For next week, let’s feature again a popular threat in SS OU with a new rising set: Choice Band Weavile.

weavile.gif

Weavile @ Choice Band
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Triple Axel
- Knock Off
- Ice Shard
- Beat Up

Weavile is one of the scariest Pokemon in the tier and every serious team need to be prepared to face it. If a lot of them run a Heavy-Duty Boots Swords Dance set, a new set has emerged recently: Choice Band Weavile. When equipped with a Choice Band, Weavile becomes a deadly threat. Triple Axel and Knock Off are its main STAB option. Ice Shard is a nice priority move to take down weakened faster Pokemon like Dragapult. Lastly, Beat Up allows Weavile to fire extremely strong hits in the beginning of the game and help beating some of the Swords Dance set check. Who would you run to check or counter this deadly threat? Let’s figure it out!

Submission phase will end on next Friday, good luck!

Red Raven

I COULD BE BANNED!
:sm/tapu fini:
Tapu FIni @ Leftovers
Ability: Misty Surge
EVs: 252 HP / 116 Def / 140 Spe
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Taunt
- Calm Mind
- Draining Kiss

With stealth rock support, Fini is probably one of the best counters to Weavile simply because it can taunt every defogger except for Tornadus and Zapdos, probably. Aside from resisting both of Weavile's stabs, Fini also turns it into setup fodder and threatens a calm mind sweep

Buzzwole
:SS/buzzwole:
Buzzwole @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 228 HP / 120 Atk / 12 Def / 148 Spe

Jolly Nature
- Close Combat / Drain Punch

- Ice Punch
- Thunder Punch / Leech Life / Earthquake

- Roost

:Buzzwole: COUNTER

Let's start from the fact that the biggest check to CB Weavile is the move Stealth Rock.
That being said, big buzzer is a fantastic offensive blanket check to most physical attackers in the tier and Weavile is no exception, however it is a remarkable counter to its Choice Band variant, due to blanking its scariest move, Beat Up.
Anything that isn't Triple Axel bounces right off and, while it 2HKOs, its triple hitting mechanics make it an unreliable 2HKO and it would make Weavile take a whopping 6 hits of Rocky Helmet chip damage to 2HKO Buzzwole. This makes it really awkward for the CB Weavile user that can only make progress clicking Triple Axel.

This is a faster, bulkier spread than the common Roost + 3A set, designed to outspeed the common Air Balloon Modest Heatran but with the benefit of tanking a +2 Triple Axel from Adamant Weavile.

As far as moves go, CC + BoltBeam punch is the best coverage. Drain Punch is a safer STAB option for more durability, Earthquake hits Toxapex the hardest and Leech Life grants a stronger hit on Slowbro and Psychic types while healing Buzzwole. Both healing STABs completely trash Weavile.

252 Atk Choice Band Weavile Triple Axel (40 BP) (3 hits) vs. 228 HP / 12 Def Buzzwole: 207-246 (50.2 - 59.7%) -- approx. 2HKO

Reserving Scarf Kartana

Scarf Kartana
:ss/Kartana:
Kartana @ Choice Scarf :choice scarf:
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Smart Strike
- Sacred Sword
- Leaf Blade
- Knock Off

Scarf Kartana is a check to Weavile. While it can't come in on any of its attacks (especially Knock Off) and needs to keep healthy so it isn't revenge-killed by Ice Shard, it is great at revenge killing it. It puts a lot of pressure onto Weavile, as all of its moves will OHKO it and Knock Off forces progress on defensive checks.

:ss/urshifu-rapid-strike:
Urshifu-Rapid-Strike @ Choice Band
Ability: Unseen Fist
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Surging Strikes
- Close Combat
- Aqua Jet
- U-turn

Urshifu is a check. While it doesn't like having its Choice Band knocked off, it resists both of Weavile's STABs, allowing it to avoid the 2HKO from any of Weavile's attacks at full health. Once in, Urshifu can threaten a KO with either Surging Strikes or Close Combat. U-turn can also threaten a KO from full, but only if Urshifu's Choice Band remains intact.

