Welcome to Smogon! Take a moment to read the Introduction to Smogon for a run-down on everything Smogon, and make sure you take some time to read the global rules.
Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure the scaling is like, -10% for each overlevel and +10% for each underlevel compared to the mon you're facing.
Having run the scaled formula before yeah that's right-ish, depends a lot on the pokemon and levels involved but for good ol' Combee beating up a level 9 Pachirisu for the rest of its days, accurate.
Modern Exp. Share by itself is not bad. When you need to grind, especially post-game, it's amazing. Same as IoA's Exp. Charm.
But then they decided it shouldn't have an off button.
The EXP Charm not being able to be turned off is somehow more baffling than EXP Share. Like by this point the Share isnt even an item any more, but the Charm is explicitly a machine!
And one you can't turn down.
I was very glad it wasn't in BDSP
If anything, my one gripe with Gen 6/7 Exp. Share is that it replaced the Gen 2-5 Exp. Share which was actually important when you needed to have one mon catch up.
The ideal for Maximum Appeal imo is rename Exp share to EXP All, let you turn it on/off (they can, of course, leave it on by default if you wish, just make it an option again) and have the old exp share return as a standalone held item. And hell make the EXP Charm a thing you can turn on/off too and I'm fine with that being thrown at you.
Not like those formulas and item graphcis arent going to be kicking around until the end of time with everything else.
I mean at the end of the day this conversation wouldn't matter if it was just an optoin like it used to be. It would accommodate everyone's play styles without stepping on anyone's toes
Yeah agreed completely. Having common sense player friendly options that are obvious to most companies don't apply to the Pokémon franchise apparently.
The easy way to control the exp is using the pc like it was the party menu, and you can access to it from there by pressing R, is not that different from just choosing a new lead every other battle.
Just box the party members you wont need for the next battle, most npc only run 1 or 2 mons so you dont need a full party most of the time.

And then you run into some random fool with a Pachirisu while only having a Buizel and get wiped because you dumped the rest into a box to curb Exp. Share and can't access them in-battle.
It feels really inconsistent, some people are getting it around veilstone (& if they spent long enough putzing around, around gardenia) without following Pokemon but other people just...aren't getting them at all?
- The Slates are bought with Shards you find in the underground. They are used up whether you catch the Legendary or not
- The Slates are unlocked in a particular order, with you needing to catch previous Legendaries first. The Regis are the first ones
- Items appear in some rooms after completion. Soul Room has the Soul Dew while the Weather Trio gives berries
- Pure Space and Strange Space are seemingly areas for catching the legendaries
- The legendaries will have their HAs if they have one
I'm only just now realising that while not a new move, Marill got Splash added back to its level-up moveset! This'll make it so much easier for players to get a competitive Azumarill ready with its best moves
You laugh now, but wait until Gen 9 when they reveal they're bringing back Z-Moves. Normalium Z Huge Power Azumarill w/ Splash, Aqua Jet, Play Rough, Ice Punch/Knock Off!
Well there was fumbling but it's not ILCA's fault that GF gave them the ball, pointed them a direction, and resulted them scoring a goal for the opposing team.
Some Ideas (that don't involve making an entire new B (and possible C) Team):
Do a Nuzlocke (yes, I know, obvious suggestion)
No healing/using items (EXTREME: You're only allowed to use the Pokemon Center when you beat a Gym Leader)
Try not using STAB moves (EXTREME: Try not using Type Advantage).
Do what the NPC does and always send out your weakest Pokemon, even if they have a Type disadvantage.
Leave fate up to dice rolls (using a six-sided die, when battling roll the dice. 1 through 4 correspond with a Move, 5 means you switch to another Pokemon (roll the dice again to decide who), and a 6 you use an item to heal your Pokemon).
It definitey looks nice although they probably should have touched up the battle textures a little more. Some pokemon you see their eyes and they're much mroe obviously pixelated than, say, SWSH.
One playthrough I watch pointed out how the hair on their head is textured but their eyebrows and other facial animations are essentially drawings, and now I can't unsee it. They sort of look like LEGO figures of popular characters where they use a molded hair piece but the face is just printed onto the head piece.
What's the alternative? Cause I can give you plenty of alternative ideas how to do the Exp. Share that keeps it a helpful balancing tool but doesn't have the risk of completely ripping the game in half.

