ru cores threat analysis

pokemon rely on offensive and defensive synergy to function. cores of pokemon are units within teams that are built specifically to take advantage of these synergies between pokemon. many teams are built around such cores. the premise of this thread is to analyze cores by discussing the threats to them. hopefully this exercise helps to show how a core can either potentially beat threats or what common pokemon threaten it to further the teambuilding process.

i will not necessarily be using cores from the good cores thread (though i may use a few), but i recommend you check it out if you are looking for a core to build around.

procedure:

1. i will post a core comprised of 2 pokemon.

2. posters will have the chance to post threats to the core.
example: Substitute Nasty Plot Hoopa is a threat to the core of Snorlax + Cresselia because it outspeeds Snorlax and Cresselia and can setup against both and beat them with strong super-effective attacks

3. cycles will last for three days, there will be no voting.

rules:

1. starting with cycle 2 reservations are not allowed. if you have reserved for the first cycle, you have 24 hours to write up your post.

2. please post only pokemon that are viable in ru. preferably ones not listed lower than C- rank in the viability rankings. avoid using weird / very very specific sets to check these pokemon.

3. each poster may only nominate one threat.

4. when posting, please explain yourself. calcs are not necessary but please list more reasons than something simple like type synergy. be descriptive so that other posters and i can fully understand your reasoning behind your nomination. also please list a full set of the pokemon including its item, full moveset, ev spread, and nature. different sets can be posted for the same pokemon so long as they serve an entirely different purpose from the other set.

5. please be respectful to others, if someone posts something wrong do not post in the thread, i will take care of it.

clarifications regarding threats:
a threat to the core must check or counter at least one member and cannot be countered by the other. a threat does not necessarily need to be able to switch into both members of the core, but it should be difficult/annoying to switch into for the members of the core. of course, the biggest threats can counter both members or more of the core.

--

if anyone has suggestions for cores you can pm myself, roman, or zizalith on smogon or discord (roman#4216 / zizalith#8121)

Feraligatr @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Liquidation
- Aqua Jet
- Superpower

SD Feraligatr is able to set up Sword Dance and beat Miltoic 1v1 with Superpower (providing no Scald burn) whilst also surviving any hit from both mons.

  • +2 252+ Atk Life Orb Feraligatr Superpower vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Milotic: 269-317 (68.2 - 80.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
  • 252+ Atk Life Orb Feraligatr Superpower vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Milotic: 135-160 (34.2 - 40.6%) -- 50.2% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
  • +2 252+ Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Liquidation vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Steelix-Mega: 424-502 (119.7 - 141.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Hi broken threat here:

Kingdra @ Scope Lens
Ability: Sniper
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draco Meteor
- Hydro Pump
- Focus Energy
- Substitute/Agility

Fairly standard set, but deadly effective against that core due to one's water weakness/the other's total inability to punish it. Modest nature is preferable with Agility, but imo Sub is safer - especially against the potential Toxic Milotic - and Kingdra has a good enough speed tier in general with a + nature without interfering on its ability to break this core. The other useful aspect of this threat is that it can easily snowball when this core cannot handle it, making you at risk of having to lose more than just this very splashable core.

Virizion @ Rockium Z
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Leaf Blade
- Close Combat
- Stone Edge

Thanks to its Grass / Fighting typing, Virizion is able to set up on Milotic with Swords Dance (assuming No Scald) and dismantle the core easily with its STAB moves.

Calcs:

- +2 252 Atk Virizion Leaf Blade vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Milotic: 384-452 (97.4 - 114.7%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO after Leftovers recovery

- +2 252 Atk Virizion Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Steelix-Mega: 290-344 (81.9 - 97.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Vanilluxe @ Never-Melt Ice
Ability: Snow Warning
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Blizzard
- Freeze-Dry
- Taunt
- Ice Shard

Vanilluxe is a really cool mon in the current meta, mainly cause it actually threatens this aforementioned core lmao. Steelix definitely doesn't want to take a blizzard from this monster and Milotic doesn't take freeze-dry well with the spread it has. Assuming rocks are up (even if they aren't), this mon poses a huge threat.

