SP Shared Power

Here are some team-building ideas I came up with during the SP Tour. Obviously, these teams aren't polished yet and might not work well enough in their current state, but I think that with adjustments made by players who actually play the tier, they could work.

This is a long but here we go with a breakdown of the SP Occasional, takeaways, and overall thoughts on the meta after the fact.

For the tournament I prepped pretty heavily on breaking stall as I thought that would be the dominant archetype. Creating some teams specifically for breaking stall and bad against almost everything else. For example a toedscruel semi stall https://pokepast.es/9877ea28e45e66d2 I built this strictly for a stall matchup with the idea to beat stall teams using gargancal to prevent status and using enamorous-t as a breaker. I did not get to use this team but I found it pretty effective against gargancal teams and berry teams with toxic quickly over powering opponents. This was a terrible team versus anything remotely hyper offense. Another big thing I planned on was using known teams till I felt I was forced into using something out of the box. This ended up translating to a “crutch” team using Iron Valiant as a breaker. Crutch meaning the team I felt most comfortable playing, well rounded, and overpowering. https://pokepast.es/1e777f5ca8eff0fa By the end of the tournament clearly hyper offense was dominating with extremely strong breakers stacking 3 plus offensive abilities with 1 or 2 abusers leaving little room for bulky offense.
https://pokepast.es/1e777f5ca8eff0fa Game 1: Going into the tournament I thought stall was going to be a pretty major matchup. So I lead an Iron Val Breaker team that has done well against offense and stall. I have posted on this team before during my double dance team dump. I have drifted from double dance though with val not needing speed with the only special priority available in vacuum wave. This team was more of a feeler to see how my opponent would play. The game went very well with me not revealing Vals set at all and webs defiant priority backfiring with me having good enough priority to take kos and take priority hits with fluffy. This team ends up being the backbone of my tournament run with an insane record against so many team types. Highly suggest trying it out

https://pokepast.es/f7559def977522d7 Game 2: I just wanted to smash through so I loaded up dragon spam. Dragon spam is super consistent and extremely hard to beat without some team dedication. The game was going great for me till tera fairy lilligant-h arrived and hit plus 2 with victory dance. I legitimately thought I was going to lose this one and it came down to tera/read on acreus. Any tera there other than a resistance likely resulted in loss. This team I previously posted had arceus as tera poison which may have discouraged close combat. I also loaded a known team structure to avoid giving away any prep for later rounds. Dragon spam is dominant and demands some type of preparation for any team to be good. I do not think dragon spam is unbeatable but these teams lose and win in the team builder.
https://pokepast.es/b4b5e335926f6914 Game 1: I decided to lead with the same team as week 1. Again a really good team that I think helps me scout out what the opponent likes/wants to do. Lawliet loaded up a grassy glide spam which is a bit scary for me with ivy cudgel ogerpon out speeding the entire team other than scarf houndstone. If I lost either houndstone or giratina I would have had to rely on my priority being better. Thankfully never got to that point with houndstone taking the KO. This team is going to be re-occurring and was a true backbone for me.

https://pokepast.es/6928560c19efebb3 Game 2: I decided to take out a new team from the prep with aura sphere spam with Val and Terapagos. This game should have been a loss. I burned tera early to stop the salmence sweep with pagos living at 37%. In hindsight pagos likely lived but the chip damage from tera star storm was desperately needed. I messed up on my evs after copying the team to a different PC on clawstier who should have paced breloom and took the ko. Evs are fixed in the paste with a scarf out speeding any max speed base 90 mon. This leads to a very sweaty moment with val verse orgepon. Lawliet used a wood hammer which is affected by fluffy leading to val living and taking the KO with moon blast. I am 100% certain that an ivy cudgel wins that game. Lawliet thought after the game that I was max speed so they just picked a move thinking moon blast would ko anyways. Lesson: never give up on the last turn and double check evs before going into a match. Should have been a safer win but mistakes were made in the team builder.
Vnmmv has played against me more than any other SP player over the last year with a record of 60-82 with Vnmmv leading. I know Vnmmv is a better player so I decided to lean on my best teams. This was a terrible choice. As friends we discussed the meta game a lot, even during the tournament. Helping each other prep the previous weeks. Aura sphere Val/Pagos team came out of those discussions. Also sharing ev spreads, testing teams, and providing feedback to dial in teams. This match was terrible for me.

