Quagsire @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- Scald
- Recover
- Toxic

Alolachu likes something that can handle both Skuntank and Ground types. Even though the Alolachu set I had in mind was Nasty Plot Grass Knot, something to better take on those threats is still nice. Quag is easily able to switch into some of the stronger Earthquakes in the tier and fish for Scald burns. While taking hardly any damage from Skuntank. This pair could be weak against Alolan Eggy but the Raichu set also was Psychium Z (one of the best sets imo) so it can beat it in theory.

Swanna @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Keen Eye
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Hurricane
- Brave Bird
- Scald
- Defog

Swanna works as a partner for Alolachu to take out the Ground types and mons faster than it since with the Scarf, Swanna's speed reaches 486. Some of Alolachu's threats being Mudsdale, Lilligant, Lycanroc, Dugtrio-A, Primeape, and Ludicolo. Swanna can deal with these mons. Swanna can come in on Lilligant's 1st QD and then outspeed + OHKO w/Brave Bird, same for Ludicolo. Unless Mudsdale is running Rock Slide, Swanna beats it. Swanna practically OHKOs Lycanroc as well as outspeed it with it being at 355. Swanna easily outspeeds Primeape too and easily OHKOs with a BB or Cane. What more of a partner could Alolachu ask for?

Abomasnow @ Life Orb/Grassium Z

Ability: Snow Warning

EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe

Jolly/Hasty Nature

- Ice Shard

- Seed Bomb/Wood Hammer

-Earthquake/Blizzard

- Swords Dance

Abomasnow is a niche, yet powerful wallbreaker in the PU tier that can threaten a plethora of mons thanks to its great offensive typing, ability, priority moves and varied movepool. It supports Raichu-Alola by being able to check a lot of the ground mons that threaten the psychic mouse as well as having a priority move that lets it damage faster threats like Lilligant, Oricorio Pom Pom, Dodrio, Dugtrio-Alola as well as other wallbreakers like Exeggutor-Alola even under Trick Room.

Abomasnow can also be incredibly threatening because of its multiple sets and options for moves. The earlier set is one of the many that can threaten offensive teams, as well as being able to support Raichu in an effective way:

Seed Bomb or Wood Hammer allow Abomasnow to threaten mons like Mudsdale, Golurk, Quagsire and Gastrodon. Raichu-Alola would normally have no issue going against the last two and is able to KO both of them with a Grass Knot or two, but these mons can be troublesome if the user is utilizing Choice Specs Raichu-Alola and the mouse is not able to lock itself into the right move.
Ice Shard allows Abomasnow to threaten, along with the aforementioned ground types, most of the grass and flying mons in the tier, most notably Exeggutor-Alola, Lilligant and Oricorio.
The last option I chose was Earthquake since its able to threaten Skuntank, which can be an issue for Raichu-Alola depending on its set. Blizzard with a Hasty nature can also be utilized in this set but the player misses out on OHKOing Skuntank at +2.
252 Atk Life Orb Abomasnow Seed Bomb vs. 252 HP / 44 Def Mudsdale: 257-304 (63.6 - 75.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after hail damage and Leftovers recovery

252 Atk Life Orb Abomasnow Wood Hammer vs. 252 HP / 44 Def Mudsdale: 385-455 (95.2 - 112.6%) -- 75% chance to OHKO after hail damage and Leftovers recovery

252 Atk Life Orb Abomasnow Seed Bomb vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Golurk: 328-385 (102.5 - 120.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Life Orb Abomasnow Seed Bomb vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Quagsire: 437-515 (110.9 - 130.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Life Orb Abomasnow Seed Bomb vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Gastrodon: 733-863 (172.4 - 203%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Life Orb Abomasnow Ice Shard vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Oricorio-Pom-Pom: 179-213 (50.5 - 60.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after hail damage and Leftovers recovery

252 Atk Life Orb Abomasnow Earthquake vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Skuntank: 309-367 (88.7 - 105.4%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO after hail damage and Black Sludge recovery

252 Atk Life Orb Abomasnow Ice Shard vs. 212 HP / 0 Def Exeggutor-Alola: 312-374 (81.2 - 97.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after hail damage

4 SpA Life Orb Abomasnow Blizzard vs. 212 HP / 0 SpD Exeggutor-Alola: 733-863 (190.8 - 224.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Life Orb Abomasnow Ice Shard vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Lilligant: 172-203 (61.2 - 72.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after hail damage

