Sugar "addiction"

I just stopped. I guess I have more willpower than most cause I just stopped. My coach said no more soda and candy and that was it for me.

Sugar is addictive. It causes the brain to release endorphins and we become dependent on those endorphins. That is why some emo kids continue to cut themselves. The pain releases endorphins. Well, technically, we are addicted to the endorphins.

Doesn't your brain release endorphins when you are scared? If so, then wouldn't people become addicted to scary movies?

I mean, I used to watch scary movies all the time, and then I just stopped. If what you are saying is true then I should have had a hard time with quitting, but I didn't.

I thought the brain released them to calm you down once you are scared... hmm I will have to look this up.

I think it releases adrenaline not endorphins. You become addicted to the adrenaline because you cannot really be hurt by what is in the movie. And endorphins are not released when you are happy. It is the other way around. You are happy when endorphins are released.

Wait, I always thought that dopamine was the happy neurotransmitter, adrenaline was the fight or flight transmitter, and endorphins were like a "you just ran a lot or broke your leg or something so I'm gonna effectively give you some morphine and dull the pain" thing.

On topic: I'm pretty sure that I'm more addicted to music than to sugar, and I'm not listening to any music now. After all, I don't drink much soda.

Yeah, sugar can easily be obtained from fruit. I have really taken to tangerines lately, they are less squirt-juicy than oranges and I don't have to peel using a knife.

I try to keep myself disciplined by forcing myself to choose only some things to indulge in for periods of time. I ate candy ALL the time, and I gave it up for a year with no weaning period. Likewise, I gave up soda this September, although this one is going to be more or less permanent, not just a year, as soda is corrosive and awful for you. I had no 'withdrawl' at all though, so I would have to say people who feel addicted to sugar are just weak willed!
