What did Tentacool say to Tentacruel?
"You used to be cool. :("

Overview
########

Tentacruel is blessed with a great typing, having many resistances in addition to great Special Defense and Speed. It also has access to great support moves, such as Rapid Spin and Toxic Spikes. However, Tentacruel is not without its faults; it faces stiff competition from other bulky Water-type Pokemon with Rapid Spin such as Blastoise. It has a subpar Defense, little to no offensive presence, and no reliable recovery options. It also has common weaknesses to Psychic-, Ground-, and Electric-type moves. Nonetheless, Tentacruel can be a great Pokemon to use in a team.

Support
########
name: Support
move 1: Scald
move 2: Toxic Spikes / Toxic
move 3: Knock Off
move 4: Rapid Spin
ability: Liquid Ooze
item: Black Sludge
evs: 240 HP / 244 Def / 24 Spe
nature: Bold

Moves
========

Scald's burn chance can help patch up Tentacruel's poor Defense while also providing it with a reliable STAB attack. Toxic Spikes is useful for the passive damage it inflicts on grounded Pokemon. It's also the main reason why you would use Tentacruel over other Rapid Spin users. Toxic is a nice alternative, as it can inflict poison on Flying-type or Pokemon with Levitate, which are not affected by Toxic Spikes. Knock Off removes items from opposing Pokemon, which helps greatly when facing stall-based teams. Rapid Spin is obviously the most important move, and allows Tentacruel to support its team by removing entry hazards.

Set Details
========

The EV spread aims to patch up Tentacruel's lackluster Defense and increase its overall bulk, allowing it to check the majority of physical attackers in the tier such as Mienshao and Heracross. A Bold nature further increases Tentacruel's Defense and allows Tentacruel to survive many physical hits. The Speed EVs allow Tentacruel to outspeed Pokemon such as Honchkrow and attempt to burn them with Scald. Black Sludge gives Tentacruel a way to recover lost HP from switching into entry hazards or from burn damage. Liquid Ooze lets Tentacruel fare better against Leech Seed users or other Pokemon that carry draining moves because they will lose HP instead.

Usage Tips
========

Tentacruel has trouble switching into many physical moves, so be wary when switching into most physical attackers. Try not to get Tentacruel burned because it has no way of curing it without cleric support. As Tentacruel forces quite a bit of switches, using the time to set up Toxic Spikes is a good idea. If you're not running Toxic Spikes, using Scald to attempt to burn the next switch-in is a smart move, because it might cripple the Pokemon. In addition, use Rapid Spin to support your team when needed.

Team Options
========

Celebi makes an excellent partner. It has great type synergy with Tentacruel as well as access to Heal Bell to cure status that would otherwise trouble Tentacruel. Many Fire-type Pokemon appreciate Tentacruel's Rapid Spin support such as Victini, Darmanitan, Chandelure, and Entei. However, they share a Ground-type weakness with Tentacruel. Tentacruel fits well on stall-based or balanced teams because it can absorb Toxic Spikes as well as set up its own. It also provides valuable Rapid Spin support. Although Tentacruel is a great team supporter, it appreciates support as well. Due to the fact that it has no reliable recovery or any way to remove status, Florges and Umbreon make excellent partners, as they have access to Aromatherapy and Heal Bell, respectively. Jirachi also makes a good teammate because it can set up Stealth Rock as well as pass Wishes, although it shares a Ground-type weakness with Tentacruel.

