The Everything NHL Thread

Hit: Nothing.

Miss: Everything. And Paul Kariya, lol.

Starting off slowly and terribly just like last year...with no Ovechkin to kick-start me...

O boy.

hit: picks 1-5
miss: picks 7-10, dropping pick 11

not really disappointed with any aspect of my team outside of the not actually winning part.. the talent is there though so i have faith it will turn around. i am partially concerned with my decimated blueline though since i'll have to fix that via trade if i want to improve it to what it once was

if i had faced WER last week i would have won 7-2 so lets see if i can take down the tyrant with my team of only 2 people teifu would even draft or something like that

and for everyone saying my goalies are bad if you go to totals in team stats you will see i am in second in both gaa and sv% lol its really just a matter of me hitting my 3 starts a week im happy to sacrifice wins

Well for 3 straight weeks you didn't have at least 3 starts so I wouldn't be surprised.

Double post because this shit is just unfair. Leafs lose 4-3 in OT to the Islanders despite having 60+ shots against Roloson. Not to mention I forgot to set my roster today, just when Stastny is killing it.

this is why the leafs lose :

Random stats, btw, but without inaccurate the standings are with uneven GP and all the 3 point games, for anyone else who might be curious, here are the two conferences ranked by points percentage... the line is in/out of the playoffs as of P%. The best team so far, Chicago, is projected to hit 119 points, where their division rival Wings would hit 97, though I'm not too worried about them losing their 100 a year streak...

also to come in late on the hits/misses thing...

I definitely had my best smogon draft of my three attempts this year, for reference

The Zanarkand Abes
1. (2) Evgeni Malkin
2. (23) Henrik Lundqvist
3. (26) Nicklas Lidstrom
4. (47) Chris Pronger
5. (50) Thomas Vanek
6. (71) Pekka Rinne
7. (74) Sergei Gonchar
8. (95) Teemu Selanne
9. (98) Ray Emery
10. (119) Steven Stamkos
11. (122) Dustin Brown
12. (143) Milan Hejduk
13. (146) Brian Rolston
14. (167) Saku Koivu
15. (170) Slava Kozlov
16. (191) Victor Hedman

I've traded a lot of them but in general everyone in my top 10 picks or so where it really matters has done well except Vanek who I have no choice but to hold where I got him(unless someone wants to give me something close to his original value in a trade(lol)), Lidstrom who looks fine mostly and is just a victim of the Wings being cold again, and Lundqvist who I'm not particularly worried about either.

As far as particularly good picks, Pronger at 47 (24th by yahoo ranks now), Stamkos at 119 (12), Hejduk at 143 (36), and Selanne at 95 (82) were all good values, as well as getting Neal(28), Penner(9), Fisher(33), and Horton(68) as FAs to fill-in over my late draft gambles. It's arguable whether my trades made my team better or worse (they're definitely lateral or backwards in the short term but they were moves made with the long term in mind), that's probably where the biggest potential misses are for me so far, as well as my blue line, which for instance has given me 1 point this week from what should be a high powered fantasy blue line with Lidstrom/Pronger/Chara/McCabe/Blake

So uh, short version:

Hits: Stamkos, Selanne, Hejduk, Pronger, trading for Thornton, picking up Fisher/Neal/Penner/Horton

Misses: Vanek(considering I could have picked Marleau who went the next pick), Lidstrom(Gaborik went next, but even sedin, st louis, cammalleri, etc. would have been better long term) and my blue line in general, trading for Mason

That said, assuming no more injuries by the middle of January my team will end up something like

Thornton
Stamkos
Vanek
Penner
Hejduk
Selanne
Pronger
Lidstrom
Chara
Markov

Lundqvist
Osgood

S. Mason, Blake, Neal, Horton, Fisher

With a spare player in there obviously I'll need to do something about, but in general I feel as though the roster is better than my pro barely-in-top-6 position atm

Sabres rule, Flyers drool. Rivet is probably done for the season, I've never seen a leg buckle like that (or seen a guy as tough as him in so much pain). big hit to the D, but at least we remembered how to score.

rivet :(

also im so mad about my bench... connoly, koivu and brunette all on the bench (not to mention rask with another stellar start on the bench). with those guys in i could have potentially dusted the first place person in the league... hopefully i still can :)

Wow great comeback by Atlanta tonight and won 300$ but almost ripped after up the ticket after the 2nd as I needed them to win by 2 goals.

To do the hit / miss stuff properly like teifu...

Hit: Morrow currently #34 drafted #69, Ribeiro currently #67 drafted 117, Jokinen currently #70 drafted 93, Kaberle currently #84 drafted 148, and Antropov currently #88 drafted 165 were all good values. The two additional hits are my free agent pickups of Peverley at #30 (to replace White as the point guzzling Atlanta center I drafted at the end) and Afinogenov at #33 both look like great pickups. Peverley had a slightly lower than a point per game pace last year and is playing on a better team this year, so I can definitely see him continuing at a point per game, and Afinogenov has already proved he can play at a point per game pace before (remember I drafted him last year lol) and as long as he gets power play time with Ilya and plays with any combination of Ilya, Antropov, or Kozlov, he'll keep it up.