https://pokepast.es/170617989a7c32f2 Game 1: I decided to use a version of spem’s Darkrai dark pulse. Which is a really really good team. I made a few changes to suit my play style. Vnmmv leads a hard counter team that beats most of my teams that use a mix of priority and strong special attackers that nuke and take revenge kos with priority. Weak armor allowed him to outpace all my special attackers after getting hit by a priority move. Ting lu also decreased the effectiveness of my special attackers. Ogerpon was taken to nullify my favorite adaptability donor in basculegion and 1 of my 2 main priority users. With ceruledge there to deal with non scarf houndstone. After the matches we discussed some decisions. For example I thought I could calm mind on iron val and take out pagos even through tera shell as a non calm mind aura sphere should do about 70%. With the calm mind I thought val would live the star storm as it was not adaptability boosted. Going back now it was probably best to go darkrai first break the tera shell. This could have enabled Val to sweep with the only threat being ogerpon-wellspring using tera with that being a with ivy cudgel and the only way to guarantee the ko would have been sacking ceruledge but getting off a shadow sneak prior. Close match but clearly Vnmmv built the team to beat my tendencies.

https://pokepast.es/c91b0e72bba7d9eb Game 2: I wiped out the old reliable breaker val that I used in previous rounds. I needed something reliable and consistent. Vnmmv again runs a team that I was terrified of with sun and fire arceus. Not having a flash fire mon and running fluffy was backfiring. Thankfully I was able to leverage scarf porygon and houndstone to pick apart the team and use Lilligant's life orb and some priority to whittle it down to enable the vacuum wave clean up. Again this team pulled through in some of the worst match ups. This team is far from flashy but it uses what seems to be the consensus best abilities in the meta game: adaptability, download, vessel of ruin, and fluffy. Levitate is just really good, allowing you to only worry about stealth rocks for hazards and removing the earthquake threat that beats fluffy. Val is just an abuser of these abilities. This team is kind of the quintessential idea of shared power building a god like mon that sweeps.

https://pokepast.es/711e3452b761c42e Game 3: I decided to pick a favorite double dance team and that was a terrible choice. Pagos/Dialga/Arceus basically could all solo the team. I lost this one right off the bat. Running any other team here would have been more beneficial. Val team could at least pressure that team. I maybe should have pulled out something unconventional. The only take away for me was the red card turn 1. That will ruin some teams that rely on booster mons or the random snipe. I could see this being used more particularly verse leads that click flip turn or u turn. Paralysis is very under valued against fast offense and when it does proc you get a “free” turn. Not to mention halving speed. If you know the opponent has twave or a reliable way to spread the status condition it might be best to eat that move with a priority user. Double dance was a terrible choice throughout the tournament. Everybody was running hyper offense teams that nuke through anything not nearing stall like defenses. Double dance really likes bulky offense, and stall teams that do not hit like a freight train.

Overall this round was a learning experience that I need to break away from norms. Afterwards, we discussed the games. Vnmmv purposefully designed the teams to take away houndstone and basculegion-m as they are the backbone core of my teams. We also discussed what threw a wrench in his game plan and that was Iron Val, a pretty under rated mon imo, for the longest time with the only defensive check being a bulky poison type.Iron Val as a whole this tournament did extremely well and with a fairy/fighting combo it checks a lot of common threats like dragon spam particularly Dialga who gets wrecked by fighting stab and forced to use tera. It also matches up extremely well into ting lu with both stabs. Val also has an extremely rare special priority move in vacuum wave; this move alone allows for EV variation with the ability to not run a speed nature and take modest or adamant nature instead. It also is particularly good with download with great atk and spatk with a physical priority shadow sneak and close combat. A big reason I think it was overlooked for so long is due to flutter mane, which has obvious sun synergy, big spatk stat, and the fact flutter has ubers next to its name. Val is very under rated and should see more play as an ability abuser.
https://pokepast.es/17a1ff0b00a4ae82 Game 1: After the beat down from Vnmmv I wanted to come out swinging with a proven team type with a bit of flavor. This week I loaded up a heavy trick room team with solgaleo and dragon spam. Again turn 1 as in the previous week I get red carded turn 1 and instantly my solgaleo is on the field against clawister who could have easily sniped a mon with dragon pulse. Turn 2 I took a risky play that clawitzer had some speed investment and tera trick room. This was a bad idea. This just made claw the fastest mon in the game. Then I made a bad call going giratina hoping I could just snipe claw quickly with a draco meteor. Should have just gone regidrago right away and that would have saved giratina. Thankfully Diagla comes in after the claw is gone, sets up trick room and sweeps four mons. I was fully prepared for a tera fairy but none came or even a chance to switch to flutter. Thankfully basculegion comes with a choice band aqua jet to pick up the KO on deo. Even if flutter was the final mon I am pretty sure basculegion aqua jet still takes the KO barring a tera water flutter.