Other Options
########

The ability Rain Dish can be used on Rain Dance teams, but because the weather only lasts five to eight turns, it's not really good. Acid Spray and Sludge Bomb can be used to provide Poison-type STAB, though they have little use outside of that. An offensive Rapid Spin set can be used, though Starmie and Blastoise outclass Tentacruel in that regard. Mirror Coat is an interesting option that can be run to surprise many special attackers. An Assault Vest set with the EV spread of 120 HP / 252 SpA / 120 SpD / 16 Spe can be used to further increase Tentacruel's bulk and maximize it's Special Attack, however it loses useful support moves such as Toxic and Toxic Spikes, while also lacking the passive recovery from Black Sludge. A specially defensive EV spread can also be used to allow Tentacruel to better check special attackers such as Roserade and Houndoom. Protect can be used to allow Tentacruel Toxic stall a variety of Pokemon as well as allowing it to heal itself with Black Sludge, but it's hard to find a moveslot for it. A Choice Scarf or Choice Specs set can also be used, however as stated previously, Tentacruel loses its passive recovery from Black Sludge and its ability to utilize its great support options.

Checks & Counters
########

**Jellicent** Jellicent is immune to Rapid Spin, can switch into Scald and heal itself courtesy of Water Absorb, and wear down Tentacruel with Shadow Ball. It can also Taunt Tentacruel to prevent it from setting up Toxic Spikes or stalling with Toxic.

**Toxicroak** Toxicroak absorbs Toxic Spikes, is immune to Toxic, and recovers HP when hit by Scald thanks to Dry Skin. In addition, it can Taunt Tentacruel or use it as setup fodder.

**Celebi** Celebi can use Psychic and hit Tentacruel for super effective damage and set up Nasty Plot or Calm Mind. It also doesn't care too much about Scald's burn chance thanks to Natural Cure.

**Shaymin** Similar to Celebi, Shaymin can wear out Tentacruel with Seed Flare or Psychic and does not care about Scald's burn rate thanks to Natural Cure.

**Gastrodon** Gastrodon can absorb Scald with Storm Drain and force out Tentacruel with a +1 Earth Power.

**Nidoqueen and Nidoking** Nidoking and Nidoqueen can both check Tentacruel with Earth Power, but they take a lot of damage from Scald.

**Ground-type Pokemon** Most Ground-type Pokemon such as Flygon can KO Tentacruel, but have to watch out for a super effective Scald.

**Kyurem** Kyurem takes pitiful damage from Scald, and can then proceed to use Substitute and Roost or KO Tentacruel with Earth Power.

**Hydreigon** Hydreigon, similar to Kyurem, can wear down Tentacruel with its attacks, but if it's physically based, it has to watch out for Scald's burn chance.

**Cacturne** Cacturne is immune to Scald thanks to Water Absorb and can use Tentacruel as setup fodder to set up with Swords Dance.

Yo.

I've tested out an alternative Rapid Spin set, and it's offensive. And as a disclaimer, it's able to stand on its own and perform well in comparison to Starmie and Mega Blastoise.

Tentacruel @ Assault Vest
Ability: Clear Body/Liquid Ooze
EVs: 252 SAtk / 16 Spd / 120 SDef / 120 HP
Modest/Calm Nature
- Scald
- Sludge Wave
- Giga Drain
- Rapid Spin / Mirror Coat

Comical set, spare me any and all references to famous YouTuber BlameTruth, or I will stab you in the nose. This is basically an offensively-oriented Assault Vest Tentacruel set, and very simple and straightforward. Assault Vest allows Tentacruel to expand its excellent base 120 Sp. Def to even greater levels, allowing it to tank and survive hits from even the strongest special attackers in the UU environment. Scald and Sludge Wave are obligatory STAB options that get surprisingly decent neutral coverage together, while Giga Drain allows Tentacruel to get essential recovery to keep going while also being able to take on bulky waters and/or grounds. Rapid Spin is the preferred fourth moveslot option since this allows Tentacruel to maintain some of its utility and keep your team's side clear of hazards. However, Mirror Coat is a funny as hell move that will guaranteed you one pissed off person per game, provided you bait the hit, which isn't hard, in all honesty. The 16 Speed EVs are to outrun max Speed Adamant Metagross (Obscure benchmark but you don't really have much else worth outpacing that doesn't cost you a cubic ton of speed, considering Tentacruel's already-good-as-is base 100 Speed stat), while the HP and SpD EVs are slashed since you would get identical special bulk if you ran 0 HP / 240 SpD. Having the extra HP at least gives you a bit more bulk on both sides of the defensive spectrum, which is always welcome.

