Welcome to the first edition of Smogon Masters! This is a Swiss bracket, Bo3 tournament with each set consisting of ORAS OU, SM OU, and SS OU. Players will decide which metagame to play first, then the loser picks a different generation for the following game. If both players cannot agree on a metagame to play first, each round will have a default generation randomized at the start of each round. After several rounds of the swiss bracket, a top cut according to record and resistance will be created and a Bo3 single elimination tournament will determine who wins Smogon Masters and the trophy

The first edition of Smogon Masters will be hosted by Finchinator!

Signups will commence on Sunday, September 17th. We will use this thread to communicate any important updates regarding this tournament.

Round 3 will be posted mid-late morning GMT-4 on Monday. We are working out some things.

Please ignore initial threads/pings/contact from midnight-1am GMT-4 on Monday. The new pairings will be used only, not the ones that are now deleted. I personally blame Google and their API, but excuses do not matter: you guys want the round and it will be up within the morning.

Thanks for your patience and thanks to our awesome team for working through this -- they know more than I do and it would not be possible without their efforts.

Of note:

A number of players have indicated that they have dropped. These players will remain in the brackets until they accrue three losses. This is to ensure that their opponents they did play before dropping do not lose their opponent's resistance scores, as well as ensuring smoothness of the tournament operation by not needing to substitute out names in the back-end with individualized Byes. We do not apologize for the inconvenience that two more pings (the tour thread and your opp messaging you once for you to tell the to take the win) on a Sunday night causes the people who chose to sign up for a tournament and then decided to not see it through for completion.

Here is a barebones sheet to provide folks information on their placing and resistance, to help people be aware of their potential chances of needing to play in the play-ins. After Round 8 resolves, another sheet will be added to the document with rankings updated for Round 8 results. Included in the sheet is some descriptive comments to give people a better idea of what they are looking at, since the only hidden sheet was a manual duplication checker for hosts when fixing errors between rounds. I literally just copied the sheet from what we've been using for data.

If you want to know your current resistance and general placing, use CTRL+F to find your Smogon username on the Data tab. The left section will give detailed information on your run, and the right section will do a direct ranking comparison. Remember, these values will change as a result of R8's conclusion, and an additional sheet will be added with the updated values. Play-ins will be determined on the values with R9's conclusion included, and cannot be provided until after play-ins begin.

edit: Rankings updated for Round 8 results is present on the sheet. The rest of the sheet will remain untouched.

edit2: This is the final sheet. Be aware that the 8-0 Bo3 is not reflected as discussed with hosts and TDs. This is directly copied from the host sheet, and does not contain the ease of information notes the barebones sheet above does.

RE: Game order,

The better seed in each pairing will pick the first tier from here on out, including in the play-in games and the first round of the playoffs. From there, the loser of game 1 decides the game 2 tier. This is in accordance with precedent across various other Smogon official tournaments and approved by my co-hosts and a few TDs.

As an example:

[60] PikachuZappyZap vs the pharoah [69] (to play vs Seed 5) -- in this play-in series, PikachuZappyZap would pick the first tier and then whoever loses that would pick the second, leaving game 3 (if applicable) to be whatever is leftover.
