Raichu

[OVERVIEW]

Thanks to its access to Nasty Plot, a wide array of coverage options, and an exceptional Speed tier, Raichu proves itself to be a unique Electric-type that is as underprepared for as it is dangerous. With its excellent ability in Lightningrod, Raichu makes for a unique stop to opposing Electric-types; combine this with the fact that Raichu offensively checks most U-turn users, such as Scyther and Liepard, and it proves to be a unique offensive check to VoltTurn teams. Additionally, Raichu's access to Nasty Plot allows it to boost its Special Attack to formidable levels, letting it potentially break past common checks to Electric-types, such as Rhydon and Lanturn. However, Raichu does suffer from its flaws, chief among them being its atrocious frailty. As such, Raichu finds few opportunities to set up Nasty Plot, and its damage output will be hindered accordingly. Furthermore, Raichu faces steep competition from other Electric-types, such as Rotom and Rotom-S, which boast secondary STAB attacks, have defensive typings that actually let them check certain Pokemon, and have more raw power. It should also be noted that, while its Speed is commendable, Raichu falls prey to many priority attackers and revenge killers, such as Kangaskhan and Swellow, respectively. Raichu also has difficulty breaking past specially defensive walls, such as Roselia and Lanturn.

Moves
========

Thunderbolt is Raichu's primary STAB attack, being reliable and powerful and having decent neutral coverage against most of the tier. Nasty Plot is used to boost Raichu's Special Attack to terrifying levels, allowing it to break holes in the opposing team more easily. Focus Blast provides excellent coverage alongside Thunderbolt, most notably hitting Rhydon, Ferroseed, and Piloswine. Hidden Power Ice is the preferred option to take up the last moveslot, hitting the Grass-types such as Roselia, Torterra, and Vileplume that otherwise give Raichu a hard time; however, Hidden Power Grass is an option to hit Lanturn and Quagsire harder. Before using Hidden Power Grass, it should be noted that +2 Focus Blast 2HKOes both Lanturn and Quagsire, so Hidden Power Grass should only be used if you favor reliability over the additional coverage that Hidden Power Ice would have. Encore can be used instead, locking a foe into a status move such as Stealth Rock or Will-O-Wisp and thereby giving free turns for Raichu to set up a Nasty Plot; however, Raichu typically prefers the extra coverage.

Set Details
========

Maximum investment in Special Attack and Speed allows Raichu to hit as hard and as fast as possible, letting it Speed tie with Tauros and Archeops. Life Orb grants Raichu a much better damage output, most notably giving it the ability to OHKO Klinklang and 2HKO Mega Audino after Stealth Rock with Focus Blast and +2 Thunderbolt, respectively. Lightningrod increases Raichu's defensive utility by boosting its Special Attack if it is hit with an Electric-type attack, letting it check opposing Electric-types.

Usage Tips
========

Ideally, Raichu should be sent out mid- or late-game once its checks have been sufficiently weakened, potentially set up a Nasty Plot, and clean up the opposing team. Be sure to recognize when to set up Nasty Plot and when to hold off on it, as a misprediction can often spell the end for Raichu due to its frailty; accordingly, Raichu should set up either against Pokemon that can't hurt it, such as Rotom-S, or against foes it threatens out, such as Pelipper. Raichu can be played early-game as a pivot to punish users of Electric-type attacks, taking advantage of foes that utilize common attacks such as Volt Switch and Thunder Wave. It should be noted that this strategy is risky, as most Pokemon that use these attacks can still beat Raichu with alternative attacks, such as Shadow Ball Rotom. Using coverage moves as needed is recommended; for example, if you are predicting Rhydon to come in on Raichu to take the predicted Thunderbolt, Raichu should use Focus Blast.