Of course, like any Assault Vest user, you don't just shove this guy into random hits and expect him to live and kill things back in return. It takes execution, and primarily would be used as an offensive pivot of sorts who can sponge a hit, throw one back, and go from there. Most of the Pokemon Tentacruel pivots on are the specially-oriented bulky Water-, Grass-, and Fire-type Pokemon, most of whom it can take hits from and deal back. Now while you can stomach a super-effective move like Thunderbolt from Raikou or something if you're healthy enough, it's highly recommended you avoid doing such, unless you're setting up the Mirror Coat. Which in itself is a one-time surprise since Tentacruel won't be able to do much else after taking too big of a hit, even if it lives. Naturally because of how easy it can be to wear down heedless of Giga Drain, get yourself some Wish support from either Umbreon or Florges. It doesn't matter which one, they both have good synergy with Tentacruel, however, Umbreon + Tentacruel isn't as easily broken by Nidoking. So there's that to consider.

Oh yeah. Clear Body is slashed with Liquid Ooze because they're both incredibly niche abilities overall. The most common stat drop you'll suffer will mainly be from Sticky Web. It could be useful for not getting SpD drops from Shaymin's Seed Flare, though. Liquid Ooze is cool for those stray Leech Seeds you may happen to switch into. Which most of the time will be from SubSeed Shaymin. Either way you slice it, SubSeed Shaymin gets smashed.

In a nutshell:
  • It's bulky, allowing Tentacruel many opportunities to come in and pivot attacks and use Rapid Spin.
  • Unique typing allows it to switch into Fire-, Water-, Poison-, Grass- (most are special), and Steel-type attacks, and the increased bulk helps at times with Thunderbolts.
  • Makes for a pretty decent attacker while providing defensive synergy (Starmie has to choose either or, while Blastoise lacks certain moves, resistances, and recovery).

So yeah, it's a good set, and if it were up to me, I'd paste Mirror Coat in another slot, but we'll see how things go.

Put the remove the spdef EVs and make speed evs 24 so it can outspeed Honchkrow and attempt to burn it with Scald in a dangerous situation, as it doesnt sacrifice much bulk.

Set can be put in OO, cause with assault vest Tentacruel is missing out on a lot of useful support moves like Toxic and spikes, while it also lacks the passive recovery of Black Sludge.

on the teammates option, mention wish support as well because tentacruel is really easy to wear down, and wish from partners like jirachi and the already mentioned florges/umbreon helps a lot, and i think that's all. qc 1/3

I'm not really sure why'd you have Protect without Rain... Just put Protect in OO, which moves Knock Off up to the main slash. I'd put Toxic Spikes as the main slash over Toxic, as that's pretty much the main reason you'd use Tentacruel over other spinners.

Hey! I think the physically defensive EV spread needs a bit explaining on how it eclipses specially defensive spread as the more optimal one. You could, for example, tell which physical attackers Tentacruel can spin against if going with a physically defensive spread (I'd imagine atleast Heracross, Mienshao, Honchkrow and Darmanitan without EQ fall here). Also, I think a specially defensive spread could use a mention in Set Details or OO, as it lets Tentacruel to better check such dangerous special attackers as Hydreigon, M-Houndoom, Roserade and Pory-Z. Also, I'd put Sludge Bomb in Moves, as it's Tentacruel's most powerful move, and the secondary effect can be beneficial.

I'll add the part about the EV spreads later! However about Sludge Bomb, it's not really useful because you can set up Toxic or TSpikes and poison the opponent, and most of the time it will clash with Scald's burn rate. :/ It doesn't have anywhere to fit in the moveslots because there are much better moves than it such as has Sludge Wave.

Edit: Implemented!

yeah, this should be fine Sapphire. the only thing is a space between 'any' and 'way' in the 5th sentence.
