Team Fortress 2 - The Official Discussion Thread

after six hours i finally got a new weapon, the dead ringer.
and i was actually worth it, because people are trying to get the taunt after killing achievement and you just sneak behind and stab them.
Still waiting for the ambassdor though

I absolutely hate how it is all chance based now. It ruins the only reason achievements existed. Not to mention with everyone having different unlockable weapons, it decreases the skill involved.

Absolutely disagree with you. The weapons ruined the achievements with people farming achievements just to achieve the weapons. Personally, I think they should change it so you get a chance of getting an item drop with each point you earn. The randomly receiving thing doesn't make sense at all. I don't know why Valve did it considering they're usually pretty good at knowing how to balance rewards in their games. I assume they'll patch it next time.

Too bad this came with the update of one of the two classes I actually play! Spy and Medic are the only achievements I'm going to get most of =P Medic is the only class I have weapons for. I have 9 achievements with Spy, which is more than my Heavy, Pyro, and Scout combined.

Of the new weapons, I have gotten the Dead Ringer and the Jarate. Thoughts on both of them:

Dead Ringer: Suprisingly, this thing is actually useful. I went in with the mentality that between the Cloak and Dagger and the original watch, this was by far the worst. I now see that this thing is quite useful. I found it really good on CTF_Well, where I got it, as you can cross the map without any issues by just holding it out, and it's especially useful in reaching the intel. If the intel isn't there, you can literally just stand there holding the DR, and if you get shot, they leave the area. In one instance I dropped the intel as a scout was chasing me, and activated the DR, and he went and did something else, giving me an easy pick up.

Jarate: The recharge is a bummer, but it seems pretty good so far. It gives mini crits on a target, reveals spies, and puts out flames. It's superior to the SMG, imo, by a longshot. As long as you are capable enough to do unscoped body shots, this thing is great.

Anyway, still a pain trying to get everything.
The TF2 site mentions that they will be tweaking the random drops so its more likely the longer you play or more points or something. I don't quite remember. Check it out.

played for about 5 hours today, and only managed to get the razorback (which i got within ten minutes!), and after that, only the bonk drink, possibly the most useless of all the new weapons so far, and a kritzkreig. hoping any bugs in the rng are fixed soon...

on the whole though, i really dont mind this system. ive ehard alot of complaining about it, but i really like the fact that ill be obtaining these weapons slowly over the enxt few weeks or so, which means the update experience lasts alot longer. it doesnt really bother me that i cant have them now, because all the other new content is absolutely incredible. sawmill and nucleus are decent maps, and look fantastic, but pipeline is where it's at. i played this map for about 3 hours straight in a 24/7 server x)

as far as achievements go, ive unlocked every sniper achievement i can without the huntsman and jarate (fuck there are alot of jarate achievements) except for kill 1000 guys, and i really loved them. i cant help but think that i should have 2 unlocks by now with the old system though ;(

spy achievements are harder to get on the whole i think. theres more than one large incremental achievement (backstab 1000 guys, sap 1000 buildings, stab 50 guys on control points), and in a couple of hours i only managed to get a handful of the easier ones such as killing an engineer as he builds, or identity theft, which is probably one of my favourite achivements to date.

really cant wait for the ambassador to fuck up some snipers

Wow, first thing I see in this forum and it's TF2! I only play this on XBL (so no updates...sad face...) but still, quality game. Gamertag is the same as forum name, so feel free to add me if anyone XBL's too, since my games are never laggy =P

I'd say that this new system is definitely better than the old one. Achievement servers were a pretty clear sign that the old system was poor. I think I had all heavy items, 2 medic items, 2 pyro items, and 0 scout items. It really bummed me that I would never have the chance to play with the other items (especially the scout ones), but thankfully they changed it.

Restricting the items to only the most hardcore players was a poor choice, and the game will be a lot more fun when there is the opportunity to use all of the new weapons for each class.

If achievement servers are clear signs that the old system was poor, I don't want to know what they point towards the new system =p I wanted to play TF2 earlier but 70% of my friends list who were "playing" were actually afk and in the map "achievement_idle".

The old system was horrible, but the new one isn't much better. And sadly, this is the first class since Medic I'd have actually received weapons through the milestones =( I'm at 14 achievements with Spy.

Well there's still going to be some people who will go to achievemen_idle or whatever, but for honest players it definitely makes it better. I don't want to have to go to achievement_scout just so I can try the scout unlockables since I would never unlock them normally. I would much rather see everyone get all the weapons without having to resort to achievement servers, which is what this has done (well once they fix the hand out times)

Same here. The dead ringer is really nifty and probably my favorite out of the spy watches. (Actually, it's probably my favorite unlockable from this update, period.) Apparently disguising as a member of your own team also does not reveal that you are a spy when they "kill" you, so disguising as scout might be better for infiltration. If they see an enemy spy "die," they might check around to see if he really is dead. However, if someone shoots an enemy scout and sees him die, they're less likely to be suspicious.

