The Everything NHL Thread

Vineon why don't you relax, I'm a consultant and it's still technically off-season for that and for hike guiding, not everything is a personal attack. It doesn't matter which English portion of Canada that Quebec begs the money from.

I hope edmonton does get a new stadium, theirs is so bad! I can't describe to you how bad it is to be in that arena, it is actually uncomfortable to watch a damn game there. I mean the Saddledome in Calgary is pretty outdated, though it's an architectural landmark in the city cause of it's awesome shape, but Edmonton takes the cake for worst arena in the NHL by far and away. If I recall, Calgary and Edmonton have the two oldest arenas in the league and Edmonton's is FAR worse. Honestly, I'm more than a little surprised that some oil baron and the Alberta Heritage Fund (where we put our delicious surpluses to be used on development of the province that earned the surplus) haven't joined forces to make that construction a reality.

Maybe you shouldn't try to take credit for something you do not contribute to. Maybe once you do actually pay taxes you might be a bit more fit to complain about how it is being spent. Maybe you should realize I do pay taxes on my end and that it is fucking annoying to be told by someone that doesn't that I owe him my way of living. Maybe you should realize Canada is yet still a federation. Perhaps you also should realize Alberta once was on the other end of the stick, until massive subsidies (financed by eastern Canada) into its growing industries helped it grow. Perhaps you should see it as other provinces getting their money back for their fucking investment after Alberta denationalised what was paid and built by the whole country. Maybe you should ask yourself how much of an achievement is that exactly to happen to live on oil lands. Also, it is probably also worth noting Québec is yet still Canada's 2nd net source of income (after Ontario that is). Finally, perhaps you should stop seeing anything Québec asks as begging while purposely ignoring even the existence of whatever directly goes to all other provinces and their own personal requests. Do I complain that Alberta's oil industry, despite being very profitable, still yet today gets subsidised by the government?

Anyway, best of luck to Winnipeg. I'm just saying we shouldn't make the mistake of not putting an effort to get a team first.

Can we talk a little less about Quebec's numerous shortcomings and more about stadiums and moving of teams? Also, you're making me uncomfortable with your personal attacks, vineon.

Does Quebec City even have land they can use for the stadium? I'd hope it would be inner-city, but zoning land for that is kind of difficult and it's a HUGE hog for parking as well. Honestly, I find the Winnipeg bid for a team to be more reasonable at this time, though if Quebec City had a stadium at least under construction I'd give the nod to them. I really hope they are as passionate as they were during the Vendredi Saint Brawl in 1984. MTL VS QC, lets hope that they can reignite that if a team moves.

I still say we need 2 expansion teams anyways, 16/30 teams making the playoffs bugs me, I'd prefer it is was 16/32. I guess we have to get the markets squared away first before adding new potential turds to the punchbowl. Ugh it just seems to me that until Bettman steps down, teams are not going to move anywhere. It's really a shame that he's so desperate to keep Phoenix where it is because of 'TV rmarkets', or at least that was the going excuse I last heard.

Coyotes ratings thus far this season are down 19 percent grabbing only 9,000 households on average for games on FSAZ. He expects numbers to improve if the team makes the playoffs for the second straight year.

Compare this with the Phoenix Suns:

The Suns play is a bit off on the court, but their television ratings are up compared to last year. The team says games on Fox Sports Arizona and KUTP-TV Channel 45 average 77,200

source, the Phoenix business journal February 9th, 2011

Nobody goes to the games, nobody watches the damn games, get them the FUCK out of phoenix! A Winnipeg team could double attendance and TV viewership easily.

Maybe if you were capable of mounting series of serious arguments regarding those so-called "shortcomings" an intelligent discussion could eventually spawn from it. You've VM'd me a lot about it, but it dies as soon as I reply. You've never pushed it beyond the vacuities that are "Québec begs" and "Alberta pays for".

The arena will be inner-city and it's fairly obvious from the buzz we get that nothing is dead about the old rivalry. Perhaps Winnipeg is a better bid now but that's still not a reason to allow them a free ride as the only bidders. I would approve any scenario that gets a team back in Québec, whether it be a move or an expansion.

So young.

Heh, apparently there is stiff competition from Hartford as well, I would LOVE to have the Whalers back! It is just baffling, you have cities that have proven again and again that they don't give a rats ass for their teams and cities that are dying to get teams. It seems like a match made in hockey heaven and with the TV market bullshit out the window, there is no logical reason not to give a team to Quebec, Hartford or Winnipeg.

For the record, I'm still surprised that Nashville turned out to be a good hockey market, so it wasn't a TOTALLY failed expansion campaign, just a mostly failed one.

As awesome as it would be to see the sharks choke like this, fuck the red wings. Also I still like Niemi so I wouldn't mind seeing him get another cup.

go storks

I seem to recall a time when both Edmonton and Calgary had their teams threatened if they didn't reach a threshold of season ticket sales and the only way to keep the teams in these markets was to sell like mad. Apparently a city council has a say on if a team stays? Fuck Bettman and Fuck Glendale. Honestly that is such fucking shit, why is bettman so desperate to keep hockey teams away from Canada where the market is the strongest?

Gary Bettman is a biased idiot who will do anything to attempt to make hockey big in the states. He apparently even let the Hurricanes play in a 5000 seat arena for a few years just because it was in Carolina.

To be fair, Nashville isn't exactly a "hockey market" with a ranking of 21st in attendance. Although that is 94.3% of the arena filled, which isn't terrible by any means. And with this recent playoff surge, that number may be rising.

Refer back to biased idiot. Although after typing all of that (too lazy to re-type everything), I just read an interesting article (not sure how trustworthy it is, but the logic is there): http://www.usefulproductinfo.com/mo...anadians-must-stop-being-suckers-for-the-nhl/.

TL;DR: The owners make the decisions and Gary Bettman just does their bidding, and they rewarded him with a contract extension.

It's clear that the NHL doesn't care about the current fans of the game, just the potential fans. In the end it's all about the TV deals, failed after failed attempts of converting basketball cities into hockey cities (Phoenix and Atlanta namely, even Denver, Dallas, and Miami). Although to be fair, Dallas and Denver aren't in huge financial trouble as far as I know. And I just read that the Islanders are getting something like 68% attendance, which is just unheard of, especially from a franchise that has won 4 straight Stanley Cups.

Done ranting and CBA defending myself against someone who tried calling me out on how much research I've done on the Phoenix/Atlanta situations.

It's a hockey market. The attendance keeps going up, IIRC, and they even just drafted the first Nashville born player ever to the preds!

_________SHARK ATTACK!!!________

Yeah! Im happy that they won but of course vintage Sharks have to make it difficult. SJ-Canucks should be a great series. Go Sharks.

I'd say choking is more of something in the back of San Jose's mind than Vancouver's. I kinda expect Vancouver to play really well. Vancouver is the kind of team I really expect to raise their game to outclass the sharks. With a shaky Niemi, I really expect Vancouver to wear down their defense by playing so many good lines and score some goals.

That said, players like Scott Nichol are real prickjobs, so maybe that depth on the 4th line could bite Vancouver in the ass a few times.