Team Options
========

Raichu appreciates being paired with strong wallbreakers such as Shiftry, Magmortar, and Sawk, as they can pave the way for Raichu to sweep late-game. Shiftry in particular makes for an outstanding offensive partner to Raichu, removing most of its checks, such as Lanturn, beating most opposing Grass-types, and generally breaking walls so that Raichu can clean up late-game, while Raichu beats the Flying-types that trouble Shiftry, such as Scyther. If Shiftry is chosen as a partner, it should run Extrasensory as to lure in and KO Vileplume, which is a solid check to Raichu. Magmortar can defeat Grass-types, wear down Lanturn, and bust holes in defensive teams so that Raichu can have an easier time cleaning them up; in return, Raichu beats the Water-types that trouble Magmortar. Flying-types such as Archeops and Vivillion can help wear down Lanturn, pressure Grass-types, and appreciate Raichu discouraging the use of Electric-type attacks with Lightningrod. In general, Pokemon that appreciate Raichu deterring the use of Electric-type attacks make for solid partners, as Raichu provides them with a safety net of sorts. Raichu greatly appreciates entry hazard support from the likes of Mesprit and Garbodor, getting chip damage on the foe as it switches in. Mesprit in particular can set up Stealth Rock, is immune to the Ground-type attacks that comprise Raichu's sole weakness, and provides Healing Wish support to bring back a weakened Raichu so that it can play more recklessly. Alternatively, Garbodor can set up Spikes and punishes users of priority moves, which Raichu is susceptible to.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Raichu can choose to use an all-out attacking set utilizing either Life Orb or Choice Specs to take advantage of its excellent coverage; however, this set is underwhelming in power because it provides much less of a boost to Raichu's Special Attack than Nasty Plot. Grass Knot is an alternative to Hidden Power Grass, hitting foes like Golurk and Rhydon for incredible amounts of damage, but both are hit hard as it is by Hidden Power Ice and Focus Blast, respectively, and Grass Knot hits for less damage than Hidden Power Grass does against most everything else, most notably Lanturn. Raichu has a unique physical movepool, so Choice Band with Volt Tackle, Return, Knock Off, and Iron Tail can be used as a strong physical wallbreaker; however, this set is generally not worth it and is done better by other physical attackers such as Sawk. Finally, Raichu can utilize an array of support moves, such as Knock Off and Nuzzle, but it is far too frail to effectively fulfill a purely supportive role.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Grass-types**: Grass-types, such as Roselia, Vileplume, and Gourgeist-XL, make for effective checks to Raichu, resisting all of the moves it typically carries and fearing only +2 Hidden Power Ice. Roselia in particular makes for an excellent counter to Raichu due to its naturally high Special Defense, so it can easily survive any attack Raichu might use and can either use it as fodder to set up Spikes or 2HKO it with Sludge Bomb after either one round of Life Orb recoil or Stealth Rock.

**Lanturn**: Being both one of the most common and solid Raichu checks, Lanturn can handle any attack that Raichu can go for, as it can only 4HKO Lanturn with Focus Blast or Hidden Power Grass, and this assumes that the former connects on all fouruses. However, Lanturn cannot entirely counter Raichu, as it can 2HKO Lanturn with these moves at +2 after Stealth Rock. Nonetheless, this is not a likely scenario, so Lanturn is often the best defensive check that most teams have for Raichu.

**Revenge Killers*: Due to its frailty and susceptibility to being worn down from Life Orb recoil, Raichu is very vulnerable to revenge killing from both priority users and faster attackers; however, they cannot switch into Raichu safely. Strong priority attacks, such as Sucker Punch from Cacturne or Shiftry, can revenge kill Raichu once it has suffered some prior damage. On the other hand, faster attackers, such as Swellow and Floatzel, can pick off a weakened Raichu with Boomburst or Hydro Pump, respectively.

