Rillaboom

:Rillaboom:
Rillaboom @ Miracle Seed
Ability: Grassy Surge
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Grassy Glide
- Knock Off
- Superpower

Swords Dance Rillaboom is a Counter to Calm Mind Suicune. Just your usual HO Rilla set. Spam Grassy Glide, tank Scald and go apeshit.
Miracle Seed + Grassy Surge to make your Grassy Glide a fast nuke without recoil from Life Orb, fully invested Attack and Speed to break Suicune’s sub and cleanly KO it afterwards, even with Protect stalling antics. Swords Dance allows you to overcome burn from Scald so you can still hit hard. Grassy Glide is mandatory priority STAB that 2HKOs max HP Suicune and will OHKO it after Sub. Knock Off removes Suicune’s Leftovers to cripple its only form of passive recovery. Superpower’s there for things like Magnezone and other steels, but is kinda irrelevant here. Oh, and Rilla doesn’t go down to Scald quickly either, just use Swords Dance if burned and nothing changes.

0 SpA Suicune Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Rillaboom: 53-63 (15.5 - 18.4%) -- possible 8HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery

+1 0 SpA Suicune Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Rillaboom: 79-93 (23.1 - 27.2%) -- possible 5HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery

+2 0 SpA Suicune Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Rillaboom: 105-124 (30.7 - 36.3%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery

+3 0 SpA Suicune Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Rillaboom: 132-156 (38.7 - 45.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery
252+ Atk Miracle Seed Rillaboom Grassy Glide vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Suicune in Grassy Terrain: 338-398 (83.6 - 98.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery and Grassy Terrain recovery

+2 252+ Atk Miracle Seed Rillaboom Grassy Glide vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Suicune in Grassy Terrain: 674-794 (166.8 - 196.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

:dragonite:COUNTER

Idk how many times I've submitted this set here lol but this is as good as it gets once again.
dragon dance to boost dual wingbeat damage to make it break sub with one hit and thus bypass sub+protect pp stalling antics, good bulk+typing and roost to stay healthy against even boosted scalds, and heal bell to cure scald burns to boot. boosted dual wingbeats will greatly limit suicune's ability to produce substitutes and also outdamage boosted scalds by a large margin to make dragonite possibly the biggest op to vincune.

Hey there, unfortunately we didn't get much votes this week (it's actually the first time there's so few votes, even though I felt Suicune was a pretty cool Pokemon to feature here).

Deadline was supposed to be tomorrow, but I'm probably gonna extend it if there's not a lot of new votes since then.
Tagging the usual participants in the hope to have a few more vote. If you have an idea don't hesitate to submit it!

Volcanion

Volcanion @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Steam Eruption
- Toxic
- Defog
- Sludge Wave
Volcanion is literally the best mon to counter Suicune. Its talent makes it untouchable and having access to defog gives you a move to abuse in case of a pp stall if you can't manage to toxic it.

No need to calc since it can't be touched LOL
252+ SpA Volcanion Sludge Wave vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Suicune: 101-119 (25 - 29.4%) -- guaranteed 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Volcanion Steam Eruption vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Suicune: 87-103 (21.5 - 25.4%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery

:ss/keldeo:
Keldeo @ Leftovers
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Calm Mind
- Scald
- Secret Sword
- Substitute

Keldeo is a check. While Scald burns are obviously kind of annoying, Suicune needs multiple Calm Mind boosts to break through Keldeo's substitutes, giving it enough leeway to setup alongside Suicune. Since Secret Sword targets defense, Keldeo has the upper hand if it gets into a CM war, since it will always break Suicune's Substitutes, even when it's at +6, and can threaten a 2HKO long before that.

:keldeo:
252 SpA Keldeo Scald vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Suicune: 57-68 (14.1 - 16.8%) -- possible 9HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Keldeo Secret Sword vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Suicune: 123-145 (30.4 - 35.8%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 252 SpA Keldeo Secret Sword vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Suicune: 184-217 (45.5 - 53.7%) -- 2% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252 SpA Keldeo Secret Sword vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Suicune: 246-289 (60.8 - 71.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+6 252 SpA Keldeo Secret Sword vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Suicune: 487-574 (120.5 - 142%) -- guaranteed OHKO

