Smogon: Why you came here and why you stayed

I came here by chance, I was trying to do some research on a certain pokemon. Google linked me here.

I've stayed because pokemon is win. This site exemplifies that.

I actually didn't wanted to come....I used to be on serebii, and only use smogon for the tier list, then after about 1 month of being signed on the forums and complaining about how bad it is, the wifi forum atracted me.

VashttheStampede introduced me to it. Why I stayed? Hmm. I like the way people treat each other. It's a fair mix of Respect and abuse xD

I found Smogon because I saw one person on youtube reffering to your teir list, So I checked out the website and found many good Ideas for the Pokemon i was planning on using then later I decided that i would join to become a tutee of the tutor program so i could be part of the Smogon Community.

I'll keep this short.
I found smogon because I wanted to have the best pokemon team that I could get so I can battle people online.
After losing a lot I found out, in google, about IVs and EVs and all that good stuff.
So I thought I could learn here after a random google search :)

What keeps me here is that I still haven't learned all of that xD

well i start playing pokemon when the games first came out, was a big hit cause of the anime that was here where i live. i played from every gen. atleast 1 game but never really got good in to it till 3rd gen(go go Groundon)

what brought me here is i was looking for more info about competitive pokemon and the first time you'll find is this. why i stayed is i still think that i can learn the most here to get myself in the competitive pokemon

I got into Pokemon during the first generation. I had never really thought about it, just always assumed it was some fad (we had just learned the word in school).

One day at a bookstore, I saw a massive poster with miniature pictures of every Pokemon (at least, then it was every Pokemon). The images and names looked and sounded exotic and mystical to me and I knew I had to have it.

Other things pushed me along the way: my parents buying my brother and myself Pokemon cards, and especially a Nintendo 64 game called Pokemon Stadium. I cherished that game. That's where I learned about types and moves and how to play. I'm surprised I could have grasped that back then - I forget how old I was then, maybe 8-10? I'm 16 now...2010...eh, I don't know.

I only played with the rental Pokemon the game gave you, for some reason - I guess I didn't like the Game Boy games, then. They weren't too good - that was my assumption. I associated the Pokemon with their moves - I didn't read or really care about the stats. At all. I just battled and battled, and I was having a great time.

I remember playing with my older brother, debating on what the move Dream Eater did ("I don't understand, it never seems to work!"), talking about Counter with friends ("Counter never hits. But when it does, it's GOOD") and using Mega Drain (I think from a Vileplume) on Cloyster, my brother's favorite Pokemon, causing him to run to Mom, in tears, shouting, "HE FAINTED MY CLOYSTER! HE FAINTED MY CLOYSTER!"

I discovered Smogon a few years ago, I believe, when I was looking up Pokemon sites. That's when I heard about all these technical terms which seemed like jargon at the time but are now integral parts of a team. I joined for one simple reason, to be more skillful at Pokemon against real people. I sincerely hope I can do this.

I'm sorry this post was so long; for as long as I can remember I've been a fan of Pokemon and I enjoyed the chance to think back on what happened to bring me into it. Why have I stayed? Because I'm STILL a fan of Pokemon and I think competitive battling will be much fun for me and my friends.

i got into pokemon when i was in like, first grade, but i got lost from it before third generation (about 5th grade)
but then my friend got me back into it 2 summers ago, and referred me to competitive battling
yea

got into pokemon when Stadium 2 came out, I loved ho-oh.
Bought LG when it came out and never stopped playing after that.
Found smogon after I joined a Pokemon forum in 2007(wish it was still alive) and I've been coming here ever since just to read up on strategies and articles but never made an account until a few months ago when I got interested in the Battling 101 program.

PS: I didn't know your post count could go down... -_-

I just joined and thought this would be a good way to introduce myself...

How I got into Pokemon: When I was about 7, I found R/S/E at the store and thought it looked cool. I bought it and loved it, but I couldn't figure out how to get to the island where the 2nd gym was! So I just started the game over and over each time I got to that point. Eventually my friend helped me and I quickly beat the game. I went back and played Blue and Silver, and then lost interest in Pokemon. I got back into it at the release of Platinum.

How I found Smogon: On Gamefaqs, I was looking around and found several FAQs on EV training and competitive movesets. I found a lot of references to Smogon, and decided to check it out. I've been lurking here ever since, and just registered to join the community.

