Tournament SCL VI- UU Discussion

:Exeggutor-Alola: mintwinter vs JustFranco :Melmetal:

Franco has delved a bit deeper into his bag of unorthodox tricks and has been doing just fine? His play hasn’t been as intriguing as it used to be but it is definitely still good enough to bat a little bit higher than what I believe mint is capable of doing. She had a free layup last week matchup wise and completely smoked it, yeah outside factors et cetera but also can’t ignore them unfortunately as much as I do want her to succeed. She is definitely better than what she displayed last week so looking forward to this one more than the others as a kind of litmus test to see how she fares against the more established players with a bit more length in their resumes. If there is any week where Franco will whip out stall again, it’s probably this one regardless of how she fared the last time she faced it. Just feels like the kind of matchup where one person will hedge their bets entirely on being able to be calm and collected over a longer string of turns than the other and he has more experience both piloting and building against the more conventional anti-stall tactics. She’ll probably bring more of the same, though. She doesn’t have much variation so I would hope that this changes as a spectator hoping for more interesting games…

:Mew: Punny vs Gilbert Arenas :Gible:

Punny… I haven’t been that impressed with how the Gible have operated in UU even if I am a longterm fan of Marcop as a player. I don’t recall who won the head to head last time they played each other, might’ve been Punny but not totally sure on if it was WCoP or SCL. Either way both are doing rather modestly and as a result it’ll be a bit closer than what I imagine most people would be comfortable with since obviously its SV UU PUNNY but yeah. Not much else to add, kind of the most boring matchup of the week.

:Gyarados: sky vs Sabella :Kingambit:

Two people who really do not have a limit on what they could bring -- should be an interesting one. Sabella is less varied, has the stronger sense in game by a bit, probably. sky has the edge in surprise factor. This game will probably be determined on preview more than any of the other ones so I cannot add much here.

:Falinks: Mossy Sandwich vs pdt :ninetales:

Normally, I would be bolding pdt with swiftness if he's paired up against anyone outside of the top 3~ players in this pool because of his experience in playing these high pressure SV games. However, the past couple of years in SCL haven't been the most inspiring compared to the standard he set in SCL III with his incredible 9-win performance which included a tiebreak win, too. He kinda rebounded in World Cup after a pretty disastrous SCL V which was nice to see but it seems like the pendulum swung back a bit here and he's been performing poorly again. This might be due to the current metagame not particularly meshing well with his "brand" of play as well as the kinds of matchups hes been getting all throughout the regular season; unsure which is which here, but yeah. I am really only bolding Mossy because pdt is on a downswing, not so much because I think he is better strictly. As mentioned in the above blurb, I feel like he really should have lost last week quite easily and it was almost entirely due to his opponent just forgetting how to play > him outplaying. This is a trend I have noticed with a lot of his gameplay, inexplicable mind control performances that would make even prime McMeghan or Tricking jealous... though that is a sign of greatness, in a way. I do think for what it is worth stylistically pdt matches up well into the extremely-safe, risk-averse and generally "well-insulated" play and prep that Mossy tends to rely on so I think this matchup is probably the most interesting to watch because this game could be pdt's most important to win, and for Mossy it'll be his first "established" UU name he's gotten to play ever? So how he does will also be pretty telling of where he stands on the pecking order. Good luck to both!

:Aegislash: etern vs spell :zapdos-galar:

DUCKY... have mercy. Saturday 5pm -6 OR 11pm -6, for those interested.

Week 5 games analysis:

:aegislash: eternally vs. regiboob :gible:

