OU SM OU - Teambuilding Competition : October 2023 Revival (Week 1: Seismitoad on post #290)

M-Gyarados Lele and Kommo-o core

click on the team

Mega-Gyarados has had a hard time lately but I think it is worth a shot, especially when paired with Specs Tapu-lele. As you can guess, this team is centered around pushing Tapu Lele at its limits, softening the opposition with its sheer power, enabling Gyarados to finish the battle after a dragon dance. Kommo-o is a great pick with Tapu-lele, improving the matchup against steel types and having a ton of utility with stealth rocks. Obviously, AV Magearna protects the team from powerful special attackers such as Ash Greninja and psychic types (it is slower than celesteela, therefore, absorbing leech seed). Tornadus is a great pivot improving the Lopunny and kartana matchup, as well as helping with defog, u-turn and knock-off. Landorus is the scarfer of the team allowing some speed-control and counterplays against Tapu-Koko and Medicham.
sorry for my English

:tapu-lele::magnezone::kartana::toxapex::gliscor::tyranitar-mega:

Do you like clicking Choice Specs Psychic? Do you hate dealing with annoying Psychic switch-ins, but do you also hate having to deal with 50-50s when it comes to pivoting into your Magnezone? Well, do I have the team for you.

A la the old days of Dugtrio being the tier, I designed a team around Eject Button Toxapex to give Magnezone ample trapping and breaking opportunities without forcing you to think about the nuances of 50-50s, letting Tapu Lele's otherwise asinine wallbreaking abilities shine like little else. Much like how Dugtrio fodder tended to be dissuaded by Toxapex, many bulky Steel-types such as Mega Scizor, Celesteela, and Skarmory all are inconvenienced by Toxapex just enough to where pivoting into it early on, more often than not, secures a clean trap as you pivot into one of their moves, even pivoting ones. Since Toxapex is such a strong, general-purpose pivot and damage sponge, it makes for a great mid-ground pivot that secures Magnezone traps, either by forcing critical damage ranges against things like Magearna or outright eliminating the aforementioned Steel-type targets. This gives you much more leeway to use Tapu Lele's STABs, and you don't have to think too much about your coverage or midgrounds unless in a pinch, since all you have to do is pivot into Toxapex, which covers every option: potential doubles, attempts to pivot, or outright damage. Toxapex itself is designed to take a +2 Knock Off from Mega Mawile after Stealth Rock, with the rest put into special bulk to improve the Ash Greninja matchup.

Teammates:

:magnezone:
Magnezone is the classic Electrium-Z set that is designed to work around Celesteela Leech Seed stalling. Substitute from my testing is fine against it, but you generally do not need it; Volt Switch I've found is generally more consistent as a way to pick up the pace against Tangrowth cores and to help give Tapu Lele and Kartana wallbreaking opportunities.

:kartana:
Choice Scarf Kartana is a classic set that also greatly benefits from Magnezone's trapping abilities. Not only does it provide the team with great speed control, but it is a superb cleaner and revenge killing option, the latter of which the team otherwise lacks.

:gliscor:
Gliscor is a bulky, versatile win condition able to pick up the slack defensively early on in the game when Toxapex wants to preserve its Eject Button, being able to pivot into an absurd amount of attacks. In the lategame, it is a superb setup win condition, and it similarly benefits from the trapping support that Magnezone provides.

:tyranitar-mega:
In addition to being the team's Stealth Rock setter, it provides the team with a desperately needed Ghost-type, Dark-type, and Psychic-type answer as well as a general purpose special tank that is able to keep up the pressure with its strong coverage options. Access to a nuclear Pursuit makes it a good pairing with Tapu Lele and Kartana and another beneficiary of Toxapex, capable of trapping things like Mega Latias and Latios and having the ability to force damage on switch-outs.

:greninja::zapdos::tapu-lele::heatran::tangrowth::garchomp:

Team is pretty simple, has been built by like 5 people in the past i'm sure but fuck it. I dont make pretty posts so heres ur warning

Members

:greninja: Master of lures, pretty nice side-breaker too, you obliterate loads of stuff that generally think they can stay in on you for at least one turn or two, to scout in the case of SpDef Pex, or to just force it out with Fini -- really rewards playing straight and clicking whats behind you rather than whats in front of you except like the pex mu ig. Sets spikes relatively well ofc, which just adds more pressure and generally helps lele and chomp do their bit more reliably. Overall solid mon, though this is kind of walled by Heatran but ig that saves itself a bit since most Heatran players dont stay in on Gren regardless of if it is Ash or not cuz of ground/water-z.