Why I stayed: The community is much better here than Gamefaqs, there's tons of help for someone that wants to improve their competitive battling, and I love Pokemon.

When I started Pokemon: Many moons ago, when I was a wee lad (around 5 or 6) the family was preparing to do Ye Olde Christmas shopping. My mom, not trying in anyway to surprise me, made it blatantly obvious that she was going to get me a Game Boy Color for Christmas. She called me into her room and asked me what I'd prefer to get for it: The Wild Thornberrys or Pokemon Silver. I wasn't a fan of the Thornberry cartoon much, so I asked for Silver. Christmas came around, I got my GBC and Pokemon Silver, and I've never been the same.
How I found Smogon: After a few years, I sort of lost my love of Pokemon. The show became more annoying than exciting (although that may just be my growing up) and I stopped playing after my GBC and Silver were stolen from my burning house. I had completely forgotten about Pokemon until I went to a friend's birthday party/sleepover. We kicked off the party with Pokemon Colosseum match using the GBA games. I didn't have a GBA, so my friends lent me a GBA and Fire Red. I thought the feature was fairly nifty and tried my best, but since I had only played up to Gen II at the time I lost. They gave me a copy of Ruby and the GBA and I played them, only to discover that I absolutely hated the game. No day/night? No 2 regions to explore? Growing up on G/S/C deeply twisted my view of what I thought all Pokemon games should be. I found myself in love with Colosseum, though, and I wanted to play more, except with more victories, of course. A few years later I met another friend around the time D/P came out and he told me about this 'foreign concept' known as Effort Values and the Serebii site. I browsed Serebii and of course they were extensively covering D/P, anticipating its American release. I found out that it was going to have Day/Night, tons of different features and Wi-Fi, and my love of Pokemon was rekindled. Slowly I delved into the 'Dark Arts' of Pokemon, looking up IVs/EVs/Natures. I became enthralled with all these (more or less) hidden features that had been included in the game and started making use of them. In a D/P rematch with the two friends I had played Colosseum with years before, my Pokemon were substantially more powerful, but I still lost. I learned it wasn't enough to just train Effort Values and use the right Natures. I needed to make a team with perfect synergy if I ever wanted to win. The friend who introduced me to EVs/IVs/Natures told me about Smogon and I perused it, downloading Shoddy Battle, formulating a decent enough team and winning a few battles. Using Shoddy Battle, I realized that there were thousands of other people who knew about EVs and IVs and I would have to try even harder. I played around with my team, won more battles, but never bothered to sign up to the site that had changed my view of Pokemon so much! I read about Battling 101 and, since I always do best with formal training, decided to sign up...today.
Why I am staying: Aside from my desire to win, it's nice to actually see people better than me. Victory isn't as important to me as learning is. I'm sort of in limbo between competitive and non competitive Pokemon. I'm the best of all of my friends who don't know about the deeper mechanics of Pokemon, but definitely on the lower end of the competitive scale with you guys who have been doing this for years. Beating my weaker opponents gets old quickly, and I want to learn more about Pokemon to have a chance at defeating the better ones. Even if I don't win all the time (which I won't, of course), the knowledge I gain here will hopefully be useful.

I think that I am pretty unusual in this respect. As it says in my sig, I have never played (or even seen) a 4th Gen game. I have no friends either that play pokemon. My most modern game is LeafGreen, which I hardly ever played. In reality I only ever play RBY on my gameboy colour.

What happened, really, was that we, at school, hit an age at which it no longer became an embarassment to reminisce about Pokemon. Consequently, after getting a bit bored, I picked up Pokemon Red and started playing and quickly realised how addictive it was, and how stupid I had been when playing it previously. Since my link cable was broken and had been for years, I looked up on GameFAQs how to cheat to get some pokemon such as the version exclusives and Mew and whatever. This is where I discovered a moveset guide to competitive pokemon for RBY, which interested me. Having discovered that RBY had a rather narrow competitive metagame, I started creating competitive sets on my LeafGreen game, and looked up a guide for that.

However, at this point I realised that all competitive battling occurred on simulators, the RSE ones being a bit dead and forgotten. Consequently, I looked at some guides for DP, and, although the pokemon were mostly totally alien to me, realised that this seemed a good balanced metagame. Someone in one of the guides mentioned Smogon, which is how I discovered it.

