Hippowdon @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 8 Atk / 248 Def
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- Slack Off
- Stealth Rock
- Toxic
Hippowdon is a good counter to tyranitar, being able to switch-in to any of tyranitar's attacks. The highest damage tyranitar can inflict is by using ice punch, which can only 3hko and hippowdon can manage that to an extent with slack off. With the bulk, hippowdon can tank a hit from tyranitar and attack back with earthquake, which in turn 2hkos tyranitar,or toxic it.
252+ Atk Choice Band Tyranitar Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 248+ Def Hippowdon: 89-105 (21.1 - 25%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ Atk Choice Band Tyranitar Crunch vs. 252 HP / 248+ Def Hippowdon: 142-168 (33.8 - 40%) -- 28.4% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ Atk Choice Band Tyranitar Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 248+ Def Hippowdon: 119-140 (28.3 - 33.3%) -- 92.7% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ Atk Choice Band Tyranitar Ice Punch vs. 252 HP / 248+ Def Hippowdon: 178-210 (42.3 - 50%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Skarmory @ Leftovers / Rocky Helmet
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 200 HP / 124 Def / 184 Spe
Bold / Impish Nature
IVs: 0 Atk (if Brave Bird isn't being run)
- Body Press
- Spikes / Defog
- Toxic / Whirlwind / Brave Bird
- Roost

Skarmory is a Hard Check to Banded Ttar. Whilst it can swap in on any of Ttar's moves, live, and OHKO with Body Press, Stone Edge's high crit rate means that if rocks are up Ttar has a 31.3% to OHKO with a crit. In terms of the set, the defense EVs guarantee the Body Press OHKO, and the speed lets Skarmory outspeed Adamant Ttar. Body Press and Roost are must have moves, whereas the other moves can be adjusted to suit your team's needs.

  • 124+ Def Skarmory Body Press vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tyranitar: 344-408 (100.8 - 119.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
  • 252+ Atk Choice Band Tyranitar Stone Edge vs. 200 HP / 124+ Def Skarmory: 171-202 (53.2 - 62.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
  • 252+ Atk Choice Band Tyranitar Crunch vs. 200 HP / 124+ Def Skarmory: 136-162 (42.3 - 50.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
  • 252+ Atk Choice Band Tyranitar Ice Punch vs. 200 HP / 124+ Def Skarmory: 85-101 (26.4 - 31.4%) -- 14.4% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

THE SIRE

Quagsire @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- Scald
- Recover
- Toxic

One of the best rock resists in ou, thanks to its bulk and not being weak to common coverage coverage moves like Earthquake unlike its fellow rock resisting comrades like Melmetal, which makes it a really good Tyranitar check, and thanks to its afformentioned bulk, it can take a CB crunch from full.

252+ Atk Choice Band Tyranitar Crunch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Quagsire: 177-208 (44.9 - 52.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Submission period is now closed, so let’s move on to the voting phase. The Victim of this week was the Rock titan :tyranitar:. Here are the submissions, we’ve got:

* Urshifu-Rapid-Strike was submitted as a counter but this is clearly a check because you can switch-in and revenge kill Tyranitar but you can’t repeatedly switch-in because Urshifu doesn’t have any recovery.

** Skarmory was submitted as a “hard chek” but I rather consider this as a counter because Crunch doesn’t 2HKO and even though Stone Edge does, you are faster and can roost in front of it, thus gaining a Rock resistance (and this set lacks Fire Punch).

You need to vote for 2 checks and 2 counters, voting phase will end on Sunday, good luck to everyone!
(you can’t vote for your own submission)

For next week we will be featuring a Pokemon from the ancient times who sees some usage in OU because of its deadly STAB combination. The Victim of this week is Mamoswine!

mamoswine.gif

Mamoswine @ Life Orb
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Icicle Crash
- Earthquake
- Ice Shard
- Stealth Rock

With an insane offensive typing and a very high Attack stat, this Pokemon is a threatening wallbreaker who shouldn’t be slept on. Earthquake and Icicle Crash are two powerful STAB moves with the latter able to flinch some switch-ins allowing Mamoswine to beat them. Ice Shard is a nice priority move to compensate for its average Speed Tier. Stealth Rock is a nice utility option and can be used to set Rocks on forced switchs. Knock Off is another option for the last slot if you already have a Rock setter. Life Orb further increases its damage output making it way harder to check. While being an offensive beast, Mamoswine still have some defensive utility thanks to its high HP stat and an interesting ability in Thick Fat which not only negates its Fire weakness but also gives it a pseudo Ice immunity allowing it to switch-in one or two times against threats like Kyurem and Weavile. What checks and counters would you run to prevent this ice age monster from wrecking havok?

Submission phase will end on next Friday, good luck!

