The Everything NHL Thread

The Islanders have this thing where if you show a high school/college ID, you get $50 tickets for $10. The thing is, you have to actually show up at the Coliseum and buy them there an hour before the game starts. So, me and a friend decided to go see the Isles/Devils game.
Oh man, I was pissed. I drove 2 hours to get to the Coliseum, and got there 2 hours and 20 minutes before the first faceoff. After about 40 minutes of waiting, one of the Coliseum staff told us waiting on line that they only had 50 tickets for sale with the offer, and that every other seat was sold out.
We were 55th and 56th in line.

It was their 5th sellout this year. I'm a bit confused as to why they'd sell out against the Devils, of all teams, since they have a very boring style of play. I'm just chalking it up to the fact that it's the game on the first Saturday after Christmas.

Was awesome to watch the game, and finally a game at a normal time for me :p
Since I feel obligated to post about it:
I think at this point we're all aware I'm not a fan of the Pittsburgh Sidney Crosbies, but regardless of that the game(largely because of him) was really, really good for the NHL. Even in the lulls where the game wasn't really all that interesting on it's own he was constantly doing moves that most players wouldn't have attempted and in general he put on a really, really good show. That's not to say the Sabres or his Pittsburgh teammates didn't, but I think as a less than neutral fan Crosby seemed to do a really good job of proving why he's the face of the NHL right now. I don't think I can recall a time I've been alive that ESPN's barrage of sports talk shows has talked so much or so positively about a hockey game.. the "winter classic" had the best ratings of any regular season game in the last decade and the atmosphere was really amazing. Bettman made a comment about how they plan to do it again but want to keep it scarce enough that the novelty doesn't wear off which is clever I think. I think if I was running it I would set it up similarly to how the NFL does Thanksgiving with two teams playing every year(Dallas and Detroit in that cames) and rotating in opposition.
And whether or not I'm a fan of theirs, Pittsburgh should definitely be one of those teams.

I just saw my first game (Atlanta vs. Carolina) since moving to the UK. Turns out they show it early morning here. Anyways, I have no idea how Atlanta won that; they were completely outplayed.
Also, does anyone outside of US/Canada know anywhere you can watch games online? I can't find any sites that show entire matches.

I know on yahoo there's certain games that get shown for free. Whether this is because of the fantasy stuff we do or not, I can't say. Worth looking into, though. I'm sure gr33n can tell you what he uses, if he does use anything. There's always center ice but you have to pay for that.

If you are interested in seeing the games for free you should download Sopcast. ( http://www.sopcast.org/ ) It's a P2P program that allows you to watch streams that people put online.
The site you will use for getting those streams will be:

Every day there will be an overview of the games people are streaming. It's entirely free of charge, but you are dependent on the kind of stream you get, some people are able to provide awesome streams, others can be really choppy which makes it impossible to follow the games. I'm living in the Netherlands myself and I stayed up some times till 3:00 am just to find out the stream was unwatchable.
Wasn't really complaining because it was free, but it sure isn't what you are hoping for when you stay up late for the games.
Late 2007 Center Ice was also made available to Europe (http://europe.espn360.com/ ) , I decided to buy myself the NHL package for 80 dollar (season package). Those streams are less dependent on your upload/downloadspeed, they dont cause much pc lag like the sopcast streams do.
It's a matter of preference (and love for the hockey game ) and your financial situation, but buying Center Ice was worth it already for me.
For the Yahoo games that they broadcast you will need to change to a proxy of an american IP (maybe canadian aswell not sure), never been able to watch those streams because of it, but I heard the quality is decent. Unfortunatly if you choose this option, you won't see that many games, I think it's 1 a week at max.
Hope this answer was any helpful, before this year I have been looking for ways to watch live hockey on the internet for over 5 years, and never got anything. So I'm afraid these 3 are your only options for now.
50 seconds into the game one of my Detroit rentals (samuelsson) got the 1st assist (out of the 2 i needed), end of the 1st Lidstrom gets the second one. Results in a 8-0-2 week for me.
Without Theodore's great game at saturday it would have been a 7-1-2 week, so really glad with the extra point gained due to a player who I don't even own.
Next week 5krunner again, hope Whitney doesn't have the week he had against me last time. It was insane :p
[edit] Again Yahoo fucked up the stats it seems. And fixed the assist. I'm currently still on a 7-0-3 then :(

The poor Sabres can't seem to figure out if they want to win the cup or get a good draft pick this year :( They better sort their shit out soon, too many hot teams right now to be dawdling.
It has been an interesting season for me as a fan with the Wings(by a large margin) and the Devils both winning their divisions but the Sabres struggling the Capitals doing pretty much what we expect from them at this point. Honestly I really wish Ovechkin would leave after this season so I could cheer for a team with a fanbase but at least it's nice to see them clawing their way into the outskirts of the playoff picture. Still hoping for a Crosby/Ovechkin playoff series at some point :(
In fantasy news I made a bunch of moves today(5 drops and 4 pickups) in an effort to help the few producers on my team by adding four players other teams had dropped that I think will probably be more productive in the immediate or distant future than who I had. My offense is a little too centralized in Datsyuk, Gomez, Holmstrom(Injured), Havlat(Injured), Rafalski, Prospal, Avery, and to a minor extent Nylander and Enstrom, so hopefully these moves will enable me to get offense from more than just a few players. Brodeur and Luongo are winning their three stats pretty consistently but the skaters are only half on board. If Williams decides to play like he was before the break I will probably get rid of a center to get me the nice C, C, C/RW, C/LW, LW, LW, LW/RW, RW, RW, 5D, 2G roster that I am enjoying in a couple of my other leagues(one of which with 4D/3G) which is often fun, interested to see how this works out since the players I dropped were all basically doing nothing and spend most of their time on my bench anyway.

Just checked the list of the players you added, quite sure you made good decisions there. I wanted to pick up Blake later this week, but decided to wait till he could play a game on the day i picked him up, just too try and add some extra skater stats.

I am sure only you know how I feel about this, but I as a player would not skip half a season and expect to come back! Also, if I had any influence on the decision I would probably just tell Big Scotty to go play pond hockey because after jockeying the team around like that he doesn't deserve to play imo. Whether he was getting paid or not, I'm sure he wasn't, it's just annoying because the sport is competitive and him doing that is just not what it's all about in my book.
Also while I am thinking about going to bed, I decided to give NHL08 a run on superstar again, well, my franchise thingy, and after 2-1 losses to the Kings, Kings, Wings, I lost 8-0 to the Bruins...sigh. Also I think picking only the guys on my fantasy team was a fun idea though, also it shows me why I will never take Kari Lehtonen again!