:urshifu-rapid-strike:
252 Atk Choice Band Urshifu-Rapid-Strike Surging Strikes (3 hits) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Weavile on a critical hit: 390-462 (138.7 - 164.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Choice Band Urshifu-Rapid-Strike Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Weavile: 1660-1956 (590.7 - 696%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Choice Band Urshifu-Rapid-Strike Aqua Jet vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Weavile: 139-165 (49.4 - 58.7%) -- 98.8% chance to 2HKO
252 Atk Choice Band Urshifu-Rapid-Strike U-turn vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Weavile: 324-382 (115.3 - 135.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

:weavile:
252 Atk Choice Band Weavile Triple Axel (40 BP) (3 hits) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Urshifu-Rapid-Strike: 138-165 (40.4 - 48.3%) -- approx. 3HKO
252 Atk Choice Band Weavile Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Urshifu-Rapid-Strike: 111-132 (32.5 - 38.7%) -- 98.9% chance to 3HKO
252 Atk Choice Band Weavile Ice Shard vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Urshifu-Rapid-Strike: 46-55 (13.4 - 16.1%) -- possible 7HKO

(How on earth do you calc Beat Up? :pikuh:)

Scizor
:ss/scizor:
Scizor @ Leftovers /Heavy Duty Boots
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
Adamant Nature
- Bullet Punch
- U-turn
- Roost
- Swords Dance
Scizor is a counter to Weavile. It can take a Knock Off and revenge kills with bullet punch. If it comes on an ice move it can sd or u-turn.
252+ Atk Choice Band Weavile Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Scizor: 246-289 (71.5 - 84%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Weavile Beat Up(110 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Scizor: 279-328 (81.1 - 95.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Technician Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Weavile: 306-362 (108.8 - 128.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Scizor U-turn vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Weavile: 356-422 (126.6 - 150.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

How on earth do you calc Beat Up? :pikuh:
Any team featuring Beat Up Weavile has a good roster of high base attack Pokémon to bolster Beat Up.

The formula per each strike is:
(Base attack of one party Pokémon / 10) + 5, rounded down.
This is obviously has to be done for every alive, non statused party member. Any STAB on Beat Up is only relevant for the user of the move and is applied to the TOTAL BASE POWER of the move.

Counting a full team available for Beat Up, this means you have a guaranteed 30 base power (5x6) and the rest is up to the teammates.
This makes calcing opposing Beat Up an absolute pain because you need to know every party member and be very quick if the battle has a timer on.
It's important to know that, most likely, Beat Up's base power on an average team that would use Beat Up is between Knock Off's and Triple Axel's.

If you do a quick backwards calc you'll realise that for beat up to be 97 base power, the team should have an average base attack stat of 111. This is because 30 is guaranteed, thus 67 is up to the rest of the team, which means the combined base attacks of the team is 670, which divided by 6 gives you 111 (you can take this shortcut because maths works that way). It may seem a lot, but any kind of physical offense easily dwarfs this average base attack stat, especially because Kartana and melmetal exist, pult/Koko are good special attackers with high base attack, lando has a casual 85% usage and base 145 attack stat and even random ass support mons like tornt still have base 105.

For beat up to reach triple axel's bp of 120 it needs an absolutely ridiculous AVERAGE base attack stat 150 between 6 Pokémon. Spoiler: you are not reaching that level of power with any kind of viable team.

Basically, beat up is 99% of the time a stronger knock off and 100% of the time a weaker, dark type triple axel.
For a quick calc, calc the total base attack of one's team, then divide it by 10 and subsequently add 30. This is a high estimate because it eliminates every single point round down per each Mon, but it's also easy to compensate that because you can round down the base attack of each Mon before adding them up. For example, kart would have base 180 and lando base 140.

TL;DR calcing beat up is mildly annoying, but annoying nontheless
Wrote this while driving through traffic so 1 forgive some errors and 2 don't try this at home, I'm hella trained at this because of my job but don't do this anyway.

Crawdaunt @ Choice Band / Life Orb
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Aqua Jet
- Knock Off
- Crabhammer
- Crunch / Swords Dance

GOAT is a check. It is able to eat any single attack weavile has and OHKO in return. Furthermore, Aqua Jet can do serious to fatal damage (with rain support), preventing Weavile from sweeping.

