Congratulations to Oathkeepre for winning the first week of this new version of PU Matchmaking with his great Jellicent submission! Seems like people really enjoyed the offensive power of these two wallbreakers together. Also, congratulations to PhantomHurious, Gum, uhuhuhu7 and jonago for having an insane tie for runner up!

Thank you so much to everyone who voted as well. If anything, the ties between these users only go to show how great these submissions were!

Oathkeepre - 2
PhantomHurious -1
Gum - 1
uhuhuhu7 - 1
jonago - 1

Week 2:

For this week the PUers will be pairing a mon with the blue blob with the red shoes, Tangela! Proven to be an amazing physical wall that can function as a great pivot and counter/check to many physical wallbreakers in the tier, including Stoutland, Primeape, etc, Tangela can be hard to deal with thanks to its ability Regenerator, Eviolite and its array of utility moves, but is this newcomer able to find love in the PU tier?

Voting phase starts on Thurdsay!

Regirock @ Leftovers
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 180 Def / 76 SpD
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Rock Slide
- Drain Punch
- Protect

Tangela @ Eviolite
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Giga Drain
- Hidden Power Fire
- Knock Off
- Leech Seed

Regirock patches up Tangela's very few physical weaknesses by absorbing Poison and Flying type attacks, walling the likes of Dodrio and Skuntank. In return, Tangela is able to handle Fighting and Ground types like Gurdurr and Mudsdale.
Drain Punch is probably Regirock's best coverage move and is especially notable here as it allows Regirock to better handle Guzzlord and Ice types like Aurorus and Sandslash Alola, which Tangela has trouble with.

Through Regenerator, Leech Seed, and Stealth Rock the core of Regirock and Tangela is able to outlive pretty much every physical threat in the tier

bloodline (Lanturn) @ Leftovers
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 40 HP / 220 Def / 248 SpD
Calm Nature
- Volt Switch
- Scald
- Toxic
- Heal Bell

So Lanturn checks special stuff like non Z-Grass Simi (unset anyway with guzz in the tier), Mesprit, and Froslass, which all greatly threaten Tangela. It can also cure Tangela from any status condition thanks to Heal Bell. In exchange, Tangela acts as a switchin to stuff like Stoutland, Kangaskhan, and even stuff like Aggron. With a secondary Fighting check and a Lilli answer, such as Oricorio-Pom-Pom, this core covers most of the meta without also being extremely passive due to Tangela's respectable SpA and Lanturn's access to Volt Switch. Solid core if u ask me.

Type: Null @ Eviolite
Ability: Battle Armor
EVs: 252 HP / 8 Def / 248 SpD
Careful Nature
- U-turn
- Return
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

null's fat ass does a good job of taking special hits for tangela. it also pivots well with it due to u-turn, while tangela utilizes regen. and of course, one of the main reasons why you should go with null is that it can absorb knock-offs and status (bc rest) for tangela in addition to the usual defensive synergy stuff.

Lycanroc @ Lycanium Z
Ability: Steadfast
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stone Edge
- Drill Run
- Accelerock
- Swords Dance

While Tangela maybe one of the nicest defensive pivots in the meta, it can't do everything on its own. A strong breaker is a perfect partner for it and Lycanroc fits that job. Being able to outspeed and take down the Ices, Flyings, Fires, etc that Tangela can't is just too good to pass up. These two just have great offensive synergy too.

Qwilfish @ Icium Z
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 248 HP / 164 Def / 96 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Haze
- Toxic Spikes
- Spikes
- Scald
Alongside Tangela, this unorthodox Qwilfish set walls pretty much every Physical Attacker on the Tier, making this core perfect for bulkier teams that focus more on indirect damage. This speed is enough to surpass Jolly Sandslash-Alola outside of Hail, giving Qwilfish an opportunity to burn it. Icium Z+Haze is a choice that allows Qwilfish to have an increased longevity (with the additional bonus of Leech Seed sometimes coming in handy too). In general, this core isn't really fit for teams that are more focused on offense, but fits nicely on teams that can make use of the added Spikes damage.

Sandslash-Alola @ Leftovers
Ability: Slush Rush
EVs: 252 HP / 208 SpD / 48 Spe
Careful Nature
- Rapid Spin
- Protect
- Iron Head
- Earthquake

Spdef tank+Physdef wall, can't go wrong with that. Tangela's stellar defense with an eviolite allow it to eat hits from mons like Stoutland and Primeape, both of which are huge problems for Alolaslash as it finds itself getting revenge killed by these mons fairly commonly, the likes of which are unable to do as much damage to Tangela as expected for a Defense stat of its caliber. Tangela finds itself losing to simple stuff like Aurorus and offensive Lass which Alolaslash is able to beat easily with Iron Head. As well as this, Alolaslash is able to spin away any hazards that could potentially stop Tangela from switching in as much as it would like to. Protect here is to gain the most out of Leech Seed. Using Protect will not only heal Sandslash more, it will slowly chip the opposing mon putting it in range for Iron Head or Earthquake. This core should typically be seen in a more defensive kind of build such as balance and should be paired with appropriate fire resists such as Lanturn or Jellicent.

Clefairy @ Eviolite
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpD / 4 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Stealth Rock
- Calm Mind
- Moonblast
- Soft-Boiled

Clefairy works nicely with Tangela capable of tanking a lot of special hits that it can't handle as effectively, while being a solid answer to the premier fighting types in the tier. It can also act as a Toxic status absorber thanks to Magic Guard, which Tangela doesn't appreciate. Dragon types like Drampa and Guzzlord can come in pretty freely vs Tangela and Clefairy is capable of punishing this.

Audino @ Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Wish
- Protect
- Knock Off
- Heal Bell

Audio+Tangela forms a highly obnoxious Regenerator core that can last almost forever without the correct wallbreaker or stallbreaker(or both). Audino can persistently wall a large portion of the tier's special attackers while Tangela takes on almost any physical attacker that can threaten Audino. Audino can even remove status from Tangela with Heal Bell as well as cripple opposing Pokemon with Knock Off. Keep in mind this core works best in bulkier playstyles: it's kind of a momentum suck otherwise.

Voting phase

The effort put in these posts is stunning. Thank you all so much for putting in this much work, these are great! (:

Without further ado I’ll put the thread in the voting phase so the PUers can decide which of these partners they find fit to compliment Tangela. Some focused on the defensive synergy that Tang and its partner can provide, others in the utility factor that Tangela provides with partners equally fit for supporting it, and others also focused on pairing it with a strong wallbreaker that’s able to function alongside it in a potential endgame. With these many options, which one will be the best for complementing the blue blob?

So many great submissions! Voting phase ends on Sunday! Thank you all for participating and good luck!

UPDATE: You can vote for two submissions this week!
