Team Serpent Scorpion
Intro: Hello all, and welcome to my third "Rate My Team". After i retired my old team, i stopped playing competitive for a while and i just lurked around these forums and helped people out, and contributed to the community of Smogon. That, i still do, but after rating a lot of teams, i felt a need to get back into this because i remembered how fun it was.
So i started looking around, searching for someone to base my team off of. If you are all saying "wow, you're a n00b, everyone uses Gyarados" this is not true. For one thing, Gyarados is a great Pokemon and we all know that. For the second thing, I did not start with Gyarados for my main sweeper. When i had started this team, i didn't even have a main part of the team. This team was supposed to be a test team for a new moveset I thought of for Gliscor. After realizing that i had created something that was actually worthwhile, I did need a main sweeper. I looked up a bunch of Pokemon, and out of all of them, Gyarados worked out the best in the end. They cover eachothers weaknesses nicely, and every Pokemon on this team covers another Pokemon's weakness to something. But, just like any other team, im sure i have weaknesses.
Before i start talking about the team and whatnot, I picked the name "Serpent Scorpion" because they were the first 2 members of my team. Without farther adieu, here's an in depth look at the team!

Gliscor @ Leftovers *** SatansBat
Ability: Hyper Cutter
Ev's: 252 Hp/ 80 Atk/ 104 Def/ 72 Spe
Impish nature ( + Def, - Spatk)
- Stealth Rock
- Roost
- Earthquake
- Knock Off
Phew, this is a change of pace compared to the Swampert i use on a lot of my teams. I've always tried to use this guy as a lead, but it never always worked out, due to todays rapidly changing metagame. But, just yesterday when i came across the "New and creative moveset/ev spread" thread (Mk.4) I started thinking about Gliscor, and what i could do to make a lead set. So, i started looking up some of the most common leads stats (Metagross, Infernape, ect.) and found that a Gliscor could not outspeed all of them, but still had a STAB move that could destroy the majority of them. Earthquake. I thought "With the right Ev's and moves, this thing could be pretty good". So i eventually came up with an Ev spread/ moveset that works, and i'm pretty proud of myself. One last thing before i go on to the Ev's. I chose Hyper Cutter because that means i can take an intimidate from Gyarados, or any other Pokemon with that ability that i might come across. Sand veil is only good if you happen to play a sandstorm team, so i just went with Hyper Cutter for that reason.
The Ev's that i gave Gliscor are unique, and they're like that for a reason. Playing a lead role makes Gliscor take on a whole other view at things, so it has to change around a little bit. 252 Hp is to max out his mediocre Hp and make sure he can survive a few hits and then just roost them off. 80 Attack is on him so he can get some power in his stats, making his Earthquake an even more potent threat against enemys. It brings his attack up to 246, which isn't that impressive. at all. This is why i considered a positive nature for attack, but i felt that as a bulky lead he needs to have the ability to take more hits than he can throw out. But, if you ever use this spread, feel free to use an adamant nature, but i still think impish is better for this role. The 104 Ev's in defense bring me to a number of 343. Thats pretty nice. Thanks to Gliscors unique typing and high defense stat, he can take a lot of blows from other Pokemon without having to sacrifice to many Ev's into the defense stat itself, which is a major plus. After i had done all this, I had some Ev's to play around with, so i put them (72 Ev's) into speed. Not just because they were there, if that was the case then they would've gone into defense. I put them there so he can outrun and 2HKO positive natured base 61 speed pokemon, (bye bye, tyranitar) and outrun nuetral natured base 70's with 252 Ev's in speed at the maximum. Over all, i really like this spread as it brings a lot more to Gliscor as a lead than one of the standard sets would.
The lead-Gliscors moveset isn't really all that different than a regular one would be. But as on any other Pokemon, every move has it's own purpose, and is there for it's own reason. To start off, Stealth rock is the crux of this set. It sets up the residual damage for my team, and it helps on getting a little damage here and there. Roost is a must have move for Gliscor, because of his Hp, it is important for him to stay in good status all the time, and thats what roost does. Earthquake is my main go-to move for attacking, and it gets STAB, making it even more powerful. Earthquake on Gliscor is great because metagross, infernape, lucario, jirachi, and tyranitar all are weak to it, and they are all pretty commonly used leads. Knock off is awesome because it takes away the opponents item, and inflicts damage at the same time. It helps with sashers, and choice users, and also screws up walls, because it knocks off leftovers, too.
I chose the name "SatansBat" because he has little devil horns, and he looks like a bat scorpion..thing.