Skarmory @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Body Press
- Spikes
- Whirlwind
- Roost

Skarmory can take 2 icicle crashes and use Body Press or Spikes against Mamoswine. It's flying type makes it hover above Earthquake as well. Submitting this set as a Counter.
252+ Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Icicle Crash vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 113-134 (33.8 - 40.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252+ Def Skarmory Body Press vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mamoswine: 244-288 (67.5 - 79.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Buzzwole @ Leftovers
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 HP / 144 Def / 112 Spe
Impish Nature
- Drain Punch
- Ice Punch
- Roost
- toxic
Buzzwole can switch into any of mamoswine's attacks, thanks to its typing and bulk. The highest damage mamoswine can inflict is a 4hko,but buzzwole can roost out this damage and hit back with drain punch, which always results in a 2hko.Submitting this as a counter.
252+ Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Icicle Crash vs. 252 HP / 144+ Def Buzzwole: 122-146 (29.1 - 34.9%) -- 99.9% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 144+ Def Buzzwole: 70-84 (16.7 - 20%) -- possible 7HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 Atk Buzzwole Drain Punch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mamoswine: 258-306 (71.4 - 84.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

washtom

:bw/rotom-wash:
Rotom-Wash @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 168 Def / 88 Spe

Bold Nature
- Volt Switch

- Hydro Pump
- Pain Split

- Will-O-Wisp

Rotom-Washington
is a great counter to Mamoswine, since it can come in on every attack because it is immune to Earthquake the strongest STAB of Mamoswine and it resists Icicle Crash and Ice Shard but it can burns Mamoswine with a Wisp, it has longevity with Pain Split and furthermore it can make use of Hydro Pump to wear Mamoswine down. It can also generate momentum with Volt Switch when Mamoswine decides to switch out. With all these factors combined, Rotom-Wash makes up for a great counter!

Urshifu-Rapid-Strike @ Choice Band
Ability: Unseen Fist
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Surging Strikes
- Close Combat
- U-turn
- Aqua Jet

The bear has all the tools to check Mamoswine; It outspeeds resists Ice Shard, lives all other attacks, and OHKOs with both STABs.

252+ Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Urshifu-Rapid-Strike: 231-274 (67.7 - 80.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 Atk Choice Band Urshifu-Rapid-Strike Surging Strikes (3 hits) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mamoswine on a critical hit: 666-792 (184.4 - 219.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Choice Band Urshifu-Rapid-Strike Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mamoswine: 704-830 (195 - 229.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Slowbro @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Scald
- Future Sight
- Slack Off
- Teleport

Slowbro acts as a counter towards this Mamoswine due to the lack of Knock Off on Mamoswine. The only move you have to look out for is Earthquake as Slowbro can comfortably switch into Mamoswine's Ice STABs and with Heavy-Duty Boots, you avoid any hazards that Mamoswine sets up in the field. Slowbro can force out Mamoswine by clicking Scald that deals a lot back and can potentially burn it decreasing its attack stat or pivot out with Teleport to a teammate if it's expected for Mamoswine to switchout. Slowbro can play a bit more aggressively if you into that by setting up Future Sight enabling Slowbro's teammates to pressure the opposing side.

Kartana @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Leaf Blade
- Knock Off
- Sacred Sword
- Smart Strike
Kart is able to out speed and kill mamo
252 Atk Kartana Leaf Blade vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mamoswine: 456-536 (126.3 - 148.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Submitting kartana as an offensive check to mamo

:ss/corviknight:
Corviknight @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 168 Def / 88 SpD
Impish Nature
- Body Press
- Iron Defense
- Defog
- Roost

Corviknight is a check. It avoids the 2HKO from all of Mamoswine's attacks, and can either remove its hazards or threaten a 2HKO with Body Press. If it's able to set up with Iron Defense, Body Press becomes an OHKO, and the possibility of getting cheesed to death by Icicle Crash flinches becomes a lot less likely.

:corviknight:
168+ Def Corviknight Body Press vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mamoswine: 184-218 (50.9 - 60.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 168+ Def Corviknight Body Press vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mamoswine: 368-434 (101.9 - 120.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

:mamoswine:
252+ Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Icicle Crash vs. 252 HP / 168+ Def Corviknight: 149-177 (37.2 - 44.2%) -- 100% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Icicle Crash vs. +2 252 HP / 168+ Def Corviknight: 75-90 (18.7 - 22.5%) -- possible 6HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Ice Shard vs. 252 HP / 168+ Def Corviknight: 70-83 (17.5 - 20.7%) -- possible 7HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Ice Shard vs. +2 252 HP / 168+ Def Corviknight: 35-43 (8.7 - 10.7%) -- possibly the worst move ever

Golisopod @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Level: 100
Adamant Nature
Ability: Emergency Exit
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
- First Impression
- Spikes
- Liquidation
- Knock Off

252+ Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Golisopod: 87-103 (24.5 - 29%) -- 99.9% chance to 4HKO

252+ Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Icicle Crash vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Golisopod: 74-87 (20.9 - 24.5%) -- guaranteed 5HKO

252+ Atk Golisopod First Impression vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mamoswine: 189-223 (52.3 - 61.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ Atk Golisopod Liquidation vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mamoswine: 356-422 (98.6 - 116.8%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO

Can always switch in, absolutely eat hits, and 2hko’s with first impression (not even factoring in Liquidation which is a near guaranteed ohko). First impression being priority also means that you can always revenge kill it, since no matter your health, you can come in and click FI. Can either kill it outright, or set up spikes on it.

it seems like a counter to me, but lack of recovery means I certainly wouldn’t dispute it being listed as a check instead