I want to highlight Solgaleo here as it was not great in this game but I want to highlight the impressive 100% win rate during the tournament and the flexibility in this mon. For example I am using a trick room, teleport, and morning sun solageleo allowing solgaleo to set a trick room with sheer bulk and teleport to a teammate that can not set trick room themselves like giratina-o or saving hp on dialga. It has special attacking potential with calm mind, flash cannon, psychic and a decent collection of special coverage. Sol just has a lot of set variety with the only thing missing is a physical setup move like swords dance, bulk up, or dragon dance. Any of those moves and Solgaleo would be an insane threat and would easily be broken. Full metal body is also a good ability.

https://pokepast.es/bf122ee6fa5eead6 Game 2: I decided to bring a non conventional electric terrain surge surfer team. I have posted about it in the past but after the previous week I needed to pull something odd out the box. I was too predictable the previous week. The game was going quite well to start and I was far from disappointed getting scarf on cinderace with the opponent having fluffy and no flash fire. My mistake was switching cinderace on latios. I should have sent in houndstone and sacked that but I kind of wanted priority for arceus. Then brought cinderace in and clicked a pyro ball which either took a ko on claw or lat or left acreus extremely low. I used tera too early on raichu and should have saved for bolt. This team is generally really good against hyper offense; it just runs into a wall against bulky calm mind users, Latios.

https://pokepast.es/c91b0e72bba7d9eb Game 3: I take the old reliable breaker Val team again. This is a repeating theme for the entire tournament. This team carried me a lot. Rarh2 decided to bring something wild, a weakness policy and weak armor team that was extremely interesting. This team was wild by turn 7, I am staring at a +4 atk, +5 spatk, and +4 speed poltergeist with tera normal with full hp and a sash. Dear lord. Thankfully vacuum wave clears that threat but dear lord that was scary but booster was burned. Thankfully later I am able to trick ting lu and burn it. Enabling a setup turn for iron valiant. This setup turn was completely needed. Without it tera star storm would have koed. Even still, tera star storm turn had a 9.8% chance to KO with a regular hit or a crit.
I knew going into this week I needed to beat the Darkrai team. Spem used it every week and hit top 5 at some point during the tournament on the ladder. By far the best Darkrai has ever performed in shared power in recent memory. A big factor here is speed as Spem ran scarf Dragapult alongside. From previous weeks testing on the ladder I knew I had a few teams with answers.

https://pokepast.es/82a04c3d3a236f84 Game 1: I decided to run something completely different than standard meta with liquid voice palkia. Sadly I had zero answers for tera blast ghost dragapult and it just nuked through my entire team. It likely was not a good switch to put houndstone in on golurk but I was hoping for a dynamic punch on the rotom. Clearly that was the wrong play and likely cost me the game as shadow sneak and aqua jet spam likely won that game with prim taking out lilligant, quack, and dragagle. I had the tools and just played it poorly. If I was to sack anything it should have been toxtricity. More about the team though, it is pretty fun. It does get wrecked by water absorb and some calm mind users. The team is meant to just nuke through before anything can respond and use pivot moves to get proper resits in with volt switch and flip turn. Because of the liquid voice Ting lu can not answer rotom or toxtricity well without fear of a big water nuke. I originally had drizzle on this team over basculegion but I was severely lacking priority. That team hit a bit harder with the rain boost. Palkia is extremely under rated with water dragon being an excellent typing for resists and still having a resist paired with fluffy. It does extremely well against iron crowns and solgaelo. I wanted to use liquid voice because it offered more boost opportunities with punk rock than other water moves surf/hyrdo pumps which only get boosted by rain and adaptability. Hyper voice also has the ability to bypass substitutes. The primirina life orb is also odd but I found the extra damage extremely useful to guarantee kos on some bulky mons like giratina, dialga, wo chien, ting lu and latios.

