The Everything NHL Thread

Pausing the trailer in their stupid feature spam I noticed there are new celebrations now and also disallowed goals... which kinda worries me because I score quite a few that shouldn't count online, lol.

Oh fuck me. That's terrible for me, I get a lot of BS goals like that.

At least with Kane's goal they had the balls to call for a review, and at least with Kane's goal IT WAS A LEGAL GOAL.

Still bitter, yes.

What the fuck was that about? That's a first round prospect and a third round prospect. Is Montreal so convinced Carey "choking on his own spit" Price is their guy?

Halak traded to the Blues for Lars Eller and Ian Schultz...Any fires Vin? :D

I was told he was traded to the Blues at work but nobody could tell me for who.

I was crossing fingers hard for David Perron and frankly, it was the only scenario that made any sort of sense to me from the little I knew.

But no, we got 2 young guys I havent ever heard of. One played 7 games last year and the other is a Dane that played junior with the Hitmen.

I dont understand the trade, it looks like a disaster to me, I thought the recent series greatly improved Halak's value. Granted, I know nearly nothing about the kids besides the few minor league numbers I could find but I cant help wondering if that is that all we can get from a near Conny Smythe winner and most probably the Blues' #1 goalie for a few years?

I obviously don't get the trade from Montreal's POV, but what about the Blues? Are they already giving up on Mason? Do they plan on letting Conklin go this off-season (that poor fucking guy) and letting Halak and Mason battle for the starting gig?

From Montreal's side I take it as a sign that Halak's agent, who I'm sure many of you are aware of the reputation of, is playing serious enough hardball that they know they can't pay to retain him and have to get something in an environment where everyone else will probably be pretty sure they can't pay to retain him either. He's a long way from being a Blue too, after all - only a couple weeks to sign the guy before things get complicated. Getting something back is better than nothing and goalies are notoriously hard to move in today's NHL(see: Bryzgalov). I'd be mad if I were a Habs fan too, but I imagine there's some logic behind.

It's a definite upgrade in net for the Blues, though, who haven't gotten awesome goaltending lately. Halak's value is probably "too high" right now since so much of what the Habs did well was team defense he benefited from, but he's certainly better than what they'd have or what they could get on the FA market. It's worth nothing that prior to any signing they make of Halak they have the lowest payroll in the league, so they can afford to pay the Client's crazy price. The Blue's will probably have a serious face-lift this summer with only like 11 contracts left, and Halak will be a big part of it. Mason's contract expired - don't expect to see him back unless they can't sign Halak. This would be a really fun summer to be their GM, I think - they could be awesome or terrible next year depending on if he can retain the right guys(EJ, Kariya if he can get him at a Selannesque price, EJ, Perron, Halak obviously, Hensick), grab a couple impact FAs, which he'll have the money to do, and get a decent first year out of people like Alex Pietrangelo. Blues could be fun next year, and this trade is a pretty good start with them assuming neither prospect magically becomes a 40 goal scorer. Which is exactly what they need, by the way - assuming they all up Pietrangelo and resign EJ they're pretty set on D outside of maybe getting a better #4 guy, but that offense is still pretty sketchy. Kovalchuk to STL???

Arnott to the Devils for Halischuk and a second next year, and Hamhuis' rights to the Flyers for Ryan Parent and a (conditional) 7th next year.

Speaking of "impact FAs", who's going where? (I can't even remember the notable free agents this year.)

I thought this was funny:

So, rumours swirling about Byfuglien, Eager, Sopel, and Aliu being traded to Atlanta for the 24th pick, 54th pick (both New Jersey's from the Kovalchuk trade), Marty Reasoner, and Jeremy Moren. I knew the cap situation was bad in Chicago, but not THAT bad. The Campbell and Hossa contracts really messed up their cap, IMO.

Sad to see Buff go but I think Chicago did exactly what they needed to do with this trade and came out on top. They dumped a couple of overpriced contracts for a couple of picks, a cheaper 4th line center to replace Madden and a decent prospect.

Now only if they would've taken Campbell and Huet too

Really liked the award decisions, think they were "right" every time but with the Lady Byng, which St. Louis should have lost for being a media whiner. Not that he started doing that till the season ended, I guess. Glad Sedin won Hart(though I'd have voted for one of the goalies), I am glad it isn't as automatically awarded to whoever had the better season of Crosby and Ovechkin as I thought.

Though it was way too close...

so, are we gonna make a new thread for next season?

meh, i'm in michigan, so i've got little to worry about our team.

We got lidstrom, holmstrom, bertuzzi, and hudler coming back.

No doubt in my mind that Abdelkader is resigining along with helm.

Hope miller comes back.

Synre and I both want Eaves to come back.. would be cool to see Miller and Abdelkader come back as well though I'm not sure we have room for everyone.. Draper still has one more year which kind of sucks because Helm is definitely his replacement.

In the end I think we'll see Helm and only two of Eaves/Miller/Abdelkader with someone getting moved for perhaps a D since we need another one of those.

hmmm... we'll have to see what's gonna happen. If anyone goes, it's probably miller. Abby is just too valuable. It seems he provides the young energy the team needs.

edit: while scouring the red wings forum on their site, it sounds like we got some russian defense man signed... i'd just focus on trying to get miller and eaves back... oh well

Another edit: i'd like to whack the guy who came up with this salary crap garbage with a nine iron.

I'm sort of new to NHL, how does this draft work with what the teams do with the guys they draft, and explain the trading?
I'm confused about what you're asking, so I'll just assume you're asking what happens to the players who are drafted. Players who are drafted are either sent back to their junior team (or KHL/SEL for the europeans), or make the jump to the NHL (but need to sign a contract first). As for trading, I don't really know what you want to know about trading (as it's such a broad topic).

hmm i guess i was more interested when you said "2 trades" but that probably means your speaking about one team trading their pick...

Do they trade players also?
