Pokémon Unite

Hey everyone
With the big changes coming to Unite soon, how would people feel about a Lets Play in this forum for Unite? I could even add a challenge, eg supporter only/nuzlocke mode, etc. Wanted to do a Lets Play and Unite is honestly the game I play most these days. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks all!

So this thread isn't that active, but the latest Unite news is that it is shutting down microtransactions and eventually the whole game in Belgium and the Netherlands which is pretty interesting to see it being warranted only now. People suppose this is due to certain recent events being more overt with the lootbox elements.

Thank you to everyone for your continued support of Pokémon UNITE.

Unfortunately, we have made the difficult decision to end service for Pokémon UNITE in Belgium and the Netherlands from November 30, 2025.

As of November 30, 2025, service for Pokémon UNITE will end in Belgium and the Netherlands. The app will no longer be available to download on mobile devices or Nintendo Switch beyond that date. In-game items, including Aeos Gems and Subscriptions, will no longer be available for purchase from October 31, 2024. Please ensure to use all in-game items before November 30, 2025.

Players may reach out to Support for any issues before November 30, 2025.

We’d like to thank our players in Belgium and Netherlands for their support, and we apologise for any inconvenience.

I haven't been following Unite for a while, aside from seeing people complain on the official Pokemon forums about how you can automatically report anyone for voice chat bans, but for context spragels' video gives a pretty good summary of how weird such events have been handled that even whales can't really benefit from it.

I'm not really sure how to tl;dr it because I am not a microtransaction/gacha veteran, but in the worst case, you play a match to get a chest and might get a grade 1 chest that you need to upgrade 3 times (50 gems each upgrade) to get to grade 4 for guaranteed coupons/a 0.02% chance of dropping the skin, spend 144 gems to open it early, and you get 3 coupons guaranteed and you need 300 coupons to buy out the Sylveon skin guaranteed. In practice there's a chance you get some extra coupons but he mentions some estimates that you probably might spend at least $100 in practice still.

In more practical terms this guide from a whale personally spent $150 and they still had to actually grind out 52 games to actually get the thing instead of being able to pay outright.

There is also another event happening at the same time that is also for trainer cosmetics that you barely see ingame, and similarly progresses based on how many gems you spend during this time as another incentive of how much they expect you to spend on Sylveon as spragels points out with 8640 being the cost just to unlock 60 rank 4 chests.

Overall it seems like a really comical jump from the days of the $40 Ninetales skin.

thats crazy bc i remember actually thinking it was insane that was $40

tbh unite is a game that i feel peaked close to release and while the content has increased it doesnt feel like the quality of the game is much better

in some ways its buggier and feels more mtx heavy

i wouldnt be surprised if this game isnt really as profitable as people think and tencent is desperate

btw i already see apologists in the reddit thread but like no, a lot of modern games arent "banking on whales"

they bank on like 20% of invested players going "hm $5 isn't that much money, i play this game a lot and it'd make my experience a bit better"

and then adding reasons to do this like 5+ times every year.

the time of whales is over outside of basically just some gachas. a good mtx strategy IS making cheaper stuff and getting people to overspend over a long period of time, not by grabbing a super low % of people with big payments.

i guarantee that unite is making not that much money because they're only banking on whales. they alienated people like me long ago with $20 skins being the minimum for shit i actually wanted. we're not spending a cent

The way they just discontinue this game for a few countries like it's nothing scares me. I am very invested in some of the online games I play, and of course I know they will end eventually. But for me to know some companies might just blatantly end it right here because of their gacha greed frightens me. Definitely makes me think.

Eh, I don’t think you can really “blame” Unite for ending support in those countries. It is a decision by the courts of Belgium and The Netherlands, it’s not something Unite has much control over.

I agree with ant’s post above about why Unite’s monetisation model isn’t the greatest. I actually have spent a bit of money on Unite over the past few years, mainly to grab a new character or two after I haven’t played the game for a while (e.g. at uni the Wi-Fi was too bad on my Switch to play so after a term time, or back when skins were affordable when the game launched). But Unite has the monetisation model it has, and it is ultimately reasonable to neither globally change the model over two small countries nor give those countries different monetisation because that would create an uneven play experience too.

The law from Belgium and The Netherlands isn’t really aiming to make game developers get rid of gacha mechanics. It’s quite firmly to just rid the country of those games, so the law is having its intended effect.

Every other mobile Nintendo game should be impacted by this too, like Mario Kart Tour or even Animal Crossing Pocket (though the latter is actually changing to a lump sum single purchase soon). Outside of Nintendo, loads of console games are / should be impacted by the law too. It’s not really fair to single out Pokémon Unite.