At preview we see eternally bring a bulky offense team, with gren+metagross+garde as offensive guys, backed up by skarm+donphan defensive core. Interesting bring from etern here, I like how the basc, garde, skarm and phan work together, with the latter being able to get spikes+sr and also spin, skarmory+garde being solid latios counterplay and scarf basc providing speed control, keldeo check and rapid spin immunity while also having solid coverage to hit a good portion of the tier. On the other side regiboob brings a balance with double regen. In the first few turns regiboobs hydrapple reveals av max spdef (or close to), taking only 50 from basc ice beam. Etern then manages to get the talonflame low (which i think regiboob should have avoided) with his gardevoir, which is great for him because both his skarmory and donphan cannot keep the hazards up vs the bird. Turn 18 regiboob goes hard talon on the skarmory's spikes, managing to get a roost in the following turn, meaning hes now way more ahead in the game as both the gardevoir and metagross on etern's side are burned, and the av apple+slowking+av slither wing looks basically unkillable now. On turn 22 etern reveals rock tomb skarmory, which does fucking zero to the talonflame, which I kinda liked at first because I thought that was max def talonflame when I saw it take 60%, but a quick calc shows that its the damage a common max hp talon would take, so not sure how useful that actually is. Nothing crazy happens for the rest of the game, regiboob gets rocks up and starts walling every pokemon on eterns side while dishing out damage with LO weavile and slither wing, which manages to kill the skarm with a tera fire flare blitz.
Overall I liked eternallys team more, however the lack of actual breaking power looks a bit concering, would've been cool to see the four I mentioned above+two different progress making options instead of gren and meta.

:exeggutor-alola: mintwinter vs. mossy sandwitch :falinks:

Mintwinter brings spellys team from last week, which as I already said I think is a really solid team. Mossy brings a rather standard balance team, with a volturn core formed by thund-I and slither wing, heatran for rocks, excadrill for spin and subcm keldeo. We see keldeo subbing turn one and then getting walled by alluring voice+haze milo, which also manages to burn slowking after the keldeo switches out. Turns 15 and 17 we see some really bad plays from mintwinter, body pressing the excadrill on the thundurus and then teraing clodsire on the excadrill, meaning she now has to play the game with a low health skarmory, a parad clodsire, no tera and no volt immune, which leads to a milotic sack later in the game. Later on mossy manages to kill the h-lilli with a nice tera fairy play on the cc and to beat the cm cress with his SD exca. from there the game is pretty much over as mossys slither wing can just cc the weavile to revenge kill it and beat the cress with exca. This honestly had me sobbing a little because when I opened the game I instantly tabbed out bc i didnt think mint could lose this matchup. Hopefully her performance will be better this week as I believe there might have been some factor that led her to play like this ( I think Ive read someone say that she was rly tired, idk).

:gyarados: sky vs. spellcaster :zapdos-galar:

dillon brings a weird team whose main focus is to win games with hlilli, supporting it with healing wish gardevoir. On the other side, spelly c brings mono loss to any good team with hazards+knock off (talonflame as the only defogger on stall, seriously?), which was also brought by garay week 3. On turn 20 we see talonflame do what it does best, aka nothing but hoping for a flame body burn, which luckily spelly gets. This forces sky to use hwish immediately to setup hlilli again. This does not end up going anywhere though as spelly gets another immediate burn on talon, proceeding to wall the rest of dillons team. To be completely honest, whether the flame body rng was relevant or not depends on the hlilli tera and hydrapple tera. If lilli was not poison/steel then spelly only needs one flame body, forcing the hwish and then handling the lilli w toxic on pex and stalling it out till poison kills it. If it actually was poison immune hlilli then it depends on if the apple was poison/fairy, meaning it could eat and kill back with earth power with a little chip. Overall not much to say about this, would have been cool to see how the game would have gone without those flame body burns.

:ninetales: pdt vs. sabella :kingambit:

Finally some cheese yessss. We see pdt bring spikes stack HO while sabella brings sun. At preview we can tell pdt has a terrible matchup, which leads to the game not being so engaging. The one interesting part was the initial turns, esp turn 3, as pdts jugulis hurricanes on the heatran switch. The following turn the jugulis uses dark pulse, popping the heatrans balloon. I wonder why this was not done on turn 3, as dark pulse dmg wouldve been nice on the ninetales and it would have popped the balloon guaranteed. Turns 9-10-11 we see pdts only chance at winning the game, setting up his SD scizor against sabellas donphan. However, the EQ damage shows that scizor is max hp, meaning it cannot be jolly and beat heatran and potentially sweep the game with tsteel BP. Overall I liked pdts team, just got a really bad matchup. I also liked sabellas sun take as I think double chloro is strong.

:basculegion-f: We see two basculegions being brought this week, which is interesting considering its a RU mon. I believe this mon is good in the current meta, as I was saying in the etern vs regiboob writeup it has rly good coverage and it can check keldeo. I think what makes it good but not amazing is that with a scarf its not too threatening, while without it its a little slow, with a typing that leaves it exposed to two of the best mons in the tier, being weavile and latios.

