Smash Bros DLC Reveal Predictions

Well then.

  1. Shulk's legacy of "let's keep adding characters with absurd melee range" continues.
  2. I really hope that pin move can be angled downward.

I know as a Fire Emblem fan and as a Pokemon fan, it can be really frustrating seeing a focus on just the most recognizable entry in a series when there are so many good characters in other installments. Is this the same way, or is the game in question that far ahead in the community as well?

The worst part is that if this were released back in Smash 4, I easily would have bought it and enjoyed myself. Just like I would have bought Joker, Hero, Banjo, Byleth, Min Min, and Steve (Terry is excluded because I never bought Ryu during Smash 4's time). But by now I'm so tied to the idea that a Smash inclusion is the best bet for reviving some of my favourite game series that nearly everything else is seen as an obstruction. There's what, 80+ characters, and all I can think to do is play my one Mii costume because it's the closest thing I've got to something moving forward after 8+ years of nothing. I haven't found a good enough reason to play Smash since the Sans costume came out and I felt I needed to show what a real Gunner main stood for, and I don't like this situation.

I without a doubt have the strongest emotional attachment to the King K Rool and Banjo reveals since I've wanted them in since I was a kid. That said, I think without that bias the Seph reveal is the best smash reveal trailer we've ever had.

Something about hearing that music come on, even as someone who's never played a Final Fantasy game, just sent me in this amalgam of disbelief and excitement that thrusted me back into a state of being 14 again talking to people about their pie in the sky wild ass brawl hopes. It was lightning speed teleportation into the "something I want I don't know I want" part of my brain. As someone who's gotten all of their wishlist characters, this kind of sensation is all I really ask from smash reveals anymore. It hit a little like that for steve, but this is just a huge rush after the thorough whelming of the byleth and min min trailers.

Then, on top of the normal gameplay display, it just starts doing wheelies and throws in an extra full entire trailers worth of money incinerating CGI just to play with Seph and Cloud. We get shots of Greninja and Mewtwo looking just amazing. Mario plays us for fake out of the year. God, it's all just SO good.

Dredging up the thread because I'm surprised at my reaction to the presentation. I am genuinely...

disappointed. Not in the "Oh it's not here for me" sense the way I was with Ryu, Terry, Joker, and Steve, not in the "man I wish it was X" sense like nearly all the other Ultimate DLC, I am disapointed in the moveset itself. Now, I know pretty much nothing about FF7 specifically, but I've seen Sephiroth's fights in Kingdom Hearts and am familiar with at least a few other JRPG main villains. I was not expecting "sword big" to be 80% of the moveset for a guy whose (as far as I gathered) big deal in-story is a feat of spellcasting. I'm almost glad that Isaac isn't in yet, because one of the last things Golden Sun needs is to be known for a generic anime swordsman. I'm not usually a fan of that argument (see: Isaac supporter), but it's going to be hard to avoid when Sephi honestly looks more Marth-like than three Fire Emblem protagonists.

Edit: oh right, forgot the mii costumes. Not a fan of the overemphasis on one game in a big series, and I remeber thinking "wait, that's it? This seems too lacking"

Edit 2: Yes, a boss rush would be great, but only if we can use what characters we want for it.