I mean I've used this and I've found fb/hp ice the best coverage since really being accurate against Lilligant as well as Plume tang and exeggutor is really nice and the strongest hit on golurk that usually dies at +2 regardless and the accuracy vs rhydon isn't worth missing out on any dragon or grass type

[OVERVIEW]

  • the HANDSOMEST mouse
  • sits at a really cool speed tier, outpacing everything up to liepard and pyroar, while tying w tauros and archeops
  • seperates itself from other electrics in that it has access to nasty plot and grass knot
  • great support movepool, with access to cool moves like encore and knock off
  • great offensive coverage with grass/electric/fighting
  • great ability in lightningrod, letting it stop volt switch, and checking stuff like rotom-s. combine this with being an offensive check to scyther, raichu has a stellar matchup versus voltturn
  • weak without a boost, which really hurts it considering its frailty gives it few set up oppurtunities. particular emphasis will be put on this on writeup
  • although its speed is solid, raichu is vulnerable to priority and faster attackers. literally all priority users beat it, while nearly all scarfers beat raichu and swellow absolutely trashes it
  • faces competition with other electric types such rotom and rotom-s who boast a secondary typing + stab, can actually defensively check things, and have more power without a boost Mention Zebstrika here as well, it has a much better speed tier since it outpaces Tauros / Archeops / Floatzel which is really helpful
  • frail, with few resistances. some resisted attacks can even 2hko raichu, such as archeops' acrobatics or swellow brave bird Swellow's Brave Bird isn't that relevant imo
  • struggles to get past bulky spdef walls, like lanturn or roselia

Moves
========

  • tbolt is reliable stab, hitting decently hard and smacking waters & birds
  • nasty plot lets raichu boost its special attack to solid levels
  • focus blast hits lanturn harder than raichus other moves,while providing neutral coverage against grass-types
  • grass knot hits grounds like rhydon or quag really hard, which stop typical electrics fairly well Mention HP Grass to get more reliable damage on light ground types and lanturn
  • encore can be used on a foe who last used a support attack, such as stealth rock or moonlight, to create opportunities to set up a nasty plot tbh I think encore should be deslashed, but I'll wait for other QC members to weigh in before giving the final say
  • hp ice can be used to hit vileplume or exeg but thats literally it Roselia is more relevant than eggy, and even Gourgeist could go here

Set Details
========

  • life orb nets you a lot better damage output and some notable rolls, like guaranteeing ohkoing klinklang or 2hkoing megadino without need of rocks, than you would without it
  • lightningrod creates set up opportunities and gives raichu some defensive utility. can also boost spa if u switch it into an elec attack
  • max speed and max spa to hit as hard and as fast as possible
  • lefties is an option if you wanna increase raichus longevity, but it misses out on a lot of power Don't think this is even worth a mention tbh

Usage Tips
========

  • send raichu out mid-late game once its checks are weakened to set up a nasty plot and clean up
  • set up on stuff that cant hurt raichu too much, like rotom-s
  • raichu pivot early game to stop volt switch, but this is risky considering if the opponent uses a non-electric move
  • use coverage moves as needed (ie using gk when predict a rhydon switch, or focus blast when you predict a ferroseed switch, etc) I mean if you predicting the switch to those you can end up just Nasty Plotting or clicking T-Bolt since you OHKO them the next turn

Team Options
========

  • shiftry beats lanturn, and most grass types. extrasensory shiftry is also a really great partner considering it lures in vileplume, one of raichus hardest counters
  • flying types like swellow or archeops can help weaken lanturn (raichus hardest counter), beat vileplume, and appreciate raichu detering the use of electric type moves.
  • magmortar counters vileplume and roselia, helps weaken lanturn with eq, and appreciates raichu luring in rhydon and quag with grass knot and generally beating water types. also it just generally punches holes so raichu has an easier time cleaning late game. its magmortar, idk what you expect
  • entry hazard setters like mesprit or garbodor help wear down the opposing team by punishing switches, so raichu has an easier time late-game
  • teammates that appreciate raichu deterring electric-type attacks, such as scyther or samurott, appreciate having raichu as that safety cushion

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • specs+volt switch
  • physical set w volt tackle, knock off, iron tail, and return
  • support moves like nuzzle knock off or fake out
Mention like an all out attacking set, iirc someone was using like Knock / T-Bolt / Focus Blast / Grass Knot with LO to just get damage off on a bunch of stuff and remove lefties and eviolites from stuff like Lanturn / Roselia

Checks and Counters

**Grass-types**: Grass-types, such as Roselia, Vileplume, and Gourgeist-XL, make for effective checks to Raichu, resisting all moves it typically carries and fearing only a boosted Hidden Power Ice. Roselia in particular makes for an excellent counter to Raichu, due to its naturally high Special Defense, can easily stomach any attack Raichu might use and either use it as fodder to set-up Spikes, or 2HKO it with Sludge Bomb after a round of Life Orb recoil or Stealth Rock.

