :tapu lele: by SLDR

:colbur berry: :slowbro: by agslash23 (written by me)

Vote for who you think are the two best Assault Vest Tornadus Therian’s partners (you can’t vote for your own submission). Voting Phase ends on Sunday.
