PSP/Vita

as much as i love metagame, i also love playing psp and can't wait to get my own vita. i want to know from the smogon community which are their top 3 games in psp and what do you think about ps vita.

my top games are:
1. monster hunter freedom series: spent 1,500+ hours on this series (about 3 games) and man, this is addictive. one of the hardcore games out which requires pure skill.
2. persona 3: a remake of ps2 great which brought me back to high school days with some adventuring.
3. god of war: the reason i bought psp. the game looks amazing on handheld and some hints/tweaks from the main series of ps2/3.

Thanks!

Eh, I dunno, I have a feeling the Vita is going to be priced too much out of my comfort zone, only got my PSP a while back because it was one of the bundled deals for $200 back then.

But eh, some decent looking things for it I guess.

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite and Portable 3rd is really the only reason I'd actually buy a PSP, which is something I'm currently saving money for. I don't see myself buying a Vita anytime soon(just like I don't see myself buying a 3DS anytime soon). Though I'm pretty sure I can also try out other games. When I had the fat PSP I had Lego Star Wars and it was fun as hell. I also bought some of the Naruto games, they were fun too, but the best one to me was GTA.....then my psp got lost in my dad's old Audi car that he had a lease on and he had to return it. godfuckingdammit

Probably not going to buy a Vita, unless its price drops significantly. The price seemed great at first, but it's full of hidden costs, like the proprietary memory cards costing an exorbitant amount, even without games factored in. Add in Australian inflation and the 3G Vita is going to be $450 ($350 for wi-fi only, which was the 3DS pre-price drop), even without the memory cards and games.

I want one simply because my PSP has bitten the dust and I need to play my Patapon.

but this is one console I probably won't buy on release simply for two reasons.
1. it is being released during UK exam season. yaoming.jpg
2. the 3G version will cost £290, plus £20 for a 1-year, 1GB/month data contract. I'm lucky somewhat as I don't have to buy memory cards separately, but even so, I need to wait for them to slash the price.

Alternatively if they reveal Patapon 4 to come out within 1 week of PSV launch, I will gladly give up university.

Probably not going to buy this. I was always a nintendo fanboy and 3ds could probably satisfy me. I had a PSP, and I didn't like it too much besides the RPGs.

If they come out with some really cool games and the price is okay when I have spare money, I may change my mind.

As someone who works at PlayStation, I have no problem admitting that I was not a PSP fan. I only played through 2 games that I can think of, and the handheld was just not worth it for me.

However, since I work at PlayStation, I've had a lot of time to play the Vita, and I gotta say, it's easily my favorite handheld of all time. The launch lineup is the best I have ever heard of, both for handhelds and consoles alike. There are at least 5 games right out of launch that I want to play through and through, which is going to make it really hard to play it all :( . It's like the exact opposite of the 3DS launch (I want my damn $80 bucks back still btw...).

Anyways, if you guys want to try it out yourself before making a purchase decision, you can do so at the Vita Mall Tour or the Vita Hill Social Club (more locations coming soon).

PSP was a bust for me too. I bought it a few years back and played maybe less than 5 games on it? MGS Portable Ops, Star Ocean 1 and 2, Tales of Eternia... I think that might be it. So really just one game that wasn't a port. Hell, I actually lost my charger I think x.x

I was interested in Vita and even pre-ordered Uncharted but then Sony decided to be complete jackasses about the memory format. I was hoping for SD or at the very least Memory Stick Pro Duo. This new format costs too much for a system that's supposed to support a robust digital distribution platform. I'll probably wait it out until prices drop.

I'm probably not gonna get the Vita (I haven't even gotten a 3DS yet). The PSP was great, but I mainly used it for emulating old games, played through Kingdom Hearts, then sold it off for profit. I bought it on craigslist for 60 and sold it off to a friend for 120. B)

i'm pretty pleased with my psp. bought it at launch and bought the slim a few years ago. got a couple hundred hours out of tales of the world: radiant mythology, and i'm still a little raw over its sequels' lack of localization.

loved the star ocean remakes, loved tales of eternia, loved crisis core. nothing else really springs to mind but i'd say i got my money's worth. probably not going to buy a vita, though.

