Terraria

Basicly its a new indie game by some random developer. The game made a name for itself trough some smart advertising over youtube. I think the best way to describe it is as the lovechild between metroid and minecraft, with some rogue dna in there. It is a lot more action based then minecraft though, so gameplay wise its stupid to draw that comparison.

So has anyone else picked this up (i know some did), and what are your experiences so far?

Also, Dan_Dan is making videos about his singleplayer endeavors, you can see them here if anyone happens to be interested: http://www.youtube.com/user/Smogcraft

I'm actually gonna hold out and see what people in general think about it, even though the $10 price tag is really cheap. The multiplayer action/dungeon exploring seems to be the most interesting part of the game, so I'm waiting to see how well that holds up.

Yeah, it might seem odd to people to play in a "sandbox RPG" type of thing, as there is no actual goal other than getting better stuff and killing the bosses.

Multiplayer makes it much more fun, just cause you can team kill bosses that are too strong for you. PvP could be fun too, specially since they do wanna add CTF.

kind of get the impression people are buying this because it is a poor man's minecraft

is it actually fun?

The game is genuinely fun, but it's not really much like minecraft. Sure, you have digging and crafting, but that's where similarities end. The gameplay is VERY different from minecraft, much more focused on exploring, fighting, and getting better gear. TBH, for me the building part is almost non-existent.

I was skeptical before tonight, but after playing multiplayer with some of the smogcrafters and using skype instead of the lame in game chat it was a lot of fun. We were just exploring and summoning bosses for goodies.

Not sure how long it's going to keep me interested, though, there seems a lot of potential for PvP.

It sucked up a lot of my time trying to get the best gear and I seem to have clocked a huge 15 hours on it, but now I kinda have everything and I don't really know what to do in the game, other than just kill the same monsters over and over. It's fun (multiplayer is the way to go) but you kinda get the sense of "okay... so what am I supposed to do?"

15 hours is a good time for how cheap it was, but I think it needs very constant support to keep it going. Personally I don't see it surviving as long as Minecraft is.

to be honest people comparing it to a "2D minecraft" seems a bit unfair. I mean, it's an obvious reaction because mining and crafting make up part of the gameplay but it's very different from minecraft in a lot of ways and to compare it to such a great game is going to set you up for disappointment.

ok, after a very rocky start im getting the hang of it, but i dont know what to do now:/ i have wood, clay, rocks, workbench, and a furnance. i only have a small amount of silk, ill go spelunking for more later. so what can i do?

Build a shelter and get some stuff started to start spelunking is pretty much what you have to do. If anyone is interested in some multiplayer, drop by #smogcraft, as thats where most of the smogoners who play are to be found these days :p

It's actually quite a bit of fun, I enjoy the idea of more of an RPG feel to the game, while still retaining the whole build your own world part. I really recommend if your on the fence watching the Developer's Let's Play videos.

Just got it, and I have to say that I'm enjoying it much more than I ever did Minecraft. It's much more rewarding, and the atmosphere is amazing.

it seems amazing but i am not buying it yet for no good reason whatsoever.

actually, i might buy it soon.

Once you get to the upper levels of items, the game burns out very quickly. Looks like some cool updates are on the way, but it'd be nice if they could stretch out the updates so.

Another game similar to this is King Arthur's gold. What you do in that game however, is dig for gold, wood, and stone, and use stone/wood to build and hide your using things you build. It is multiplayer only and is one team versus the other. You can be a builder, which digs and is the only class that can place blocks, a knight, or an archer. Knights and archers work to kill the other team's players. You can also steal gold from the other team and the game ends when one team gets enough gold.

btw, it's free. http://kagdev.tumblr.com/

Terraria is so much more a loot festival than a Minecraft clone. The entire game becomes focused on getting stuff after a while

Minecraft = digging and building

Terraria = being a greedy fucker

And even though you the game burns out quickly in the end, thats 30 hours spent on a 10 buck game. I can't quite think of any other way to get more bang for your buck then that
