Pokemon of the Week Project

Shuckle has the strongest move in the game after a power trick it has base 230 attack then use defense curl + rollout. Just saying.
PS charizard is beast

touché, good sir, but Byrn specified Fire Blast, which is beat out by two different other moves in the game.
Just said that it had the strongest move ingame, didn't specifically state that that move was Fire Blast, though I can see where the mistake would be made. Not that it makes any difference though, a 2HKO on the best special wall in the game is a 2HKO.

Now that you guys have used him a bit, what teammates are you finding effective? Personally I like Donphan, as he can remove SR and set it up himself as well as take rock hits for Zard. The water and electric weakness can easily be taken care of with grass types like Venu.

Oh, and of you have a good rank, noes the time to post it since we're wrapping up.

I only saw one other person on the ladder who was actually using charizard. Well, there was that one guy using bellyzard, but I won't count that.

Wobbufett is an excellent partner for Charles, as he gets rid of scarfers that will come in afterwards to ruin your day. Solar power Zard...DOES NOT NEED NINETALES AS A PARTNER. You know how kingdra runs rain Dance on non weather teams to assist his sweeping? Charizard can do the same thing with sunny day. This is great for catching a Tyranitar or a politoed on the switch because, unlike sunny day ninetales, charizard can actually ko those Pokemon all by himself if no matter the build.

Seeing as how I always play sun, I was running a ninetales to support charizard anyway, while my charles was holding charcoal as an item and had a movement of sunny day, fire blast, solar beam, and focus blast.

Partners include rapid spinners and sr setters. Having sr down will allow you to take out dragonite with fire blast as well as some other bulky waters like tentacruel and such. Any spinner who isn't easily spin blocked and can handle one of chair's weaknesses is a fine choice. Hitmontop and donphan resists rock, while tentacruel resists water. The magic bouncers are alright too since you absolutely cannot allow rocks to hit the field when using this pokemon.

Against slower teams. Charley works alongside dual screen espeon a la heavy offense. Setting up sunny day with him behind screens is much easier than it sounds.

Zoroark

Its time for a new POTW. This time we're doing one that can be discussed much more. (in retrospect Charizard was a bad pick) This week we're doing Zoroark. Zoroark is a very interesting Pokemon due to its ability, Illusion. Illusion disguises Zoroark as the Pokemon in the back of your party, making for an endless amounts of mind games and tricks. He is also blessed with a diverse movepool, with things like Nasty Plot, Swords Dance, Sucker Punch, and Uturn just to name a few. To top it off, Zoroark also has good attacking stats and speed. Unfortunatly for the tricky fox, he has terrible defenses, meaning he can easily be killed by a good stab move or SE priority. His mono dark typing doesn't help him there either, making it difficult to switch in. Zoroark requires near perfect prediction to use, but when used in the right hands he can change the outcome of a battle.*

So, what sets have you found effective? What partners are you using? What mind games are you using? Are there any gimmicks you have found effective?

On another note, I need someone to put in the hall of fame for the POTW 1, so please post your rank if you participated.*

I've had success with Zoroark on a physical hyper offensive team. I had a bunch of sweepers that were stopped by Gliscor / Skarmory and used a mixed Zoroark with Sucker Punch / HP Ice / Flamethrower / Grass Knot (for Hippowdon and bulky waters). Sucker Punch let me revenge various sweepers or fast attackers like Latios or Starmie while the other 3 moves provide coverage against their physically defensive 'mon of choice. It helps to have more than one 'mon that Zoroark can hide as because you never no when you need something to check a threat or stop an opponent from setting up so you can't rely on just one. It also helps because you can tailor the illusion to the 'mon that you know will generate the most beneficial reaction in your opponent. Using Zoroark as a lead really defeats the purpose cause you really only have one chance to make a big impact with Zoroark and you never know what they're going to lead with.

Well I needed something new to get me back into the meta and this is as good as anything. Besides, I like the idea and am disappointed it slowed down so much last week.

POTW: Zoroark

I think a good plan for Zoroark is to use it alongside a threatening fighting type like Conkeldurr in order to nab a free boost when the opponent tries to hit it with a psychic type move or switch in a psychic type counter. Conkeldurr is the kind of Pokemon where if you let it set up your team is screwed, so your opponent will feel compelled to get their psychic type in quickly and deal with it before it's too late. Then BAM you either NP/SD on the switch/attack or go in for the kill to set up a sweep for your actual Conkeldurr. The idea here isn't so much to keep the illusion up for a long time so much as to trigger a single key misplay. Either you get a free set up turn and sweep or you eliminate a key counter. Of course, timing is key with this ploy, and a rapid spinner is a must so that SR doesn't reveal your hand too early.

Infernape

Let's get this thing going to again! This week we're doing an underused OU Pokemon, Infernape. Infernape is a great offensive threat, as it has great attack stats and speed. It also has great dual stabs and a diverse movepool. Because of this, Infernape will usually be a mixed wall breaker. However, it does have access to SD and NP, so it can be a devistating set up sweeper as well. The only thing letting Infernape down are his terrible defences, meaning he can easily be revenge killed.*

So, how are you using him? What sets are effective? What's countering him and how are you stopping his counters? How are you abusing his wall-breaking power?

Let's begin!

In order to breath some life into this thing, I think we should hold polls for who the next week's Pokemon should be.

I agree. Perhaps with a defensive Pokemon we can use a different type of team. It would be nice to mix this up for once. All Pokemon as POTW are frail sweepers.

Thanks for reminding me, I forgot to mention this:

If you have an idea for a POTW, VM it to me and I'll probably do it.

I'll do a defensive one next week. Now back to Infernape.

im just wondering if we could extend the timeframe we look at a pokemon for?

This thread reminds me of the "project pokemon" threads back in Stark where people basically did what this thread is about. Could we try extending this for a week per pokemon (so 2 weeks total) and see if that sparks more discussion?

Yeah at the moment this is pretty unorganized. We've had very little discussion on the POTWs, and I think that it would be a good idea if we could vote as a community to choose the POTW, instead of you picking them all.

Aright, I'll try that voting thing. That's actually a pretty good idea. From now on, starting Friday I'll open up a pole for the next POTW.

As for extending the timeframe, I'm a bit reluctant to do that, as having a new mon every week I'm hoping will spark more activity. If we get to the point where a week isn't enough I may do that, but for now I think a week is good.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

May we nominate Pokemon to be voted?? I want to nominate Lapras and Flygon xP

I also agree with ginganinja that 2 weeks is honestly a more reasonable amount of time for people to discuss about a Pokemon without losing too much interest.

We're going to do the voting thing, do I need some nominations for next week. I want to do a defensive oriented Pokemon. On Friday I'll pick 3 and we'll vote!

My 2 favorite pokemons! I might actually make a good team and try to play competitively if one of those two gets a good discussion, it will be inspiring..I hope.

Alright, time to vote! The nominees are Lapras and Slowbro. (sorry, Flygon is more offensive) So, just vote on which you want to be the next POTW, and on Sunday I'll start it.