252 SpA Vanilluxe Blizzard vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Steelix-Mega: 118-141 (33.3 - 39.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and hail damage
252 SpA Vanilluxe Freeze-Dry vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Milotic: 168-200 (42.6 - 50.7%) -- 94.5% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock, hail damage, and Leftovers recovery

(The damage adds up and steelix gets worn down pretty quickly)

Meloetta @ Electrium Z
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Focus Blast
- Psychic
- Thunderbolt

Melo takes max 24% from Milo (not confusing at all..) scald and OHKOs with +1 Gigavolt Havoc, if it spams haze then Tbolt until it's forced to recover.
From there Focus Blast does heavy damage to lix and 2HKOing even at +0 and is a roll to OHKO the more common adamant spread. Furthermore, Z Tbolt heavily threatens the SpDef Mandi that's often cored with these two (s/o to cyan in the RU cores thread). Modest lets you OHKO lix but it's not recommended as you get outsped by Gatr and Toise and a full HP lix is highly likely to still have Sturdy anyways.

+1 252 SpA Meloetta Gigavolt Havoc (175 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Milotic: 464-548 (117.7 - 139%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 252 SpA Meloetta Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Milotic: 240-284 (60.9 - 72%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Meloetta Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Milotic: 160-190 (40.6 - 48.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
(pretty good chance to win without Z move too)

+1 252 SpA Meloetta Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Steelix-Mega: 290-342 (81.9 - 96.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Meloetta Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Steelix-Mega: 192-228 (54.2 - 64.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+1 252 SpA Meloetta Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 220 SpD Steelix-Mega: 326-384 (92 - 108.4%) -- 50% chance to OHKO
4 Atk Steelix-Mega Heavy Slam (120 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Meloetta: 195-229 (57.1 - 67.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

+1 252 SpA Meloetta Gigavolt Havoc (175 BP) vs. 240 HP / 216+ SpD Mandibuzz: 432-510 (102.6 - 121.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Meloetta Gigavolt Havoc (175 BP) vs. 240 HP / 216+ SpD Mandibuzz: 290-342 (68.8 - 81.2%) -- 50% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery !!

Roserade @ Life Orb
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Leaf Storm
- Sludge Bomb
- Hidden Power Fire
- Sleep Powder

Roserade effortlessly switches into Milotic, even taking other variants' Ice Beam with some HP to spare. From there, it obviously OHKOes Milotic and uses Hidden Power Fire on a predicted Steelix switch for a safe 2HKO. Leaf Storm can even 2HKO Steelix after marginal chip damage. Keep in mind that Steelix's attacks do massive damage.
  • 252 SpA Life Orb Technician Roserade Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Steelix-Mega: 187-221 (52.8 - 62.4%)
  • 252 SpA Life Orb Roserade Leaf Storm over 2 turns vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Steelix-Mega: 299-356 (84.4 - 100.5%)
  • 0 SpA Milotic Ice Beam vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Roserade: 124-148 (47.5 - 56.7%)
However
  • 4 Atk Steelix-Mega Heavy Slam (120 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Roserade: 223-264 (85.4 - 101.1%)
  • 4 Atk Steelix-Mega Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Roserade: 186-220 (71.2 - 84.2%)

Hi, making a real post for once in a long while.

Rotom-Mow @ Grassium Z
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Defog
- Leaf Storm
- Volt Switch
- Will-O-Wisp

Rotom can switch into both Milotic and Mega Steelix with impunity, as it is immune to Earthquake, resists Heavy Slam and Scald, and even Scald burns don't bother it much. The only thing remotely threatening is Toxic from Steelix, but it won't want to stay in on a Leaf Storm or Bloom Doom, Milotic being in the same boat. Rotom-M can also threaten Steelix out with Will-O-Wisp, meaning it also gets a free Defog.

252 SpA Rotom-Mow Bloom Doom (195 BP) vs. 252 HP / 220 SpD Steelix-Mega: 231-273 (65.2 - 77.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Rotom-Mow Leaf Storm vs. 252 HP / 220 SpD Steelix-Mega: 154-183 (43.5 - 51.6%) -- 9.4% chance to 2HKO
252 SpA Rotom-Mow Bloom Doom (195 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Milotic: 452-534 (114.7 - 135.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Leftovers recovery
Possible damage amounts: (452, 458, 462, 468, 474, 480, 482, 488, 494, 500, 506, 510, 516, 522, 528, 534)
252 SpA Rotom-Mow Leaf Storm vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Milotic: 302-356 (76.6 - 90.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

MAH DAWG. Switches into Milo with total impunity and Mega Steelix takes 72 min from a Focus Blast so it risks taking a big chunk of damage if it ever tries to block the volt switch. Obviously Mega Steelix has to be put in range (not that difficult since a spike switch-in plus taking a dragon pulse puts in on range for the focus blast KO) but it is a massive threat to the core regardless. And it is a cool mon too!