Raikou @ Life Orb *** Sabretooth
Ability: Pressure
Ev's: 4 Hp/ 252 Spatk/ 252 Spe
Timid nature (+ Spe, - Attack)
-Substitute
-Thunderbolt
-Signal Beam
-Hidden Power Grass
I found this bad boy while lurking around in the creative ev's/moves thread also. I never really liked Raikou aside from how he looked, but after i tried him with this set, i really like him. This is basicly the CM set, but with a little twist. Substitute is to trick your opponent into thinking your going to calm mind, forcing them to bring out their swampert or something else this beast can destroy with one of it's other moves. Timid nature is to get the maximum speed possible. This thing is highly underestimated in OU gameplay, but it works really well, i can't stress that enough. Pressure helps me in stall wars, even though Raikou won't be doing much stalling at all. I would've put leftovers on him for more durability, which i should, but it helps get an extra boost of power considering this set does not have calm mind in it.
Ok, onto the Ev's. This is a very simple spread, and theres not much to say, but let me just ell you some numbers while im at it. 252 special attack puts me at 328 for that, and 252 speed puts me at 360. Now, you might be saying "Dude, you're one point off" but remember, he has hidden power grass, which takes away an IV from special attack and speed.
As for hsi moves, they can do a number of things. Substitute is for getting free moves in without taking damage, and if i were to be setting up, which im not. Thunderbolt takes out gyarados and other things of the water and flying types. Signal beam is mainly for taking out celebi and tyranitar. These are both very commonly used pokemon, and celebi can be a pain to take out with the whole "Leech-seed/Sub/recover" thing it has going on. Hidden power grass can take out hippowdon and swampert with ease, and it's so perfect on raikou because electric types have ground types all over them. Well, in order to show you what the moves can really do on the feild, i have some damge calculations here. Credit for the calcs and for the set itself goes all to Rey Scarface.
The name "Sabretooth" is because even though he's a "legendary dog" he still looks like a cat to me.

Registeel @ Leftovers *** Stubbylegs
ability: clear body
Ev's: 252 Hp/ 168 Atk/ 88 Def
Impish nature (+ Def, - Spatk)
-Toxic
-Explosion
-Ice punch
-Earthquake
Since the metagame is primarily physical, and Gliscor might not last to long, my team needs another physical wall. I started looking around in OU, and the one that suited my team well the most was Skarmory. But, he lacked the ability to take Salamence down when locked into an outrage, which is hard to do. So i looked the OU tier over again. Nothing. This brought me to the idea of going into the UU tier, since i love UU because theres a ton of different pokemon in that tier that can play the roles of OU pokemon (Skarmory in this case) better and more effectively. I came across registeel, and figured out they have a set for OU on there. It had ice punch, explosion, toxic and earthquake, just like mine does, but the point is, this thing is better than skarmory at walling! It doesn't have the ability to phaze, but it is one hell of a wall. It has 364 Hp at maximum, which is 31 points higher than skarmory, and it has 438 defense with a positive nature, which is 22 points higher than Skarms defense. Another great thing about him is that he doesn't have low special defence like skarmory, which allows him to serve somewhat of a dual wall.
Ok, lets get talking about his Ev's. 252 Hp is to max out his Hp to a decent number of 364. 168 Attack EV's bring my attack to around 228 if i can recall right, and thats not an impressive number, but it helps get the job done when registeel has to attemt to take a threat out. His main job as a member on my team other than a secondary physical wall is to anhilate a salamence thats locked in an outrage. He also makes for a good zapdos/ latias counter with these Ev's. Lastly, the 88 Defense is to get a very nice stat of 393. These ev's ensure that (counting stealth rock) you will never get 1HKO'd by a adamant life orb +1 salamences earthquake. This is a pretty big stat for a pokemon, and being able to get that big of a stat with such little Ev investment is really kick ass.
Registeel has a pretty good movepool, actually. I like the fact that if someones using him as set up fodder, you can just explode right in their face. Anyways, Toxic is great because it's important to have at least one pokemon on your team that can spread status around. It wittles down the opponents health, dealing more every time, which is great because used in combonation with gliscors knock off, it can destroy walls tanking abilities, cuasing them to faint quicker than usual with no leftovers recovery to aid them. Explosion is awesome for what i mentioned before, and because if i have registeel and another pokemon left, and the opponent has one left that registeel or my other pokemon cannot take out on it's own, i can explode, still have one pokemon left, and win the game. Thats pure awesome-ness. Earthquake is mainly for heatran, and for other steels that stand in my teams way. Last, but not least, ice punch provides me with coverage twords flyers like zapdos, latias, and salamence, and ground types like hippowdon, and gliscor.
The nickname "stubbylegs" is just funny.

