Now, many of you have probably been watching Quinn's SCL fantasy league and wondered "wow! those teams at the top of the standings look excellent! I sure wish I could grow up and someday develop that level of ball knowledge and strategic sense!" However, even the wisest of us have to learn somewhere. You know zugubu royale, the RU main? Once upon a time,
they struggled to defeat even the young diddlydoo245, and now they have a trophy! Or perhaps you're a fan of SCL predictor and Shoguns bench whiz Heatranator, who once famously said "who's santu and why is LBN not starting here" about the SCL V Breakers. We all make judgments about the up-and-comers and watch them blow up in our faces.
So anyway I feel like the temperature of this SCL is heating up a bit and I want to remind everyone to choose kindness lest we recreate the mistakes of our past. here's my list of top 10 times Smogon user -Tsunami- prematurely declared a player unviable:
10. lax
9.
Jytcampbell
That's the hero of team Canada and of the SCL IV Dynamos, by the way!
8.
talah
Perhaps mild on its own; as far as takes go, but this belongs up high for the
doubling down that the entirety of team Greece is bad. talah's 27-21 in official games since then.
7.
Excal (and
here)
Excal would, eventually, have a deep Classic run in him, along with other DPP accomplishments. I advise you, next time you're worried that you might be prematurely judging a player, consider the EXCAL test:
E - ego; what would ego say about this player?
X - extreme; are the facts in front of me explicable with less absolute judgments?
C - certainty; should I be talking in sure terms about a player's ceiling who's only been on the site for two years?
A - animosity; am I making the site a better place?
L - luggage; do I perhaps have baggage that is leading me to such harsh judgments?
6.
Gefährlicher Random
double whammy here because there's also some mind gaming slander hidden in here. Felix in this very tournament would seemingly forget his place as a random on the site, beginning his first of nine official teamtours on the site without a negative record (which ended in SPL XVI). I have a soft spot for slander here towards players that eventually get Shake glaze
5.
Giannis Antetokommo-o
Forgive me if you think this doesn't belong on this list. I just found it funny that in someone ELSE's slander post there was an offhand line of "yeah they didn't beat anyone good look at all these players they're all bad" and one of them is Giannis, like three months after they joined Smogon. Giannis would make STour playoffs that year, which they have so far done 6 times in their career.
4.
Santu
Forgive me for not showing my work, which is just a bunch of subforum posts that are like "yeah guys I know santu has hype but I'm not impressed I think they're bad" over and over in 2019. Mild compared to the other posts in her, but needs to be on this list IMO because santu's probably the highest-ranked player on the all-time top 10 to get slandered. Remember, he won Slam less than a year after this post.
3.
Kebab mlml
Belongs up high as a reminder that you, too, can one day end up glazing the player you once slandered. You never want to end up in this position. See, I have to admit that my best prediction seasons have tended to be when I decide early on "yeah this is the worst player in the pool" and just pick against them every time even if they start winning, because chances are a few games are less indicative than prior track record. And there have been cases of those players who just kept winning so much that I had to start bolding them. It's humiliating...
2. bbeeaa (I'm not linking the quote because it contains foul language so I'll just post the screenshot)
And maybe Shake was right! This was 2015, after all. But the point of this post is NOT to say "oh haha look at someone who's wrong about everything." Rather, it's a reminder that no matter how certain you are of something, people can grow, outgrow your perceptions of what you thought they were capable of. And that thing that you were once certain of is now wrong. It's up to you to do what you will with that.
1.
zS
Much like the rest of this saga, this happened during qualifiers at WCOP 2020. Since that tournament, zS in 45-26 in official teamtour games with a pair of trophies along the way. In fact, only a month ago, Shake declared that zS is "
someone who actually DESERVES to be 31k" (in contrast to the currently 4-0 clean, who could potentially be an honourable mention on this list, honestly).
I bring this up to everyone to remind you to be humble. We're all young, even the old among us. No matter how much you know, that will become obsolete. Could you have guessed, long ago, that either Vulpix03 or Real FV13 would someday become Smogon Classic champions? You will not be fulfilled by knowing, you will be fulfilled by learning. You may be looking at the kids making their predicts in RU forum and thinking "wow, those noobs don't know anything at all", or watching BIG TONY 2014 outcook Shengineer and thinking "these zoomers won't stand a chance once they face a real threat like lax or Nat". You will be wrong a good number of times. Can you accept that and learn from it?
And if you are the target of Smogon forum slander, it is NOT over for you. You are NOT cooked. If you LOVE your POKEMON then they will persevere for you, and you can FINALLY get that crit you need to improve to 1-4. This website ALWAYS has room for more clean's.