https://pokepast.es/64c032d8837c6cfb Game 2: I had a feeling Spem would try to close out the game with Darkrai. However I had the perfect team from some laddering and testing teams a few weeks prior. Spem and I played this exact matchup prior to this week and this is the reason the surge surfer team is back. Raichu was an mvp in that matchup during that ladder match and it was again in this matchup. The one big change up was tera fire dragapult and I was completely not ready for that. A fire blast there would likely have won the game with lando likely koing raging bolt. A recent change I made to this team is going back to thunderbolt on raging bolt over rising voltage levitate is just too common. I do not know what is about this team but I have always found success with pivot heavy teams that can easily rotate causing miss matches and wearing down teams allowing for a strong sweeper to clean up. Pivot heavy teams in SP do extremely well in my experience getting abilities on line quickly and allowing for chip damage with defensive rotation. This allows for powerful sweepers to clean up games.
https://pokepast.es/23b61c74b197e86c Game 3: Spem ran the same darkrai team again. I was really hoping this was going to be some other form of hyper offense as the breaker val team is not great into the darkrai team mainly because of a special dragapult preventing iron valiant from using vacuum wave. Sadly I got eliminated here but I was very happy with my games making it this far and at least taking my elimination to a game 3.
Down to brass tacks. Adaptability is clearly the best offensive ability in the tournament and it is not even close. With a 57% win rate with all mons using adaptability. I pulled out porygon-z and separated the win rates of download and adaptability. The difference is extremely small 56.25% with 16 games played using adaptability and 14 games played using download with 64.29% win rate. The biggest takeaway is that adaptability just wins games and the combination of download and adaptability is extremely hard to counter as it enables mixed attackers and is one of the few abilities that affect special attacks. This combination is clearly above the rest as download was always paired with adaptability. That combination allows for flexibility in move sets with strong mixed attackers and prevents teams from being walled by special walls or physical walls. This combination might be the strongest offensive core.
Dragons Maw and sheer force were extremely similar in performance during the tournament and were not deciding games with both being 1 game above a .500 record. Both very good abilities and sheer force being the most surprising but I think that came with a great team from Spem53 using darkrai. That team likely kept sheer force win rate as high as it was. The sample sizes are extremely small here but it is clear both are very good abilities. Hustle also falls in this category being 1 game off .500 but if fluffy was not in the meta I am pretty sure Hustle would be closer to adaptability in terms of win rate.
Sharpness, and mega launcher both under performed and in my opinion a bit surprising. Mega Launcher in particular saw a ton of usage for 2 reasons: it boosts decent moves to an insane level and stack well on other boosts not including adaptability. Dark pulse is affected by sheer force and dragon pulse is affected by dragons maw. Those two combinations made mega launcher usage quite high. Mega launcher saw a lot of usage from spem, and some dragons maw teams. I even ran it a couple of times with scrappy and aura sphere. I really like these 2 abilities as they have variety in the types they affect and I believe they are better than their record in the tournament.
Ting Lu is clearly a staple of good defense whether that is on offense or stall. Stall makes ting lu almost mandatory otherwise you are severely lacking against special attackers and it buys a turn or two for an offensive team that just needs to live just 1 hit. It also provides hazards, phasing and decent pivot that can do serious chip damage with ruinination. Just a great utility overall and fits almost every team. With 23 games and 56% win rate and 2 games above .500 tells a lot even though the sample size is low.
New abusers: The tournament clearly saw an increase in uncommon abusers like Darkrai, Iron Valiant, and deoxys. I expect them to see more play do to the recent successes. One thing they have in common though is a speed tier that can out pace acreus-dragon. This is a major factor in why these pokemon had so much success with the main meta speed threat being dragapult it becomes much easier to plan for 1 mon out speeding. Deo shares similar weaknesses to dragapult with dark and ghost however it offers a massive amount of coverage well out speeding dragapult but has less abilities to abuse(dragons maw). Iron Valiant fairy typing is extremely dominant versus dragons maw teams, val has good priority, and the option of boosting speed or attack depending if you want a breaker or not. Darkrai’s stab dark moves are extremely strong with how common ghosts are from trevanant, dragapult, giratiana, and houndstone. Dark is also a great option for neutral hits with arguably the 3rd best offensive typing to hit neutral behind dragon and ghost. With zero immunities, 3 not very effective types, and a very important neutrality to steel types. Darkrai also boasts very important coverage for each type that resists its stab with physics, ice beam, and sludge bomb.