Heracross @ Choice Scarf *** BeatlesPWN
Ability: Guts
Ev's: 252 Atk/ 4 Def/ 252 Spe
Adamant nature ( + Atk, - Spatk)
-Megahorn
-Close combat
-Stone Edge
-Night Slash
Scarf-cross has been used for ages, and it's worked its way all the way through, still coming out as the champ. These things are deadly when used right, and they have a nice combination of moves as well as a nice movepool. The point is that, all in all, heracross is an amazing pokemon. I'm sure you all know this. Anyway, enough with all the nonsense talk and lets get in depth with him. The choice scarf boosts him up enough to outbeat anything besides pokemon that are scarfed in heatrans range of stats with an adamant nature. I chose an adamant nature because i get all that speed while boasting an impressive 383 attack stat. But if i were to get a jolly nature, i would only outspeed a few more things, and thats useless because im not using this as a full out revenge killer and i want it to have the most power it can have with the scarf on it. Guts is cool because if i switch in on a status-er then i can begin to sweep and it's like having an extra swords dance everytime i attack. With that and the amount of speed it has with the scarf, this thing is friggen lethal.
His ev's are the "all out" way, because they make both of the stats as high as they can be. This brings me to 383 attack, and 295 speed. The speed gets a choice scarf boost and goes even higher. With 383 attack, heracross can rip through it's opponents like a candy bar, having the movepool to back it up.
Ok, heracross has an awesome combonation of types (bug/fighting) and it's good that you can make exelent use out of it. Megahorn and close combat are there because they are both STABed base 120 power moves, and they can leave a dent in almost anything. Megahorn also deals with rock, dark and ghost pokemon.Stone Edge takes care of those stupid flyers, and since im scarfed, i can outspeed the quick ones, and 2HKO the majoraty of his counters with it. Night slash is for the psychics like azelf, alakazam, and latias. Now, most of the psychics will expect a pursuit and stay in to not give it the extra power boost. When they decide to stay in, pursuit doesn't really do that much to them. Thats why you've got to have night slash>pursuit. Night slash can 1HKO the majority of heracross' psychic foes, and the fact that they stay in 99% of the time, is awesome.
"BeatlesPWN" is because he's not used as often as he should be, but he's still just as deadly as he was in the 3d generation metagame.