Miss: Paul Kariya my god lol. I only drafted him 124 but i totally thought he was an 80-90 point winger this year...whoops. Dion Phaneuf currently #117 drafted 28, Doan currently #99 drafted 52 and Niedermeyer currently #140 drafted 76 are currently looking like bad value picks. Since I drafted Todd White and Ryan Whitney and both are no longer on my team due to drops, I have to include them as misses as well. But I did get Afinogenov for Kariya (and whenever Yahoo gives Doan LW eligibility that position imbalance will become a perfect balance), Peverley for White, and Pavelec for Whitney, so the replacements worked out well.

Expected: Alfredsson, Avery and Lubomir are giving me what I expected.

I left Backstrom and Luongo off the list because one is a notoriously slow starter (Luongo) and the other has a team adapting to a new system (Backstrom). They've each started to give me great ratios and I think the wins will begin to pile up, so I'm not worried at all about their current rankings.

Thoughts: Doan and Morrow are known for having occasional slow streaks, and Doan is at least shooting, so I'm not worried for either (yes, I know Morrow is still in the 30s). I fully expect Luongo and Backstrom to continue giving me great ratios and for the wins to start coming. Niedermeyer has picked it up recently so I'm hoping he continues. My real worry is Phaneuf. He's just...kind of doing nothing. He started off great and then tapered off. He isn't shooting nearly as much as the past few years, taking PIMs as rapidly or even being a general presence on the ice (I watch a lot of Flames' games due to having both Dion and Jokinen).

Excited for: Luongo, Jokinen, Afinogenov, Morrow. Like I said, I think Morrow and Luongo got their slow periods out of the way, so I can expect elite netminder status (always something to be happy for (=) and a LW giving me a 70 point pace with 100+ PIMs. Afinogenov I think will maintain his current pace which is absolutely glorious for me, as I essentially replaced a 120+ pick for a top 40 winger, which is awesome value. Jokinen is what is really making me excited. He finally stopped looking like a fat kid on skates! November has been good to him, and he's picking up points, PIMs, and shots, all of which he was lacking for in October. If Iginla can work his magic and turn Jokinen back into the 90 point pace, 80 PIM, 300 shot monster he was in Florida, I'll be ecstatic that I got him at 93. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I look at my week this week and I see solid stats with no unexpected / out of the ordinary stats from anyone, with my two main "lack of good performances" culprits being Phaneuf and Doan.

I can live with that. Hopefully my team has decided to get past its individual cold streaks and just start giving me what I expect normally from each of these guys. If so I think I easily have a top 3 (if not the best) team in the league, unlike what my #7 ranking would imply.

My drafted team is almost completely different than the team I'm putting out there now. Here's what I drafted:

1.(11) Joe Thornton C
2.(14) Corey Perry RW
3.(35) Steve Mason G
4.(38) Marian Hossa RW
5.(59) Brian Rafalski D
6.(62) David Booth LW
7.(83) David Krejci C
8.(86) Brian Campbell D
9.(107) Ilya Bryzgalov G
10.(110) Milan Michalek LW
11.(131) Zach Bogosian D
12.(134) John-Michael Liles D
13.(155) Patrick Sharp C,RW
14.(158) Nathan Horton C,RW
15.(179) Patrick O'Sullivan LW
16.(182) Vesa Toskala G

And what I'm fielding now:

C: Malkin/Richards
C, RW: Sharp
LW: Whitney/Moulson
LW, RW: Bourque
RW: Brown/Kotalik
D: Gonchar/Liles/Rafalski/Campbell/Aucoin
G: Bryzgalov/Emery/Turco
IR: Knuble

Rather than try to remember who's been traded for who I'll just give a rundown of who I think has been a hit or miss thus far.

Hits: Bryzgalov, Sharp, Bourque, Richards

Bryz has exceeded my (and pretty much anyone else's, I'd say) expectations this year. Sharp was pretty damn good value (drafted 155, currently sitting at 43 overall), and Richards and Bourque were pretty good FA pickups (sitting at 13 and 64 overall, respectively).

Misses: Turco, Emery

This has been the second year in a row I've picked up a hotshot rookie goalie and traded him for a more established veteran who's underwhelmed me. Turco is my Nabokov this year, with Gustavson being my Mason (though tbh both goalies last year were better). I don't know how Emery can be ranked so low when netminding for a Flyers team that looks so good on paper, but that's fantasy for you.

Looking forward at the season, I don't think I'll be holding on to my top spot for a while longer unless I can make some sort of deal and move one of my many wingers for a solid goalie. Psycho need not apply. It was a magnificent run to start out though, and I can't wait until next year for when I can actually show up to the draft.

I saw that live, one of the strangest things I've ever seen. Makes me mad, too, what are the kids going to think? You gotta think there's like 10% of them that'll emulate that...

Fortunately the game was between Florida and Atlanta, so with only three children watching it still rounds down to 0 children whacking their goalies in the face

Doesn't mean too much yet since it's still early in the season (monthly), but double posting to make it last longer cos I'm proud of our e-complishments so far

Though it sure makes me annoyed at turning it over with like 3 minutes left in our first game of the season (1-0 at the time, ended up being our OTL), bah. Only 1 other goal allowed all night, if only we'd gotten a SO there...

So Jonas Gustavsson's sidelined with an elevated heartbeat. D'you think we would have a repeat of Alexei Cherapanov if he didn't come to play in North America?