**Lanturn**: Being both one of the most common and solid Raichu checks, Lanturn can handle any attack Raichu might want to go for, as it can merely 4HKO Lanturn with Focus Blast, and this assumes they will all hit. However, Lanturn cannot entirely counter Raichu, as it can potentially 2HKO Lanturn with a boosted Focus Blast after Stealth Rock. However, this is not a likely scenario, so Lanturn is often the best check most teams have to Raichu.

**Revenge Killers*: Due to its frailty and susceptability to being worn down from Life Orb, Raichu is very susceptable to revenge killing in the form of both priority and faster attackers; however, they cannot switch into Raichu safely. Strong priority attacks, such as a Sucker Punch from Cacturne or Shiftry, can revenge kill Raichu once it has suffered some prior damage. On the other hand, faster attackers, such as Swellow or Floatzel, can pick off a weakened Raichu with a Facade Boomburst, physical swellow isn't as good or Hydro Pump, respectively.
Implement the bold then tag me for the stamp

hp grass is horrible and its literal only niche is reliably hitting lanturn but focus blast hits just as hard and its worse than gk in every situation

implemented otherwise

i talked with bolts and yeah encore is being unslashed

Overview

Don't highlight support options if none of them are even on the main set.

Nasty Plot

Add Ferroseed as Focus Blast target, because that's one of the more important ones. Also add that Grass Knot 2HKOs Regirock, which Thunderbolt fails to otherwise unless Raichu is boosted. Expand on why Mesprit and Garbodor are good partners instead of just saying they provide hazard support, as otherwise it's an abitrary mention. Note the other traits that Mesprit and Garbodor bring to the table such as Mesprit having a Ground immunity while providing Healing Wish support should Raichu get heavily weakened, or Garbodor punishing priority moves aimed at Raichu. Raichu can also KO some Ground-types that give Garbodor issues such as Rhydon, Claydol, and Sandslash.

Other Options

Fake Out is pretty bad remove it.

2/3

After some discussion with the QC team, we have decided that moveslot 4 should be changed to Hidden Power Ice / Hidden Power Grass.

Grass Knot on its own is pretty bad because Focus Blast already deals heavy damage to Rhydon and 2HKOs Quagsire if you manage to hit 2, and as a grass type coverage move its pretty subpar in the sense given how it does pitiful damage to Lanturn. HP Ice is so much better than how its being described currently, hitting Grass-types for reliable damage as well as Ground-types is excellent, as galbia pointed out earlier. Being able to cover the likes of Torterra, Vileplume, Roselia, Golurk, Gourgeist formes, as well as being an accurate attack on Lilligant, combined with Focus Blast is by far the best coverage. However, HP Grass is still good if you want to have reliability, as while it hits Lanturn for the same damage as Focus Blast, it can't miss, and it also hits Rhydon and Quagsire without risking a miss as well.

Please update these slashes before or when you write this up.

With its excellent ability in Lightningrod, Raichu makes for a unique stop to opposing Electric-types; combine this with the fact that Raichu offensive checks most U-turn users, such as Scyther or Liepard, and it proves to be a unique stop to Volt-Turn I wouldn't really say it "stops" VoltTurn given how Lanturn's usually in those types of teams, leaving it as Lightning Rod lets Raichu be an offensive check to Electric-types is better. Additionally, Raichu's access to Nasty Plot allows it to boost its Special Attack to formidable levels, letting it potentially break past common checks to Electric-types, such as Rhydon or Lanturn, given an opportunity to set-up. However, Raichu does suffer from its flaws; chief among them being its atrocious frailty. Using coverage moves as needed is recommended: for example, if you are predicting a Ferroseed to come in on Raichu to take the Thunderbolt, it should use Focus Blast I'd probably mention Rhydon>Ferro since Ferro can be OHKOed by T-Bolt+Focus Blast, especially with hazards.

