Welcome to Smogon! Take a moment to read the Introduction to Smogon for a run-down on everything Smogon, and make sure you take some time to read the global rules.
Hi I'm late oops. Anyway, with 4 votes, this week's winner is KellyKafka with his Whirlwind Articuno ! A special thanks to Twilight for breaking the tie between Whirlwind and Sunny Day, I really appreciate it !
This week subject is...
Simisear ! Its incredible movepool, access to Nasty Plot, good Special Attack and Speed make Simisear a formidable wallbreaker and stallbreaker with a limited amount of safe switchins. However, its large movepool and typing allow it to potentially run other sets effectively. Good luck and have fun ! You can find the blacklisted sets here, same rules as always !
Choice Scarf allows Simisear to reach 496 speed, outpacing +1 Jynx, Primeape and Lilligant, as well as +2 Omastar and Adamant Sandslash-Alola. Overheat and Fire Blast are the STAB moves of choice, providing a high-power burst move as well as a more consistent clean-up STAB. Focus Blast rounds off the coverage, OHKOing both Omastar and Lycanroc while doing a hefty chunk to Guzzlord on a predicted switch.
Will-O-Wisp is the last move, crippling common switchins like Hitmonchan. Grass Knot could also be used but is a terrible move to be locked into and simply switching out of bulky waters like Gastrodon and Jellicent is preferred (though how often are they even switching into Simisear anymore?).
252 SpA Simisear Overheat vs. +1 0 HP / 0 SpD Lilligant: 296-350 (105.3 - 124.5%)
252 SpA Simisear Fire Blast vs. +1 0 HP / 0 SpD Lilligant: 252-296 (89.6 - 105.3%)
252 SpA Simisear Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Lycanroc: 306-362 (105.1 - 124.3%)
252 SpA Simisear Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Omastar: 288-340 (102.4 - 120.9%)
252 SpA Simisear Focus Blast vs. -1 0 HP / 4 SpD Solid Rock Carracosta: 342-403 (118.3 - 139.4%)
(It should carry Aqua Jet though)
252 SpA Simisear Overheat vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Primeape: 235-277 (86.7 - 102.2%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
Simisear has a decent SpAtt to profit from so the use of Choice Specs can come in handy. Specs combined with a strong STAB Fire Blast is able to do a
lot of damage to anything which doesnt really resist its fire moves. When Simisear comes into Blaze range, then Fire Blast is boosted as Blaze gives it some more power when its HP is low.
Focus Blast and Hidden Power [Grass] helps to break through pokémon, which can give Simisear trouble. Will-o-Wisp is a nice lure to lure in physical attackers and cripples them down.
Calcs:
252 SpA Choice Specs Simisear Hidden Power Grass vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Jellicent: 156-184 (38.6 - 45.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Simisear Hidden Power Grass vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Quagsire: 460-544 (116.7 - 138%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Simisear Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Quagsire: 157-186 (39.8 - 47.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 SpA Choice Specs Simisear Fire Blast vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Golem-Alola: 156-184 (51.8 - 61.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Simisear Hidden Power Grass vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Golem-Alola: 228-270 (75.7 - 89.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 SpA Choice Specs Simisear Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Claydol: 189-223 (58.3 - 68.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Simisear Hidden Power Grass vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Claydol: 138-164 (42.5 - 50.6%) -- 2.3% chance to 2HKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Simisear Fire Blast vs. 244 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Hitmonchan: 136-162 (45 - 53.6%) -- 35.5% chance to 2HKO
Simisear has gotten worse since Guzzlord dropped, but it can still salvage some use by using Z-Focus Blast as a lure for Guzzlord. It can also randomly hit Silvally-Dragon, but don't expect it to do much unboosted
252 SpA Simisear All-Out Pummeling (190 BP) vs. 0 HP / 60 SpD Guzzlord: 510-602 (86.8 - 102.5%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
+2 252 SpA Simisear All-Out Pummeling (190 BP) vs. 0 HP / 60 SpD Guzzlord: 1020-1202 (173.7 - 204.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 252 SpA Simisear All-Out Pummeling (190 BP) vs. 0 HP / 60 SpD Assault Vest Guzzlord: 682-804 (116.1 - 136.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
A mixed set utilizing Knock Off which helps remove items like AV from Hitmonchan and Lanturn, Eviolite from Type: Null, Lefties from other bulky Pokemon etc. While in some of these cases like Lanturn it can't break through them that well, it opens up the door for something else to take advantage of this. Then standard coverage because this things movepool is depressing.
Similar to how Nasty Plot sets may run Taunt for a better fat m/u, this set tries to exploit offensive builds relying on sacking to properly deal with Simisear. Flame Charge's speed boost can make it rather overwhelming for offense while still threatening fat with Nasty Plot's breaking prowess.