Some people have already noticed that Ambassador headshots actually do LESS damage than bodyshots at close range. Voyager I recently made a post on gotfrag explaining why this happens:
Jarate is actually kinda broken.

In addition to the 135% damage, the min-crits override falloff. This sounds like a good thing, except falloff also equates to bonus damage up to 150% of a weapons base damage at very close ranges. This means, for example, that a close range scatter-shot will actually do slightly less damage if the target has been Jarate'd. Ambassador mini-crits work exactly the same way; headshots do 135% base damage regardless of range, but close range bodyshots do up to 150%, which is why close range bodyshots currently do more damage.

However, this is still fairly viable in competion, because rockets and stickies that are less than five seconds old (and needles) receive a reduced bonus that only scales up to 125% (though they still receive the full range penalty down to 50% damage), so they'll get a slight boost regardless of range. Grenades, the sniper shots, huntsman arrows, and stickies older than five seconds ignore falloff entirely and will similarly always benefit from the 135% damage. Just note that for rockets this means they'll be doing 135% of the base value of 90, not 135% of 108, so you will not one-shot Scouts.

The only mainstream competitive weapons that will deal reduced damage due to Jarate are the Soldier's shotgun and the Scout's scattergun and pistol. Since everyone hates Scouts, this probably won't be too big a deal before it's fixed.

In addition to all this, enemies affected by Jarate deal significantly reduced damage to themselves. This is actually quite irritating, since it reduces the height of rocket jumps (knockback is proportional to damage). I haven't tested this formally, but when I attempted to do a standard rocket jump while Jarate'd my health went down to the low 180's instead of the usual 156 and I didn't go nearly as high as I intended.

TLDR: if you want to annoy your own Scouts, Jarate a Soldier when they get close to him so he takes less damage both from them and his own rockets.

Hell YES. I lived through the entire 3rd round of defence on Dustbowl without dying as Medic :D Got so scared at some points with like 12 hp left. Hope it saves the stat. My engineer stat from a few days ago didn't =/

Yeah, I'm usually the guy who goes and does one thing then dies.

Why are none of my stats being saved? =/ I beat engineer and medic records for myself but it's back to what it used to be.

Sooo.... since my computer has been out of commission I decided to go down to the local Gaming Center and play a few hours.

Man, this update was amazing. I was more interested in the maps than the actual additions to the classes. I'm loving the maps and the new weapons were cool (though I only got the Huntsman with the new system).

I tried PLR_Pipeline, PL_Hoodoo, Arena_Sawmill
I liked em all but I really really like Pipeline. Such an awesome set of maps. My favorite is the race up the hill. Its a shame that they don't last longer. Its such a scramble to the carts and then stopping people is just hilarious. I'm psyched for additonal PLR maps

Hoodoo was ok. Its a cool community map, my only gripe with it was that its quiet the stalemate with 16 vs 16 (the types of games I like to play in).

Sawmill was cool. Really liked the weather affects and the atmosphere were cool. I'm just not a huge fan of the Arena game type, but hey, thats me.

Since I didn't get to play with any of the unlocks I wanted to (aka the Spy ones), I was kinda bummed out. I'm not really convinced this new system is all that smart. I saw a bunch of Idle servers which again, defeat the purpose, but hey, to each their own. I really really happy this the amount of content that they put into this update. It ceases to amaze me how much time they spend on it. Anyway, when I finally get my comp fixed (which could take awhile), I'd love to play some games with some of you guys.

New update adds milestones for Sniper and Spy. As much as I dislike achievement-based unlocks, at least I'm at 20 Spy achievements so I should get something when I get home and log onto TF2. Then 2 more achievements for the last item. Unless Dead Ringer is the last item... Then I'd be golden =D

Thanks to the new milestones, I was finally able to get the damn Huntsman. >:O I just spent like three games going around spamming jarate and trying to Kukri people.

jarate chop is a great achievement B)

also yeahh cloak and dagger! was the only one i didnt have already and from the little ive played since i got it its pretty fun

I have everything but the Ambassador, and I havent tried doing milestones yet. I'll work away at that, as it seems to be a cool gun n_____n

You should already have 22 spy achievements. 20 regular achievements plus the first two milestones puts you at 22. That was how they intended it; the milestones really are 10, 15, and 20, it's just that the last two are upped to 16 and 22 because milestones one and two count toward your total achievement count.

Anyway, I'm glad that now there's a reliable way to get the new unlocks so that I don't have to worry about the new weapons being banned in gathers; CEVO should reverse their decision to ban the new unlockables as well.

Heh, yeah, I logged in and got all of them at once. This update has lower milestones as well. It's 5, 11, and 17.

Cloak and Dagger is so fun =)

Got that. $$$ Didn't get the "extinguish a burning teammate" one after extinguishing a burning teammate multiple times. -_- But I also somehow got the "kill an enemy within a second of the gate opening" achievement by Kukri-ing a Spy down halfway through a Granary match ???

And EZ Esc, the weapons are the first milestones.