:suicune:
0 SpA Suicune Scald vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Keldeo: 42-51 (13 - 15.7%) -- possibly the worst move ever
+1 0 SpA Suicune Scald vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Keldeo: 64-76 (19.8 - 23.5%) -- possible 6HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 0 SpA Suicune Scald vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Keldeo: 85-101 (26.3 - 31.2%) -- 12.5% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
+6 0 SpA Suicune Scald vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Keldeo: 171-201 (52.9 - 62.2%) -- 99.6% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Toxapex @ Black Sludge / Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
(any ev's spread you like, doesn't rly matter)
- Haze
- Knock Off
- Recover
- Toxic / Toxic Spike / Light Screen
Toxapex is a counter to suicune. Even though Suicune has the hability to pp stall toxapex, it cannot win a pure 1vs1 against him if the Toxapex player playes well. To win your duel, you need to haze your opponent once he boosted himself with two calm mind. This strategy is meant to avoid losing more haze pp than calm mind since it's halves by pressure. Between that, you can just spam knock off, toxic spike or light screen to temporise. If you have light screen in your set, you can't lose your duel even if you mess up everything written above since it's not affected by pressure and has 48 pp, like haze. Also, if you play black sludge, you can't get bullied by a scald burn and you will waste less recover.

I hope you learned something or enjoyed reading this. Thanks for your attention

Suicune isn't touching this thing at all and having both stabs means that eventually, you'll kill the damn thing, meh probably. Most of the time this thing is just gonna be a stalemate but it's just funny

Unaware Clefable is a counter to Suicune. Get in its face, click Calm Mind, and you've successfully turned it into setup fodder. Clefable is a great blanket check to other setup sweepers as well, the role of a defensive Fairy is never out of utility and fits onto many teams.

Thanks for the ping ironwater! Strangly, I haven't seen any notifications from this thread recently.

Hey there, thanks for all the new submissions. I'm closing the submission period so that people still have the whole weekend to vote. Let’s thus move on to the voting phase. The Victim of this week was :suicune:.

To complete the submission, I'm submitting Calm Mind Tapu Koko as a check:

tapukoko.gif

Tapu Koko @ Heavy-Duty Boots / Leftovers
Ability: Electric Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Dazzling Gleam
- Calm Mind
- Roost

If regular Tapu Koko struggles against Suicune because of its terrain getting stalled and because a boosted Suicune can take its Thunderbolt relatively easily, Calm Mind Tapu Koko is able to setup too and to threaten it with a boosted Thunderbolt which compensate for Suicune boosted SpD. You can even Roost or set another Calm Mind if Suicune tries to protect. I'm submitting it as a check as Tapu Koko relatively low SpD prevents it from reliably switch into Suicune.

Also, I will count the Rillaboom submission as a check and not a counter, because Rillaboom doesn't like switching on Suicune clicking Sub and risking a Scald burn on the next turn.

With that saying, here are the submissions, we’ve got:

Checks

:keldeo: by InvisibleWater

:rillaboom: by SDK03

:tapu koko: by ironwater

Counters

:dragonite: by SLDR

:volcanion: by Zoaw

:toxapex: by Sirwings

:gastrodon: by Red Raven

:clefable: (Unaware) by Smashburn

Vote for your two favorite checks and your two favorite counters (you can’t vote for your own submission).
Voting phase ends on Sunday.

For next week, we will feature another old gen staple: Latios.
latios.gif

Latios (M) @ Choice Specs
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draco Meteor
- Psyshock
- Mystical Fire
- Aura Sphere

Even after several generations and a lot of powercreep, Latios is still a decently strong wallbreaker. Its Speed tier remains solid, outspeeding threats like Kartana, and its fire power is impressive when equipped with a Choice Specs. Draco Meteor is its main STAB and acts as a powerful nuke. Psyshock let it hit most special walls in the tier while Mystical Fire and Aurasphere are great coverage moves to hit Steel types who resist its two STABs. You still have to lock yourself into the right move to pressure efficiently the opposing team, but when you do, you are likely gonna get a few kills. Who would you use to prevent this monster from tearing apart your team? Let’s find out!

Submission phase will end on next Friday, good luck!

