The Cricket Thread

The time definitely won't be a problem, but atleast 2 batsmen have to show some sort of form if NZ are to win...

Australia will probably give them 300 to chase.

Obviously they have time since in 1 and a half days the first innings has been completed..

I was really disappointed at the umpired for some of the appeals in this match.. expecially Michael Hussey..

This match wont make it to day 5 in my opinion as the pitch still has a bit of moisture.. Australia will have some fun in the field if it the pitch stays like this..

If McCullum can do something for NZ they might be able to chase 250-300 down.. him going for just a mere 8 in the first innings cost them bad..

Ross Taylor looks good aswell, as does Katich.

The second test will be a completly different story though in my opinion..

I'd say that the Hussey decision is the only bad call I have seen all match. Otherwise the umpiring has been brilliant, especially from that South African dude..

I'd also say a lot of the NZ batsmen did show form, as did the Aussies, its just that immediately afterward they played stupid shots and got out.

And I dont expect McCullum to be the saving of this match.. What really cost us was the batsmen who got in and got out bing dumb, How and Ryder and I missed Taylors dismissal, but he was definitely in, I just dont know how dumb it was.

Also I guess the other problem is the fact that the new players seem to be under strict instructions to never take any risks ever, so of course they never score any runs..

But yeah, look at Katich, he hasnt had any trouble at all from the pitch. Because its a good batting pitch. Here is a list of batsmen in this game that should not have gotten out the way they did: Ponting, Hussey, Symonds, Watson, Haddin, Maybe Lee-I cant picture this dismissals atm, Clarke, Redmond, How, Ryder, McCullum, maybe Taylor and Elliott-I didnt see them, Vettori, Southee, Ponting, Hussey, Clarke and Symonds.

If NZ cant score 300 on this pitch, then its because they are shitty batsmen. Also remember the more runs Aussie get the more the pitch will dry out.. I dont think its gonna break up at all, and if it does you havent got a specialist spinner, though you probably wont need one.

NZ just came from a game where they chased 317 after scoring less than 200 in their first innings. Granted it was against Bangladesh, but they got there comfortably.. And that pitch was imo harder for batsmen than this one..

Have a nice day.

I really would have preferred India to not have won on D/L, but I'm still glad India won. Bopara opening was a really good decision imo, though I think that Sharma's bowling was weaker than it should have been. I think that England really has a shot in Bangalore if only because Bopara and Bell made such a good opening pair.

Yeah i agree, I think they should make sharma open the bowling with Zaheer, munaf is way too predictable and he doesn't take much wickets. Bell and Bopara did well but i still think India are favourites, Especially since Sachin comes back ^^ and one of the two out of form batsman make way for him, i think it should be rohit sharma

At least something to smile about I guess, a good opening partnership with Bopara and Bell. I must say that I am still dissapointed that one of them didn't go on to get an 80 / 90 / 100 if we are going to play well we need a solid backbone to build out innings upon, but unfotunately we lost the first four wickets within 50 runs, a very VERY tupical englandd job I must admit. He have no solidity "an england collapse" is a reasonably common phrase and we can do it so well.

There's no doubt we would have lost due to DL anyway, but a ray of hope for the rest of the series, and Taxie, I told you we would never win the series ;)

Australia really need to have a specialist spinner..

Michael Clarke and Andrew Symonds isnt enough, even if they give katich an over or two..

Krejza should of played this match.. He might of made a big part in it..

I really think Brett Lee should be given a rest in the next test to let Mitchel Johnson, Stuart Clark and Shane Watson get the wickets..

Jason Krejza is probably the best spinner in Australia at the moment since Shane Warne and Stuart MacGill retired..

Anywhere they go in the world, they need a quality spinner..

I will bring the topic OVER RATES up since I think its a load of bs and it definently cost Australia the match against India.. Why would they bowl Michael Hussey and not Brett Lee, Johnson or Watson? They were the match winners for Australia..

Ricky Ponting just cares about himself missing a test match.. They would of won that match against India taking 6 wickets in the middle period..

Ricky could of won that series for Australia but just cared about himself.. selfish.. (Australia would of won if it was 1-1 in the series)

Hey don't lose hope yet, England's been doing better and better each match. England's pretty much shot, but there's still a glimmer of a chance.

New Zealand chasing 327 for victory in 1st test in Brisbane.
Will they do it? Can the powerhouse that is Australia be defeated on home soil?

Short Answer: No

Edit: New Zealand are now 1/1 after Redmond was caught in slips by Ponting, Bowled Lee.