The main reason to criticise Unite’s gacha is that it’s poorly designed and not worth the money investment, perhaps even more blatantly than in most games. But of course being poorly designed and not worth the money investment is a feature of all gacha, not a bug.

for me the breaking point was that the one time I decided to cough up for a $20 skin, that was the one time they decided to be generous

i bought one of the $20 sylveon skins bc favorite mon besides espeon. next month it was one of the like three skins they gave away for free in the anniversary

so i'll get some compensation for a new skin for $20, right? right?

no lol have 400 tickets to add to your 30k dumbass lmao!!!!!

i decided to give in and spend a decent amount of money and i still got burned lmao

tbf i know that isnt a threat for like 95% of skins. in fact from there on, they've gotten more and more stingy by the quarter; but it still burned me and i dont forgive the game for it frankly

The law is indeed having its intended effect. I agree with what you're saying, however they had a choice here. The mechanic that was recently implemented was not there from the start. By implementing this specific gacha mechanic, they knew they would exclude essentially the playerbase in two whole countries. They could have at least chosen to implement it differently so the game would not be discontinued in these countries. But I guess money is what drives them, and not their players.

Minor correction, Niantic is in charge of Pokemon Go, but Unite is developed by TiMi Group, a subsidary of Tencent. To my knowledge, Niantic has no involvement in Unite (Go is there bag to fumble, and boy can they).

I'm sorry lol, I was active in a Pokemon GO thread just before I posted this and got things mixed up. Either way my point still stands. They knew they would exclude essentially the playerbase in two whole countries. They could have at least chosen to implement it differently so the game would not be discontinued in these countries.

heya! I'm here to give my theory on the next pokemon in the Roster! I got tinkaton right, which proves two things to me. almost the entire Roster is Fan-favorites! So here's whos the next ones for me,and if you haven't played, go play it now and come back later! (might give you a potential moveset)

A Hoenn/any region Starter mudkip maybe?
I think Mudkip can be a potential character. I mean we have a fire chicken and adding Mudkip/swampert would be nice. this isnt a long one I want but its possible since people like it.

Arcanine?

ok hear me out... Arcanine is a perfect candidate! apparently people like the guy(according to google leave your comment if its bad Im not reading it >:3 jk) Arcanine can be a speedster or an attacker! his move set can start with growl or tackle. with the second option being flamethrower or something Like Lava plume, and for final he can get Extreme Speed or Flare Blitz or overheat. Now for his unite move... it can be him charging up fire, kinda like Burn up where is channels all its fire into a strong fire move! its basically BreakNeck Blitz+fire. and Maybe it can be added when the year of the dog is here. since its based off a lion/dog it can have holowear wearing a traditional chinese or Hanfu (漢服) But this is all just a guess.

Flygon(we all love him and prob knew he was gonna make it here):

So everyone loves flygon! who doesn't? don't say twitter since they love arguing. but flygon can be a character in Unite. as it can be a Speedster or All Rounder, Ok here's what I think, if they want to give him evos they make him All rounder since making trapinch a speedster doesn't feel right, BUT if its just flygon hes full Speedster! I cant give him a moveset But his unite move can be a sandstorm that does chip damage. so I think he would be perfect.

Lugia...
ok im just putting lugia here is because Oh-ho is in the game and as I stated in a post put in them exclusives pokemon in their respective games, while oh ho is a defender Lugia can be speedster.

Piplup.

Ok Piplup is My guess. I dont know why but I have a feeling hes gonna get added. I dont know why.

Tinkaton:

so your prob asking. Wait Iris you dummie didnt tinkaton get announced to be added in? yes she did but im here to guess their moveset(READ: this is NOT spoilers all guesses. READ NOT SPOILERS) well tink is gonna be a 3 stage evo.. duh and with the final move gigaton hammer cause signature move But I'm guessing unite move early and gonna say her unite move is gonna be like "Hammer Whirl" or something where tink spins around and does damage to the opponent.. BUT if not it can be a defense move like immune to damage or something when it spins.

Actually (insert nerd emoji), Tinkaton was datamined alongside Galarian Rapidash as the next addition to the roster on the 17th of october trough text files, and the two of them went live on the public test server four days later.

Pokemon Unite has of course seen a lot of fan favorites included over its lifetime but it also has had a tendency for including some seemingly random stuff from the current gen like Cramorant or Greedent. Considering that some of the Gen 8 newcomers were apparently postponed and released later in the development cycle (Falinks comes to mind) even though Gen 9 was already rolling, Rapidash being added could just be another case of this stuff happening (or maybe I'm reaching a bit too far for an explanation).

It's also funny how close you got for the moveset prediction, as she does spin her hammer for her boosted auto-attack and gets Gigaton Hammer in her second set of moves (duh, just like in the main game) ! Unfortunately, her Unite move is actually her blowing quote on quote "Cute kisses at her opponents" to stun them, quickly followed by a more classic beeg hammer slam.