252 Atk Life Orb Abomasnow Ice Shard vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Dodrio: 182-218 (69.7 - 83.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after hail damage

252 Atk Abomasnow Ice Shard vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Scyther: 126-150 (44.8 - 53.3%) -- 87.1% chance to 2HKO after hail damage

As these calcs show, Abomasnow is able to 2HKO or OHKO each one of the aforementioned threats with the right move and is able to OHKO all of them after a Swords Dance. Another aspect that must be considered is that Hail supports Raichu-Alola since it helps it beat a lot of the mons that is unable to OHKO without prior damage. Grassium-Z is a good option for a bigger nuke against threats that aren’t normally KO’d by Abomasnow without a boost in its attack.

The earlier Abomasnow set is unable to beat threats like Lycanroc or Dugtrio-Alola, which also bother Raichu-Alola, without the need of one of multiple SDs. For this reason, the scarfed set for Abomasnow must also be taken into consideration for its great speed tier and ability to OHKO common faster threats.

Abomasnow @ Choice Scarf

Ability: Snow Warning

EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

Naive Nature

- Blizzard

- Giga Drain

- Focus Blast

- Earthquake

This set trades the mobility and ability to boost the tree’s attack with the attributes of being faster than mons under 115 base speed. This lets Abomasnow outspeed and OHKO Lycanroc, Dugtrio-Alola, Lilligant, Exeggutor-Alola, Oricorio Pom-Pom and more by using the right move against them.
252 SpA Abomasnow Giga Drain vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Lycanroc: 276-326 (94.8 - 112%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO after hail damage

252 SpA Abomasnow Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Lycanroc: 294-346 (101 - 118.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

4 Atk Abomasnow Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Dugtrio-Alola: 204-242 (96.6 - 114.6%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO after hail damage and Leftovers recovery

252 SpA Abomasnow Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Dugtrio-Alola: 276-326 (130.8 - 154.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Abomasnow Blizzard vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Lilligant: 360-426 (128.1 - 151.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Abomasnow Blizzard vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Exeggutor-Alola: 712-844 (181.1 - 214.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Abomasnow Blizzard vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Oricorio-Pom-Pom: 380-450 (107.3 - 127.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Abomasnow Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Persian-Alola: 294-346 (88 - 103.5%) -- 25% chance to OHKO after hail damage

252 SpA Abomasnow Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Absol: 312-368 (115.1 - 135.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

As a conclusion: Abomasnow compliments Raichu-Alola by being able to spam a variety of moves and boost up its attack to threaten the opposing team’s answers to the mouse. Additionally, the different options for moves and items allow these two to be a powerful duo which can surprise any player and put them in a difficult position if a bad prediction has been made by them. Hazards and hail, as previously mentioned, support both since it helps the wallbreaking process. Abomasnow also takes advantage of the rise of Togedemaru to NU, which posed a huge threat to it before its rise.
Despite these attributes, Abomasnow can’t switch well into the flying types and poison types previously mentioned, but is able to do considerable amounts of damage to them if positioned right or after an SD. The scarfed set allows Aboma to be equally threatening to faster mons which would normally not be forced out or threatened by it.
Hazard control is necessary for letting Abomasnow break through the opposing team more efficiently, since its weakness to rocks (and Life Orb damage, if used) do threaten its longevity in the field. Healing Wish or Z-Parting Shot support by the likes of Mesprit and Persian-Alola respectively, give Abomasnow a second chance to break through a team which make these two valuable partners for this duo. Mesprit equally helps both of them by being a more reliable way of beating fighting types like Gurdurr and Hitmonchan. Water types are also ideal since they help cover for Abomasnow’s weakness to fire and rock. Qwilfish is one of these great options since the mon helps cover for said weakness and is able to set hazards.

The core of Raichu-Alola and Abomasnow is one that does an amazing job at chipping down, weakening and breaking through a team thanks to their great offensive presence and typing. They’re just a bit late for the holidays.

Thanks for reading.

► In my oppinion it's difficult to find a partner that fills the coverage Raichu is lacking. With Life-Orb/3-Attacks it basically threatens everything. With the absense of Togedemaru, Torterra and Palossand it doesn't need to switch up moves to hit everything. The only coverage it needs now is Grass Knot to hit Regirock, Quagsire, Gastrodon or Mudsdale.
► I chose Life Orb since it gets KOs with Grass Knot which it wouldn't have without it.