I didn't use my PSP at all either, but that was sorta my fault as well, that and I greatly preferred the DS's library. When I find it I'm going to use it to emulate old games. If what Philip says is true and the PSV has a more interesting library (for my tastes) then I'll probably end up picking one up. I was looking at this as a release buy though but I can't now I've seen the Australian prices and the Japanese memory card prices... oh yeah and the battery life, which looks to be as abysmal as the 3DS's (okay I'll be honest, I just play at home anyways, but I do take them out with me and I hate being glued to the power socket) Maybe I should just wait for the inevitable new model, which hopefully will improve on the battery life, since I expect it will be the source of many complaints.

Yeah, the games released would be better suited for the PS3 anyways. No need to waste my money on something like this when I have a phone...

How big is the Vita compared to a PSP? Even the slim was a bit annoying to keep in my pocket.

The PSP didn't really satisfy my gaming needs like the DS though I did use it to play some RPGs and the incredible Monster Hunter series.. I'm interested what does the Vita's launch lineup look like?

wow..i'm getting excited to get my vita.

It's slightly bigger than the slim PSP. Definitely not something to put in your pocket, but what handheld gaming device is these days? It's more compact than the 3DS by a large margin. The size allows for a brilliant screen though. It's seriously such a nice screen that you just have to check it out for yourself! Go to one of the demo locations I posted earlier :)

Like this :)

Edit: For the record, launch titles I'm buying:

Escape Plan
UNCHARTED: Golden Abyss
ModNation Racers: Road Trip
Little Deviants
Gravity Rush
Reality Fighters (Really fun, check out the demo)

Also @shiki: The proprietary memory really blows, but the pricing isn't as bad as initially anticipated. I'm lucky though, I won't have to spend a dime on any of it!!! :3

The more views/replies, the more pay? Lol

I'm excited for this for sure, but I'm gonna wait when the library expands after release. Man, it'll be powerful as hell from what I was reading about a while ago.

I never owned a PSP but I did play on a friends from time to time. As most have said, the library was seemingly incredibly disappointing and from Sony, I always expect their handheld games to be too much of a scaled down console version. It never feels like this with Nintendo even when we get games like Mario Kart for both home and handheld, but I guess Pokémon shadows this the most due to how amazing it is. Monster Hunter was near enough the only reason to get a PSP in my opinion. That may be a little narrow minded, but that's just how it felt to me.

As for the Vita, although it's an amazing piece of kit for sure, I think the pricing (and hidden costs on top of that) will hurt it perhaps even more-so than the 3DS was hurt and although price-cuts have possibly come to be the norm, I can't see Sony having the balls to cut it as early as Nintendo did (not that it was a fair move by any stretch of the imagination, just a necessary one).

£280 for the 3G Console.
£45~ for a 16gb Memory Card (Europe isn't getting 32gb which would be £80~).
£20 a year 3G if you go that route (according to Zy, I've not looked into this).
£45 for first-party games?

So, basically a release PS Vita in the UK will cost you about £400 if you want all the top kit and the best game, but probably still over £300 even if you sacrifice a few of the better things. I can't see it doing enough to convince people until it has time to get an even better library together like the 3DS and probably drop in price a fair amount. Personally, I think they're going to have to have the Wi-Fi version down to £199.99 in England if they want to tempt a wider audience.

>Blazblue: Continuum Shift EXTEND
>Dynasty Warriors Next
>Touch My Katamari
>Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3
>Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention

yeah i'm getting one thanks philip

The original PSP had potential, and some top tier games ended up being released (the dissidia games, corpse party, persona remake) but i found it was in a tough spot. As a gaming device, it wasn't as good as the DS, and as a multimedia device it couldn't compare to superior multimedia devices like the Iphone.

From what i've seen, the Vita intends to fix this by being a top tier multimedia device AND have a solid assortment of games. Only time will tell.

PS: Phil has the best job ever, i'm so jealous :(

ME TOO

btw, the best reason i love psp is that my friends also got it.. imagine playing 2k12 with them is so much fun (even though the graphics are crappy) and sometimes we play syphon filter up to 8 players (it's like playing counterstrike anywhere lol). but the best one is hunting mons in Monster Hunter with your friends... something that i think DS or even home consoles can't provide.

RULE NO. 1 ON PSP/VITA: BUY ONE, CONVINCE YOUR FRIENDS TO ALSO BUY ONE, AND YOU'LL HAVE THE BEST GAMING OF YOUR LIFE.

Playing Monster Hunter with my friends was one of the best fun I ever had with a gaming console, I still remember playing Monster Hunter in french class with my friends haha, good times good times. Monster Hunter is alredy a great game alone but with your friends, it's simply amazing!