Congrats Brett Lee on bringing up his 300th test wicket

Tea break, Ryder looks good, the pitch looks flat.

NZ have to be favourites to win it at this point, the match is in their hands. All they have to do is bat smart and they'll get there comfortably. Even Aaron Redmond looked comfortable, and he is not a comfortable person. Of course then he carefully directed a stroke straight into the hands of the bowler, but I am not willing to assume that all of New Zealanders are going to do something like that.

Have a nice day.

I haven't been able to see the first match (it sucks to be not in Brisbane when tests come even though I LIVE THERE) but from the scorecard Australia looks like shit. And what happened to the spinner? They dumped him because he did well in India?

Redmond gone..

Taylor isnt looking good against Stuart Clark..

I think its time to bowl Andrew Symonds and Stuart Clark in a spell, at least 10 overs..

Symonds with the swing and Clark with the accuracy and tight bowling..

NZ are 4/54 now. That would seriously have to be one of the most laughable comments I've heard all day Hip!
"New Zealand would have to be favorites to win at this point"
Lol, thanks for brightening my day!

It's pure ego to expect any team to make even 300 in these conditions. The pitch is under-prepared and the outfield looks like Ryder has been jumping all over it.
It wasn't a good toss for Australia to lose, but as we have seen the batting is getting better as the game goes on and the storms leave.

That being said, NZ are a side that has averaged 280 in its first innings this year, including 4 matches against Bangladesh. Good bowling is, and has been rolling them. Never had a chance

Yeah, I was trolling you a little bit, but pretty much everything I said came to pass.

Did NZ bat smart? No. Am I surprised? Not really. Were they in a better position than Australia at tea? They definitely were.

The pitch isnt really under prepared at all. Australia just batted woefully. Lucky for them they have so far been outdone in woefulness by NZ, but I wouldnt be celebrating that fact if I were you.

Any decent batting side would expect to make 300 in those conditions. Aside from a couple of deliveries from Stuart Clark there was no assistance whatsoever from the bowlers.

I'm still backing the Kiwis to take this one. They'll scrape through with some clever farming of the strike by Vetorri with the tail after a big partnership with Taylor.

Have a nice day.

Come on Australia. I think this match has a poor performance from the side of batsman and a very good performance from the side of the bowler.

8/161
As predicted, New Zealand won't even make 200! This match has truly been at the whim of the bowlers. Both S.Clark and M.Johnson have been bowling fantastically for Australia. And what an awesome, calm, collected catch by Symonds to take Vittori!

At least Ross Taylor tried to make it competitive, 75 is not a bad hit against Australia.

EDIT: 10/177. Some entertaining 6's from Tim Southee at the end there. Hate to say i told you so, but, I told you so!

Yeh it sucked that Southee didnt get to bat a bit longer, he might of got them to 200..

Cut Brett Lee, bring in someone like Krejza or a quality spinner who can actually bat.

Oh well, these things happen from time to time..

It was pretty dissapointing Vettori got out the exact same way he got out in the first innings. I couldnt believe Obrien and Southee took that third run..

On the whole, it was a great performance by NZs bowlers. They still desperately need someone with a little extra pace, but they just cant do anything about that. Bowling out the top ranked team in the world for under 300 twice on a decent pitch is probably the highlight of the year since the outside of the Hamilton test.

Still I hope they'll bring in Patel for the next game, they still are a genuine quick short of a brilliant bowling attack, but imo they should be looking to make up for that with variety.

Have a nice day.

In my opinion the danger men NZ used to have need to be replaced, Ross Taylor has done a brilliant job of taking a role similiar to Stephen Fleming.

Shane Bond was an insanely quick bowler, its a shame he isnt in the side anymore since he was the pace of the team.

Poor match for McCullum, only thing he did was take catches as keeper.

Well its over, India win the series!! I was worried in those middle overs but India still won. Now KP has to insure its not a 7-0 whitewash cause it looks like that will happen

Ah Ishant Sharma got a haircut...I don't know what to think about that.

Shah and Flintoff made that an interesting match, if only because it was just slightly possible for them to make a comeback. If Bopara had stayed in longer, I think that England would have a much better shot, but with Pathan's six and Bopara's dismissal, England was pretty much doomed from the start.

Argh does anyone know of any site that has free streaming video of the matches? It's not nearly as awesome just reading OBO's.

I am kinda confused as to why if matt prior is going to bat at 9, he would be in the side instead of one of the dudes who can actually catch?

Have a nice day.