► So what really beats that reliably/counters it? Nothing really. You always have to consider it setting up.
► There are decent checks like Tangela, Type:Null or Alolan Dugtrio. Some less decent ones that pivot in but lose to it in return if it set up like Regirock, Sp. Def. Alola Sandslash or Mudsdale. The best way to beat it is checking it offensively and not letting it setup (with Skuntank, Knock Off Alolan-Persian, Alolan-Raticate, Kangaskhan etc.).
► So I thought about something that one: can irritate or beat the more decent checks and two: can switch in to the things that beat it offensively.

@ Eviolite / Guts

- Bulk Up

► Many have mentioned that one has to chip down Ground types in order for Raichu to put in work. However, I think that might be true for the specs set. For the setup Set however, it's more important to chip and maybe even get rid off important items (especially Choice Scarfs) of more offensive threats.
► Gurdurr does that perfectly. Beating strong priority users like Kangaskhan, Skuntank or Alolan-Dugtrio helps out Raichu a lot (I think calcs aren't necessary here haha).
► Also the better defensive checks (Tangela (Knocks after +2 Tbolt and pivots out to heal) and Type:Null (U-Turns and deals around 70)) are checked by Gurdurr. Type:Null is obvious. Tangela gets its Eviolite stolen which allows Raichu to KO it with a +2 Thunderbolt.

+2 252 SpA Life Orb Raichu-Alola Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Eviolite Tangela: 207-244 (61.9 - 73%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 252 SpA Life Orb Raichu-Alola Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Tangela: 309-365 (92.5 - 109.2%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO
0- Atk Tangela Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Raichu-Alola: 134-158 (51.3 - 60.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+2 252 SpA Life Orb Raichu-Alola Psyshock vs. 252 HP / 8 Def Eviolite Type: Null: 188-224 (47.7 - 56.8%) -- 89.1% chance to 2HKO
0 Atk Type: Null U-turn vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Raichu-Alola: 166-196 (63.6 - 75%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

► The only things left to check are the defensive checks that only beat Raichu without setup (like Spdef Sandslash, Mudsdale, Gastrodon, Regirock etc.). Yet again, Gurdurr has a decent shot against most of them. Maybe not hitting them with super effective damage but beating them in 1v1s (what Gurdurr basically does with half the metagame lol). Actually, it's not even important for Gurdurr to kill those threats. Only doing chip damage against Regirock or the fat Ground types puts them in range for Raichu without the need of setting up.

192+ Atk Gurdurr Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mudsdale: 69-82 (17 - 20.2%) -- possible 5HKO
252 SpA Life Orb Raichu-Alola Grass Knot (120 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Mudsdale: 315-372 (77.9 - 92%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
→ With Stealth Rock Max Def Mudsdale dies to the combination of those attacks.

For the most common switch in Mesprit however, it's not that easy:
252 SpA Life Orb Raichu-Alola Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Mesprit: 148-175 (40.6 - 48%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
Even with the Knock Off chip (~20%), it's not even close. That's the point where one could consider running Alolaraichium-Z. That, with 2 Stealth Rock switchins, is a knockout for sure.
252 SpA Raichu-Alola Gigavolt Havoc (175 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Mesprit: 220-261 (60.4 - 71.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

► On the flipside of things, Raichu helps out Gurdurr with some matchups as well. Beating many flying types (Oricorio-Sensu, Swanna, Articuno), Poison Types that can be irritating (Qwilfish, Roselia) or Jellicent.

► On paper that sounds great. But the are weaknesses I gotta mention too. The first big one being Eggy that lives a +2 Psyshock if it has a lot of HP EVs. Offensively, Scarf Scyther is troublesome for both of them.

+2 252 SpA Life Orb Raichu-Alola Psyshock vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Exeggutor-Alola: 313-370 (79.6 - 94.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
→ Draco and Leaf Storm obviously kill.

Pokémon-Icon_773_3DS.png
► For the rest of the team, I'd suggest maybe something like Silvally Fairy. It threatens Eggy and can switch into U-Turns from Scyther. But most importantly, with Parting Shot it synergizes with Alolan Raichu very well. In the end, one of Raichu's biggest problems is that it has a hard time setting up, so lowering the opposing attack stats is beneficial.

Damn that was a lot today. Thanks for reading guys! :]

Voting results

This week our Cupid is jonago with a grand total of 5 votes for his Gurdurr post. Our runner-up is SergioRules with 3 votes. Special shoutout to KellyKafka and Oathkeepre for their impressive submissions.