Make your Pokemon hate your guts. That pretty much means:
Knock them out.
Give them Energy Powder, Heal Powder, Energy Root, and Revive Herb.
BTW, finally found an exciting video of something we (who aren't playing the game) have been waiting for: Hearthome Gym!
WELL TOO BAD! Get out your calculator cause you're doing math problems to ride elevators.
And remember to battle all the trainers behind the wrong doors, especially the one with a Drifloon because otherwise you'd have to catch one on Friday at the Windworks to complete your dex asap to access post game content.
So here's what the Foreign Building is like:
I have a feeling that mural is going to take on a whole new meaning when Legends: Arceus comes out.
I think I said something about getting this game if glitching out of bounds was possible again for being that faithful. I was joking, but I'd probably put my money where my mouth is if it weren't for the forced affection. Any other problem, sure, I'd buy it, but forcing Easy Mode on me? No.
I want to want this game. This game is making me angry because it looks so good but it also has so many problems! The underground only giving 1 more Fire type for Diamond instead of everything Platinum has, the fact that 1.0 cartridges with worse music and infinity respawning Heatran were actually sent to stores, not replacing TM 06 with something else instead of limiting Toxic to Pokemon that already got it from other ways, and which Pokemon gains affection and how is uncomprehendable! I want to like it because I lost my Gen 4 games a long time ago, because it looks like it's hard enough to destroy me, and because it's Pokemon.
I'd be able to enjoy it if it was good or laugh at it if it was bad, but so much of both makes my hate it because there's so many awesome things in a game that's bad enough to not get!
We don't have confirmation, but from datamining it appears there's (incomplete) certificates for bringing a Gen 4 Pokemon into BDSP in v 1.1, so unless plans change by the time the home update hits it seems very plausible.
Shame to hear about these glitches, but none of them appear to softlock you and all of them seem fairly specific that would be hard to do on accident. I'm certain they'll be patched out soon, but it's definitely a sign of the rushed production process and schedule that this would happen

I mean...I do believe this was definitely a game that had production issues (1.0, hello) I'm just gonna say that some of these glitches are probably things that could have very easily been in a "non rushed" production.
There's all kinds of weird ass glitches out there, even in more ""complete"" games, and I suspect these are so specific that even if they were found they wouldn't be prioritized.
Just finished the main game last night and did gym leader rematches this morning. I'm sure this has been covered already, but here are some thoughts from a huge DPPt (well, Pt) fan:
I hadn't really planned my team out but I knew I wanted to try and avoid any kind of SRing for good stats, both to save myself some hassle and because with the newer exp system I figured I wouldn't need to worry about that. Hoo boy was I right not to bother lmao. Older Pokemon games trained me to fight every trainer on every route so I could backtrack without interruption later, but in BD I was dodging practically anyone who wasn't only temporarily available (e.g. Galactic Grunts, Gym Trainers) in a misguided attempt to stay under the curve. Catch exp is the big killer, especially since almost everything in the Grand Underground is a couple of levels higher than your team for almost the entire game and there's lots of cool stuff down there that you want to nab.
The level curve issues are especially disappointing when you can see that the Gym Leaders have these new and interesting sets and items but they barely last long enough in battle to show any of them off. It's like "Oh, Barry's Staraptor has a Focus Sash? And it's using Sunny Day? Wish I got to see where that strategy was going."
It's funny because when I played Diamond in 2007 at age 10 I remember filling out my entire team pre-Roark and ending up facing the Elite Four with a team in the high 40s, so I guess the new system is more accessible for dumb kids (not that that's necessarily what you want).
Anyway, I knew I was picking Piplup and that I wanted to get a Honchkrow (since Murkrow/Misdreavus are unavailable in Plat) and that was basically it. I briefly got excited about potentially getting a Rotom-H until I remembered that you couldn't catch Rotom before postgame in DP, which was the first major 'ugh' moment for me. I liked being able to fill out my team with expanded-Dex mons from the Underground, although the way I see it the benefits of the Platinum expanded Dex were 60% the extra team options for me and 40% the extra team options for other trainers to use, so it wasn't a perfect fix.
Misc stuff:
Not being able to avoid affection bonuses sucked.
I think the problems with slavishly following DP instead of Plat are best exemplified by Barry's stupid level 26 Starly
The Game Corner TMs being available in the Dept Store so cheaply is neat, but it creates an even more absurd gulf in accessibility between them and the Battle tower TMs
Barry's Munchlax having Bite instead of spamming Stockpile/Swallow makes the Mars/Jupiter double so much less of a slog
Cynthia is pretty wild, even when the exp system brings your levels in line with hers
Gym rematch teams are fun and they show some of the most interesting AI I've seen in a Pokemon game so far (although still far from perfect)
The Trainers' School Abra knowing Charge Beam instead of Hidden power felt like a personal attack against my Piplup and then the Eterna Forest Abra had Energy Ball!!!!
Tbh all the Hidden Power replacements were a little weird, but it was a fun game identifying which move was the replacement for stuff like Gastrodon and Mothim
Piplup learning Water Gun at 6 then and getting Charm and Swagger made it feel like it was gonna have a fully revamped movepool until I realised that they'd just deleted Bubble, Water Sport, and Bide lol
Ok just did the Buck and Marley sections and Marley retains her title as the most useless partner. Her Arcanine's only attacking move is Burn Up, so it can literally only attack once. Did it really need both Howl and Leer??

Well maybe they just used the last moves Arcanine learns... oh, huh, nevermind, I guess they made it suck on purpose (at the very least give it Flame Wheel or Flare Blitz instead of Burn Up so it can take advantage of Howl's & Leer's effects... if it ever attacks...).

Correct, the only overworld pokemon are in the underground
It makes sense, the routes are barely able to handle diagonal movement (I can barely ride the bike because "sliding" along the wall will kill your momentum), there just isnt enough room on the maps to properly handle overworld encounters on a bunch of these.