Having seen the Smogon strategy pokedex, I quickly realised how redundant all of the GameFAQs guides were, and downloaded Shoddy. I joined the Forums to ask a few qusetions, and quite liked the general community, so here I am. I stayed because although I don't battle that much, I enjoy helping others in RMT and taking part in discussions.

I came to Smogon for a few months before joining. Usually I'd just look at the tiers (I make my own movesets, although me and Smogon seem to think alike sometimes)

Then, a few days ago, I wanted to get my team Rated. My usual Forum website's Forum for Team-Rating was dead, so I came here. (I got some quick advice, and some good advice too).

Now I'm hoping to join a Tourament soon, but there are none open to join atm.

Posted in here before but now I have something more holistic to say:

I've never had somebody telling me that my act needed to get together, without getting banned or warned without explanation.

People told me why I was a shitty poster, and it slowly improved my posting skills.

I'd lurk for months at a time because I'd know I'm not ready yet, but I'm feeling generally accepted now.

It wasn't apparent that Stewie Griffin would be a fucking shameful name, but Smogon helped me know better.

How I got in to Pokemon
Funny Story. Being a 15 year old my friends and I got extremely bored and over a friends house we found FireRed the pokemon game and laughed. Until someone mention they could kill everyones pokemon with there old school Ruby version. I laughed and said "nah i'm a beast I beat the elite four 8xx amount of times." My friends and I decided to find all our old games and have a 8 person tournament amongst ourselves. Me actually caring I went on the internet looking up how to make my pokemon stronger and watching numerous battles. Turns out I won that tournament thanks to finding smogon and having actualy sets and ev's. Won every round 5 to 6 ko's. Its funny cause it was just a thing to do but I got hooked.

Why I "Stayed
I was hooked. At first I started on PurpleSurge in a clan and noticed I had a gift for battling so I decided to stay. A few months later I decided to create an account on smogon after using shoddy for so long. It surely was worth it by peaking #4 in LC and #6 in Ubers and peaking in the high 40's in OU's. It's a shame I am at the point I want to quit because this last month I have lost 70% of my matches and 95% of the losses came from hax or lack of wanting to play because I lost all motivation.

How I got into Pokémon
Pokémon cards were really popular here. We used to bring 'em to trade, or just to show others how cool they were. At that time, my older brother managed to download an emulator, along with Pokémon Red. I've never stopped playing since then. A couple of years after, I found out about the second gen, so I tried Crystal. It was just so amazing. After that it's been Pokémon Stadium, Colosseum, Fire Red and Platinum. I skipped the third gen because imho it's horrible, and I began playing again when I borrowed Pearl from a friend.

How I found out about Smogon
I am currently a member of a Platinum forum. There, a couple of members were talking about EVs and IVs. I didn't know what it was, so I decided to check it out. One of the members told me to check out Smogon, so I did. I learned a couple of things here, then I decided to joined, because I knew that I could learn a lot from experienced players posting here, and I really want to improve my skills.

I found this site via Shoddy. I began to use Shoddy on another Pokemon forum I joined, because I'd never heard of competitive battling, and as I'd loved PvP on WoW when I played I figured hey, why wouldn't I love it with Pokemon!

However, that forum's more related to Wi-fi trading, and I'm still learning the rules of competitive battling as well as strategies - I'm really terrible at the moment, so someone linked me Smogon to begin to learn from. And thus, here I am :) I can't really participate per se in discussions, but I can at least lurk and learn.

I was into Pokemon since it came out when I was around 7 or 8 here in the States, but my foster parents thought it was "evil" and burned all of my TCGs, and then when I was 12 my parents sold my things citing that I was "too old" for Pokemon. Then I went to college and was like hey, I wonder if I'll still enjoy that. So I purchased a DS and Platinum, and found I liked it still - and then discovered hey, this thing has Wi-fi! I wonder if there are any communities in the Intarnet Tubez?! And there were.

And all was happy. And all rejoiced.

Lets see it all started when I was five pokemon had just came out and all the kids I knew had the game so my mom took my to the store and bought me a Neon Green Gameboy Color and Pokemon Red took me a hour to get out of the house at first and I have been playing ever since. Recently my High School started a Pokemon Club(lol) and I was searching the web on good techniques and Pokemon to use for battling and I found this sight and even though I don't post much I search through the forums looking for tips, tricks, and funny stuff.