Week 5: Matchmaking

For this week, we are matching Oricorio-Pom-Pom! Pom-Pom has good defensive typing and decent bulk to check flying, fighting and grass type Pokemon including Gurdurr, Hitmonchan and Shiftry. This defensive typing coupled by the fact that it can be a wincon with Calm Mind and stop stall with Taunt means that Oricorio Pom-Pom is an excellent choice to have on your teams. This week we are going to make Pom-Pom happy and find the best match for it to fall in love with.

Good luck and may the best cupid win!

Gurdurr @ Eviolite
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 HP / 192 Atk / 64 Def
Adamant Nature
- Drain Punch
- Mach Punch
- Knock Off
- Bulk Up

Gurdurr makes for a wonderful partner for Pom Pom. Since this cheerleader has a hard time against Ice types and Rock types, Gurdurr can come in dispose of them for Pom Pom. Notable mons such as this are: Aggron, Lycanroc, Regirock, Alolaslash, and sometimes Froslass. Gurdurr's access to Guts and strong physical bulk allow it smash the former 4 and take out the latter with a Knock Off or two.

Skuntank

Skuntank @ Poisonium-z
Ability: Stench
EV's: 252 Attack 252 Speed 4 Defence
Nature: Jolly

- Poison jab
- Crunch
- Sucker punch
- Defog

Skuntank - The S rank powerhouse, Nothing fancy needed to give the proper support that Oricorio needs and that is centralised around Defog.
Skuntanks' a scintillating defogger that is no mystery its flexibility in EV spread is what makes it versatile going from Offensive to Defensive check. Its movepool is very useful in addition to Defog having access to Taunt,
Pursuit also gives a nice option to trap and get crucial damage onto those special walls.
Sucker punch provides great damage on things that outspeed both Oricorio & Skuntank alike (Manectric, Lycanroc) For example allowing you to better choose when to bring in your Pom - pom

Poisonium-z

This for me is vital for bringing down Pom - pom's biggest & most frequent counters
Eelektross

Despite resisting both of your STAB moves this thing packs an AV almost always.
Unless your opponent is packing a steel type they will typically want to volt switch on your skuntank allowing you to get off a Hefty (66.8 - 78.8%) And if stench proc's then it's simply goodnight. Worth noting Acid downpour is nice to have also because it has a 31.3% chance to OHKO The common AV Hitmonchan after rocks & OHKO's uninvested one's without fail. Imo that's why it's better than Darkinium-z.

Kanga is a very fun mon to use and fits here really well. Kanga, being weak to fighting, struggles against faster fighting types such as Primeape. However, Pom-Pom saves kanga from a hard hitting Primeape as it switches in on the Close Combat and makes Primeape both switch out and take Rocky Helmet damage. This allows Pom-Pom to get a free Calm Mind up which can be extremely dangerous late game. As well as fighting types, Kanga struggles against bulky Grass types such as Tangela. Pom-Pom and can switch into these mons and bop them with Hurricane. Kanga also helps Pom-Pom as it can chip mons that Pom-Pom usually wouldnt OHKO with Fake Out.

Stoutland @ Choice Band
Ability: Scrappy
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Return
- Superpower
- Pursuit
- Facade

Stoutland has been able to cement itself in the meta as a powerful and threatening wallbreaker thanks to its great ability, movepool and Attack stat. The dog compliments Oricorio Pom-Pom by being able to threaten a lot of the defensive Pokemon that trouble the cheerleader bird. Its Choice Band set is able to break through the Rock, Ice, and Ground-types that Ori has trouble with, including Aggron, Aurorus, Froslass, Sandslash-Alola, Regirock, as well as Electric-types such as Eelektross, and Lanturn, being able to OHKO or 2HKO each one of the aforementioned threats with the exception of Regirock.

252+ Atk Choice Band Stoutland Superpower vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Aggron: 456-540 (162.2 - 192.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ Atk Choice Band Stoutland Superpower vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Sandslash-Alola: 656-772 (185.3 - 218%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ Atk Choice Band Stoutland Superpower vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Aurorus: 1004-1184 (259.4 - 305.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ Atk Choice Band Stoutland Superpower vs. 252 HP / 56+ Def Regirock: 182-216 (50 - 59.3%) -- 80.1% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ Atk Choice Band Stoutland Return vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Lanturn: 378-445 (96.6 - 113.8%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO

252+ Atk Choice Band Stoutland Return vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Eelektross: 294-346 (78.6 - 92.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ Atk Choice Band Stoutland Return vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Froslass: 322-381 (93.8 - 111%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO after Leftovers recovery

Some of the Pokemon mentioned above, such as Froslass, Regirock, and Sandslash-Alola might attempt to threaten a team with Will-O-Wisp or Toxic, which can turn into a double edged sword if Stoutland manages to get burned or poisoned, since its move Facade allows it to do an even more ridiculous amount of damage to all sort of threats, some of which threaten the little bird.