It is recommended that, if Shiftry (kinda prefer "that Shiftry, if it is chosen as a partner, run Extrasensory", but up to you on this one; in any case "should" should go because it's redundant with recommend) is chosen as a partner, it should run Extrasensory as to lure in and KO Vileplume, who which is a solid check to Raichu. Magmortar can defeat Grass-types, wear down Lanturn, and bust holes in defensive teams so Raichu can have an easier time cleaning; in return, Raichu beats the Water-types that trouble Magmortar. Flying-types such as Archeops or and Vivillion can help wear down Lanturn, pressure Grass-types, and appreciating appreciate Raichu discouraging the use of Electric-type attacks with Lightningrod. In general, Pokemon that appreciate Raichu deterring the use of Electric-type attacks make for solid partners, appreciating Raichu providing a safety net of sorts. Raichu greatly appreciates entry hazard support from the likes of Mesprit and Garbodor, getting chip damage on the foe upon switch- as it switches in. Mesprit in particular can set up Stealth Rock, is immune to the Ground-type attacks that are Raichu's sole weakness, and providing provides Healing Wish support to bring back Raichu once weakened so it can play more recklessly. On the other hand, Garbodor can lay Spikes (RC) and punishes the priority moves that Raichu is susceptable susceptible to.

Raichu can choose to use an all-out attacking set (RC) utilizing either Life Orb or Choice Specs (RC) a set which possesses to take advantage of its (subjective as far as content goes, changing the struck-through bit to "that possesses" is grammatically correct too) excellent coverage; (SC) however, (AC) this set is underwhelming in power due to the lack of a way to boost Raichu's Special Attack. Grass Knot is an alternative to Hidden Power Grass, hitting foes like Golurk or and Rhydon for incredible amounts, but both are hit hard as it is by Hidden Power Ice and Focus Blast, respectively, while ding a notable amount else than Hidden Power Grass would. (couple things went wrong here I guess; "and it doesn't hit any notable other Pokemon harder than Hidden Power Grass would" is grammatically correct, idk if it's 100% what you were trying to say though) Raichu has a unique physical movepool, and a Choice Band set of Volt Tackle, Return, Knock Off, and Iron Tail can be used as a strong physical wallbreaker; (SC) however, (AC) this is generally not worth it (RC) and is done better by other physical attackers such as Sawk. Additionally, Raichu, can utilize an array of support moves, such as Knock Off or Nuzzle, however but it is far too frail to effectively fulfill a purely supportive role.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Grass-types**: Grass-types, such as Roselia, Vileplume, and Gourgeist-XL, make for effective checks to Raichu, resisting all moves it typically carries and fearing only a boosted Hidden Power Ice. Roselia in particular makes for an excellent counter to Raichu (RC) due to its naturally high Special Defense, can easily stomach any attack Raichu might use, (AC) and can either use it as fodder to set up (remove hyphen) Spikes (RC) or 2HKO it with Sludge Bomb after a round of Life Orb recoil or Stealth Rock.

**Lanturn**: Being both one of the most common and solid Raichu checks, Lanturn can handle any attack Raichu might want to go for, as it can merely only 4HKO Lanturn with Focus Blast or Hidden Power Grass, and this assumes the former connects on all uses. However, Lanturn cannot entirely counter Raichu, as it can potentially 2HKO Lanturn with a boosted Focus Blast, or the uncommon Hidden Power Grass, after Stealth Rock. However, neither are likely scenarios is a likely scenario, so Lanturn is often the best defensive check most teams have for Raichu.

