Yeah, the rookie played well from what I saw (tuned in during the second period). Nothing he could do about the only goal he gave up. Meanwhile, the Caps offense stunk. Many of the players, and especially Ovechkin, tried to do too much on their own which made things pretty easy for the Rangers defensively. It's not hard to block shots when you know Ovie is just going to hang on to the puck and try to do it all himself. I think the bigger issue though offensively for the Caps was the lack of red bodies in front of Lundqvist when they controlled the offensive zone. Lundqvist was hardly ever screened in the third and you need to do that to a world class goalie like him. He made a lot of pretty routine looking saves because he could see the puck most of the time. I haven't seen too many Capitals games this season so I'm not as familiar with their offense as I am with Detroit's but I can't imagine the Red Wings would have been blanked in game 2 because there would have been more bodies in front of the net. But that's comparing apples to oranges I suppose.
Hats off to the Rangers, though, because I figured they'd go down to the Caps without too much trouble. Stealing both road games to open the series... I don't think anyone could have predicted that.
And speaking of Detroit, I am pretty pleased with how that series has gone so far. As a Wings fan, I really couldn't have scripted the best case scenario much better than the actual results.