In return (Haha, funny), Oricorio Pom-Pom can help Stoutland by beating some of the Pokemon that threaten or wall the dog, being able to beat Gurdurr, Hitmonchan, Qwiflfish as well as Tangela. Furthermore, Oricorio Pom-Pom can help Stoutland by making use of lures, such as HP Fighting or Ground, if Stout is unable to lock itself into Superpower at any point during the battle.

In conclusion, it must be noted that this duo can often struggle with Scarfers such as Primeape as well as faster threats such as Raichu-Alola. These two mons function as offensive partners, being able to get check and counter many of the mons that each other don’t appreciate. Utilize a defensive backbone by adding Pokemon such as Quagsire, Sableye, or Sandslash-Alola that can take on faster threats that the duo can struggle with.

Thank you for reading.

► Firstly: Thank you all for voting for my Alolachu/Gurdurr post! It was really fun writing it and so I really wanted to participate in another round!

► Oricorio, for me, is one of the best ways to deal with fat things, namely stall. Accordingly, it has a hard time dealing with more offensive builds. So I wanted to find a partner that has a better matchup against offense, maybe switchin to Ice and Rock Type attacks and that appreciates Oricorio's ability to shut down stall and sponge common offensive types in PU. To be honest, I thought of Gurdurr first but that was sniped already haha. However, PU isn't known for having not many good fighting types (which is what I am looking for when finding the partner for Oricorio).

Pokémonsprite_107_XY.gif
Pokémonsprite_741a_Rückseite_SoMo.gif

► Hitmonchan maybe isn't as reliable in switching into rock type attacks like Gurdurr but it can switchin to special Ice type attacks and can still wreck the Ice core with Mach Punch. Additionally, it has Rapid Spin which isn't provided by Gurdurr. Also, its ability to be a big nuisance to offense helps Oricorio out a lot! But let's go in detail.

Of course it isn't a autowin against stall but with the right support, hazard stack for example (since most of the time the play for stall is stalling out PP), it takes many kills from that archetype. The only exception beeing Stall with Spdef Aggron over Regirock. And there is where Hitmonchan finds his first time to shine.

- Rapid Spin

► Not only is Rapid Spin Support nice for Oricorio, it also synergizes better than Defog would (because Spike Stacking allows Oricorio to deal with Stall better). The only thing being unimpressed by that would probably be the already mentioned Aggron since it can retaliate with a rock type move and ignore Toxic but that's why Hitmonchan is there in the first place.

► For other archetypes though, Hitmonchan puts a number to more common switchins to Oricorio like Regirock, Alolaslash, Aurorus, Rotom Frost or Type:Null. Pokemon like Lanturn or Eelektross also like to switchin to Oricorio which Hitmonchan is also able to deal with thanks to the added bulk of the AV (However, Oricorio checks both too thanks to Toxic and Roost). Alolan Exeggutor is a problem for that particular Oricorio as well so I thought Ice Punch might work here over Tpunch.

► On the other hand, Oricorio helps out Hitmonchan to put in work as a late game sweeper as well. Mudsdale, basically every Flying Type, defensive Mesprit, Jellicent or Qwilfish and Gurdurr are all decent checks to Hitmonchan but get 1v1ed or chipped down by the bird.

► In conclusion, that core is a nice start for building classic bulky offense (especially with the suggestion that follows below). However, it doesn't come without flaws. Since it is a more offensively oriented core, you want to keep an eye out for things they can't check offensively. Mesprit and Froslass both can be problematic because of their ability to tank Oricorio's and Hitmonchan's hirs easily and strike back with much damage (the latter only if you run Ice Punch for Eggy). If you decide to run the more reliable STAB over Hurricane on Oricorio you'll find yourself struggling against the likes of Gurdurr or opposing Hitmonchan with Ice Punch.
► So when building with that core, Spikes, as I mentioned, are beneficial. I would choose Froslass over Qwilfish because it has a better shot against Mesprit, Hitmonchan and Gurdurr if you run Z.