Stall was not seen much in the tournament but clearly people came prepared with gholdengo breakers, nasty plot darkrai, and a host of other ideas solely to break stall teams. I do think stall is still very good and still extremely consistent. People just game planned for it a lot leading to it under performing as it faded away in the first half of the tournament.
https://pokepast.es/d93ab4528718c53f
A bulky offense team built around dot damage to whittle down opponents. Good against other bulky offenses and latios has decent setup opportunities.
https://pokepast.es/3eacf899ec025865
A semi stall toedscruel team built to wear down stall and break with enamorus. Not great against offensive teams. Enamorus-t has potential on defensive teams. 135 special stat is really strong and fairy types are rarely used outside of tera.
https://pokepast.es/e7af66bbb284473b
Special Solgaleo team as it offers slightly better bulk than iron crown offering a better opportunity to double dance. The team is decent. Not top tier but far from being bad. The goal here was to have the opponent game plan for a physical solgaleo sweep.
https://pokepast.es/37904c8ba7abc163
A hyper offense sharpness team built with two main abusers in iron boulder and crown allowing you to take out both physical and special walls. Azelf makes an appearance as the only pokemon with levitate and stab on a sharpness boosted move psycho cut. Azelf is criminally underrated with a great ability, great utility and offensive firepower. This is my favorite un-used team and I should have used it at some point.
Here are three teams I made after being eliminated and one had a concept used by Vnmmv in the final. That team idea is strictly his, this is just my version.
https://pokepast.es/fa126e1e31053891
Orgepon choice scarf with adamant nature out speeds any scarf user after tera and with moxie at +2, all but 4x resist will get ohkoed by ivy cudgel. Vnmmv ran a different ev spread but I am sure he will talk about that more.I think adamant would be more effective on ladder though as the damage is much higher. The team does have issues with iron defense/bulk up mons if they get set up early. The team really wants to get out ahead and steam roll.
https://pokepast.es/39cb60aa1a86363a
A team built to enable Jirachi sweeps with cosmic power and relying on meteor mash to spiral out of control. Team is fun but I think I need to dial in Jirachis evs a bit with it just designed to be as bulky as possible against physical and special. Not sure where I saw in the tournament maybe it was on the ladder but someone was using gargancal to really only reduce ghost damage and this was an extension of that thought process.
https://pokepast.es/cdd2e957fccc9395
Lastly this team was crafted from the usage and win rate list from the tournament. The main core is adaptability and download which had an insane win rate paired together. With so much mixed attacking opponents have an extremely hard time walling the team with download and moxie. With a special boost and a physical boost giratina is near impossible to answer with only one mon. Terapagos rounds out the team with rock polish, terastar storm, calm mind, and dark pulse. Even though pagos did ok in the tournament it felt the best here. As it provided some more bulk and an immunity to ghosts which the team was extremely weak to and an option to absorb strong dark type attacks. With so many ghost types the main weakness of fighting is fairly mute. Fun fact terastar storm can be physical with tera stellar and a higher attack stat. Overall strategy here is mixed attacking potential that eliminates any potential walls for physical sweepers. For example Giratina-o can nuke bulk up groudon with draco meteor and then continue fighting with poltergeist and shadow sneak. Basulegion-f paired best with the mixed attacking as it has a more balanced stat spread. Even porygon-z can make use of moxie with tera blast; this has paid off against steel and rock spam teams. This mixed attacking approach prevents calm mind and bulk up sweepers from dominating games and lessens the need for phasing. This team does lack hazards however with plenty of priority this downside is mitigated. The main core however quack, hound, giratina-o, download, and some adaptability users are the key here. I had some success with solgaleo mixed, iron valiant mixed, and darkrai sucker punch. That 5 man core can likely translate to a lot of different abusers like arceus, ho-oh, dialga, and palkia. This core took me on a nice ladder run from 1375 to 1506 topping the ladder.

I can't wait to see other peoples posts but this one took a bit of time. Also not very flashy but images break on me all the time.

Occasional team dump! I lost my cookies several times during the tournament, which was very cool and helpful, so some of these are re-creations. The EVs and unrevealed moves may be slightly off.

All in all, I tried to bring as much offense as possible. In a one-off environment like this, offense is much harder to scout. An individual bulky team is probably more consistent than an individual offense, but cumulatively, the offensive space is much wider. I think my reputation is generally as a bulkier builder, like Fluffy/Heatran/Gira/Ting-Lu style cores. I wanted to avoid getting scouted and picked off by breakers like Iron Valiant or Urshifu that are very hard to handle with those more balanced teams.

Bro trying not to take the idea. You were the one who had the idea of choice scarf ogerpon. I just came up with the ev spread. Have to use evs to their max. I just did not want steal any thunder on that idea for ogerpon.