Bisharp

:bisharp:
Bisharp @ Black Glasses
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Knock Off
- Sucker Punch
- Iron Head

Swords Dance Bisharp is a Check to Specs Latios. Just your usual HO Bisharp. Click the instant win button Sucker Punch and end Latios in one turn. Black Glasses boost your most important STAB moves in Sucker Punch and Knock Off without any recoil that Life Orb would give. Defiant punishes Defog, switchins such as Landorus-T and the occasional Sticky Web while also boosting Bisharp’s attack further. Max Attack EVs to make Bisharp hit hard and max Speed EVs to outspeed defensive, passive or just slow Pokemon, it’s not going to help you outspeed a Latios though, that’s what Sucker Punch is for. Swords Dance lets you set up on said passive mons to put more pressure on enemies. Sucker Punch is mandatory priority STAB that kills Latios in one hit completely unboosted. STAB Knock Off also kills Latios in one hit on the switch and also helps cripple other Pokemon by removing their items. Iron Head is mandatory for taking on Fairies such as Clefable, but is otherwise not too useful against the Eon dragon.

Keep in mind that Bisharp is only an offensive Check to Specs Latios as it is extremely frail on the special side, with Mystical Fire and Aura Sphere OHKO’ing Bisharp and Draco Meteor doing severe damage, making switching into attacks extremely risky. However, when safely switched in and played right, Bisharp is the best answer to removing your opponent’s Latios.

252 SpA Choice Specs Latios Draco Meteor vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Bisharp: 213-251 (78.5 - 92.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 SpA Choice Specs Latios Aura Sphere vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Bisharp: 700-828 (258.3 - 305.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Choice Specs Latios Mystical Fire vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Bisharp: 328-388 (121 - 143.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Bisharp Iron Head vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Latios: 169-199 (56.1 - 66.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+2 252+ Atk Bisharp Iron Head vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Latios: 336-396 (111.6 - 131.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ Atk Black Glasses Bisharp Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Latios: 492-582 (163.4 - 193.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ Atk Black Glasses Bisharp Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Latios: 354-416 (117.6 - 138.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

For these reasons, Bisharp is a great offensive Check to Specs Latios.

Reserving Clefable

Utility Clefable
:ss/clefable:
Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Knock Off
- Soft-Boiled
- Moonblast
- Thunder Wave

Clefable is, under this circumstance, a check to Latios. In most situations Clefable can manage Latios quite well, it takes little-to-nothing from Mystical Fire and Aura Sphere, while being immune to Draco meteor. Although, the Psychic-type coverage of Latios is problematic for Clefable. With Psyshock, Clefable is guaranteed a 3HKO from full, while Psychic is a guaranteed 2HKO. Of course, Clefable is perfectly happy with Crippling Latios. Thunder Wave neuters it for slower teamates, while Knock off changes the base interactions between Latios and Clefable favorably. Moonblast is a guaranteed 2HKO, and Soft Boiled supplies it with consistent form of recovery to check Latios.

As a side note, I think it would be quite interesting for Latios to appear in the meta again after being dormant for so long. It is trending in a direction that is favorable to Latios, which creates leniency for its unfavorable qualities and an open niche for it.

Modest Nature

I was gonna mention this as a counter but apparently its own terrain works against it and dies to two psyshock. Regardless, Lele is a very strong check since it prevents Latios from mindlessly spamming its strongest move. Of course, Lele deletes Latios from existence with its moonblast

Scizor is a check. While switching in on Mystical Fire is obviously a death sentence, Scizor can survive two of Latios' other attacks from full, giving it plenty of opportunities to switch in and knock off its Specs or pivot out, depending on which move it runs. Regardless of which option you choose, Latios will be in KO range of Bullet Punch or whatever gets sent in by U-turn. If Scizor switches in on Psyshock, you have enough time to get to +2, then use Knock Off or U-turn for a guaranteed KO.

Adamant Nature

- Thunder Punch / Toxic
:Melmetal: CHECK

Whether this is Toxic or 3 Attacks, Protect Melmetal is a massive annoyance for Latios due to its resistances to Psychic and Dragon.
Latios already struggles with switch in opportunities because being a Psychic type sucks, but even if you predict an Earthquake or are brought in via U-turns/Teleports, you still won't make progress against Melmetal due to Protect. Any choice user that relies on prediction gets completely screwed by Protect, which in this case allows Melmetal to not only rack up Leftovers but also crucially scout what Latios is going to use. This is even more effective if Latios has Trick over one of its coverage moves. That being said, I can't say Melmetal is a counter due to fearing Mystical Fire and Aura Sphere, but it's still a very bulky Steel type that can make switching into Latios considerably easier and take its STABs pretty well, while also pummeling it with Double Iron Bash.