**Revenge Killers*: Due to its frailty and susceptability susceptibility to being worn down from Life Orb recoil, Raichu is very susceptable vulnerable to revenge killing in the form of from both priority users and faster attackers; however, they cannot switch into Raichu safely. Strong priority attacks, such as a Sucker Punch from Cacturne or Shiftry, can revenge kill Raichu once it has suffered some prior damage. On the other hand, faster attackers, such as Swellow or Floatzel, can pick off a weakened Raichu with a Boomburst or Hydro Pump, respectively.

Additionally, Raichu's access to Nasty Plot allows it to boost its Special Attack to formidable levels, letting it potentially break past common checks to Electric-types, such as Rhydon and Lanturn, given an opportunity to set up. However, Raichu does suffer from its flaws, chief among them being its atrocious frailty. As such, Raichu finds few opportunities to set up a Nasty Plot, and its damage output will be hindered accordingly. Furthermore, Raichu faces steep competition from other Electric-types, such as Rotom and Rotom-S, which boast secondary STAB attacks, have a defensive typings that actually let them check certain Pokemon, and have more raw power unboosted (Rotom doesn't boost). It should also be noted that, while it'(remove apostrophe)s Speed is commendable, Raichu falls prey to many priority attackers and revenge killers, such as Kangaskhan and Swellow, respectively. Raichu also has difficulty breaking past specially defensive walls, such as Roselia and Lanturn.

Thunderbolt is Raichu's primary STAB attack, being reliable, (RC) and powerful, (RC) and having decent neutral coverage against most of the tier. Nasty Plot is used to boost Raichu's already usable Special Attack to terrifying levels, allowing it to more easily break holes in the opposing team more easily. Focus Blast provides excellent coverage alongside Thunderbolt, most notably hitting Rhydon, Ferroseed, and Piloswine. Hidden Power Ice is the preferred option to take up the last moveslot, hitting the Grass-types such as Roselia, Torterra, and Vileplume that otherwise give Raichu a hard time; however, Hidden Power Grass is an option to more reliably hit Lanturn and Quagsire harder. Before using Hidden Power Grass, it should be noted that +2 a boosted Focus Blast hits 2HKOes both Lanturn and Quagsire for a 2HKO, and so Hidden Power Grass should only be used on sets that if you favor reliability over the additional coverage that Hidden Power Ice would have. (Either implement these changes or move the mentions of HP Grass into OO.) Encore can be used instead, locking a foe into a status move such as Stealth Rock or Will-O-Wisp and thereby giving free turns for Raichu to set up a Nasty Plot; however, Raichu typically prefers the extra coverage.

Set Details

Maximum investment in Special Attack and Speed allows Raichu to hit as hard and as fast as possible, letting it Speed tie with Tauros and Archeops. Life Orb is the preferred item for this set, as it grants Raichu a much better damage output, most notably giving it the ability to OHKO Klinklang and 2HKO Mega Audino after Stealth Rock with Focus Blast and a boosted +2 Thunderbolt, respectively. Lightningrod is the ability, increasing increases Raichu's defensive utility by boosting its Special Attack if it is hit with an Electric-type attack, letting it check opposing Electric-types.

Usage Tips

Ideally, Raichu should be sent out mid- or late-game, (RC) once its checks have been sufficiently weakened, potentially set up a Nasty Plot, and clean up the opposing team. Be sure to recognize when to set up a Nasty Plot and when to hold off on it, as a misprediction can often spell the end for Raichu due to its frailty; accordingly, Raichu should set up either against Pokemon that can't hurt it, such as Rotom-S, or against those foes it threatens out, such as Pelipper. Raichu can be played early-game as a pivot to punish users of Electric-type attacks, taking advantage of opponents who foes that utilize common attacks such as Volt Switch or and Thunder Wave. It should be noted that this strategy is risky, considering as most Pokemon that use these attacks can still beat Raichu with alternative attacks, (AC) such as Shadow Ball Rotom. Using coverage moves as needed is recommended; for example, if you are predicting a Rhydon to come in on Raichu to take the predicted Thunderbolt, it Raichu should use Focus Blast.