:zapdos: Now, admittedly, Zapdos has to deal with a ton for this team. Lop and Kartana are a bitch mainly but I shifted the EVs a bit to help. Doesnt hit 254 speed anymore but with the partners I paired it with, shouldnt be too much of an issue + Kartana and Lopunny are much much easier for the squad to handle now. Other than that, pretty standard stuff -- Heat Wave for Msciz and Ferro, HP Ice for Lando and Gliscor and Discharge to hit ton of the birds + Fini (Though this doesn't matter much, given the protgren and tangrowth).

:tapu-lele: Star of this team, broken pokemon honestly. As the primary source of speed control, Tapu Lele makes swift work of nearly every single semi/offensive threat in the tier, especially Gren and Lop/Kart which ofc can get a bit out of hand when the tools to beat them just dont work/haxxed out of working, which does happen sadly. its really unremarkable you just click your stabs + other moves situationally, you can make it modest if you want since idt timid offers much in the way of speed tiers that are relevant but idrc atm.

:Heatran: Steel of the team, your primary rocker which could come as a bit of a surprise to those viewing this because this seems like it should be any of the other Heatran sets since I have Garchomp, but no, this is the rocker. It's reliable as all hell, gets them up consistently vs most stuff and beats many of the foggers too besides like fini which is already overprepped for enough w this lol. Between this + AV Tang you should be able to handle anything the tier throws at you specially, at least enough to where Gren/Scarf lele can proficiently revenge/scare off.

:tangrowth: Tang does a lot of stuff here, checks Gren (Not the worlds best check but who cares u have scarf lele utilise it if you have to play that way) enough to this teams liking, knock off is an annoying ass move for stuff like Celes, Koko, Gren, Fini (If it's trying to fish for pulse flinches). Hell, if you're greedy enough and at a good health to do so, you can Knock Specs Lele to cripple it for good damage and ensure it can't beat Heatran reliably. HP Ice can be removed for anything but like, fourth move can possibly be like Leech Seed??? None of the other lasts really help the team a bunch, so I guess this is where I say ''Get creative'' since 4th move doesnt matter a whole bunch.

and lastly,

:Garchomp: This is an odd one, SD Sub Drag-Z Chomp has been one of my favourite things to use in both SM OU and National Dex so it just felt right to include it here, Sub can catch a lot of people by surprise and it lets your Garchomp get stupid amounts of mileage in situations where it shouldnt. It just subs and sets up on a nice portion of the tier, if you can pull it off, this pulls its own weight immensely. Even if you never click Substitute, drag-z chomper is still a hard hitter, especially since we have a huge amount of fairy + steel cplay in general, makes it very manageable and fun to use!

Now that is the team, now you may look at this and go ''Dark/Ghost resist Greninja epic'' but the team is really cohesive in the way it deals with a majority of the threats that, on paper, should immediately 6-0.

Yo, here is another team: Mega Charizard Y & Tapu Lele + Groundium Z Hydreigon

:sm/charizard-mega-y: :sm/tapu lele: :sm/hydreigon: :sm/landorus-therian: :sm/magearna: :sm/greninja:

The idea behind this team is simple - to break with Charizard-Y & Choice Specs Tapu Lele, a tried and true core. To this end we run groundium Z hydreigon to remove toxapex for Charizard Y, and Magearna / Alolan-Muk for Tapu Lele. Hydreigon is also nice in that it checks heatran and ash gren, which is usually what the last mon of the lando + mage trio accomplishes - speaking of which, they are our defensive pivots (did u really need an explanation for that?). Greninja is protein scarf because we need speed control, and as this is a charizard-y team with a focus on hazard removal, we are not running spikes and instead can run the full compliment of beam/slide/gunk/uturn.

Charizard y is also 4 attacks because its heat and i stole it from the user 'the best team 5005' after playing them on ladder; you can run roost if u r weak :psygrump:.

Katy's team wins! Onto Round 3!