This mon just comes in on either lix or milo, and taunts them to not let em recover/toxic, then proceed to whittle them down with scald and burn damage, hex > scald would do even better but would fail in beating salazzle. First spread allows Jelli to outspeed milo and keep a bit of bulk while second spread outpeed ada bewear.

Abomasnow @ Abomasite
Ability: Soundproof
EVs: 92 Atk / 252 SpA / 164 Spe
Rash Nature
- Blizzard
- Giga Drain
- Ice Shard
- Focus Blast

Big poppa is a huge threat because it can switch into Milotic reliably and force it out with Giga Drain. Steelix also hates switching into this Pokemon, as Blizzard + Hail damage is a lot to take. Abomasnow also destroys common Milotic + Mandibuzz + Steelix core so it's a great mon!!! :blobuwu:

Shaymin @ Life Orb
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Seed Flare
- Synthesis
- Earth Power
- Dazzling Gleam

Shaymin can switch into Milotic easily and threaten both with Seed Flare. Heavy Slam can 2HKO Shaymin, but Shaymin can try to heal up with Synthesis.

4 Atk Steelix-Mega Heavy Slam (120 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Shaymin: 157-186 (46 - 54.5%) -- 54.3% chance to 2HKO
252 SpA Life Orb Shaymin Seed Flare vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Steelix: 200-238 (56.4 - 67.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Araquanid @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Bubble
EVs: 248 HP / 212 Atk / 48 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Spider Web
- Toxic
- Liquidation
- Rest

Did you forget about him? Your old friend from middle sm is back again, as Chesnaught is officially out of favor, and fat balance has forgotten the need for spider counters other than Milotic as a catch-all. This thing does the same thing it always does, traps and toxic stalls bulky waters, while threatening the rest of the tier (Mega Steelix obviously included) with its ridiculously powerful Water-type STAB.

remember no reservations will be allowed from this point onwards

the second core you must break is no longer a defensive one; rather its one that breaks through each other's checks to sweep: Feraligatr and Cloyster!

Feraligatr @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Liquidation
- Crunch
- Superpower

Cloyster @ Normalium Z
Ability: Skill Link
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Shell Smash
- Icicle Spear
- Hydro Pump
- Explosion

cycles last 3 days, this cycle will last through february 9th.

Pyukumuku @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Recover
- Counter
- Toxic
- Soak

There really isn't a lot this core can do to break through Pyuku. Both Gatr and Cloyster obviously are most threatening through setup, while Pyuku's unaware takes care of that. As a bonus, its natural typing of water handles any STAB they'd want to attack with. Jolly LO Gatr can at best 4HKO Pyuku with Superpower, while naive-natured Cloyster using Z-Explosion does a pitiful 36-43%.

This core is very very difficult to hold down defensively since the whole of the 2 being run is to remove each other checks (or more specifically cloyster luring/removing or weakening gatr checks) so I doubt there are many that can reliably beat this on practical scenarios, however there is one thing that can surprisingly enough:

Whimsicott @ Pixie Plate
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- U-turn
- Grass Knot / Giga Drain
- Moonblast
- Encore

Since both of the members of the core are setup sweepers Whimsicott can be a notorious annoyance thanks to the prankster encore element. Of course Cloyster has to have used the z-move beforehand but if you have a Milotic or a Snorlax it is probably on their best interest to keep the z-move for said mons. As said, it is very difficult to beat this core practically since nobody is perfect enough to dont give windows of setup opportunities all the time but Whimsicott means they cant press their setup move without a conditioning (on Cloyster´s case) and can at worst 2hko both of the mons in the core so it is a notorious threat to them.

That's er, difficult to deal with traditionally considering how renowned it is to break down each other's checks, and especially with something more offensive in mind. So I went outside the box...

