User Safety

The Smogon forums staff takes the safety of their forumgoers very seriously and we over here in the Wi-Fi sub-forum welcome the opportunity to do our part as well.

Errors and omissions occur. However, we use reasonable care to ensure that we include as much useful information as we possibly can.
If forumgoers have any concerns or further suggestions, they should never feel discouraged to reach out to a staff member at their earliest convenience.
We think that it is better to be safe than sorry.

Without further ado:

On the topic of using Google documents as a means of a trade thread:

The forumgoers that have already familiarized themselves with our Forum Rules will already know about the rule down below:
  • Do not post a link to another site or a spreadsheet as your trade thread. You must list all the information on the forum.
While we do not completely prohibit the use of Google documents, especially not when most of the forum-goers using them already have an existing trade thread in our section, we still wanted to explain that a part of our reason includes concerns regarding safety and privacy: if you use your real first name and/or your real last name for your Google Account, then this piece of private information will be visible to anyone with access to your google document.

A potential workaround for hiding your name when online is to publish the sheet to the web, and share that link to other people. Within your Google Sheet, go to File > Publish to the web. With the link tab selected, choose whether you want to publish the entire document or just a sheet, and leave the publishing type as web page. Expand the "Published content & settings" section, and check the "Automatically republish when changes are made", if desired. Click Publish to obtain a shareable link. If you share this link with other people, they will not be able to see your name, even if you have the parent sheet open and are logged in. Note that if you share the parent (direct) link to your sheet, users will be able to see your name. Should you wish to stop publishing, go to File > Publish to the web > expand the Published content & settings section > Stop publishing.

On the topic of using 2-Step Verification:

In a similar vain, we also wanted to welcome the opportunity to remind our forumgoers about the benefits of using 2-Step Verification when it comes to protecting their accounts like Smogon, Nintendo, and Discord accounts for example. Data breaches happen every now and then, and it can never hurt to add an extra layer of protection to your accounts.

We compiled the ways in which you can set up 2-Step Verification for accounts our forumgoers are most likely to use to stay in touch with us:

  1. Smogon: Click on your username on top of the website > Click on "Password and security" > Enable "Two-step verification"
  2. Nintendo: https://en-americas-support.nintend...up-2-step-verification-for-a-nintendo-account
  3. Discord: https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/219576828-Setting-up-Two-Factor-Authentication
We will update the list in the future if need be.

Stay safe everyone!

DS/3DS Games Dying En Masse

The Smogon Wi-Fi staff welcomes the opportunity to raise awareness about the fact that DS/3DS games have reportedly been starting to die en masse.
Upon investigation, players discovered that the cartridge type that Nintendo has used since the NDS days only has a life span between 5 and 15 years.
While the initial report said that primarily PAL versions had been affected by this, newer reports have shown that US and JPN versions suffer the same fate.

In the light of the foregoing circumstances, we recommend that you transfer valuable Pokémon to Pokémon Bank and/or Pokémon HOME.
We also wanted to mention that Pokémon Bank might not be a permanent solution, as the servers might go offline in a foreseeable future.
Better safe than sorry!

3DS eShop Shutdown

As many have probably heard, Nintendo recently announced via Twitter that they will be shutting down the eShop services for the Wii U and 3DS as of "late March 2023."
This will notably make the Gen 1/2 VC versions and Bank/Transporter no longer available for purchase or download, repsectively. However, after the shutdown, those who have downloaded Bank by then will be able to continue to use it for free for an undisclosed amount of time.

"Even after late March 2023, and for the foreseeable future, it will still be possible to redownload games and DLC, receive software updates, and enjoy online play on Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems."

This thread will be updated when any new relevant information is announced.

Not new information since it's from that link in the tweet, but it's been mentioned a few times and worth highlighting: The cutoff for adding funds is earlier than the eShop shutdown
  • As of May 23, 2022, it will no longer be possible to use a credit card to add funds to an account in Nintendo eShop on Wii U or the Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
  • As of August 29, 2022, it will no longer be possible to use a Nintendo eShop Card to add funds to an account in Nintendo eShop on Wii U or the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. However, it will still be possible to redeem download codes until late March 2023.
The loophole to this is linking your NNID wallet (used on 3ds) to your Nintendo Account wallet (used on Switch) since you can use the shared balance to purchase content on any of these systems until late March 2023 (after which you can only purchase for the Switch).

Reminder that the wifi is being shutdown on the 27th of this month, so grab bank before then!

Second order of business (c/p from discord)
This is spreading around the internet so by now you've probably heard of people losing their save data with the recent SV update. I.e.
Here's what we know so far:
* With the recent update (which includes the DLC preorder and ability to connect to PoGo), some players have started receiving errors regarding their save data
* It appears to be a very small number of players affected
* There is no known cause. Some speculate it is due to turning off your save immediately after connecting to GO, while others have never done so. There isn't a obvious indication of whether it is carts and/or digital saves
* The error appears to be different than the normal, save data is corrupted message. It has been reported that the game does not fully boot and the recovery saves are inaccessible by the profile.
* The OP of the linked thread has said they were able to boot the game by making a new profile, but obv they don't have access to their save data.
* The OP has also said that the save data still exists, but the game will just not boot all the way.

At this time it is unclear of the implications of this issue. Given the game's lack of normal behavior and what sounds like a softlock of sorts, it seems like this is patchable and does not mean that your save is gone, corrupt, or randomly deleted. Some people may say that, but others say the opposite. However, there is no guarantee either that they aren't gone. We just don't know.

There is no recommended solution att to avoid this behavior. However, if you receive this error, personally I would advise not doing anything permanent. Clearly there are issues, and I expect a patch to fix them.

In this post regarding Imgur's updated ToS (effective May 15, 2023), it appears they will start deleting "old, unused, and inactive content that is not tied to a user account." It is unclear what "old, unused, and inactive" means and whether public/community posts are affected (note that things are hidden by default so this wouldn't apply to you unless you explicitly published it), but if you use Imgur to host images for your threads, you may want to consider uploading the images to the forums as attachments, finding an alternative host (i.e. discord), or reuploading your images under an Imgur account.

Staff is considering alternatives; however, no information is available at this time.