Week 3

We know him, we love him, some of us may hate him but that is your own personal opinion and you are allowed to have that! Landorus-T is incredibly versatile. It can function as an effective pivot thanks to its access to Intimidate and U-turn, whether that be an offensive pivot that takes advantage of its sky-high Attack stat or a bulky one that makes use of its access to Stealth Rock and useful set of resistances. It can also function as a potent wallbreaker thanks to its access to Swords Dance and its dangerous STAB combination in conjunction with Z-Moves. No matter how you put it, Landorus is one of, if not the best Pokemon in the USUM Metagame, so lets see how you utilise this lion! 5 days to submit!

Swords Dance Mega Gallade + Firium Z Heatran Bulky Offense
feat. Punishment Landorus-T

:landorus-Therian: :heatran: :tornadus-therian: :tangrowth: :gallade-mega: :tapu fini:

Pokepaste: https://pokepast.es/d13c99d4c04ec9d6

Explanation: This team is built with Punishment Landorus-T to counteract Reuniclus, Mega Latias, and Mega Latios, and it can threaten these Pokemon really well in that process. It can also deal hefty damage to other Psychic-types with it. Landorus-T is Choice Scarf to have some Speed control on this team and to revengekill weakened Pokemon with ease. Heatran has Stealth Rock + Toxic + Earth Power and also Magma Storm, which is equipped with a Firium Z to dish out a hefty chunk of damage onto non-fire resists. Tornadus-T is the Defogger for this team and can pivot easily, it is able to check the likes of Tapu Bulu, Kartana, and opposing Tangrowth. Tangrowth is equipped with the Assault Vest to have a secondary check to Tapu Lele, Ash Greninja, Mega Alakazam, and Tapu Koko. With Rock Slide in its moveset its able to lure in Volcarona, which this team really appreciates. The damage output is the following, allowing a clean OHKO on this threatening bug: 0 Atk Tangrowth Rock Slide vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Volcarona: 308-364 (99 - 117%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO. Tangrowth is also still able to check Mega Tyranitar and Excadrill alongside Landorus-T. Mega Gallade and Tapu Fini work very well together as a core, as Tapu Fini allow with Misty Terrain, that Mega Gallade can't get statused, the same mention goes to the aforementioned Tangrowth, so both keep their offensive presence and longevity, respectively. Tapu Fini is Natures Madness to properly weaken Pokemon for this dangerous team.

Gravity team lando
:sm/landorus-therian::sm/cresselia::sm/tornadus-therian::sm/forretress::sm/greninja-ash::sm/chansey:

This team revolves around Gravity. It's a difficult strategy, forcing us to play with a small pool of pokemon. But hey! it's fun to use!
Landorus is offensive and has a Z ground. With Gravity, Landorus has very few switch-ins and after a swords dance (and hopefully rock polish) it becomes a deadly sweeper. Its partner in crime is cresselia of course, placing gravity and protecting the team from opposing ground attack with its bulk and ice beam. Moreover, as you know, gravity multiplies accuracy by 1.67, giving inaccurate moves a new breath. Tornadus is especially useful with landorus, getting rid of grass types.
Another broken strategy with gravity is hazards damage and particularly spikes/toxic spikes damage. Forretress was a mon I wanted to use for a long time, and here is the time he was waiting for. It can place rocks and toxic spikes, gravity for tornadus and landorus, as well as giving hazard control. Spikes are provided by Greninja, abusing both gravity's effects with hydropump. Finally, chansey completes the team as the special sponge and is the last gravity setter.

:sm/hoopa-unbound: :sm/lopunny-mega: :sm/landorus-therian: :sm/magearna: :sm/greninja-ash: :sm/rotom-wash:

This team utilises the extreme power of Banded Hoopa U, especially when paired with solid speed control like Mega Lopunny. Mega Lop is HWish to provide Hoopa with an extra life, as well as have a last ditch opportunity to prevent the team from being overrun in the long term. LandoMagRotom is the standard defensive core, with Water Z washtom to bop threats like Gliscor, as well as check Weavile. AGren formes a terrifying darkspam core together with Hoopa U, appreciating wearing down Dark resists like Tapu Fini as well as potentially removing Toxapex, and taking advantage of stuff like Chansey which it lures in.