252+ Atk Choice Band Adaptability Crawdaunt Crabhammer vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Weavile in Rain: 724-852 (257.6 - 303.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Adaptability Crawdaunt Aqua Jet vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Weavile: 192-228 (68.3 - 81.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Adaptability Crawdaunt Aqua Jet vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Weavile in Rain: 290-342 (103.2 - 121.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Adaptability Crawdaunt Crabhammer vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Weavile: 419-494 (149.1 - 175.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Adaptability Crawdaunt Aqua Jet vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Weavile: 169-200 (60.1 - 71.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Adaptability Crawdaunt Aqua Jet vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Weavile in Rain: 252-299 (89.6 - 106.4%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO

252 Atk Choice Band Weavile Triple Axel (40 BP) (3 hits) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Crawdaunt: 159-189 (59.5 - 70.7%) -- approx. 2HKO
252 Atk Choice Band Weavile Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Crawdaunt: 127-150 (47.5 - 56.1%) -- 84% chance to 2HKO

Toxapex @ Rocky Helmet / Black Sludge
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Knock Off / Scald
- Recover
- Haze
- Toxic Spikes / Toxic / Scald

Like most other physical attackers that dont have a Super Effective move vs it, The Pex is a very good switch in to Banded Weavile, as it's high defenses means that it can easily take hits from Weavile, and then proceed to either remove it's Band with Knock Off, or fish for the Scald burn. However, a strong enough Beat Up can reliably 2HKO Pex early on, and so should be paired with a Dark resist. Later on in the game, some of Weavile's teammates will probably have fainted, making Beat Up weaker. In addition, Pex can heal with Regenerator, allowing it to switch in on Weavile multiple times. Overall, Toxapex is a Counter to Banded Weavile

  • 252+ Atk Choice Band Weavile Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Toxapex: 132-156 (43.4 - 51.3%) -- 4.7% chance to 2HKO
  • 252+ Atk Choice Band Weavile Triple Axel (40 BP) (3 hits) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Toxapex: 81-99 (26.6 - 32.5%) -- approx. 34.3% chance to 4HKO after Black Sludge recovery
  • 252+ Atk Choice Band Weavile Beat Up vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Toxapex: 162-192 (53.2 - 63.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery (120BP Beat Up)
  • 252+ Atk Choice Band Weavile Beat Up vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Toxapex: 135-160 (44.4 - 52.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Black Sludge recovery (100BP Beat Up)
  • 0 SpA Toxapex Scald vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Weavile: 60-72 (21.3 - 25.6%) -- 0.5% chance to 4HKO

:sm/incineroar:
Incineroar @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Knock Off
- Overheat
- Parting Shot
- Toxic

While not that popular in OU, Incineroar does a decent job at checking Weavile. It has Intimidate to nullify its Choice Band, it resists both its STAB and threatens heavy damage with Overheat, if not an OHKO. It can then proceed to knock off the incoming Pokémon's item, toxic it or pivot out with parting shot. However, it hates it's Heavy-Duty Boots being knocked off by Weavile since now it is vulnerable to all entry hazards, especially rocks. Moreover it doesn't have any form of recovery meaning that in the long game Incineroar is gonna get worn down fast.

So, Incineroar is a Check to Weavile.

:incineroar:
0 SpA Incineroar Overheat vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Weavile: 266-314 (94.6 - 111.7%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO
0 SpA Incineroar Overheat vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Weavile: 266-314 (94.6 - 111.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
:weavile:
-1 252 Atk Choice Band Weavile Triple Axel (40 BP) (3 hits) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Incineroar: 72-87 (18.2 - 22%) -- approx. possible 5HKO
-1 252 Atk Choice Band Weavile Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Incineroar: 58-69 (14.7 - 17.5%) -- possible 6HKO
-1 252 Atk Choice Band Weavile Ice Shard vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Incineroar: 24-29 (6 - 7.3%) -- possibly the worst move ever
-1 252 Atk Choice Band Weavile Triple Axel (40 BP) (3 hits) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Incineroar: 72-87 (18.2 - 22%) -- approx. 99.9% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock
-1 252 Atk Choice Band Weavile Knock Off vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Incineroar: 39-46 (9.8 - 11.6%) -- possible 7HKO after Stealth Rock
