Smogon's First Create-A-Team! (I think) - Poll 1

What type of team should this be?

I sort of came up with this idea from the "create-a-pokemon" threads that have been going around. Mostly I disapprove of them because they seem to have a lot of work thrown into something that probably wont be implemented by Nintendo (no offence guys, I love what you are doing, but I guess I am being a bit pessimistic about it). The other thing that drove me to make this topic revolves, very simple, around my inability to make a good team. It's very disheartening, yes, but hopefully this little project can remedy things!

So the idea behind this is that, a) we make a team based on the series of polls (what kind of team we want it to be, what the team should focus on, etc.), get the pokemon together, and then throw it out there as a very solidly made team with input from many different "pokemon experts" and hope that it can provide some (or many) with a high level squad!

This isn't just for me, but it's for everyone that has trouble making solid teams and doesn't want to just go over to the RMT and steal one (I'm looking at you Obi), and doesn't want other people to make teams for them. This way we are all working together so everyone (or most people) can feel like they are taking part!

I guess this comes down to the first question (and poll option) that will be used for this 'project': what type of team do you want this to be?

This comes with three choices:

Offensive - This is the type of team where you rely more on type coverage, damage dealing pokemon and quick battles to win.

Balanced - A team with well rounded offensive AND defensive capabilities. So while we could maybe have one wall, we're not looking to stall.

Defensive - Stall much? This is the type of team that would pack walls and lots of good type coverage. While this team isn't likely to set up a sweep or anything, it sure will wear you down and frustrate your plans.

Please explain in a brief post why you chose the type of team that you voted for and what your general ideas are so I can have some ideas for the next poll.

**For the record, if there is ever a tie at any point and I have voted for one of the options, my vote gets taken away.

you should post thread asking if tis is a good idea and if people will participate before this. thats how the create a pokemon started. i like the idea, but without the starting thread i expect mods will lock this unfortunitly.

You could always help it out by participating in it and sharing your thoughts. If the mods lock it I'll ask for an explanation and go from there. But I'm sure if they see that people are interested they wont just go and lock it right away.

thats what i did.

ok, but if you want the best chance of sucsess you should delete this and do a "would you participate in/is it a good idea" topic first.
i have said i kinda like tis idea.

Ok, but you never said which kind of team you would prefer, why, your ideas on the team and you never voted in the poll. :P

Also, I guess I should share what I think:

I'm a very offensively oriented player, I like playing with offensive teams. So, obviously if I had to vote I would go with the offensive team because I really don't have the patience for stall and I love relying on a team that involves prediction as one of its main factors. I think it really teaches you to play a lot better than playing it safe ever could. It's just like a great pokemon master once told me (Council/imperfectluck): if you don't have any healing on your team, you play better because if you have less space for mistakes. On a team that can heal itself you can always be like, oh, I made the wrong move, I'll just recover next time. Not so much with an offensive team and I think it helps promote better playing.

So that's my idea. In terms of what kind of offensive team? It doesn't necessarily have to have a team full of sweepers, but every pokemon should be able to dish out some damage and I think there should be a central pokemon that all the other pokemon work to set up.

Why are you copying the Create a pokemon thread.

I want my team to be magical. Have unicorns, ponies, and cute little dolls.

Rochester, hmm??

Oh, right!

Yeah, so I voted "Offensive". While it's easy to win with offensive teams at times, it's also hard to get a Pokemon to actually sweep their team. You must take many things into consideration while doing so, ie: note down their team and health on each Pokemon, thinking what their last un-identified Pokemon could be to allow your SDLucario to sweep, knowing when to let a Pokemon die so you can bring in your dangerous DDGyarados to sweep their team. Offensive teams can take up to 2 minutes to make, and days/weeks to perfect. You need synergy, well thought-out knowledge on the meta and threatening/risky prediction. So many options are out there when you do infact build an offensive team, with access to Life Orb, CB, CS and set-up moves like Dragon Dance and Calm Mind.

Can we create a team that will guarantee victory almost 100% of the time with an offensive themed team?

I am curious, so I picked "Offensive" to find out.

This idea is good in theory, but bad in practice. It doesn't matter how good your team is if every knows how it works. Also look at how Obi's stall team is amazing, but most people don't play it to its full potential. It's a great thought and would be a fun process, but in the end, the result won't be what you are expecting. People put over five pages of thought into countering Obi's stall team, they'll put even more into countering this.

But for the sake of the fun and learning experience, I'm going with offensive because those are definitely the most fun to use.

While it is true that offensive requirws more prediction, I went with defensive. Defensive teams require you to think ahead and watch the health of your walls. There is still a little prediction involved countering choice item users, who will rip your team apart if they pick the right move.

wow...
nice idea mate
i chose balanced because anyway all of my teams are balanced anyway.
can't wait to see how this will turn out!

so what happens the day after this team is finalised and countless people have already found out certain flaws/weakness and incorporated them into a regular team. Then a months worth of polls is wasted.

Well, first of all, it's not like everyone in the world is going to use this team at once. And, even if they do, it's just going to promote change in the metagame, which is good because it keeps things interesting.

Besides, the point of making a solid team is to be able to take threats against it. The idea here is to build a team that is capable of standing up against adversity. "Weaknesses" can be found in any team. But as long as you play your cards right usually you can get around them. That's the point of getting so many different minds together to make this one team. So that we can hopefully come up with the closest thing to a "perfect" team to date.

Besides, how will it have gone to waste even if you find a flaw? If we go by the idea that there is no such thing as a perfect team with no weakness, then people will always be using different teams (maybe the same style), and you never know what team (for certain) another person will use.

Seriously guys, stop spamming this topic with whether or not you think it is a good idea you bunch of wannabe mods :P If you don't like it, don't post; if you do, contribute.

Anyway, I think it is a solid idea, if not for the practical purpose of actually using the team we ultimately come up with, but at the very least as a concentrated medium for really specifying what the mindset is for building a team.

My only problem with this, of course, is how we are starting. I voted offensive, but now I wish I didn't vote at all. Why? Because winning in DP is all about reducing your chances of losing. What that means is that limiting yourself to "offensive," "defensive," and "balanced," is a bad way to start.

How about instead of those three categories, you give us say 10 different Pokemon to start off with, and we build off of the Pokemon, not with some intrinsically flawed idea that limits our options?

If you want more than 10 for us to vote on, you don't even need the poll, just ask us to BOLD our pick from whatever your pool is, and go with the top consensus one.

I can go into a lot more detail for why I feel starting off with offensive, defensive or balanced is a bad idea, if you want.

O...because it says what kind of a team should this be >_>

Like, let's say offensive wins out and we choose Garchomp as the start. You can build a stall team, an offensive team, or a balanced team around it.

Regardless of anything else, Weezing NEEDS to be in any "Smogon Team," You know it's true.

Good idea in theory.

Look at the poll - offensive wins.
Garchomp
Lucario
Please give more ideas!

I was saying the poll itself shouldn't decide what the "team" should be, since an offensive Pokemon can be situated on any type of team.

...lol. Did you not read my previous post and CLegacyM's response? He said the Poll was to decide the Pokemon. If it is, then it shouldn't say team ._.
