SPL XII Introduction


Greetings ADVers! With SPL XII underway, ten teams will be competing for the glorious red trophy. This thread will be used to discuss ADV related topics, whether it’s about the players, general metagame trends, matches, predictions and so on. I will update this frequently with each week pairings, player standings, replays and usage statistics. The schedule can be found here.

This threads looking a little quiet so ill try and spice it up a little with a prediction post detailing some of my thoughts on these matchups.
Good luck lads, I hope we get to see some solid games!

[RAI] CyberOdin✝ vs thelinearcurve [SCO]
its difficult not to bold linear, but odins record so far speaks for itself, and with altina in his builder - possibly the single adver who knows linear best! I think odin has as good chance as any to take a game off linear! If he and altina make a good team choice this week and odin continues to pilot consistently I reckon we could see a very close game.

[BIG] McMeghan vs Tamahome [CLA]
Tama is a great player but he does not appear thus far to be having a great spl. Roro on the other hand won very convincingly last week and definitely has more momentum, I would also rate mcmeghan over tama on non spl recency as well as he did come forth in callous invitational, one of, if not the biggest adv event of the year. looking forward to this game, while I favour mcmeghan, Tama is a great player and I would not be surprised to see him make a comeback this week!

[TIG] Golden Sun vs Teclis [RUI]
Teclis looked on really good form in his game last week, and was potentially on for a winner were it not for an untimely crit from aero double edge on to his healthy defensive pert. Golden sun however has been putting numbers on the sheet so I feel like I should probably bold him, that said I do think that Hclat + pdc (my mistake, teclis just used a pdc team last week) support is probably a little more valuable than callous + jabba, no offense to my boomer buddies on the tigers of course :P
I reckon this is gonna be a close one and im looking forward to seeing who will come out on top!

[TYR] Gilbert arenas vs Star [WOL]
predicting this game is like tossing a coin really, I think that these players are evenly matched, bolding Marcop here because I think that this is the ideal week for him and Sadly to cook up some really smart techs for the often quite standard looking Starmaster and BKC teams that we have so far seen from the wolves. I really hope we get so see some cool teams in the coming weeks from Marcop, looking forward to seeing who comes out on top of this game!

[RAI] Altina vs. Gilbert arenas [TYR]
Hyped to see altina off the bench to show us all what he has! Despite going for a couple of K more than Odin (who was a 3k) at auction Altina still hasn't been given a chance to start, I know he was looking forward to spl this year and I'm sure he has a great stock of tried and true skillfully crafted teams to use, looking forward immensely to seeing what both players bring to this game. I'll be bolding marcop here because I think he has the edge with his experience on the big stage, but I really hope we see Altina show us how much stronger he is than he was in his spl debut last year!

[CRY] umbry vs. Golden Sun [TIG]
Exciting matchup indeed, both players have showed us they know how to roll with the best of them this season, I'll be bolding umbry because I think their win last week was more convincing than GS'.

[SHA] Endill vs. McMeghan [BIG]

[WOL] Star vs. thelinearcurve [SCO]
I'm being bold as fuck here highlighting star over linear, I know, but starmaster has kinda been linears cryptonite this year (see adv globals) and I think I should respect that with my predicts. With BKC and ABR in his corner we can expect the prep to be tip top as well! On the other hand linear has proven his dominance over the last few weeks not dropping a game with support from the OG Cowboy Dan in his corner and even whipping out the DA techs in spectacular fashion a few times, I wouldn't be entirely surprised if we saw more of those to come Very much looking forward to it, I reckon this promises to be a very good game!

[RUI] Teclis vs. Tamahome [CLA]
Teclis has played very very well this spl even if the sheet doesn't reflect that. He was tremendously unlucky to have his swampert crit by an aerodactyl one week and his kingdra flinched by a ddmence the next, if that luck is finally behind him, and I'm hoping it is, then I reckon we could see a really good game here!
As for my thoughts about the Tama side, Tama hasn't had the best spl so far it can be said! After a shaky start he did manage to find his feet more Vs mcmeghan last week, granted it was with the help of an extremely timely crit with his cloyster, I'm looking forward to this one for sure!

would blissey, gengar, etc. be broken if they had access to a 100% sleep-inducing move? if so, does the accuracy of sing/hypnosis respectively balance them? i don't think so, and thus believe sleep-inducing moves should be banned from adv ou, along with freeze status, which is blatantly uncompetitive. agreeing on the essential elements that make the game worthwhile is a better way forward than maintaining the image of it by a fanatical obsession with cart accuracy.

100% with you on sleep. I'd need more convincing on Freeze though. This is a good discussion to have, but this really isn't the place to have it, and during spl is probably not the right time either.

In all seriousness, the dumb arguments everyone made to keep gligar and fullpass legal are actually valid for sleep and freeze this time around, especially given how offense-deprived ADV is right now.



That outta the way, I'm particularly excited to watch the clash of 4-0s this week. Neither linear nor star have been very close to losing. I don't wanna bold either name—curious what each'll use to take the other down.

Following asta/linear's HP Ghost gyara from last week, could HP Ghost mence be considered an option as well? Being able to ohko bulky gar ev'd for flying could go a long way vs a few bulky offense builds, and it also ohkos starmie(even some bulky spreads, which double edge fails to). But the main thing that actually came to my mind was hp ghost/sub/brick break/dd, which sounds extremely deadly vs some standard starmie tss with refresh pert and skarmory getting trapped by mag. Those two moves also have perfect coverage, with main negative that comes to mind being that they do fuck all vs zapdos and metagross.
Could also just go ghost/eq/dd/slide, the lack of flying coverage presumably won't matter much when it still hits things like celebi and clay, although i guess you miss out on heracross. could still use aerial ace over slide i guess. if the lack of firepower from STAB is the main issue, ghost/eq/dd/edge works as well with edge being stronger than flying. Idk why or if it would even work well but the idea's been in my head since watching the video. Been a blast watching linear's videos and replays, chef's kiss for these teams.

This is a cool idea kratos, from what I gather a few people have dabbled with this idea already, although I've yet to see anyone (or manage myself) to pull it off particularly well, in the same way ghost gyara has been, its probably partly to do with how gyarados offers a little more of a defensive role and suffers less from switching about its coverages moves like mence does, hesitant to give out techs and all that during spl, but consider some spdef bulk on that hp ghost set you mentioned, similar to what we saw from golden sun last week, and then refresh > sub, since mence has access to it and it actually means that you can remove status you couldn't have avoided taking such as when switching in, as well as providing use Vs Milo and monopert :)

If you figure it out and manage to make it work please let me know id love to see the team!!!
