The Everything NHL Thread

i got 35 the other day and had a little tantrum at some of the ones i missed... i think like 3 i owned in fantasy this year on one of my teams, which is embarrassing, and i was thinking through cup teams and still missed 2 or 3 key players on those teams. annoying...

So I was curious to see how many "close" stat matches we all had, especially since I had "a feeling" that Teifu and I lost a lot of close matches and gr33n and wer won alot of them.

Lo and behold...

Well first let me show how I arbitrarily defined close for the categories: Close was a winning margin of 1 for Goals, Assists, +/-, PPP, and Wins; 2 for PIM; 5 for SOG; .1 for GAA and .05 for s%. The 5 for sog, .1 GAA and .05 were entirely random, and I kind of wish I hadn't stuck stringently to them (I didn't count 6 sog margin of victories or a few .06 % victories, for example), but what can you do.

Anyway, here is the list for close victories, losses, and ties:

Aldaron: 9 W, 18 L, 12 T
Teifu: 15 W, 25 L, 3 T
Captain Kishimoto: 11 W, 16 L, 10 T

WER: 17 W, 9 L, 12 T
Carl: 15 W, 9 L, 9 T
Green: 15 W, 6 L, 9 T

Jackal: 10 W, 13 L, 8 T
Vincent: 13 W, 12 L, 15 T
Zerowing: 15 W, 16 L, 8 T
Justin: 15 W, 16 L, 9 T
Eraddd: 11 W, 9 L, 13 T

Psycho: 9 W, 11 L, 6 T

Now for the disclaimer: I gathered these at 5 am...so expect an error of like +-1 for those numbers lol (there is definitely an error as the wins and losses don't add up to the same number...155 wins to 160 loss. I tallied 114 ties and there are actually 116, so I mixed some wins / losses / ties up when tallying them ...damn me). And obviously, statistically speaking, you can't causally say "o x was unlucky or y was unlucky" just based on this. It doesn't take into account whether the necessity of close matches is a team flaw on your part or the opponent's; it doesn't take into account the unlucky scenario when you have great goalie stats but your opponent has phenomenal ones; it doesn't take into account various other subtleties that I don't really feel like getting into right now.

What we can say is "o, that's interesting, he had a lot of close matches" and wonder why some people ended up on the better or worse ends. Of course, we can also use these to say "x was unlucky or y was lucky" in loose correlative terms :P

I bolded and split the names in an obvious pattern; the first 3 are the players who had an unusual number of losses to wins, second 3 are those with an unusual number of wins to losses and the last 6 are basically what you would expect (about an even number of close wins to losses).

I'd like to point out the especially interesting CK stat, as throughout this season he has been getting flack for having a "terrible" team, yet he is still #2 in the league with a bad draw in close matches.

And of course, I just feel sorry for myself and Teifu for losing so many close matches lol.

With how close the playoffs are going to be this year, it'll be especially interesting to see whether the margin of success is close to the differential between the close wins and losses.

Miller should do pretty well since with Team USA's defense vs. the Sabres he should only be facing 2-on-0 rushes every couple minutes instead of 3-on-0, which will be like NIGHT and DAY. If he can carry the Sabres we should at least get like fourth.

That said, predicting

Gold: Russia
Silver: Canada
Bronze: Toss-Up

I think the Canadians will at least make the finals, but I would be surprised if they won their gold. Home ice is nice, but I think on paper I prefer the Russian roster (though if Brodeur was in his prime I'd be torn), and there is a hell of a lot more pressure on the Canadians. This is a factor because I am not very impressed by how most of the players on that team have played in high pressure situations so far in their careers. I think of that whole team the only people who have winning records in the cup finals are Staal, Boyle, and the three ducks, and Boyle has been tainted by San Jose and their amazing choking. It'll be interesting to see how Babcock rolls lines; I think they'd be much better off if Getzlaf is healthy having him function as the #1 C in a tournament like this one.

I'm torn on the bronze, I would hand it to a healthy Swedish team but I think with as beat up as they are it is open to be stolen by any of the other competent teams. Rooting US, of course, but I don't know...

Yeah I agree the Canadian players are prone to choke, especially compared to multitimes cup winners like Ovechkin, Kovalchuk & Nabokov.

While you have predictably spun that to best suit your country's team, I was measuring mostly by players who have gotten deep and lost as the crux of their team, which only really fits for Nabokov among those players, with his role in the circus that is San Jose. Ovechkin, to his credit, has 30 points in 21 games in the playoffs, with goal scoring never being the problem for the Caps, anyway. Kovalchuk we'll see this year, since Hossa didn't do shit in Atlanta either and he was pretty amazing with the Pens when it counts (but not the Wings). For the record though, they do have cup winners themselves -- Gonchar and Malkin won with the Pens and Crosby, obviously, and Datsyuk (twice) and Fedorov (thrice) won with Detroit.

(It's worth noting Crosby has fairly similar playoff points/game as Ovechkin, but he vanished pretty good against Detroit both years and didn't even finish Game 7; I think that is a lot of what sticks in my mind, since he only scored in 2 of the 13 games between them)

The wild card with them isn't so much whether or not they'll show up as if they have anything to give, lots of wildcards with funny KHLers I've never heard of and ex-NHLers we've tried to forget about. It'll be interesting to see how that blue line does...

I missed this(hyperlink to http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/pu...scheduling-d?urn=nhl,220244#remaining-content) Mike Milbury discussion on Alex Ovechkin vs. Sid the kid. Way to go Jeremy and what is the deal Mike? Let us all give Mike Milbury a big and warm DC welcome next time he is in town! Crapitals? Who is your daddy? He is playing like a dog? Who talks like that besides Mad Mike? :-).

Alex is most likely now the 3 time defending MVP in the NHL. If Mike was our GM he probably would have traded Alex for some picks :-).

I felt the need to CP this for that bolded burn there... I think our resident Islanders fan can agree?

Also a comment on his post

Milbury was downplaying Backstrom’s game, while Roenick said that one reason for Alex’s success is Backstrom’s under-appreciated game. The line of the night was when Jeremy said that with Backstrom as his center - Milbury, might just might, be able to score a goal.

Milbury lost that exchange too….

Can we have JR outside the olympics please ??

As my roommates can attest, every time Milbury starts talking when I'm watching a game I start screaming at the television about Mad Mike's questionable hockey knowledge and parentage, among other things.

russia who??

some of the most inspired hockey ive seen in a while.

see you american boys in the finals ;)

Canada and Slovaks in the semi finals. Wow did not expect this. I'm sure Canada can take this game. Just please play like you did today.

Or just not play as a team, or atleast not a well motivated one.

Go Halak! Loved how they held of the swedes :)

Curious what the semi finals will bring.

My guesses:

USA - FINLAND 3-1
CANADA - SLOVAKIA 4-2

demitra actually made me shit my pants... gaborik would not have missed that!!

the gold medal game is gonna be epic... im talking like 55 shots on miller. leave nothing on the ice.

I've been kinda disappointed in this years Olympic games. I mean not only did the Russians play like ass against the Canadians, but the Swedes lost to the Slovaks (but to be fair, the Slovaks are the most surprising team in terms of play IMO). However, US vs. Canada somewhat makes up for all of this. =]

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK.

I can't watch the gold medal game. My bros were gonna hook up at a friends house to watch on his huge ass screen, but I have church on that day. No Saturday Services allowed either.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK. Plus I don't have cable. Parents refuse to get it.