Azelf @ Life Orb *** Genie
Ability: Levitate
Ev's: 4 Hp/ 252 Spatk/ 252 Spe
Timid nature ( + Spe, - Atk)
-Nasty Plot
-Psychic
-Flamethrower
-Hidden Power Fighting
This thing does a lot for a little guy. Threatening to 3HKO blissey after 1 nasty plot ( with a life orb) is crazy. Once this guy has a plot up, not much stands in its way. The reason i like him so much for this team is because unlike alakazam, he can avoid ground moves, and has a much more diverse movepool. I mean, i love alakazam, but this guy is just superior to him on this team since i have 2 ground weaknesses. This things only real problem with sweeping is scizor (heracross>scizor >:p) but flamethrower can take care of it. After a boost he is capable of also 2HKOing snorlax with a boosted psychic, which is complete ownage on his part.
Once again, the Ev's given give me the all out approach, bringing me to 349 special attack and 361 speed with a timid nature. It allows me to tie with anything base 115 and outspeed anything below that. The life orb boosts my special attack up higher, and paired with nasty plot, it's a great combination.
For his moves, Nasty plot boosts up my special attack two stages, making it really high, and not much can hinder my sweep after i get a plot up. Psychic is my main attack since it's STAB and the most powerful move on it's set. It rips through fighting, grass, and poison types and puts a nice dent in anything else that does'nt resist it. Flamethrower is to bust those steels and bug types, mainly scizor, considering that scizor is one of the only ones that can hinder my sweep. Hidden power fighting takes care of the likes of heatran, other steels and normal types.
"Genie" just fits him, no real reason to explain.
---
Gyarados @ Leftovers *** Jaws
Ability: Intimidate
Ev's: 156 Hp/ 108 Atk/ 100 Def/ 144 Spe
Adamant nature ( + Atk, - Spatk)
-Taunt
-Dragon Dance
-Waterfall
-Stone Edge
Gyarados is a love/hate kind of pokemon. You can like it so much but then get completely wrecked by one. The plan on my team is to destroy someone with this beast. He's a great pokemon becuase of his ability to be so versitile, and because he has resistances to fighting, ground, bug, grass, and many more. My aim of using this set instead of using the "Offensive" set is to get a slower, bulkier, sweeper that can take a number of hits, build it's stats up, then go for a clean sweep. Intimidate makes pokemon like scizor or lucario attemting to beat me useless, because im already resistant to all or the majority of their attacks. The adamant nature is to get the most power i can with these ev's because i'm not putting 252 Ev's into attack. Leftovers is just for regaining HP while attempting to set up for my sweep. The reason why i used a gyarados is because it seemed as though him and gliscor went hand in hand weakness-wise, and had a good movepool combination together, which is nice.
Ok, as for the Ev's, 156 Hp bring him to 370 Hp This ensured that he is never 2HKO'd by a timid heatrans fire blast factoring in stealth rock damage. The 108 attack ensures that gyarados always 2HKO's 252 def/ 148 Hp Blissey, factoring in stealth rock and leftovers. The 144 Speed Ev's are so gyarados can outspeed gengar and any other postive natured base 110's after a dragon dance. After all of that, there is still 100 Ev's left to distribute, which means it's going to go into defense in order to effectively tank hits from the likes of scizor, lucario, heracross, ect. while setting up for my sweep. Taunt is vewry useful in the process of this because it prevents me from being phazed away.
For Gyarados' moves, taunt helps me not get phazed out of the battle arena, as well as not being crippled by a status, which basicly makes this set/ spread what it his and how effective it is. Dragon dance is so i can boost my attack and speed and get ready for a sweep, thats where leftovers and taunt come into play. Waterfall severely dents or faints anything not resistant to it, and 5HKO's skarmory after a dragon dance at the most. Stone edge helps out against bulky waters If they lack hp electric such as suicune, and milotic.
I named him "Jaws" because he's truly an untamed beast, like a shark.
---
Team synergy: Here is where i'm going to explain to you who takes what kind of attack for who on this team. Skip ahead if you already have an idea and you don't want to read this.
1) Gliscor: Registeel and gyarados take ice attacks for him, and gyarados takes the water attacks.
2) Raikou: Gliscor, gyarados, and azelf take ground attacks for him. Sometimes heracross can be switched in too.
3) Registeel: Gliscor takes fighting/ground moves for him, along with gyarados, azelf, and sometimes heracross. Gyarados takes fire attacks.
4) Heracross: Gyarados, registeel, and gliscor take flying attacks. Gyarados takes fire attacks.
5) Azelf: Gliscor, heracross, and gyarados take bug attacks, while i don't have a dedicated pokemon to send in on dark types.
6) Gyarados: Gliscor takes electric moves.
---
Well, that was the team. I know that it has some problems with it, but with the help of some good players/ raters that know what they're talking about, i should be able to fix this and make is better, and more effective. So any comments, suggestions, and full out rates would be very appreciated and helpful twords me, thanks in advance!

Well, that was the team. I know that it has some problems with it, but with the help of some good players/ raters that know what they're talking about, i should be able to fix this and make is better, and more effective. So any comments, suggestions, and full out rates would be very appreciated and helpful twords me, thanks in advance!

All bulky waters barring swampert are handled by raikou. I know this could be a problem, any suggestions would be nice.

Just note that there will be a section right here on how the team was made in the near future, i just don't have the time right now.