Toxicroak @ Poisonium Z
Ability: Dry Skin
EVs: 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Sludge Bomb
- Focus Blast
- Vacuum Wave
- Nasty Plot

I know Toxicroak, and especially the special set, has coverage issues and somewhat disappointing power. That said, it does check that core very well, preventing setup on Gatr - and beating that one set since no Ice Punch even after one DD - while being able to guarantee revenge Cloyster. The better part about it for me is that you don't need the setup at all for this, though using the z-move on Gatr if at full or thereabout is obviously safer:

- 252 SpA Toxicroak Acid Downpour (175 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Feraligatr: 253-298 (81.3 - 95.8%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
- 252 SpA Toxicroak Vacuum Wave vs. -1 0 HP / 0- SpD Cloyster: 312-368 (129.4 - 152.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Well, like Mr. Aldo and EviGaro said, the core's very difficult to deal with, and I'm not exactly a fan of this Pokemon in my nomination, but might as well give this a FIRST IMPRESSION of a Pokemon that might BUG the core. (Sorry)

Golisopod @ Choice Band
Ability: Emergency Exit
EVs: 168 HP / 252 Atk / 88 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Liquidation
- First Impression
- Leech Life
- Aqua Jet / Spikes

Thanks to Sheer Force preventing Emergency Exit from activating, Golisopod is able to become a solid check to the Feraligatr set. (Superpower, a non Sheer Force boosted move, doesn't do much to it) With a Choice Band First Impression, in most cases, it's able to revenge kill Cloyster if it has already set up with Shell Smash. Unfortunately, though, it can't switch in to Cloyster, as its moves could do a heavy amount of damage to it, and if it were to survive the attack, it would be forced out thanks to Emergency Exit.

Calcs:

+1 252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Crunch vs. 184 HP / 0 Def Golisopod: 142-168 (42.1 - 49.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

+1 252 Atk Life Orb Feraligatr Superpower vs. 184 HP / 0 Def Golisopod: 82-96 (24.3 - 28.4%) -- 98.6% chance to 4HKO

252+ Atk Choice Band Golisopod Leech Life vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Feraligatr: 210-247 (67.5 - 79.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ Atk Choice Band Golisopod First Impression vs. -1 0 HP / 0 Def Cloyster: 211-249 (87.5 - 103.3%) -- 25% chance to OHKO

252+ Atk Choice Band Golisopod First Impression vs. -1 0 HP / 0 Def Cloyster: 211-249 (87.5 - 103.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO after 1 layer of Spikes

Salazzle @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Corrosion
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fire Blast
- Sludge Wave
- Hidden Power Ice
- Toxic
Choice Scarf Salazzle outspeeds both +2 Cloyster and +1 Feraligatr. It OHKOes the former and does 52-62% to the latter. Since the two are so fast, this is about the best you can use in terms of non-priority revenge killing.

Shaymin @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Seed Flare
- Healing Wish
- Earth Power
- Hidden Power [Ice]

Scarf Shaymin can go hard into any Gatr set, especially ones lacking Ice Punch, and be able to outspeed and KO it regardless of which move it uses. Unfortunately it does a considerably poorer job checking Cloyster although Cloyster can't smash in Shaymin's face either so you should be ok as long as you can get Gatr to come in first (easier said than done ik but doable).

252 Atk Life Orb Feraligatr Superpower vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Shaymin: 147-173 (43.1 - 50.7%) -- 2.7% chance to 2HKO

• cycle 3 •

this cycle will centre around a more offensive core,

Moltres @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- Fire Blast
- U-turn
- Air Slash

Virizion @ Grassium Z
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Leaf Blade
- Close Combat
- Stone Edge

good luck and have fun !

Dragalge @ Choice Specs
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 204 HP / 252 SpA / 52 Spe
Modest Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Sludge Wave
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Focus Blast

dragalge can switch into any move from core thanks to its typing and can nuke with a specs boosted stab. hurricane can 2hko though.

+2 252 Atk Virizion Close Combat vs. 204 HP / 0 Def Dragalge: 166-196 (51.5 - 60.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 252 Atk Virizion Stone Edge vs. 204 HP / 0 Def Dragalge: 186-219 (57.7 - 68%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Adaptability Dragalge Sludge Wave vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Virizion: 448-528 (138.6 - 163.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Moltres Hurricane vs. 204 HP / 0 SpD Dragalge: 147-174 (45.6 - 54%) -- 45.7% chance to 2HKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Adaptability Dragalge Draco Meteor vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Moltres: 434-512 (135.2 - 159.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Aerodactyl @ Life Orb
Ability: Unnerve
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake
- Ice Fang
- Pursuit / Aerial Ace / Roost

Aerodactyl is a really big issue for this core. It obviously just ohkos Moltres and can threaten Virizon with Aerial Ace. Even if it lacks Aerial Ace, it forces Virizion out regardless