:ninetales: we see sun being used for the first time this tour, getting an amazing matchup into pdts HO team, showing that against the right opponents it can be a pretty annoying strategy to deal with.

:magnezone: :maushold: while its definitely cringe to comment my own game, I can share thoughts on what people brought vs me. I found this take to be pretty great.I liked how maushold was used as a mon to bait skarmory, making sure magnezone traps it to let the abusers behind do their thing. Interesting bring from franco.

Waiter, waiter!!!! More UU content!!!! Once again, we have Mintwinter and me for this one, with a new addition to the SCL UU review crew, Sky.
Sky and Mintwinter provided an amazing analysis of their games, with some secrets kept that we could bring up later???! Below lie the predictions, same as they were. Watch the video to learn more about our reasoning. Until next time!

:Mew: Punny vs spell :Zapdos-Galar:

Some big shakeups here, with ChrisPBacon returning to the starting lineup for the Terrors and Taka playing now in UU in place of Marcop for the Gibles.
GL to all players!

Idk watching UU Tube and basing my predictions on who my intuition thinks should win.

:Exeggutor-Alola: mintwinter vs JustFranco :Melmetal:
Reason: Stall is ass currently.
:Mew: Punny vs Gilbert Arenas :Gible:
Reason: Punny is the goat.
:Gyarados: sky vs Sabella :Kingambit:
Reason: I think sabella makes better teams.
:Falinks: Mossy Sandwich vs pdt :ninetales:
Reason: intuition
:Aegislash: etern vs spell :Zapdos-Galar:
Reason: idk this is a 50/50 for me
3/4 on my first ever predictions, motivated to post them for this week aswell.

:Falinks: Mossy Sandwhich vs ChrisPBacon :Gyarados:
(battle of the dishes :blobthinking:)

:Melmetal: JustFranco vs Taka :Gible:
(Taka Cooks on the builder, so does franco and im interested to watch this one live)

:Kingambit: Sabella vs etern :aegislash:
(I cant really say much about this match, can go either way)

:Mew: Punny vs spell :Zapdos-Galar:
(i'm ngl the performances by both these players are amazing, but I'll have to side with smell because my intuition says it)

:Ninetales: pdt vs Mintwinter :Exeggutor-Alola:

:Falinks: Mossy Sandwich vs ChrisPBacon :Gyarados:- Mossy has looked excellent thus far. Nothing too flashy in terms of team building just good solid standard stuff that he is more or less known for and has piloted these teams well. Chris while being a great player overall has looked honestly pretty green in terms of his play and tier knowledge. Personally i think sky should still be playing. He would have beaten me last week if not for the icy wind miss.
:Melmetal: JustFranco vs Taka :Gible:- While most people would just bold Franco I am going for the upset this week. I think Taka has a pretty good feel in terms of his knowledge of the tier and building. I am expecting something interesting and creative from him and i think itll be a very close game. Franco of course is exceptionally skilled and always has pretty unconventional builds that he pilots well. Of course i could also see him winning this game tooI just think taka is going to prepared for the incoming bullshit.
:Mew: Punny vs spell :Zapdos-Galar:- With a win this week the machines will still have a decent shot at playoffs so i still expect Punny to be trying. Last weeks misty terrain team was really cool from him and expect more interesting builds going forward. On top of that i think Punnys ceiling is a bit higher than spells in terms of plays so leaning with him. Spell has had great builds and team picks into his opponent thus far so i expect this to still be a close game but as Im sure spell knows prepping for punny is a nightmare. It is impossible to cover everything he uses from cheese to the turbo fatties so I am sure spell will be changing ideas 4-5 times before landing on something. Ultimately I think Punny will be the winner but if spell pulls an upset i would not be surprised.
:Ninetales: pdt vs Mintwinter :Exeggutor-Alola:- While i might not understand the genius of trailblaze tera grass life orb Weavile and despite him being 1-5 I am going to bold PDT this week. I think his play style and play making calls will be good into a more reserved playstyle like mints. Both of these players have a very definitive style/team brings that they usually stick to and don't deviate far from so I wonder if this is the week either of them branch out and use something different. I think if Mint does this while making sure hes good into PDT normal offense builds his chances of winning will go up significantly. Looking forward to this one quite a bit.

Good Luck to all hope the games are close and fun
