LC Starly

[OVERVIEW]
Starly's Speed, while acceptable, is not enough to compensate for its poor defensive stats and reliance on recoil moves that leave it exceedingly frail. Although it has coverage options in Hidden Power Grass and Heat Wave, Starly's horrid Special Attack renders these moves ineffective and non-threatening. Furthermore, a weakness to Stealth Rock hurts Starly's already low longevity. For these reasons, a myriad of Flying-types all outclass Starly: Doduo possesses higher Speed and Attack stats, Wingull threatens Rock types with its Water typing, and Vullaby provides defensive utility or better offensive presence with its well-rounded stats and movepool.

[SET]
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Brave Bird
move 2: Double-Edge
move 3: U-turn
move 4: Heat Wave / Hidden Power Grass
item: Choice Scarf
ability: Reckless
nature: Naive
evs: 36 HP / 236 Atk / 36 SpA / 196 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Starly functions best as a revenge killer; a Choice Scarf set outspeeds the entire unboosted metagame. However, Starly is still often unable to OHKO checks like Foongus with its coverage moves, or tank a hit due to its low HP. Doduo, Rufflet, and other Choice Scarfed Flying-types all perform Starly's job in a more complete fashion.

evs: 236 Atk/ 36 SpA or 36 Def / 196 Spe
Quick note that this isn't a format you can leave in, the import won't accept the "or" in there. Also, unless you run HP Grass, there's no reason you couldn't run both.

I'd suggest doing a evs: 36 HP / 236 Atk / 36 SpA / 196 Spe spread though, gives you 21 HP so you can come in on rocks four times instead of three before fainting and has the 36 SpA for the import set with Heat Wave.

mb on formatting, edited
should i just get rid of the jolly nature then and have it run naive?

edit: formatting changed, steel wing gone

I don't think Steel Wing does anything important that HP Grass or Starly's STABs don't, so it's probably safe to remove both it and the Jolly nature. It hits Archen and Amaura but those aren't particularly common Pokemon, as Fairy-types get hit harder by Brave Bird/Double Edge, and Onix/Tirtouga get hit much harder by HP Grass.

Formatting stuff - you'll want to have a space before and after the / in moves (so formatted as "Heat Wave / Hidden Grass") and EVs need to be written in the order HP / Atk / Def / SpA / SpD / Spe, so switch the 36 HP to the beginning.

OVERVIEW
Taillow can also make use of both special coverage and high offensive presence thanks to Guts, hitting things harder. Maybe mention it.
Mention that it's easy to revenge kill it and that normal priority attacks deal too much damage.

SET
Looks fine.

SET COMMENTS

overview: starly's most direct comparison is doduo; it actually hits about as hard as doduo bc of reckless. starly's access to u-turn isn't enough to make up for its lack of coverage and middling speed requiring the use of a choice scarf. the only bird you need to mention here is doduo as it's the mon that directly outclasses starly. mention that starly is frail and easily worn down as well.

set comments: use "Stealth Rock" instead of "rocks". don't mention honedge it's bad

[OVERVIEW]
  • Starly isn't too frail for the meta...it is too slow and underwhelming in power to make up for its frailty.
  • Change the second sentence to specify that all its coverage moves are special, and its special attack stat is atrocious
  • Also talk about how Doduo is WAY more powerful and has better coverage options.
  • I'd also compare to Wingull, which has better typing and coverage, and to Vullaby, which offers some defensive utility.
  • Don't include the last sentence, it isn't true
[SET COMMENTS]
  • "revenge sweeper" isn't a thing...do you mean "revenge killer"?
  • Again, this is wayy too in-depth on set comments for a pseudo-analysis. Spend 1 sentence summarizing what the set aims to do (outspeed the unboosted meta with a Choice Scarf and try and do as much damage with STABs and coverage moves), and 1 or two describing why it fails to do this
Again, this rewrite is substantial enough that I don't feel comfortable stamping it yet. Message me on Discord when your changes are implemented and we can talk.

Starly functions best as a revenge killer,(RC) as,(AC) with a Choice Scarf,(AC) Starly outspeeds the entire unboosted metagame. However, Starly is still too weak, often unable to OHKO checks such as like Foongus,(RC) and often cannot tank a hit due to its low HP. (The 'and' in this sentence is being used to conjoin two verbs in the present tense ('OHKO' counts as a verb here), so what has to follow after the 'and' is a verb in the present tense, hence why I removed the 'often cannot' as it didn't fit the format. This way, the 'and' does not need any commas, keeping the sentence from sounding choppy with lots of comma breaks.) Doduo, Rufflet, and other Choice Scarfed birds with scarves all perform Starly's job in a more complete fashion.

amcheck implented, although the changes to the first sentence of set comments didn't feel right IMO. I got rid of "as with" and threw in a semicolon instead, which feels much more natural.