Simisear @ Firium Z
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Sunny Day
- Nasty Plot
- Fire Blast
- Solar Beam
The only set I ever used, Simisear is disappointing af and useless. Sometimes you can win a 5050 vs a sandslash and setup without being KOed by earthquake. Thanks for reading
Physical Simisear can do some business as well. Normal switch ins like Lanturn is OHKOed (Tectonic Rage 113.5 - 134% ), Hitmonchan is OHKOed after one power up punch while switching in (Regular Flare Blitz 64.9 - 76.8%, +1 Flare Blitz 97.3 - 114.5%), Clefairy is clean OHKO after PUP (Regular Gunk Shot 74.4 - 87.7% , +1 Gunk Shot 111 - 130.8%).
Ah yes, Simisear. The one of the monkeys I haven't memed the fuck outta...
Simisear @ Wiki Berry
Ability: Gluttony
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Flare Blitz
- Superpower
- Knock Off
- Recycle
This is a pretty simple set. Spam Flare Blitz and get healed when ur below 50% (I also have it set so that you get healed when switching into Stealth Rock twice). Then, when you predict a switch, you can get the berry back with Recycle. Simisears love to recycle. Just like my sense of humor.
Simisear @ Life Orb
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 152 Atk / 104 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
IVs: 29 HP
- Work Up
- Fire Blast
- Grass Knot
- Superpower
Keeps the appeal of Nasty Plot Simisear, but uses Work Up to boost its physical attack and Superpower dents stuff like Audino, Guzzlord, and Type: Null. Attack investment allow Simisear to OHKO Guzzlord with +1 Superpower after Stealth Rock.
Just a classic stallbreaker set on that sweet monkey :)
101 base speed + taunt is pretty handy, will-o-wisp is there to cripple every physical attacker and Knock Off is here to, well, knock off items.
Figy Berry+ Gluttony + Recycle also provides some nice recovery.
General idea:
The set is simple: click Hone Claws and then select one of the other moves. Taking the physical route has the advantage to take down regul SpD walls that generally tank NP Simisear.
Simisear has a good number of set-up opportunities thanks to its 101 base Spe.
Flare Blitz is the main STAB, whereas Gunk Shot is here for coverage. In particular, Gunk Shot allows Simisear to make good use of Hone Claws' accuracy boost.
Both Knock Off and Superpower are good for coverage: pick whatever is more useful to your team.
Aguav Berry + Gluttony is a nice way to recover HP.
to Hitmonchan +1 Flare Blitz deals between 97.3 and 114.5%
to Clefairy +1 Gunk Shot deals between 111 and 130.8%
+1 252 Atk Simisear Gunk Shot vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Altaria: 176-208 (49.7 - 58.7%) -- 71.9% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery (but the poison chance is a thing)
+1 252 Atk Simisear Flare Blitz vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Skuntank: 336-396 (96.5 - 113.7%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO after Black Sludge recovery
+1 252 Atk Simisear Superpower vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Stoutland: 350-414 (112.5 - 133.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 252 Atk Simisear Superpower vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Kangaskhan: 386-456 (109.9 - 129.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 252 Atk Simisear Superpower vs. 136 HP / 0 Def Drampa: 370-436 (111.7 - 131.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 252 Atk Simisear Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Jellicent: 350-412 (102.6 - 120.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
So Z-Hyper Beam basically hits everything Z-Fire Blast and Z-Grass Knot (bar Carbink) hit + some other stuff, at the cost of being a less reliable move in general. Notably, it hits Altaria, Guzzlord, and even Lanturn after a little bit of chip, which can be a huge pain for Simisear. Grass Knot in last slot hits Gastrodon and Quagsire in case they have something like Altaria in the back while Focus Blast hits Guzzlord in case they have another Z-Hyper Beam target.
+2 252 SpA Simisear Breakneck Blitz (200 BP) vs. 0 HP / 60 SpD Guzzlord: 538-633 (91.6 - 107.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock (if grass knot)
+2 252 SpA Simisear Breakneck Blitz (200 BP) vs. 252 HP / 160+ SpD Altaria: 269-317 (75.9 - 89.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+2 252 SpA Simisear Breakneck Blitz (200 BP) vs. 40 HP / 248+ SpD Lanturn: 307-362 (76.5 - 90.2%) -- 25% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+2 252 SpA Simisear Breakneck Blitz (200 BP) vs. 252 HP / 52 SpD Gastrodon: 396-467 (92.9 - 109.6%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock (if focus blast)
I just want to thank you all for participating and keeping this thread alive. Also, with 11 (mine doesn't count) posts, this week has been the week with most submissions so far! Anyway submission phase is now over, you can now vote for your favourite set, same rules as always, voting ends on Sunday !
I'll be voting for Scizorphobic's Flame Charge Simisear, tried it a bit myself and offense has no way of dealing with it outside of scarfers like Dodrio and sacking.
